1 Guildford Fencing Club s 1(:6/(77(5 Editor, Julie Schofield Issue Seven, New Series January 2003 Hi Everyone, Christmas again, how the year flies. We hope you all had a good season. Membership continues to grow. The two Beginners Courses were well attended, especially the Junior Course. We would like to welcome all our new Members and hope they have many years of happy fencing with us. We welcome Terry Kington to our coaching staff, Terry is an experienced epee coach. Terry is very interested in teaching epee to beginners. We would also like to thank Andrew Lee for his help with Juniors. Andrew has agreed to run the next Junior beginners course in January. The Club does not at present have a written Constitution, many of our grant giving bodies ask for one. Therefore, the Committee has agreed a Constitution which we will be presenting to members for adoption at an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held at 8 p.m. on the 10th January, The meeting will be held at the school gyms and fencing will continue as normal. We hope that this will give the opportunity for members to attend, please note that parents of Junior members are allowed a vote for every fully paid up child under the age of 14. Notice of the EGM is enclosed with this Newsletter. The Club Handicap was very successful, particularly in regard to the number of entrants. However, the large entry meant that there was a considerable wait for some fencers on the first evening, we hope this didn t spoil your enjoyment. The Competition was won by Simon Wood, James Frost was second and Chris Hider third. Congraulations! Full results can be found on page 2. The next club competition will be the Club Sabre competition on the 17th January. So make a date in your new diary! Other Club competition dates can be found on page 3. A large number of Juniors entered the Surrey Age Groups and Sir William Perkins, and we particularly congratulate the fencers who gained medals at the Surrey Age Groups (Basil Jennings and Edmund Hartland - silver; and Alec Johnson, and Christopher Schofield bronze). Full results can be found on page 2. Several of fencers have entered Opens for the first time this year. We wish all success to Steve Pope, Chris Hider, Ian Sander, Vilya Harvey and Chris Schofield. We would like to congratulate Charles Price for qualifying for the National Age Groups for the South Region and Chris Schofield who was selected to fence in the Cadet Winton, held at Millfield School. The South East Region had a mainly young and inexperienced team this year, but still finished fourth. In fact, Christopher enjoyed the experience so much, he is contemplating going on the Millfield Summer Course next August.. Last year with 180 places, the Course was oversubscribed this year, there are 240 places and a staff of 24. The Course runs from the 18th to 22nd August. If anyone else is interested, talk to Trevor; I have copies of the enrolment form. Fencing commences on the 10th January. There will be no fencing on the 28th February. Half-term. Last night of fencing is the 11th April. We will be running a combined Junior session on the last night from 7.30 to 8.30 only. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Julie Schofield Page 1

3 Coaches Report December 2002 The last 4 months have flown by since we restarted in September. This is mostly dueto the increased level of member activity during the evening sessions. Both junior and adult sections seemed to have found a new higher level of enthusiasm. From my point of view it is good to see more of you becoming interested in entering competitions. This is true of all the membership, juniors and adults alike. The success of the second hand fencing equipment has had a hand in this as it has enabled people to obtain essential equipment ie Breeches more easily. Those observant among you will not have failed to notice a new face offering to give lessons, mainly in Epee. I am sure you have all introduced yourselves to Terry by now. If not please do so soon. He is an extremely experienced Epee coach and we are very lucky to have him helping us. Those interested in Epee should seek him out regularly to obtain lessons. If any juniors are interested in trying epee please let me or Tim know perhaps we can convince Terry to run a 7.30 to 8.30 junior epee class. I have recently started to incorporate both junior and adult sabre lessons on a more regular basis. Is this what you all want? Please let me know. Constructive comments are always welcome. Finally a big congrats to all those who took part in competitions, both internally this term and externally, this term. Probably a record number for the last 10 years. Keep this up, PLEASE! Have a good Xmas and New Year. Trevor Competitions- How to enter and What to do It occurs to me that some of our members are reluctant to enter external competitions because they don t know how easy it is. This is a rough guide to help. Stage 1 First ensure that you are a member of British Fencing Association. Forms are simple to fill in and easily obtained from either myself or BFA website. A small annual fee gives insurance and access to sword magazine plus fixture list details. Stage 2 Obtain entry form for competition concerned. Direct from organisers or ask me (or Julie). Send at least 14 days prior to date of competition, preferably earlier, enclosing SAE where required. Keep a copy as it may contain vital details like venue and report times. It will also act as reminder to you. Fees vary but normally no more than 10 to 12 for a days fencing. Very good value for money. Stage 3 Before the competition ensure that any equipment you are borrowing will either be available on the day or borrowed in advance. There is no substitute for having your own. (Continued on page 4) Page 3

4 (Continued from page 3) Make arrangements to return borrowed equipment as required. (Any Club equipment should be signed for, there is a fee of 2 to borrow Club electrical equipment. Ed.) Stage 4 On the day take fencing equipment, BFA membership card, food and drink and any other comforts you may need for the day. Don t plan any other activity for the afternoon or early evening! Spectators take trainers. Some venues are very protective of their gym floor and will not allow outside shoes to ruin it. In some venues food and drink cannot be consumed in the gym. Remember organisers and referees are all volunteers. So leave them alone to get on with their jobs as efficiently and happily as possibly. Don t get in their way. There will be pauses between the various rounds of the competitions so bring a book, portable CD player or some such thing. Also take a tracksuit to put on between rounds to save getting cold. Arrive at least 15 mins before official report time and book in and showing BFA membership card. Find a quiet corner or spot to settle yourself and your bags down. Most competitions will start within 30 mins of report time if you are lucky. Choose a time to warm up prior to this and have at least one practice on a box. This makes you competition sharp and checks that all your equipment is in working order. Organisers won t mind you doing this, it checks their equipment as well. All you have to do is find a partner to fence. Don t be shy, ask the person next to you. MAKE FRIENDS. Stage 5 Having enjoyed your days fencing. Pack ALL your things and slide off home. Do ensure that your days fencing is indeed over ie you have actually been knocked out in the Direct Elimination Stage of the competition. If in doubt ask the referee. Generally Competitions are about enjoying a happy days fencing. The way to judge the success of the day from your own point of view is to ask yourself Could I Have Fenced Any Better? or Did I Do All The Fencing Moves As Well As I New How and Simply Lost To A Better Opponent?. A successful days fencing can be judged not solely on winning and losing but on how you performed relative to your experience and how much you learned for another time. Remember when the world seems to be against you, and you are suffering the frustration or depression of defeat, ask yourself the above questions. If you still feel you failed in one aspect or another see me or Tim. Between us we have over 60 years experience. Very finally there is no such thing as a lost cause. Try remember not just the things that went wrong but also the things that went well and report back to me. I am here to help. HAPPY COMPETITION FENCING Trevor Please remember to be safe. Wear a plastron (or Kevlar) when you fence. We recommend you join British Fencing; membership is required for many external competitions, and benefits include insurance when fencing and notification of competition dates. Page 4
