NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND NEWS Norwegian Elkhound Association of America, Inc. September October 2014 President s Message The Autumn Leaves dri by my window Can you believe that Fall is upon us? The unusually cool summer has seamlessly turned into autumn, and my dogs are enjoying every minute of this gorgeous weather. Our members in MI couldn t have ordered a more beau ful weekend for their recent specialty, and members in MN, NJ, and CA are hoping for an instant replay in October for their shows. I know I m looking forward to the drive to MN and the beau ful colors of the season. Yes, my surgeon just gave me and the knee a thumbs up for the drive. I m packed and can t wait!!! Congratula ons to Dennis Bell and Loki on taking first place at the Grand Na onal Barn Hunt Championship compe on at Purina Farms in September. How wonderful to see an elkhound taking top honors, and we look forward to a blow by blow ar cle about the compe on. Take a few minutes to view the photos of Loki hun ng at We all join in congratula ng Loki and Dennis on a wonderful achievement. Mary Jo Benede, NEAA treasurer, has spent untold hours reworking the form for NEAA s financial reports, and the new format debuts in this Newsle er. I think this presenta on is clearer and affords the membership an opportunity to have an accurate, year-to-year comparison of the organiza on s financial ac vity. As always, the board and MaryJo welcome your comments and sugges ons. we do not have a chairperson for our rescue commi ee. I know members feel strongly about this being a part of the NEAA mission, but, to date, no one has stepped forward to chair the commi ee. The board welcomes your input and par cipa on. We are s ll looking for someone to take on the produc- on of the 2016 NEAA Yearbook. This is an extremely popular publica on as evidenced by the fact that the 2014 Edi on sold out at the specialty in MA. Perhaps you missed the Help Wanted ad in the last two Newsle ers. If so, please contact me to volunteer. Have you marked your calendars for the NEAA Cavalcade of Events in April 2015? GMNEA has a wonderful weekend planned, and we hope to see lots of member par cipa on. Informa on is available on the web site Finally, I ask that you seriously consider volunteering to fill the important posi ons that I have men oned in this message. NEAA can only be as successful as its members wish it to be. To paraphrase, the whole is equal to the sum of its working parts. Happy hounding, Pat The success of NEAA hinges on the willingness of its members to take on responsibility for the things they feel important. Despite reaching out to several people,

ILLUSTRATED GUIDE The Norwegian Elkhound Standard has been in existence for Many Years. Every breed has a standard a document that is like a blueprint that details what that par cular breed should look like what is acceptable and what is not. The standard is applied as a guide to structure, color, height, weight, eye and coat color, ear-set and movement. It covers all aspects of a breed and guides in the selec on of suitable breeding stock for future genera ons. The Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of America has recently developed an illustrated guide containing visual aids that assist in clarifying for the reader what an elkhound should be. Its always a treat to see Mother Nature's finest artwork in October. Second to that, it is fun to see old and new friends, and if we come home with a ribbon or two, that s the fros ng on the cake. In the past few months I sent out sunshine wishes to a few of our members. The saddest news I have is the loss of long me breeder of Kirksted Norwegian Elkhounds, Robert Ness. I did not know him well, but I think everyone he knew was a friend. I enjoyed my talks with him and love the pain ng of him on his bike with the dogs on my wall! (thanks Ginger) Our sincere sympathy goes out to his wife Ruth and family, and he will be remembered kindly. His dogs will live on in the lines of many of our wonderful dogs. A few members were either ill or in therapy for pains, and hopefully have recovered by this wri ng. They were Toni Welkes, Cece Cathey and Pa y Gamsby. Others of us broke something! Michelle Bendickson broke a tooth, me a toe and Buzz Carter a leg! OUCH! Dee Bates -Roberts had eye surgery. I also just heard that Joanne Tichnor is ba ling a serious illness. We want you all to heal and be well. We hope all the treatments, therapies and medica ons work to put you all back on the road to health and happiness. A bit of bright and happy news to the report, there is a beau ful li le new baby boy Alexander, and Skye Masson is the mother! We are all so happy for this new li le elkhounder in our world! Be sure to let me know of anyone in need of sunshine, thanks so much to those who have. Kari Olson, Sunshine Coordinator longships@mwt.net 5

