2 Corvette Expressions 3rd Edition - Volume 143 August, 2018 It's been a busy summer for Corvette Express. Lots of activities, as usual This month is the Corvettes at Carlisle show, as well as other car and street rod events taking place in NY, NJ, and PA. As a reminder, this is the time to "recruit' new potential members by reaching out and inviting fellow Corvette owners to an event and/or meeting. Also please forward any member "news" to Carol Heh for sunshine recognition and any member Corvette advertising to Lisa Force for this newsletter. It looks like we're on track for another successful year... I thank everyone for keeping the Corvette Express wheels in motion. See you at the August meeting. Yours in Corvettes, Rob Lombardi Greetings, and welcome to the August, 2018 issue of Corvette Expressions. Wow, talk about lots of fun activities! Club members were certainly kept busy the last several weeks! Let s start with a five day cruise to the lovely state of Maine beginning on June 22. Thanks to our activities director, Bill Nagle, and wife Donna who organized this fun trip, and Lynn Schneiderman, Bill Zide, and any other members who contributed the fabulous pictures which can be seen in this issue. Ice cream, anyone?? Members said YES when they met at Jersey Freeze in Freehold on July 13. If you ve never had a chance to go, Jersey Freeze night usually takes place on a few Friday nights in the summer. Most members who go bring their Vettes (although it s not mandatory) and they park along the perimeter of the large parking lot. It s a great way to get to know each other! Two days later, Dave Schneiderman led a lovely Sunday cruise to Cape May on July 15, followed by a trip to the Cape May Zoo and a tasty BBQ lunch. Great job, Dave! Finally, Lynne Schneiderman organized a fun excursion to Ocean Grove on July 19. Members brought a brown bag dinner and were treated to lovely evening in this quaint old town. And let s not forget Day s Ice Cream! Next month, on Saturday, August 11, Dave S. and Bill Z. have organized a Hot Dog Run. Participating members will sample hotdogs at various venues, and will then rate each one. For more information, and to see the evaluation form, please go to pages 16 and 17 in this newsletter. The next club meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 1. See you then! Lisa Force Newsletter Editor -2-

4 Bar Harbor Cruise - June 22 - June 26 Club members had a wonderful time in the beautiful state of Maine! Points of interest visited on the way to Portland were Wiscasset Village to peruse the shops, the lovely Rockport Harbor, and the mustsee Trenton Hills State Park for spectacular views. The hotel was right on the water, and everyone was treated to gorgeous views from their rooms. Highlights of the trip were Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain. Some members visited Northeast Harbor which was less touristy than Bar Harbor. Many took the nature cruise from the hotel's dock. There were plenty of kibbles and bits and wine for all. Monday, groups split up and went separate ways; some stopping at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut while others visited relatives before heading home. A great time was had by all. -4-

16 Attention Club Members: If you are planning on attending the Hot Dog Run on Saturday, August 11, here are the instructions to evaluate the hotdogs, followed by an evaluation graphic organizer in which you can record your scores. Have fun! CE Classic Hot Dog Run - Taste Evaluation What is a hot dog? A hot dog (also spelled hotdog), a.k.a. frankfurter (sometimes shortened to frank), dog, or wiener, is a cooked sausage, traditionally grilled or steamed and served in a partially sliced bun. Where did the name hot dog come from? References to dachshund sausages and ultimately hot dogs can be traced to German immigrants in the 1800s. These immigrants brought not only sausages to America, but dachshund dogs. The name most likely began as a joke about the Germans' small, long, thin dogs. The term dog has been used as a synonym for sausage with one thought being that it came from accusations that sausage makers used dog meat, starting in at least In the early 20th century, consumption of dog meat in Germany was common. The suspicion that sausages contained dog meat was "occasionally justified". Our Hot Dog Evaluation Focuses on just the dog no sauces, no toppings, no buns. According to Al Quigley, there will be no eating of hot dogs in Corvettes! You will evaluate each dog based on the criteria shown below. Consider each characteristic and decide how you feel about the dog. Rate each characteristic with a number 1 to 5 (1 worst, 5 best). For the last characteristic, rate your general impression of the hot dog with a number 1 to 10 (1 worst, 10 best). Your overall rating for each dog will be the sum of the individual scores + your general impression score (i.e., a max score of 50) Overall ratings from all participants will be totaled to identify CE s Top Dog at the last hot dog stop. Evaluation Criteria 1 Size - Short/Long, Plump/Thin 2 - Appearance - Color (yellow, orange, red, brown), Casing vs. Skinless 3 Texture - Smooth, Wrinkly, Striated whole or split 4 - Plumpness Hard, Flexible, Popness 5 Aroma Harsh, Pleasant (invites tasting) 6 - Juiciness - Greasy, Moist, Dry 7 Chewiness - Loose, Tight 8 - Taste (flavor) Fresh, Stale, Meaty, Spicy, Salty 9 General Impression - 1 (Liked the Least). 10 (Liked the Most) -16-

17 CE Hot Dog Evaluation Form Score Each Box: General Impression: 1 (like least) 5 (like most) 1 (hate it) 10 (love it, the best) Max Score: 50 Hot Dog 1 Hot Dog 2 Hot Dog 3 Hot Dog 4 Hot Dog 5 Hot Dog 6 Size Appearance Texture Plumpness Aroma Juiciness Chewiness Taste General Impression Total Score -17-
