The meeting was well attended with one of the hot topics being the Formula car grouping. If you have missed the discussions there appears to be discontent among the FV, FF, F450 and F500 drivers about being grouped with the SREN & SRF cars. They main concern is that due to the size difference between the classes and the lack of direct rearward visibility of the Sports Racers, that the smaller Formula cars are not seen and thus put in jeopardy when overtaking a Sports Racer. The discussions were centered on the many suggestions and proposals that have been discussed among the racers, i.e.; make a separate race group for the Sports Racers, put all of the open wheel cars in one race group, put the Sports Racers in the Small Production race group, etc. No consensus was reached and as our club Stewarts, John Boldt and Gary Weis, pointed out, there are many factors besides relative size that has to be taken into consideration when setting up race groups such as relative speeds, relative car weights, race group sizes, etc. The Stewarts evaluate all of these factors on a continuous basis with safety always the major consideration. This will probably be an on going topic for discussion for the balance of the season. 2- Since North Sub is the sponsoring club for the Road America race in September help is needed for some of the specialty function in addition the race functions of Grid and Corner. Volunteers are need on both Saturday and Sunday for handing out the trophies, for delivering water and snacks to the corners, for handing out lunch tickets for the workers, for handing out dinner tickets for the workers and for a couple of more tasks that I am sure our President Lynn has in mind. If you can help either day or even for a portion of the day please contact Lynn at leserra@msn.com. 3- The Big News the membership meeting is being moved from the first Thursday of the month to the third Thursday of the month. The meeting will start at 7:45 pm. A short Board of Directors meeting that will start at 7:00 pm will also precede it. It was felt that by holding both monthly meeting on the same evening and in the same location, it would give the membership a chance to attend the Board of Directors meeting as well as the Membership meeting if they so wished in order to see their valiant leaders in action. The membership meetings for the balance of the year will be held on September 20 th, October 16 th, November 15 th and December 20 th. The dates and location for the November and December meetings may be adjusted due to the Clubs annual awards banquet when a banquet date is set. The MC Stewards committee will meet on the Friday of the next On Track School; on the agenda is a review of the Licenses and Protests section of the GCR. MC has approved Western Canada Motorsports competition licenses for participation at MC W2W event. Rule-A-Thon will take place on August 25, at the base of the tower at BFR Ray Jackson will chair the event. It has been approved that Full Spec Miata cars can run in ITA. Approved. Due to medical reasons, Bill Millner must resign as W2W Chief of Grid. Michelle Merwin will be available to fill in at some, but not all events. There has been at least one MayDay occurrence at every event so far this season in many causing substantial damage to race facilities (armco, barriers, turf, etc.) It was suggested some of these costs may be passed on to the drivers involved. Lynn Serra will investigate track facilities insurance. Please Note: The COMPLETE minutes from this MC Board Meeting are available on the MC web site: (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 2) Rod Knock David LeGare Lynn Serra appointed the following members to write articles for the June Rod Knock Dave Wilbert for Vintage; Bill Marquardt for High Speed Autocross. Matt Lagessie will (as usual) contribute an article. General Membership Meeting Dave Bralich The July meeting will be held at Ritzy s Cafe & Backerei, 2765 Algonquin Rd., Rolling Meadows. Membership Report Lynn Waldman To date we have 215 Full members and 15 Associate members Awards Banquet No Report tabled for further input Autobahn Country Club NSSCC June 07 Event Lynn Serra The car count for both HSA and W2W was lower than expected but we did come in under budget. Even after paying ACC for guardrail damage we should be OK financially. There was lots of discussion on how to avoid these charges in the future. There was a motion (M&2) to just pay $ to ACC to settle the guardrail issue only upon a written receipt from ACC that this is acceptable to them. Road America The R.A. committee will meet soon but it s evident we will (as always) be needing as many volunteer staff workers as possible! By-Laws of NSSCC tabled for further discussion NEW BUSINESS Lynn Serra mentioned we still