NEAA members from far and wide came to watch, visit and compete. Thank you, GMNEA for hosting this event. For those that were not able to attend, we missed you and hope you are marking your calendars and making notes on your smartphones to join us at the National Specialty in I want to thank outgoing Recording Secretary, Margaret Williamson, for her dedication to NEAA serving on the board for the past 6 years. Margaret finished getting the By-law ballots printed and mailed. Margaret was also instrumental in getting our successful Facebook account up and running and helped with our new web site. Tussen Takk, Margaret. The NEAA Board welcomes Leslie Trapnell, our new Recording Secretary. This issue of the NE News contains an announcement about the 2016 National Specialty, as well as a list of the Committee Chairs. If you would like to work with a committee, please contact Leslie Forrest or Pat Viken. Working on a National Specialty committee is a good way to contribute to our organization. Each NE News will contain articles from the different committees keeping you informed and updating important information. We are looking for a regional club or a group of members to host the 2017 Cavalcade of Events. According to the current schedule the Cavalcade will move to the southwest (AZ UT NV CA). Anyone considering hosting this event should checkout the working rules on the NEAA web site for additional information. You should have received the By-law changes and ballot for your vote. The recommended changes address the need to bring our organization into the world of digital communication. Please read the revisions and make your decision. There s a lot going on in NEAA, and we need each and every one of you to be involved with our progress. Enjoy the News and, as always, get in touch with a board member and share your thoughts. 4 ILLUSTRATED GUIDE The Norwegian Elkhound Standard has been in existence for Many Years. Every breed has a standard a document that is like a blueprint that details what that par cular breed should look like what is acceptable and what is not. The standard is applied as a guide to structure, color, height, weight, eye and coat color, ear-set and movement. It covers all aspects of a breed and guides in the selec on of suitable breeding stock for future genera ons. The Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of America has recently developed an illustrated guide containing visual aids that assist in clarifying for the reader what an elkhound should be. Its warm today and there are all sorts of green things coming up of course a lot are in the wrong places but flowers will follow! Happy Day. It was a very long winter for some of us. Once again, our elkhound fancy has suffered a huge loss with the passing on of another long me elkhound breeder, judge and author; Dr. Nina Ross, of Misty Tara Elkhounds. To lose these mentors and founda on breeders of our breed, is a true hardship for the elkhound community. There will be more wri en about her, elsewhere in the newsle er. Our sincere sympathies go to Paul Ross and the family. I have a correc on for Lisa Wilkinson's broken nose. Her dog is vindicated! She broke it playing tennis, and the dog just happened to hit it with his paw it later! Pat Gamsby has injured, and possibly broke her thumb; Cindy Chester recently cut her finger and made a trip to the emergency room. I also saw on Facebook that Pam Johnson is doing well with her chemo. Good luck Pam, keep up the good work. A er 3 months, the mystery of my GI woes has been solved, what I have is Microscopic Coli s, Collagenous type. So now, a er 8 weeks of steroids I was doing very well.un l I tripped on a dog rope, fell, and bruised my hip! Thank goodness, it wasn t broken and I did have an x-ray. The ER is probably sick of me. I need to be more careful our show is coming up and my goal is to be able to show my dog! I can't wait. I am feeling good now. I hope you all are doing well, and staying on your feet. Don't let me be a bad example! Looking forward to seeing you soon at the NEAA Events and GMNEA Special es in mid April in Wisconsin. Kari Olson Sunshine Chairman 5

6 CNEA Meet the Breeds Columbine Norwegian Elkhound Association participated at the Meet The Breeds event hosted by the Colorado Kennel Club at their February show cluster. Club members spoke with the public about elkhounds, their history, function and how to live with them. CNEA canine members offered a few kisses, hugs, handshakes and head and bodies to pet. We had photos of elkhounds doing various tasks and handed out as much information about the breed to as many people as we could. We hope to attend and participate in as many of these type events as possible as we feel this is very important to get the word out to the public about our wonderful breed. 