Connect, Communicate & Educate Summer Newsletter The South Carolina Horsemen's Council was formed by equestrians as a statewide organization and is a member of the American Horse Council. The SCHC main mission is educational. The SCHC was incorporated as a SC non-profit corporation, April 14, It is a state-wide, all volunteer 501 c (3) Tax Exempt organization. The Board of Directors is composed of volunteer members as are all committees. Since its founding the SCHC has been involved in issues which impact the horse community and reflect our motto that SC Horses Mean SC Business. The SCHC works to keep opportunities open for all. Regardless of the breed or riding discipline. SCHC strives to connect, communicate, and educate our members, our elected and government officials, and the general public about the horse community and the industry we support. What The Council Does For its members UNITES equine enthusiasts regardless of specific interests. REPRESENTS equine enthusiasts on issues affecting the equine community and the industry we support. EDUCATES members, elected and government officials and the public about the benefits of equestrian activities and programs. PROMOTES the common interests of the horse industry in SC. SCHC membership adds strength to assure that your voice is heard in our continuing efforts to keep our animals, maintain our trails and recreation areas, and protect the future growth of SC horse industry in recreational, business and personal endeavors. SCHC membership helps to defray the cost of SCHC programs such as the Youth Scholarship, Stallions to Geldings Grants, Trail Mapping, Annual Expo, Clinics, Seminars, and Horse Welfare Committee. The SCHC offers a statewide Horse Help Hotline. Its purpose is to link people with horse help facilities and programs that can offer options before the Unwanted Horse becomes neglected, abused, or the object of a legal seizure. It further works to link rescue operations to one another so that they may connect, communicate and reach out across our state to each other when help is needed. Any individual, family, farm, business, or organization interested in horses and the equine industry is welcome to join the council. The South Carolina Horsemen s Council represents people who share a love for, interest in, or investment in horses and the horse industry. SCHC has united members to ensure that their views are represented to state and federal agencies, the media and the public at large. The SCHC is dedicated to our motto SC Horses = SC Business. Whether you are a hobbyist, professional, or vendor to our industry, your voice is represented. We are a blend of volunteers from all breeds and disciplines, committed to furthering the interests of all horse people. Our Website provides information about our current projects throughout the state.

Highlighting a few SCHC board members and their goals. Wanda Wood, President of SCHC. I have been affiliated with the SC Horseman s Council since Starting as many do as a Director on board. Serving on many committees such as Trail, Expo, Electronics Media and Horse Welfare. A founding member of the SC Equestrian Ministries and Equestrian Ministries Saddle Club While serving as Publicity Director for the SCEM I learned the value of team work. I enjoy the outdoors, trail riding, family time, church and electronic networking. My husband and I live on a farm with 2 of our grandchildren. We having a great time seeing them blossom into hard working youth. My goal for SCHC is to network with horsemen across South Carolina and bring unity to our board. I feel very honored to be a part of a great group of board members. The knowledge and eagerness to serve the horsemen in our state is heartwarming! Bill Steele, VP of Governmental Affairs Bill is the Director of the Ann Springs Close Greenway. Bill, his wife, Janet, son Will, and daughter, Baillie are an equestrian family. Bill manages 54 horses for the Greenway and boards an additional 32 horses for area people. He worked as a Graduate Assistant at Clemson, and an Ag. Science Associate. He worked for the NC Forest Service as a Water Quality Forester in Rocky Mount, Whiteville, and Mt. Holly, NC. He also worked for the SC Forestry Commission as a BMP Forester in Walterboro, SC prior to taking his current position with Leroy Springs & Co. in Bill is a Certified Prescribed Fire Manager, certified chainsaw operator, IFR/Seaplane pilot rating, and mule skinner. He belongs to the Society of American Foresters, SC Registered Forester # 1431, NC Registered Forester # In his spare time, he enjoys bow hunting and fly fishing. Bill came onto the Board in 2008 as a District #2 Director and has become active in helping with the SETC, the Expo, and many other projects as well as becoming a valuable source of knowledge on equine trails management. Many thanks to Bill for his experience and leadership abilities, while serving as President from 2012 Goals of our board for SCHC: Be Better known and to have a positive vibe. Develop the organization to be the leading advocate and standard-bear for horse people of South Carolina Have a few teeth floating clinics in 2015 Have an awesome expo Much larger organization with much larger budget to speak with a respected voice for those who own love and enjoy horses. To broaden awareness of the horse industry and its importance to SC economy. Have a unified board whose sole purpose is to promote the equine industry. Unity co-operation Alleviate suffering by support slaughter fascinate. Host a fund raiser for SCHC Network through the website for members to be able to contract others of their particular discipline to share information/find out information about other disciplines.