need an heirapparent for the Treasurer position as Frank Skweres would like to relinquish those duties soon. Someone with an accounting/banking background would be ideal. We also need to establish a Budget Committee for all NSSCC expenses not just race planning. Matt Lagessie s Corvair will be featured in the Darien IL Fourth of July parade! Lynn Serra read an from the BMW owner who wrecked at ACC. The message indicated he felt it was his fault; but he still had a great time and will be available to work race staff for the balance of this season and he will re-join us in 2008 as an active HSA participant. Jeremie Toma mentioned he needs security access to the NSSCC web site to continue construction" on the site. Jeremie and Frank Skweres will confer. John Boldt asked if Jeremie can clean up the electronic version of the NSSCC logo. It looks somewhat ragged around the edges. Lynn Serra mentioned our Club is now listed on a web site called volunteermatch.com. We may be able to solicit and recruit corner workers through that venue 9:15pm - M&2 to adjourn. Minutes taken and transcribed by John Churchill, Secretary NSSCC NSSCC Board Meeting Minutes July 26, 2007 In Attendance: John Boldt, Dave Bralich, John Churchill, Robert Dudek, Ray Kollock, Matt Lagessie, Al Lynch, Bill Marquardt, Bill Minor, Kelvin Palmer, Joe Porcelli, John Saccameno, Lynn Serra, Frank Skweres, Gary Weis 7:15pm - Called to Order Lynn Serra Minutes from the June 18, 2007 meeting were (M&2) Approved. Treasurer s Report Frank Skweres A relatively quiet month in terms of cash in / cash out. All invoices from the Autobahn event have been paid and finalized. Treasurer s Report (M&2 ) Approved. Steward s Report John Boldt (Following is highlights from the July 12, 2007 Midwestern Council Board Meeting) Midwestern Council is comprised of 8 member Clubs totaling 965 members. Clubs are reminded that all Entry forms must include a place for designation of MC 50 th Anniversary donations. Rule- A-Thon will be held on August 25 th at BFR at the base of the tower. The committee will need at least 10 copies of any recommendations. Members need to contact committee chairs first if they are (Continued on page 4) Page: 3

(Continued from page 3) planning on introducing any recommendations. AX portion is at 10:00am and W2W in the afternoon. Track damage insurance/liability: Tracks have been charging clubs for damages incurred at events, whereas in the past damages were generally part of the cost of doing business for the tracks. MC has the self-insurance fund, which was gathered by increasing sanction fees per event until the total reached $5000. Clubs can draw on this fund for damages. The fund is no longer being increased. Clubs must bring such bills to the Board, but should still negotiate with facilities to get the cost down as much as possible first. Clubs are not required to submit bills. This fund seems to be a better idea than purchasing extra insurance for such occurrences. Other sanctioning bodies mention in their supps that drivers may be held liable for damages; this may make drivers think twice about risky actions on the track. M(AX Committee) & 2(Cassaro) to approve Bill Minor of NSSCC for AX Instructor certification. Pass. Please Note: The COMPLETE minutes from this MC Board Meeting are available on the MC web site: mcscc.org Rod Knock Ray Kollock July Rod Knock is now in the mail. We will need articles for the August issue to be mailed to the Editor by August 5. John Churchill was asked to provide an article detailing his experience as the Lead HSA Instructor for the July MC On Track School. Ray passed a listing showing comparisons of Advertising rates for our R.K. / Chicago SCCA / MC Klaxon. There was a lot of discussion as to what rates we should charge for various size ads in the Rod Knock. Conclusion: It was suggested (M&2) to adopt these rates as published by Ray Kollock. Approved. Basically, we need revenue of about $80.00 per page to cover printing/mailing costs. General Memberhip Meeting Dave Bralich For the next 2 months (August & September) the General Membership meetings will be held at Ritzy s Cafe & Backerei, 2765 Algonquin Rd., Rolling Meadows. Awards Banquet 2007 tabled for further discussion Autobahn Country Club June Event Lynn Serra Lynn reports the final bill for Armco damage was approximately $ considerably less than Page: 4 previous estimates. The final accounting for this event reveals the Club did realize a profit. Please contact Frank Skweres for specifics. Road America Events, September 07 Lynn Serra Lynn reports budgeting and sponsor solicitation is well underway. British Car Show Dave Bralich Dave passed out promotional brochures for this event in which NSSCC will participate. British Car Festival will be held on September 9, 2007 