7 DR. NINA P. ROSS If ever there was an angel on Earth, her name would be Nina Ross, our dearly departed Norwegian Elkhound friend, judge, breeder and author. She and her devoted husband Paul bred many champions in the 1960s, seventies and eighties under the prefix Misty Tara-indicative of their roots in Memphis TN. The couple housed one or more Elkhounds for more than fifty years and influenced many in preserving the purity of our beloved breed. She was the angel who went to India on many occasions to spread the word of Christianity and work with those who wanted to become like the title of three of her books: Men of God, Women of God and Children of God. For decades Nina wrote a daily prayer for her home church in Memphis that was shared in bulletins and on-line. Those who knew Nina best appreciated the fact that she and Paul didn t just preach religion; they lived and practiced it with sincere goodness and love of their fellow man. And of course this love was shared by the four-footed angels in their lives. Amongst Nina s many books were The Norwegian Elkhound, Dog of the Vikings, Of Gods and Dogs and Puc, Gray Dog of Norway. Both Nina and Paul were popular judges who took Emeritus with AKC a number of years ago in order to spend more time with family-one son and two daughters and seven grandchildren.-as well as for Nina to pursue her love of writing. For she had retired from her career as an educator after thirty-two years of working in the Memphis School District. Her dual doctorate degrees were in education and theology. Nina and Paul s influence on Elkhounds over the years reflected her love of educating, and breeder-judge Bonnie Turner is an example of a protégé they influenced after purchasing her first show dog from Misty Tara. Nina and Paul worked as a team to found the Greater Shelby County All Breed Kennel Club, stage dog shows, organize judges study groups and in general contribute to both all breed clubs and our parent club. In 2006 the two of them appropriately were recognized by the NEAA as the recipients of the Wells and Catherine Peck Award and Nina was honored with the Ed Schlesinger Award in The last National Specialty I remember them both attending was in Kansas in 2004 and Paul attended the National in MI in Paul s opening prayers honored many of our NEAA gatherings over the years. It is fitting that Nina was working in her garden on that last day and dressing up that evening so she and Paul could go out to dinner at their favorite restaurant with church friends-living each precious moment doing the things she loved. Upon becoming ill, she was rushed to the Emergency Room and passed peacefully two days later. Burial took place on March 30 at her Jefferson City MO hometown and a Memorial Service was held at Lindenwood Christian Church on April 1. The church s gratitude for her devoted service for decades was acknowledged by all. If all people were like Nina Ross, the world would be a better place. We are all better people for having known her. Heaven is blessed to receive her-the angel on Earth who went home to be with the heavenly angels. RIP dear Nina. Patricia V. 12 The Importance of Promo ng Our Breed According to the American Kennel Club, the Norwegian Elkhound breed of dog has seen a steady decline in registra ons since its peak in See the following chart: This alarming decline in registra on also parallels the drama c decline in the number of breeders s ll producing our dogs. As breeders in today s society, we are confronted not only with high cost of maintenance and veterinary care, but also with the Animal Rights steady push to outlaw all breeding. Make no mistake; the future of the purebred dog is in jeopardy. The chart that follows shows the decline over the years in li ers produced and registered with the AKC (Note: AKC did not start keeping li er sta s cs un l 1981). 12

13 Our na onal specialty entries are on the decline as well. AKC does not have all the sta s cs from preceding years on their website, but the downward trend is obvious. Na onal Specialty Conforma on Sta s cs: Year Entries Dogs Bitches For our regional clubs, it s even worse. The average entry of dogs and bitches for all regional clubs in 2014 was 22, with lowest being 8 and highest 43. So, where do we go from here? First, we need to wake up and face reality. We are on a steady downhill slide towards ex nc on and the only way we can fight this is together. For the sake of our breed and its future, we need to pool resources, put aside any squabbling or differences of opinion and set a goal to work hard to a ract, support and mentor new members to our breed and more importantly, figure out a way to deal with the apathy that seems to permeate throughout. Where do we begin? NEAA is a na onal parent club and we proudly count among our members fourteen recognized regional specialty clubs and one s ll in its infancy.** Those clubs are: California Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of Northern California Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of Southern California Sacramento-Sierra Norwegian Elkhound Club Colorado Columbine Norwegian Elkhound Associa on Illinois Northeastern Illinois Norwegian Elkhound Associa on Massachuse s Norwegian Elkhound Minuteman Associa on Michigan Norwegian Elkhound Club of Southeastern Michigan Minnesota Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of Minnesota New Jersey Garden State Norwegian Elkhound Club Ohio Greater Cleveland Norwegian Elkhound Club Texas Greater Houston Norwegian Elkhound Club Virginia - Norwegian Elkhound Club of the Potomac Valley Washington Puget Sound Norwegian Elkhound Associa on Wisconsin Greater Milwaukee Norwegian Elkhound Associa on **(North Carolina Cherokee Foothills Norwegian Elkhound Club not yet recognized