1 TheDecoy News The Official Newsletter of the Minnesota Decoy Collectors Association New Show Location is a Big Hit! May, Show Highlights This year s exciting show included: Minneapolis Airport Marriott New Show Location We had a big change this year at the Minnesota Decoy Association s annual show. For the first time in a very long time we had a need to change the show s venue. The razing of the Ramada, previously known to most as the Thunderbird, meant new accommodations were necessary. A combination of hard work by the leadership team of the MDCA lead by John Southworth and his very capable wife JoAnne and good fortune led us a few hundred yards down the road to the Minneapolis Airport Marriott. This facility offered everything we needed including; location, guest suites, parking, halls, restaurant, bar and meeting rooms. Altogether a difficult task to find something to meet all of our diverse needs. But from all the great feedback board members have been receiving the new location has been a hit and went off as if there was hardly a change of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the board members who helped make this potentially difficult change happen so low key. Read more about the show in the President s Letter on page 2. I also think most would agree that a very welcome Remembering 10 by-product of the change of venue was an upgrade in virtually all Youth Decoy Results 11 aspects of the show. We look forward to seeing everyone back at this location next year! New Evans Factory Book

2 MDCA 2017 Newsletter The High-Ball thoughts from our President Hello to all of you MDCA members, Our most recent annual show was held February 1st through February 4th. It was an exciting time for all of us due to the fact that so many changes in our show and location were finally happening. Last March, we learned that the Ramada/old Thunderbird hotel was going to be torn down. This would have been our 30th year at that hotel. A great deal of good memories and great times were enjoyed there. But, it was time to find a new home for our annual event. After looking at many sites, we were fortunate to find a nice hotel that was large enough to handle our exhibit hall, and of course was available at the time we have traditionally had our event. We had many positive comments on the show, and most thought it was a very good move. The Minneapolis Airport Marriott did everything they could to make us feel welcome. As a Board, we decided we wanted to encourage some changes in our exhibits to make things more interesting and fun. I think the Dick Brust Memorial Vintage Decoy Contest was a great change and got more collectors involved. Our job now is to see what we want to improve and continue to move forward to keep our Minnesota show one of the BEST in the Midwest. Thanks to all of you who attended. We hope you enjoyed all that we had to offer. The room to room sales on Wednesday and Thursday, and the big show on Friday and Saturday, with our auction, exhibits, and all of our exhibit hall vendors is enough to keep us feeling that Decoy Rush. Hope to see all of you next year. Don t Forget! Early Bird Admission for only + membership gets you in at 9:00 AM $20.00 Best Regards, John Southworth John A. 9 Auction Highlights Wally Wegleitner The annual Friday night auction was met with a lot of uncertainties. A new location for the show, a new separate auction room, will there be quality decoys in the auction, will people attend? I can tell you, it perhaps was the best, highest quality auction to date. Of course, nothing happens by accident. The success came because of many highly talented volunteers that work so hard to make this annual event possible. The auction room that held 100+ chairs was completely full 15 minutes before the 7:00 p.m. starting time. Doc Baillie started right on time and blew through the 70 auction lots at a brisk, fun pace. There was a strong MN decoy representation this year. Some of the top decoys included, a Canvasback Hen Heron Lake, by Bill Peter that brought $1,300 and a Canvasback Drake Tack Eye from the James Ford Bell rig that brought $450. A pair of Mallard s Minnow Chaser, by Marty Hanson that brought $1,300. Also, a pair of Blue Wing Teal, by Marty Hanson that brought $1,700. A superb lot of early Herter s canvas covered decoys hammered at a cool $1,000. Many nice Mason decoys, including a pair of Mallard Challenge grade brought $1,400. Greetings Members! Table Talk Table Chairman Bob Sauer Our 2017 show is but a GREAT memory. Long range planning made the Minneapolis Airport Marriott Hotel a wonderful meeting place. Spacious sleeping/trading rooms, tasty restaurant food and auction, display, hospitality, and exhibition rooms were there for us. Once again the MDCA membership was able to contribute a nice donation to our local youth decoy carvers. A study decoy carved