Report from your AKC Delegate Lori Webster First things first-thanks so much to Maggie for all the years she devoted to this very important position representing our club to AKC. Your experience in this capacity has been most valuable. To all our members, please feel free to contact me about your AKC related questions or concerns and if I don't know the answer I'll find someone who does. Highlights from the Sept Delegates Meeting Chic Program o 10 years old with almost 10,000 dogs registered Two Shows in One Day Pilot Program o Employed 3 times with great success o Marquette KC in Michigan participated with their Sept. Shows and had a 15% increase in entries (and a very respectable Elkhound entry I hear!) Parent Club News o AKC will be seeking help from Parent Clubs and Delegates to ensure knowledgeable breed judges are approved o Looking into requiring Judges to provide proof of education for each breed on application o AKC discussing contacting parent clubs before approval of Breeder of Merit applicants o Establishing a Parent Club Rescue Alliance list AKC Good Citizen Program o Now 25 years old AKC Facebook page o 2.1 million fans o Newly added AKC breeder education and government relations pages Woofpedia website o Less than 1 year old with impressive stats as of August 1.1 million unique visitors 4.2 million page views National Owner Handled Series o In 2014 almost 600 NOHS events offered Legislative Caucus, USDA, Animal Welfare Act and APHIS o AKC developing 2 new programs to increase our visibility with Legislators o To award approx. 50 "AKC Legislator of the Year" to State and Federal Lawmakers o who play an important role protecting rights of responsible owners and breeders o Collaborating with other groups such as AVMA and Cat Fanciers Assoc. to develop o a law school outreach program for future state and congressional Lawmakers o For those who haven't read Amy Peterson's Legislative Corner (NE news, Nov/Dec 2013 issue) and Ned Welkes' Legislative Liaison Report (NE news July/August 2014 issue) I strongly suggest you go back and read them so you will understand this important update. Con nued on Page 9 8

USDA, Animal Welfare Act and APHIS o Julian Prager (AKC Delegate for Central Florida KC) has been hired by USDA to assist APHIS in defining the new "de minimis" exclusion in the Animal Welfare Act o De minimis for the purposes of this regulation means basically you (breeder or rescuer) have little to do with interstate commerce, but NOT that you have NOTHING to do with it. o For example, what level of shipping you think ought to be allowed as an exemption for people who are breeders/rescuers (not retail rescue) o What do you think we should do about low number registration breeds to provide an exemption for them as breeding purposes is currently an exemption from AWA regulation o Julian is asking for input from all of us to help define this exemption in a way that will work I in the REAL world, not in the fancy abstract word of the Government We now have an important advocate in APHIS and he is asking for the dog fancy to help him. Julian would prefer not to receive thousands of individual s but rather to send your ideas to one person representing our club who could condense and organize them, then forwarding to him. Please send your ideas to our own NEAA Legislative Liaison Ned Welkes at ellyka@optonline.net Your NEAA Delegate to the AKC Lori Webster Lwebster5@verizon.net Versatility Update Kari Olson The AKC keeps adding to the list... As of June 2014, AKC will acknowledge titles from the North American Diving Dogs organization. My elkhounds don't particularly like water so I have a hard time picturing an elkhound in a diving competition, but it s open to all breeds, and, like several other activities, for $20 they will list the title after your dog's name. The others, are Lure Coursing, Pet Therapy, Search and Rescue, Flyball and Barn Hunt. So far elkhounds have had titles recognized in Lure Coursing (2), Pet Therapy (7 ) and Barn Hunt (7). Barn Hunt has been the most fascinating activity they have added so far. Our elkhounds have been one of the few hunting breeds without a hunt test. Sporadically, some of us have tried to encourage interest in creating a test for our dogs to no avail. Barn Hunt is a far cry from hunting moose or bears in Norway, but, it does use scenting to locate an animal. Barn Hunt, which was originally for terriers, involves a dog using their scenting ability to find a rat in a pvc tube, in a maze of hay bales. This sport, opened to all breeds in April of So far we have had 7 elkhounds who have titled in Barn Hunt. History was made this year, when the Barn Hunt Association held their very first NATIONAL BARN HUNT CHAMPIONSHIP. Very exciting history was made, when the NATIONAL GRAND CHAMPION was announced after the competition; it was a NORWEGIAN ELKHOUND! He won over all of the breeds, even those whose job has been vermin hunting. I think this is one of the most exciting wins ever. I asked his owner, Dennis Bell to tell us a little about this in his own words. Congratulations to Dennis Bell and NGCR CH JANOR S GUILTY AS CHARGED CD GN RAE2 AX AXJ MXP2 MJP OF OFP RATM OVNEX! 9 Con nued on next page