by the AKC) Involvement begins at the local level with communica on. We must be er connect with our members and member clubs, encouraging them to become more ac ve. As with any successful organiza on, communica on is a two way street. Our clubs must also reach out to us and u lize the educa onal and support tools we, as the parent club, have to offer them. Recent ac ons by the NEAA Board of Directors to update NEAA Bylaws, bringing them into alignment with today s internet technology is a step in the right direc on. For those club members who have agreed through their last dues renewal no ce to receive occasional s from NEAA, good for you! Your addresses have been placed into an address book and you can look forward to receiving occasional mail from NEAA. Feedback from you is equally important. It helps in the crea on of ideas and it binds the organiza on together, enabling it to grow in a posi ve and cohesive manner. If you have not seen the NEAA Facebook page, go take a look. Google it. Check it out. If you are a member of Facebook, like 13

14 the page. If not, you can s ll go there and look at it. Tell your friends to look at it and like it. Facebook is a free social media program and it is very popular. All of our regional clubs should have a Facebook page, even if they have a website. Pos ng interes ng ar cles and events to the page and encouraging real me back and forth comments is key in making it a success. Best of all, it s free! Currently, of our 14 member clubs, 7 have Facebook. Two, the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Southeastern Michigan and the Columbine Norwegian Elkhound Associa on have no presence on the internet that I can find. If those club members are interested in launching a Facebook page and need help, let us know. Facebook is very easy to set up. In February, members from NEAA and the Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of Southern California came together and did a meet the breeds booth in San Diego at the Silverbay Kennel Club all-breed dog show. Silverbay is one of the oldest kennel clubs in the area and their events receive a lot of press and good a endance by the public. We were invited to par cipate and we did. We received a lot of posi ve feedback and we were able to distribute the NEAA flier to many a endees. Many took great interest in our dogs. Introducing our breed to the public is where it all begins. This is where the baby steps are taken. Next me you are approached about an event involving your dogs, think twice before you put it on disregard. You are the ambassadors for our breed. You are not only knowledgeable about our breed, but you now also know the importance of making a difference to the future of our breed. You don t have to be an expert to relate to the public and answer their ques ons. You don t even need to bring a dog. Just being at events such as this and talking about the virtues of our breed helps to promote. Together, we can make a difference and we must, before it s too late. 14

26 A Valuable Tool for ALL Norwegian Elkhounds Owners and Breeders In early 2000 the NEAA Canine Health and Research Committee worked in conjunction with the Orthopedic Foundation of America to formulate a health priorities survey. The survey is available to ALL Norwegian Elkhound owners and breeders at the OFA website click on surveys, or the NEAA web site click on breed health. Its purpose is to help determine if there are signi icant health concerns in Norwegian Elkhounds. The results will assist the club in tracking the overall health picture of Elkhounds helping us make better decisions about where to focus our efforts and money. Since going live in 2000, there have been 300 participants which certainly doesn t adequately re lect the breed population. The survey is very user friendly and hopes to capture a thumbnail picture of the health concerns of our breed. Please take a few moments to complete the survey and look at the current results. (Note: it takes approximately two minutes per dog to enter the information.) Please go to the OFA web site and review the survey. Then, pass the word to encourage ALL Elkhound owners and breeders to participate. * Corrected: The survey is also available on the NEAA website. HAVE YOU SOLD A PUPPY LATELY? In order to encourage new puppy buyers to join the NEAA, the Board has authorized new owners of Norwegian Elkhound puppies to be entitled to two (2) complimentary issues of the NE News. If you sell a puppy to a non-neaa member, certainly encourage them to join the NEAA. And as a little incentive, simply submit their name and address as a new puppy buyer to Ken Walker at webcontact@neaa.net, and Ken will enable the new owners to receive the complimentary issues of the NE News at no charge. A RE YOU MOVING? Send your new address to the Corresponding Secretary. 40 Dear NEAA Board and Members of GMNEA, I just wanted to take a minute to tell everyone what a great time I had at the NEAA Cavalcade of Events. It was such a wonderful opportunity to break winter hibernation, visit with friends and see beautiful examples of our breed. Throwing a party for 90+ from planning through execution is never an easy task. GMNEA did themselves proud! Thanks for your dedication and hard work. (By the way, who was in charge of the Weather Committee? WOW is all I can say on that front.) For those that couldn t make the celebration in WI, plan on Joining the Waggin Train in Again, thanks to all for an amazing experience. Leslie Forrest 40