by Dave Jacobs, brought $110. Generous pass the hat donations brought in $252. Thank you for all your generous donations. In summation, I express my sincere gratitude to all the wonderful members that made this annual event happen. Doc Baillie, our auctioneer, Barb Hanson, Sherrie Wegleitner, Kristin Wegleitner, our clerking team. Alan Baake and Carter Stenberg our excellent ring men. Last, but not least, our accounting clerk, Larry Thomforde. A great big team success with everyone doing a fantastic job! Next year s 2018 auction will start at 7:00 p.m. Get your consignment forms in early. Our 70 decoy limit fills up fast. It s been a pleasure to work with each & every one of our great members. Sincerely, Wally All tables were rented out. Exhibitors brought a great assortment of decoys. Thank you all for adapting to the change of hotel and rooms. Keeping getting your checks in early for tables and membership. It is a pleasure to work with so many friends. Remember our 2018 show is a week later as the Super Bowl is being hosted here in Minnesota. See you in February 7-10, 2018 or at the next show. Bob MDCA 2017 Newsletter Doc Bailey and Crew a full house with standing room only crowded into the decoy auction and at times overflowed into the hallways. This year s auction was the highest grossing ever led by some strong Heron Lake beauties! Farewell to Board Member & Decoy Auction Chairmen Wally Wegleitner Wally Wegleitner with a Heron Lake decoy from the auction. Wally Wegleitner, who has served on the MDCA board of directors from about 2002 through 2017 is stepping down from his position in April, That makes 15 years of dedicated service. Most people will think of Wally as the decoy auction guy, and while that is true, Wally brought many other skill sets to the organization. Wally is stepping down to spend more time with family and to pursue other activities. Wally will be missed greatly and so too will his wife Sherrie. Sherrie was an indispensable help and fixture helping Wally at the auction. It s almost as if we lost two board members! We on the board and the entire Minnesota Decoy Collector s Association wish to thank Wally for his many years of dedicated service Good Hunting, and wish both Wally and Sherrie the best of luck in their next chapter of life. Don t be strangers and come back and see us often! 9

11 MDCA 2017 Newsletter Wow!...What a Turn-out!!! What Nice Decoys!!! A fine group of youth participated in the decoy carving competition. Front row starting from the left: Abigail Gau, Sam Erickson, Lily Homan, Gabby Senapatiratne, Kylie Larson, Emma Gardner, Lydia Klersy, Amber Casperson, Dylan Larson and Sam Casperson. Back row: an adult helper, Larry Homan, Mark Casperson, adult helper, Matt Gau, Allison Brostrom, Tyler Larson, Jacob Senapatiratne and group leader, David Jacobs (Andrew Quinn also entered a decoy but not present). David Jacobs is a member of the Minnesota Decoy & Wildfowl Carving Club and mentored this fine group of young people in the art of decoy making. As evidenced in the photo, some very fine work was done indeed. The future of our hobby and the great folk art of decoy making seems to be in very capable hands. Garry Torkilsen and Patti Jensen with the Dave Jacobs study bird made for the youth competition. Garry won the bird in the auction with all proceeds plus a sizeable donation raised from the crowd going to Dave to use for materials for next year s youth entries. A big thank you to Garry and everyone who donated! Youth in Good Hands In what has now become a tradition, once again this year the MDCA auctioned off a very special decoy in the middle of our Friday night auction. Dave Jacobs from the Minnesota Decoy & Wildfowl Carving Club who has been mentoring a group of youths in the art of decoy making donated his study decoy to the auction. In the process of teaching the youngsters, Dave makes a demonstration decoy to help them with the various steps. Dave wished to auction off his decoy in order to use the profits to support the youth program. The MDCA also donates a cash award to this endeavor and enthusiastically agreed. The bidding was brisk and the bird hammered at $110. Doc Baillie offered up a twenty dollar bill as a donation to the youth and many others pitched in as well ($252). In all, including the MDCA donation ($100), over $470 was raised for supplies for next year and hopefully even more youth carvers. Way to go members! A big thank you to Garry Torkilsen for his $ winning bid! Watch for a Hooded Merganser demonstration decoy to be auctioned off at next year s big show. Bidding on the decoy would be a great way to show your support of our next generation of carvers! 14 entries in the youth division marks a highwater turnout for this event. Great going gang!! First place went to Sam Erickson, second to Lily Homan and third was Abigail Gau. 11