SCHC Treasurer Donna W. Patterson has been a member of SCHC since Donna is married to George Patterson, together they have a daughter, Angie, and one granddaughter, Holly. Donnas entire career has been spent in Banking. Currently with Park Sterling Bank, Clemson, as Sr. Vice President since 1994 Donna grew up around horses and currently enjoys trail riding on her Paso Finos. Donna is Chairman of South Carolina Upstate Equine Council and serves on the board of various civic and professional organizations including Rotary Club of Clemson- Calhoun. Hobbies: Reading, Riding and Traveling as well as keeping up with a college-aged granddaughter. My desire for SCHC is that it become the respected and recognized voice of the equine industry in South Carolina. I would like to see membership grow so that the organization reflects a majority and diverse cross-section of the state s horsemen. District 1 Director Merry Roberson has been a Board of Director for the SCHC, Dist 1, for 5 yrs., and a member of the Horse Council for 14 yrs. I currently serve on the Horse Welfare Comm, but have held positions on the Nominations, Trail, Policies & Procedures, and Expo as Chrm of the Parade of Breeds for 3 yrs, and Chrm of the Parade of Special Disciplines for 1 yr. I am married to Steve Roberson, past President of the Wateree Cutting Horse Assn , and have 2 sons, 2 step sons, 4 wonderful daughters-in-law s, and 7 grandchildren. After graduating from Charleston Southern Univ with a BS in Biology, I worked at the Med. Univ in Charleston as a cytogenetic tech, then the Greenville County School System for 12 yrs, 6 of those in Health Education, and from as Events Coordinator for Circle M Ranch, Pelzer, SC, where the SCHC Annual Expo was held for 2007, 2008, I am now retired, which gives me plenty of time to enjoy many activities and sights from the back of my horse. I got my first equine from Santa Claus, Welch Pony, when I was 8 yrs. old, and have had horses ever since. for almost 60 yrs. I love to line dance and partner dancing, visiting with grands, trail riding & camping, but most of all being with Friends who love to do all the things I like to do. I am a member of the Laurens County Saddle Club, Laurens Farm Bureau Ladies Leadership Comm, member of the SC Upstate Equine Council, and the United Methodist Women s Circle and mission projects. Being a part of the SC Horse Council and the Voice of the Horse Industry has given me great insight on the Council accomplishments over many years, and also the insight on the future endeavors of the Council. Although the Equine Industry is part of the SC Dept. of Ag, we are not considered a commodity. Volunteering to serve for the SCHC helps continue to remind the State of SC that our equines, regardless of which discipline you choose, are a huge part of the financial income to this state. I have shared the information of the SCHC at many events and will continue to share this information for many events to come. Director at Large Randall (Randy) Creamer SCHC Board Member. Retired Captain with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office. Owner and lead instructor with Advanced Training and Consultants LLC., and team lead for the Anderson County Sheriff's Office Mounted Search and Rescue (MSaR). My goal as a SCHC Board Member is to promote responsible horsemanship for the horse owners and riders of South Carolina. As a retired law enforcement officer and instructor, I am assisting the SCHC in developing seminars for law enforcement officers that investigate large animal abuse and neglect. We have found that there is very little training for the officers that investigate large animal cases. We are developing a program that we will be instructing officers throughout South Carolina in state laws and officer safety when dealing with large animals. Follow this link to meet the whole board

