1 DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT New Mexico State Fair Commission Minutes Of the Regular Commission Meeting Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Expo New Mexico African American Pavilion 300 San Pedro Dr. NE Albuquerque, NM :00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Call to Order by Chairman Kennedy at approximately 11:06 a.m. Commission Roll Call: Commissioners present: Chairman, Larry Kennedy Commissioner William Bill Lee Commissioner Ruth Bitsui Commissioners not present: Commissioner Sanchez Commissioner Jurado Pledge of Allegiance: led by Chairman Kennedy Staff Present: Ken Salazar, Deputy Director Bill Nordin, Chief Financial Officer Joseph Holloway, General Counsel Oona Gonzales, Marketing Manager Introduction of Guests: Wyndham Kemsley, NMSF PIO Chris Bellantoni, Social Media Manager Action Item: Approval of Agenda Commissioner Lee made a motion for approval of the agenda. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bitsui. Chairman Kennedy asked if all were in favor of the agenda, and all voted in the affirmative. Action Item: Approval of Minutes of April 11, 2018 Regular Meeting Commissioner Lee made a motion for approval of the minutes from the April 11, 2018 regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bitsui. Chairman Kennedy asked if all were in favor of the minutes, and all voted in the affirmative. Public Comment None at this time

2 Chairman s Agenda: A. Committee Reports 1. Racing Committee Report: Mr. Mourning stated that the Racing season had begun and it has been a great success. He also stated that there was much success with night racing and pari-mutuel betting. Mr. Mourning added that the success of the Racing season has been due to the support and hard work of the New Mexico State Fair Commission. Mr. Mourning added that the repairs to the grandstand s back staircase have been made which will enhance that entrance. Mr. Mourning is excited for the New Mexico State Fair Horse meet beginning the first week of the 2018 Fair. 2. Arena Committee Report: Commissioner Lee did not have a report at this time but asked if Mr. Mourning had any information that he would like to share. Mr. Mourning stated that the updated Arena project report will be made available in the near future to the commissioners for review and he looks forward to getting their feedback. Mr. Mourning added that the input from the community has been very favorable. 3. Committee Suggestions: None at this time. State Fair Management Report A State Fair: Dan Mourning began his report by stating that staff is ahead of schedule with regard to scheduling concerts and other activities that will be taking place during the 2018 New Mexico State Fair. Mr. Mourning added that all concerts have been booked, with over $100, dollars in sales generated from concerts alone so far. Mr. Mourning also stated that ticket sales, such as Groupon sales, have crossed the $15, dollar mark as of today. Mr. Mourning went on to say that this is the 80th Anniversary of the New Mexico State Fair. Mr. Mourning then introduced the theme of the 2018 NM State Fair, Love is in the Fair. Mr. Mourning added that this theme reflects what the Fair is all about, being inclusive and building memories with family. Mr. Mourning made the commissioners aware that the 2017 New Mexico State Fair was awarded the Merrill Award for the creation and implementation of the Sensory Station, which gives those with sensory sensitivities a place to recuperate from overstimulation. Mr. Mourning noted that more planning and coordination has gone into making the Sensory Station even better and more inclusive for the upcoming 2018 New Mexico State Fair. Mr. Mourning added that this project helps the Fair meet the goal of being a part of our community. Mr. Mourning added that the Fair is more than corndogs and concerts, and the staff of the New Mexico State Fair work very hard to represent all that is good in the state of New Mexico. Mr. Mourning then discussed inclusion of the LGBTQ community in the Fair. This year, the Fair will host a full day Out at the Fair event, which will be held Sunday, September 9, 2018 in Villa Hispana. This event is meant to celebrate our community and promote a welcoming environment to all.

