Martial Arts Research Systems Maphilindo Silat curriculum Introduction The MARS approach is simple, it is forever changing and evolving. With that said please learn this material and understand that like life, it is forever growing and changing. What the MARS association strives for is people of high character and morality. MARS will seek a students dismissal for any person who abuses there skills. History Maphilindo Silat is a compilation of the Malaysian, Philippines and the Indonesian martial arts. The MARS curriculum is a compilation of the systems compiled primarily by Guro Dan Inosanto. Ron Balicki began his training with Dan Inosanto in Through Dan Inosanto, Ron was introduced to Indonesian systems such as: Bersilat Kuntao Silat Pekiti Tershia Bukti Negara Filipino Kali Pentchak Silat Suntokan Pag Kali Kali Sikaron
Panantukan Mande Muda Serak Kari Silat Buno Pukalon Penjak Silat Penchak Silat Through all these respective systems MARS continues to evolve. MARS continues to search out more information placing the association and students involved in MARS in a mode of continual growth. Instructors who influenced Guro Dan Inosanto's Maphilindo Silat: Pendekar Herman Suwanda Guro Rita Suwanda Pendekar Akiat Pendekar Eddie Mustafha Pendekar Surada "Eddie" Jafari Pendekar Paul De Thouras Maha Guro Victor De Thouras Pendekar John Dejunges Tuhan Guro Leo Gaji Guro lucky Lukay Ron Balicki received personal instruction from the following instructors: Guro Dan Inosanto Larry Lindenmann Pendekar Herman Suwanda Guro Rita Suwanda
Pendekar Akiat Pendekar Paul De Thouras Maha Guro Victor De Thouras Guro Ted Lukay Situation, politics and hurt feelings. Through the years of study there are times that people fall out of favor with each other. Ron Balicki, like Dan Inosanto have fallen out of favor with some of these great men. It is still important for Ron Balicki and the Martial Arts Research System association to pay respect and acknowledge all it's influences those that we still train with, influences of the past that have grown apart and some who have past away. Philosophy A Silat practitioner is bound by no rules. So, the need for sportsmanship is of no consequence to the practitioner. Basic stance position differs from that of a western boxer. Although at times it may look the same, there are fundamental and philosophical differences that a Silat practitioner strives for that a boxer need not deal with. For instance a Silat practitioner is more a gorilla style fighter where a boxer is a sport fighter. Targets and weapons will differ dramatically from that of a boxer or sport martial artist. Eyes, groin and an opponents joints are all valid targets and are looked upon as preferable target to seek. Weapons such as knives, swords, sticks, staffs and projectile weapons will be covered as the student progresses.
Triple A A Silat practitioner in MARS is taught the theory of "Triple A." Accept A Silat practitioner must accept things for what they are. Adapt A Silat practitioner must adapt to the truth of the obstacle he/she must overcome. Act A Silat practitioner must act and overcome. 1) Basic Stance A Silat practitioner keeps a low stance preferably to hug the ground. It is believed that there is more stability in a low crouch versus standing tall. A Silat practitioner is always ready to take the fight to the ground. If you should fall while fighting it is believed in Silat that by being in a low stance you are already more likely to prevent injury should a fall or trip were to happen. Sempak - Dempak The Sempak and Dempak is the sitting position that you will fall into. It is used for aggression and defense in a confrontation. Sempak When the practitioner retreats down in to the sitting position. Dempak
When the practitioner advances forward dropping into the sitting position. Age or injury may be a factor in how far down a practitioner will drop their level. There is no right or wrong in this instant. The drop will differ as to the practitioners ability and flexibility. Like in Yoga there is no perfect pose. Each person does their best and should challenge themselves. 2) Terms Due to how many martial arts systems and influences MARS has drawn from it is hard to place one phrase or term to a large number of techniques. MARS has narrowed down many of the terms down so the practitioner can more easily follow the curriculum. Out of respect MARS tries to give respect to all the martial arts systems that it draws from. 3) Basic Terminology Adat The written and unwritten code of conduct Buah Fruit of the art Dalem Inside Dempak Forward drop Hari Mau Tiger Kaki Leg Kinjit Compression Kunchi - Kunsi Lock Lanka Footwork pattern Luar Outside Myne Po The art of fight Pitchihan A piece of the puzzle Pukalan To fight Puter Kepala Turn head throw
Sapu Sweep Sikurum Footwork map Sempak Retreating drop Siko Knee Tarik Kepala Pull head throw Tiga Triangle Trima Kasi Thank You Note: Testing A person who already tested in the MARS Filipino Kali curriculum will already be credited for the testing in Maphilindo Silat. Testing must be preformed in front of Ron Balicki unless there has been another arrangement has been previously made by Ron Balicki and said adjunct tester. Student must preform all material unless student is not physically competent due to injury or other physical reason why said person is unable to preform said technique. If a student is unable to preform a technique they must advise Ron Balicki before test.
Salutation Filipino Kali 4 Count Bow I come with an open heart and an open mind. I present myself to the best of my ability I extend the hand of friendship over the hand of war May we shed no blood 12 Count Bow Bukti Negara I present myself to the creator. In the beginning I present myself to the best of my ability. I ask to receive from the creator in the knowledge of the art. I receive fro the creator the things that I do not use or understand.