from 9:00am 3:00pm at Moraine Valley Community College, Palos Hills, Il. Go to www. britishcarunion.com for more details. NSSCC Web Site Lynn Serra Lynn reports that Jeremie Toma (our webmaster) would like a To Do List (very specific suggestions) for improvements / changes to our web site. Suggest members first review the site and then suggestions to jeremie.toma@sbcglobal.net with copies to leserra@msn.com and Matt@maddmattsauto.com. NEW BUSINESS There was a lot of discussion about when & where NSSCC Board meeting should be held. There was a consensus that since the General Membership meetings have produced a relatively light turn-out, we should combine Board & General Membership meetings at the same time and same place (preferably a commercial establishment) every month. Hopefully, a consistent meeting time and place would (over time) result in more Club Member participation. There was a Motion (M&2) that beginning in September, NSSCC Board and General Membership meetings will be combined and held on the 3 rd Thursday of the month at Ritzy s Cafe & Backerei, 2765 Algonquin Rd., Rolling Meadows, IL. Approved. The meetings will be scheduled as follows: NSSCC Board Meetings at 7:00pm / General Membership meetings to follow at approximately 7:45pm. There was a motion (M&2) that (based on the newly-discovered MC Track Damage Self- Insurance Fund) we submit copies of our paid invoices for track damage for the past 3 years to Midwestern Council for reimbursement. The motion carries the comment: We should do what is (Continued on page 5)

(Continued from page 4) best for our Club and accept whatever MC agrees to give us. Approved. Gary Weis reminded everyone to come to next month s meeting with recommendations for the NSSCC Annual Special Awards. There was also a suggestion to make the Awards Banquet more of a social event and just present the Special Awards at the Banquet. Class Champion awards could be done at a season-end General Membership meeting. Al Lynch was asked (and agreed) to be on the NSSCC Budget Committee more to follow. 8:55pm - M&2 to adjourn. Minutes taken and transcribed by John Churchill, Secretary NSSCC IT S A BIRD, IT S A PLANE, IT S.. - President Lynn Serra It started out like any other Sunday morning at Blackhawk Farms Raceway. The weather was warm with no rain in sight. The drivers were milling about the paddock without any idea that a page in the history book of Midwestern Council was about to be written. Students from the drivers school the day before were still in the honeymoon faze of racing thinking that the worst was over and that nothing that day would surprise them. Now let me set the stage for the event. Safety and Rescue was well staffed that day. Gregg Heineman was there roving the paddock area in his pimpmobile looking for drivers to assist and just generally trying to be proactive in his approach to Safety. Two events prior, Gregg had been sent out to the main straight to remove a rather large turtle.three times! And being the proactive guy he is, Gregg brought a big shovel with him to the track this time just in case. Annie Pobgee and I were the yellow truck stationed near T5 plotting ways to make fun of Gregg e.g. putting Ninja Turtles stickers all over his vehicle. Dan Pobgee was stationed in the compound near the base of the bridge. Dan began to refer to Gregg not as rover which was the norm, but as Turtle One. (By the way, Safety was on their own radio frequency that day.) Just about that time Gregg had wandered over near T6 to watch the action from there. Group 4 had just completed their qualifying session when the following transmissions were heard over the radios: Gregg: You guys aren t going to believe this. Corner 6A: Control there is some kind of bird on the grass proceeding towards 7; maybe 7 can help identify it. Control: What have you got 7? Checkered Past Corner 7: No, it's a biiiigggg bird, looks kind of like an ostrich. Control: A what! Rescue Chief can you send someone to look at this and advise? Rescue Chief: Rover can you go out at 6A and take a look. Gregg: They are right it is a big bird! Rescue Chief: Can you herd it to the outside? Gregg: I'm not sure I want to get out of the truck; this bird is taller than me! (Gregg only stands about 5' 5" or 6") Rescue Chief: OK everybody proceed to 7 and let's see if we can't capture it. So Annie and I proceed towards T7 on track. We catch up to the big bird at the kink before the corner. I jump out and move towards the bird. Keith Von Kampen has now arrived on the back of the wrecker and says keep your hands up. So I m out there playing line backer while everyone else figures out what to do. Kari Drogosz is Safety s control for the day, so she stayed behind in the tower. I keep hearing her say, You have to put something over its head. Don t scare it. Corner 7: It's a big bird walking towards us. Control: A turkey or a pheasant? (Continued on page 6) Page: 5