Loki s Barn Hunt Odyssey Loki has always shown a very high prey drive. We are outside every day, either hiking or on a neighborhood walk, which includes a natural space. He is ALWAYS on the hunt (he caught and killed a mouse today, in fact) so when I heard about barn hunt I knew he'd love it and I had little doubt he'd probably excel at it (ego talking). Our irst trial was June 1 & 2, 2013, in Castle Rock, WA, and we were hooked. On what would have been Loki's Novice title at that show we got an NQ because I was in too big of a hurry to call "rat." Rats. It was our only NQ until we got into Master level. Our Q rate in Master is about 50%. In the beginning I would have Loki take the tunnel right at the start to get it out of the way. Also in the early days I had to work to get him to hunt high because he was used to hunting on the ground. It's much more dif icult to get him to take the tunnel now because he's learned there are no rats in there. And I couldn't keep him from climbing if I tried. Plus, when it's our turn and we start for the ring, step back and stay out of the way! Thus endeth the prelude to the barn hunt national. Then we heard about the irst ever barn hunt national championship in Gray Summit, Mo. I didn't want to make the drive from suburban Portland, Or, to the St Louis area again, especially so soon after our last cross country drive, but this was the FIRST one. I came up with other things to do to help justify the trip because, well, this was the FIRST one. I know Loki's good (excessive con idence in my boy) so how cool it would be if we could win it, not just for ourselves, but I also really wanted Loki to put on a good performance on behalf of our breed. Finally, the punchline: At the nationals each dog competed on each of two Open courses on Sat, Sept 6. The 50 dogs with the highest combined scores advanced to Senior and Master on Sunday. All of the courses were supersized and scoring was 100 points for a Q and all except Master earned one point for each second under maximum course time. Loki inished in the top half of the large dog quali iers on both Open runs so I 10

knew we were in good shape. On Sunday Loki inished the Senior course in 1:52.00 for 3rd among large dogs so I was content we were in very good shape. I worked both an Open course on Sat and the Master course early Sunday and knew there was a very high failure rate. In Master it just happened that Loki had 5 rats to ind, found the last after he'd done the tunnel, so with the 5th rat we were done. Four Qs in four runs, one of only 3 dogs to do so at this trial. Loki's 3:05 in Master was good for 1st among large dogs and combined with his speed in getting those other Qs he earned enough points to become the irst EVER Barn Hunt Grand National Champion! Hot diggity! YEA Loki! Go elkhounds! A new title was created for the winners of the 3 categories at nationals. Loki's is RGNC, so he is currently RGNC Janor's Guilty As Charged RATI RATM. After 3 more Qs in Master we drop the RATM and add RATCH (champion) in front of his name. If we'd teamed with our friend from Oregon it's possible we would have inished irst in the team hunt, earning enough points for 2nd in Games and 1st in Versatility. That's woulda, coulda, mighta, but there's next year. Finally, barn hunt is a lot of fun to participate in and fun and interesting to watch the different dogs (and handlers) work. I never once had to direct Loki where to hunt at this trial to ind any of his total 13 rats, only to make him take the tunnel. (By the way, his Q in Master at this trial was his 13th at that level.) At a couple of points in Master he was air scenting along the back side of the ring toward the rat staging area, feet DOWNWIND of the ring, so I had to get on him about that. He knows this game so well. We'd be waiting in the blind, patiently waiting our turn and Loki would just be sitting or laying politely. The steward would call his name, I'd stand up and say, "Okay, let's go ind those wild animals." At that he'd jump to his feet and DRAG me to the ring, barking all the way ("faster, faster") and not stopping until the leash was off and I told him "go ind 'em out." And boy, did he. I've already challenged other elkhounders to get a dynasty going, but I would like to see our sniff machines dominate the winner's podium across the board. The 2015 national is only 11 months away so let's get ratting. And thanks for allowing me to brag again, it keeps my grin going. Dennis and Loki "Ratlegs" Bell 11

Robert ( Bob ) Kiracofe Ness April 29, September 1, 2014 My associa on with Bob and his family began in 1971 when I had the honor of judging a match show for the fledgling Norwegian Elkhound Club of the Potomac Valley. The club at that point in me had not gained AKC recogni on and this show was to be a qualifying event for them. I remember there was a very big entry with puppies and adults from many of the leading kennels of the day. In the ring walked a young blond boy with a lovely yearling dog on the end of the lead and at the end of the day, they stood alone as Best in Match. Inquiring about this dog a er the judging I was told he was bought at a pet store and his name was Captain James T. Kirk! The boy s father produced a pedigree on this dog which showed that he was linebred on many good Branstock dogs, a leading kennel of the day. The handler was young David Ness who had come to the show with his parents Bob and Ruth and from that day forward, a forty plus year rela onship with a wonderful family began. Eager to learn more about Elkhounds, bloodlines, breeding, care, grooming, etc. I remember many hand-wri en le ers and phone calls back and forth from my home in New Jersey to Kensington, Maryland along with mee ngs at shows, and reciprocal visits and stays when traveling to shows. At first, Bob and Ruth were content with several pet dogs which they had, but when they embarked on finding show and breeding stock, they did their homework and were careful in their selec ons. Their first Champion was Ch. Kamgaard Kamelot, CD followed soon a er by SBIS Ch. Kamgaard Kiss Me Kate, CD and they were off and running! Bob took great pride in pu ng the obedience tles on these two and handled them to many of their show wins as well. The Kirkssted kennel had begun! 22