Carolina Marsh Tacky Association Horse Show Submitted by Wylie Bell Photo credit Daniela Snyder, Equestrian Images I grew up about a mile from a horse ring where the Dusty Johnson Horse Show was held in Bennettsville for many years. I competed in a few fun classes while my sister was the more serious competitor, but I enjoyed those long, hot dusty days with horses swirling in and out of the show ring with much fanfare. I can still hear the announcer encouraging riders to Go as you please! The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association took me back in time on July 2 with its All Breeds Fun Show at the Red Bank Equine Complex in Lexington. The weather was just as I remembered: hot and dusty under a blazing sun. Announcing and judging the show, Gary Yogi Manning endured the heat all day and provided the right amount of humor and encouragement for the more than 30 riders who participated. For many horses and riders, this was their first time in the show ring, and the fun show provided the perfect environment for novices to gain experience performing in front of a crowd and under the watchful eye of judges. The association did an excellent job choosing classes that included halter, horsemanship, obstacle challenge and barrel patterns, as well as those classic fun events such as the egg and spoon challenge, a panty race, flag relay and ribbon race. While put on by CMTA, the association dedicated to preserving the Marsh Tacky breed, the show was open to all breeds. Seven Marsh Tackies were entered into classes and many took home top-place ribbons. Another unique breed, the Mangalarga Marchador, was also well represented at the show. The Marsh Tacky s ambling gait has often been compared to the Marchador s, so it was a unique opportunity to see the two breeds side-by-side. The crew from Horse Tales was pulling double duty on this day, with half the crew in Lexington to film the horse show, and the other half the Pee Dee Cowboy (a.k.a. David Grant) in Ridgeland to film the Marsh Tacky auction put on by longtime Marsh Tacky breeder and preservationist D.P. Lowther. Both shows will air in the fall. For more information about Horse Tales, visit I d like to thank the many CMTA folks and Adam Faust who worked hard to organize this show and provide a fun venue for riders of all skill levels. I took home a couple blue ribbons and so did my 8- year-old riding student who was riding my Marsh Tacky gelding. I know she and I both will remember this day and cherish these ribbons forever, so I am thankful for their efforts to put this type of event on. CMTA is planning to do a fall fun show in November at Red Bank Equine Complex. More details as they become available can be found at

Clinton Anderson Clinic in Camden, SC By Lisa Zappolo Members of the SCHC Board of Directors were privileged to attend a three-day clinic given by Clinton Anderson at the South Carolina Equine Park, June Pamela Sheaf and Lisa Zappolo attended the Apply the Method clinic as spectators. afternoon. Fifteen riders participated in the clinic. The training was based upon Clinton s Fundamentals teaching set. It incorporated both groundwork and riding. The first day was dedicated to groundwork aimed at getting the horse to move his feet and gaining respect on the ground. The second and third days saw groundwork in the morning and riding in the As a spectator over the course of the three days, the improvements were obvious in the horse and rider teams that put the effort into the exercises. Horses that were dull became more responsive and riders that were hesitant became more confident. A reoccurring phrase throughout the weekend was, Does that make sense? Clinton was available at the end of each day for questions (and photos). He had two interns that were in the arena from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. to assist riders that were having problems or wanted to practice more with a guiding hand. For those South Carolinians that do not have the funds to send their horse to a trainer, or are do-it-yourselfers, Clinton s DVD collections are a step-by-step method that yields results. They come with videos to watch and arena mates to take outside with you as you are working with your horse. For those that have the money, or feel that they need the comfort of a person to answer questions, there are many excellent trainers in SC that can help you to achieve the results that you are looking for.