with him to the next event.) Keith, Chris DeServi with his 4-wheeler, Dan, David Osbourne (Ozzy), John Lewis, Mat Cutter, Tom, and Jim (the new guy) went in after the Emu. Gregg s knees were knocking as the others went in. Grass rustled, bushes shook. But no other sound was heard as a hush had come over the area so as not to scare our prey further into the high weeds. The next words I Tom from Security arrived and lets us know this bird is in fact an Emu a refugee from a farm not far from the track. Evidently the Emu had escaped and made its way to the track to watch the activities on Friday. The owner was called and came to retrieve the bird, however it had taken cover and could not be found. Evidently, Saturday was not as interesting for our feathered friend, as he was not spotted during the school. But wheel-to-wheel racing brought him back out. (I m thinking Emus like the large formula cars as it showed up just before their qualifying session.) Tom had a rope, however he decided it was not going to be used to lasso the bird. After several minutes of me doing the Emu dance at T7 and there being no plan in place to bag this bird, it took off across track into the high weeds. Just when I thought the adventure was over it was decided that the bird had to be caught before starting the next session. I think that was the right call as this bird was taller than any car in group 5; when he was standing up straight he was looking me straight in the eye. No wonder Gregg was scared, the bird was in fact bigger than he. (Gee, I wonder what garden tool Gregg will bring Page: 6

The rest of the day was business as usual with Gregg hiding, I mean roving. That is until the Big Bore race. Dan Nicotera took black tape and put FREE THE OSTRICH NOW on his right rear quarter panel. I don t know if he set any track records that day, but he was flyin. Which is evidently why I didn t get a clear picture of his car, darn it! Wow, I guess Gregg actually did touch the bird! Oh right, the head was still bagged and the feet were still tied at that point. The Ultimate Driving Experience - Eric Scott, HSAX Member June 9th 2007, was a beautiful day with great weather in the mid 70's. Immediately following my first timed lap on the ABCC North circuit, I crossed over the finish at full throttle, happy about a nice run with my BMW. However, without slowing down enough to prepare for Turns 1 and 2, I was quickly headed for trouble. It all seemed to be happening in calm slow motion - yet each passing moment became more and more complicated. The balance of the car remained offset after the first turn. Slowing the car down, it began to lean and slide to the right. The next reaction was to apply just enough acceleration to stabilize the balance and regain some traction. As I pressed the brakes once again, the back-end of the car swung out even farther. Sliding sideways between the 2 turns, I've never heard tires cry out so loud. At that point, counter steering to stay on the pavement didn't have much affect as I was soon skidding across the grass. For a brief second my tires stopped screeching, only the rush of the wind. The force of the impact was surprising, as the car popped up and tumbled upside down. Dan has now finished his ornithology class and has become the founding member of the Save the Emu Foundation. Please contact Dan to make donations. So the next time you hear the words Big Bird I ll bet you won t be thinking of a yellow cartoon character anymore! NSSCC Fortunately, my last NSSCC instructor demonstrated how to fasten the seat belt tightly. I credit this precaution that kept me planted in the seat. Thank goodness that no one else was involved and that I was completely unharmed! Although I'm very fortunate with the outcome, I dearly regret the entire mishap, and delaying the event. Thanks to everyone who assisted. (Continued on page 10) Page: 7

(Continued from page 7) That "Ultimate Driving Machine" was very special to me. As it turned out, the insurance policy excluded coverage for the accident. Considering the repair estimates, I sold it as is. My wife won't let me take her Honda out on the track but she completely understands my passion for driving. She enjoyed the BMW and watching the events too. We also miss our frequent "after dinner drives" together out on the country roads near our home. With all that happened that day, I've gained a new perspective of how precious all of our lives are. For me, "playing cars" is not just fast thrills and fine machinery it's about caring for people and things, striving to make the right decisions, learning from others, and arriving home safe at the end of a fun day.