3 Mr. Mourning continued his report with a review of some events that will be featured at the Fair this year: Rodeo This year the Fair has a new stock contractor. Dustin Murray, General Manager of High Lo Pro Rodeo will bring new, and exciting stock for the 2018 New Mexico State Fair PRCA Rodeo. Also, Whiplash the Monkey will be coming back this year to entertain the Rodeo crowds. Concert Lineup The 2018 New Mexico State Fair concert line-up : Friday, September, 7 - DNCE Saturday, September, 8 Dustin Lynch Wednesday, September, 12 Dan + Shay Thursday, September, 13 Hotel California Friday September, 14 Maddie & Tae with High Valley Saturday, September, 15 Collective Soul with Special Guest Cordova Navy Week To help celebrate Navy Week, The Navy Funk Band will play throughout the Fair at various stages and will be a part of our annual New Mexico State Fair Parade. Midway There are two new rides provided by Reithhoffer Shows for the 2018 New Mexico State Fair. 1. The first ride is the Ski lift Sky Ride which features a birds-eye view of the fairgrounds, 40 feet up above Main Street from the Mattress Firm Pavilion to the Palomino Barns. 2. The second ride is the Euro Slide. This is an eight story high slide that features eight lanes. This slide is one of the largest, tallest portable slides in the country. State Fair Beer The New Mexico State Fair will celebrate the Fair s 80 th anniversary with the new state fair IPA beer from Marble Brewery. The state fair beer will be available at stores statewide on July 15, Marketing and Advertising The New Mexico State Fair and EXPO NM websites have been redesigned and will be continually updated to promote the upcoming 2018 New Mexico State Fair and year round events at Expo NM. Bus wraps promoting the upcoming 2018 New Mexico State Fair and the year round Flea Market have been on City buses throughout Albuquerque since March. FFA and 4-H During the next couple of months, Marketing Manager, Oona Gonzales will film promotional videos around the state which feature New Mexican kids who are invested in 4-H and FFA programs. The videos will highlight how these programs have impacted their lives in a positive way. These videos will be posted on the New Mexico State Fair website. Shane Hall has been hired to coordinate the annual Junior Livestock Sale. Mr. Shane Hall was the auctioneer at the 2017 Junior Livestock Sale. Mr. Mourning stated that he is very excited about this partnership.

4 Sponsorship The sponsorship department has been working with existing sponsors and with new sponsors, creating new sponsorship opportunities. Mr. Mourning stated that there is a benefit to having both local and national sponsors to partner with the New Mexico State Fair. Some of the sponsors for the upcoming 2018 New Mexico State Fair include: Cabela s Floor and Décor United Rentals Big R Stores Harley Davidson Motorcycles Indian Motorcycles Sandia National Labs Mercedes Benz Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Chevrolet Mobile App Aloompa has been contracted to develop the 2018 New Mexico State Fair mobile App. The new mobile App will be more user friendly and will focus on millennial interaction and appeal. Park and Ride Partnership The New Mexico State Fair will work in partnership with the City of Albuquerque to provide Park and Ride service from Coronado Mall each Saturday and Sunday of the 2018 Annual event. EXPO NM Report Mr. Mourning stated that Expo NM continues to be busy throughout the year with exciting new events coming to grounds and some of our favorite events returning even bigger and better. Mr. Mourning stated that Villa Hispana has become a favorite outdoor venue for small events among concert promoters and added that Live Nation has complimented the venue and EXPO NM staff for their professionalism. Some of the concerts held in Villa Hispana include: o Ziggy Marley concert in June 2018 o Dirty Heads concert in June 2018 o Slightly Stoopid will be coming on August 2, 2018 Mr. Mourning added that there will be concerts coming to Tingley Coliseum as well. Panic! At the Disco promoted by AEG will be held in Tingley Coliseum in February Mr. Mourning continued his report by adding that the Chinese Lantern Festival will be returning to Expo NM in October 2018, this is the second year for this event and they have extended their event to December 3, The 2018 Gathering of Nations held at Expo NM in April, was a major success. Mr. Mourning added that 2018 was the second year for this event as well. Expo NM will be working with the City of Albuquerque to expand it even more for the 2019 Gathering of Nations.

5 Mr. Mourning opened up the floor for questions and comments. Commissioner Bitsui congratulated Mr. Mourning on the New Mexico State Fair receiving the Merrill Award, and complimented the Sensory Station and its implementation into the Fair. Mr. Mourning thanked Commissioner Bitsui for her kind words. Commissioner Bitsui also complimented the overall management and appearance of the Fair and Fairgrounds. Mr. Mourning thanked Commissioner Bitsui, and noted that the key to the Fair s success was its ability to hire the right people. Chairman Kennedy noted that during his visit to 2018 Gathering of Nations, he noticed how busy the event was, and added that he thought the location of the event, EXPO NM, was the perfect place to host this event. Chairman Kennedy stated that he appreciated the coordination involved with hosting such a large and busy event. Mr. Mourning thanked Chairman Kennedy, and added that he would like to thank the staff for all of their hard work to make this and other events a success. Chairman Kennedy added that the Park and Ride program will have a huge impact on attendance and revenue for the Fair. Commissioner Lee asked if UBER will be back again for this Fair. Mr. Mourning stated that the drop off area that was designated for UBER last Fair will now include the other ride share companies as well. Discussion of Meeting Calendar: Chairman Kennedy suggested that the next meeting of the New Mexico State Fair Commission be held during the third week in October, and asked that Oona Gonzales coordinate the next meeting date. Discussion of agenda items for next meeting: Chairman Kennedy stated that if the commissioners had any agenda items that they would like to address at the next commission meeting to please let him know. Adjournment: Chairman Kennedy called for a motion to adjourn. Commissioner Bitsui made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by Commissioner Lee with all present voting in favor. Meeting adjourned at approximately 11:54 p.m.