Bob had a Doctorate degree in Organic Chemistry from Ohio State University and worked for the Na onal Ins tutes of Health in carbohydrate research for 30 years, was a very ac ve Boy Scout leader, a driving force in his local church, as well as being a loving father to sons Bill and David and daughter Carol. He and Ruth became very ac ve in the Norwegian Elkhound Club of the Potomac Valley holding many offices, organizing and helping with many events and being passionately involved with their rescue program. I can remember mee ng quite a few Elkhounds being fostered in their home who never le! Busy as he was, Bob always found me for anyone interested in Elkhounds and acted as a mentor to many. Bob supported the Norwegian Elkhound Associa on of America in many ways and I know that one of his proudest moments was when he handled his homebred Ch. Kirkssted Olav to win the Na onal Specialty in 1986 in Houston, Texas. Si ng next to Ruth at the moment of the win, I had to grab her before she fell out of her chair! A lot can be said about the character of a person by the comments made by their compe tors, but I know it would be impossible to find anyone walking the face of this earth who could possibly have an unkind thing to say about Bob. A more loving and compassionate gentleman you will never find. Bob gave of himself to so many causes and cared about so many things. His life was rich and full and at age 92, I doubt that many people gave and got as much out of life as Bob did. I only wish that Ruth, who suffers with Alzheimer s Disease, could know how much he will be missed by so many in different ways. Rest in peace dear friend. You were so loved. From one of your greatest admirers, Maggie Mo 23

Nothing else to report Report of the Corresponding Secretary Karen Freudendorf received mail from AKC addressing establishment of a Rescue e-list for Parent Clubs. Karen also reported that she had talked to Leslie Trapnell about status on NEAA s Meet The Breeds booth at Eukanuba. If volunteers do not come forward, Leslie plans to work the booth herself. Bill To en was approved in August as a signer on NEAA bank accounts. A separate savings account has been opened with Dollar Bank for each trust fund and the June 30 trust fund balances were transferred from the opera ng account to the trust accounts. Addi onally, the total of the June 30 reserved special funds was transferred from the opera ng checking account to the general savings account. Mary Jo stated that these funds belong to NEAA, but they are just reserved for a specific purpose and can be combined. The trust accounts and the general savings will earn interest but not much. The last of the old Cer ficates of Deposit will at mature in September and will be deposited to the opera ng account. Annual review Ron Peters has agreed to conduct the annual review of the treasury records for the year July 1, 2013 through June 30, Bev Evans served as treasurer through March 31, 2014 and Mary Jo served the last quarter. The Commi ee members put a great deal of thought into the input from the Fancy in order to produce meaningful recommenda ons that will move the sport of obedience into the future, while keeping in mind the importance of the past. The Commi ee met again in August to complete the review. Addi onal recommenda ons are being published here for your comments. The recommenda ons were accidentally posted on September 24th before the commi ee had a chance to review the final document. The recommenda ons were immediately removed pending the OAC review. In order to encourage new puppy buyers to join the NEAA, the Board has authorized new owners of Norwegian Elkhound puppies to be entitled to two (2) complimentary issues of the NE News. If you sell a puppy to a non-neaa member, certainly encourage them to join the NEAA. And as a little incentive, simply submit their name and address as a new puppy buyer to Ken Walker at webcontact@neaa.net, and Ken will enable the new owners to receive the complimentary issues of the NE News at no charge. 31

Odin s Promise by Sandy Brehl 230 pages - soft cover price is Published by Crispin Books ( ) Release date is May 17, 2014 Odin s Promise is historical fiction for middle-grade readers, a novel depicting the first year of German occupation of Norway as seen through the eyes of a young girl. Eleven-year-old Mari grew up tucked safely under the wings of her parents, grandma, and her older siblings. When Hitler s troops invaded Norway under the guise of occupying a friendly country, she is forced to grow beyond her little girl nickname and comfortable patterns to deal with harsh new realities. At her side for support and protection is Odin, her faithful elkhound. After she witnesses a terrifying event on the mountainside, truths are revealed: the involvement of her family and friends in the resistance; the value of humor in surviving hard times; the hidden radio in her grandma s cottage. Odin, not one for quiet resistance, makes an enemy of soldiers who patrol the area. The year will bring many challenges, as Mari confronts danger, develops her inner strength and voice, and finds she is able to endure hardship and heartache. Next scheduled event 2015 National Norwegian Elkhound Competition-Full day (signing, meet/greet) in Wisconsin. 40