41 An Ounce of Preven on by Leslie Forrest Ask any dog owner and they ll tell you that dogs schedule medical emergencies for holiday weekends. So, it didn t come as a surprise when last July 4th weekend, Tapper, our Energizer Bunny, seemed a bit lethargic. None of her symptoms seemed to rise to the level of an emergency, but, clearly, she wasn t herself. Her temperature was slightly elevated; her approach to ea ng was picky; she didn t care about cookies; and barking was something the other members of the kennel could handle. No, Tapper was definitely not herself. When she refused her morning meal on Monday, I took her temperature. It was 102. I called the clinic and le a message asking for an early appointment on Tuesday. She spent the rest of Monday sleeping, uninterested in the rest of the household s comings and goings. Monday evening she tried to eat but things didn t se le with her stomach. Houston, we have a problem! Bright and early Tuesday morning, we headed for the clinic. Since she d had nothing to eat, I knew we would be able to do fasted blood work. Before we le, I had the presence of mind to get a small, just in case, early morning urine sample. One look at the blood test results and Dr. Barb said, She s staying with me. I ll call you when we see how she responds to IVs and an bio cs. We re sending lab work and urine results to the University of Illinois and should have them back within 48 hours. While her skin looks good and she s not jaundice, I suspect that Tapper has leptospirosis. I knew that Tapper was poten ally in trouble. For those of you unfamiliar with Leptospirosis, it is an infec ous disease that causes serious illness in dogs, other animals, and people around the world. The disease is caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called leptospires that live in stagnant water or warm, wet soil. Lepto causes a variety of flu like symptoms, but it can develop into a more severe, lifethreatening illness that affects the kidneys, liver, brain, lungs and heart. Leptospirosis was once thought of as a warm-weather disease that occurred in the rural south. Now, however, it has been reported in the northwest, northeast, and upper Midwest regions of the United States, as well as suburban and city se ngs. No ma er where they live, dogs are at risk if they work, hunt, herd; live near water or wildlife; are exposed to rodents; or live in crowded, unclean kennel facili es. More than 80% of dogs with leptospirosis develop serious, short-term kidney problems. While most dogs do get be er with prompt treatment, dogs that suffer severe liver or kidney damage can die within days. Even dogs that do recover may s ll be at risk for chronic kidney failure or become carriers of the disease, spreading leptospires during urina on. While some dogs will have no obvious symptoms, early signs of leptospirosis usually appear about a week a er infec on and may include fever, muscle weakness, and a loss of appe te or energy. Some dogs may seem depressed. Other clinical signs include jaundice (yellow eyes or skin) and blood in the urine. Vomi ng and diarrhea may follow a er a few days, causing dogs to become dehydrated and very thirsty. This is a warning sign that the infec on has reached the kidneys and the dog needs immediate medical care. Lepto can be a very difficult disease to diagnose because it affects many different areas of the body and causes a variety of symptoms. However, blood tests and urinalysis will confirm any suspicion of the disease. BE AWARE: If your dog is diagnosed with lepto, you need to protect yourself and other family members, as the infec on can be spread to people. Use rubber gloves when handling your dog s urine specimen and when disinfec ng the dog s bedding, housing, and surrounding areas. The standard treatment for leptospirosis includes intravenous an bio cs and fluids, good nutri on, and suppor ve care. If treatment is started early enough, most dogs recover a er two weeks. A er hospital treatment, a course of oral an bio cs will be prescribed to make sure the infec on is gone and to keep your dog from becoming a carrier of the disease. In addi on to lowering your dog s risk of contrac ng leptospirosis by limi ng exposure to the previously men oned poten al sources of contamina on, the best way to protect your dog is with an annual vaccina on. The current vaccine protects against four of the most common types of leptospires and is generally well tolerated by most dogs. The blood and urinalysis results came back from the university in three days showing that Dr. Barb was correct. Tapper was low posi ve for leptospirosis. We caught the infec on early enough and it hadn t really taken a firm hold. S ll, treatment was essen al. We did follow-up blood work a er the first round of an bio cs which showed that Tapper was in the clear. Another ten days of medica on assured that there was no possibility of further shed of the leptospires in Tapper s urine. Tapper was not vaccinated against leptospirosis. We learned the hard, expensive way that an ounce of preven on is worth a pound of cure. 41
