Ann has done a tremendous amount of research on the First US Auto race, that was also only the third world wide race held, which started just south of the present day Museum of Science and Industry and went up to Waukegan and back over a 54 mile course after many false starts and delays. The Cruise to the Rock was started by the Chicagoland MG Club in 1995 to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of the first race and has been held annually since then. It is held at the Rock which is the marker for the start of the race back in 1895 and is located in the park just south of the Museum of Science and Industry. The Cruise has (Continued on page 2)

The cars start showing up early Thanksgiving morning with everyone heading home for Thanksgiving dinner by noon. If you want to see a lot of interesting cars put the Cruise on your calendar for this coming Thanksgiving morning. For more information contact Ann at snyder@chicagolandmgclub.com. President Lynn Serra has asked that anyone that has any NSSCC property to please contact her so that an inventory can be taken and a list made up. Lynn can be contacted at Ph (815) or lynnellynserra@att.net. The March 20 th Members meeting will be held at the Ritzy s Café & Backerei as usual but there will not be a BOD meeting preceding it. The next BOD meeting will be held on April 17 th with the April Members meeting. 2- Membership just a reminder that it is time to renew your Membership for 2008 if you have not already done so. This will be the last issue of the Rod Knock that you will receive if you have not renewed for For those of you that have an Associate Members but have not been able to find the Associate Member renewal form we have printed a copy of it in this issue for your convenience. Membership renewals, and questions about membership, should be directed to: Lynn Waldman, NSSCC Membership, 253 Bradwell, Inverness, IL Ph (847) , nssccmembership@yahoo.com 3- Race and Performance Expo will be held on March 15 th and 16 th at the Pheasant Run Resort and Conference Center which is on North Avenue in St. Charles, IL Their web site is com/home.htm. Midwestern Council will have a booth in the show and have two NSSCC W2W cars on display. This is the first annual show of this type in the Chicagoland area and promises to become as major of a racing show as it has in other cities around the country. The timing of the show is opportune for us to tell people about the NSSCC Indoor Racing School on March 29 th and to get new people interested in coming out to race with Council. If you can spend a day or only a part of a day helping out in the booth please contact Chuck Cassaro at (815) or Cassaro@insightbb.com and let him know when you can help. This is a great opportunity to help the club for a while and then see the show. 4- Indoor Racing School the 48 th annual NSSCC IRS is scheduled for Saturday March 29 th at the Autobahn Country Club. This is an opportunity for you to spend a Sat- (Continued on page 3) Page: 2

3 (Continued from page 2) urday at the Autobahn track, help the club out administer the event and then get some free time touring the track in order to either learn or update your knowledge of the track. Such a deal. If you have any friends or neighbors that you think would be interested in attending the school there is still time to register them. Last months Rod Knock contained a pull out flyer for the school, just get it, copy it, give it to them and then bring them to the school. Please contact Lynn Serra at Ph (815) or lynnellynserra@att.net and let her know that you can help. 5- Annual W2W Tech Inspection the first Council 2008 Annual Tech day will be held on April 12 th at the Advanced Autosports shop at 1928 Whipple Street, Beloit, WI, Ph (608) , com. The Tech inspection is free to Council members. Advanced Autosports has a show room and inventory of racing supplies such as current date belt sets and safety items for purchase if they are needed to pass inspection. 6- Blackhawk Tire Wall Day the annual re-build the Checkered Past A Niche of Racing I had not Been Exposed To tire wall day at Blackhawk will be on Saturday April 5 th. This is a good chance to come out to the track, see the new improvements, help the club update one of the most vital safety items at the track and to see your fellow club members. 7- Something New with this issue we will start to take advantage of the Rod Knock being available on the web site by posting an additional article as an addendum to the printed Rod Knock on the web site. The article is a must read racing oil durability test that was conducted by a racing publication, the Street Commodores www. streetcommodores.com, from the land of OZ Down Under. Racing is very big in Australia and their test, which was run using test equipment very similar to the Timken test equipment and procedure, is very interesting with surprising results. Go to the on line version of the March 2008 Rod Knock and download the tests.pdf file. Finally, with the first race less than seven weeks away, it is vitally important that we all start having good thoughts so that the snow is gone by that time. See you at the Racing Show and the Indoor Racing School. Joe NSSCC Larry and Ross discuss show strategy behind a Formula Continental in the booth Larry Best and Ross Fosbender standing with a Miata from Dave Wheeler s stable. - President Lynn Serra Thanks to Larry Best of Chicagoland Sports Car Club, some of us North Suburbanites (Is that a word?) were able to spend last weekend surrounded by karting experts. Larry made a successful motion at a recent Midwestern Council Board of Directors meeting and shot some of us right into the thick of things in karting. Although my arches, and those of Ray Kollock, Larry Noble, Dave Bralich, and Ross Fosbender, may be flat from Ray gets em young to train em right. (Continued on page 4) Page: 3

4 (Continued from page 3) standing all day, I feel the short and long-term rewards for MC will far outweigh the discomfort. I spoke to dozens of people who were exhibitors or attendees of the show. They all said the same things: 1) The number of competitors was down last season; 2) Once these kids reach 14 years old they have to make a decision of what they want to do in racing because there is nowhere else to go in karting!; and 3) That they have never heard of Midwestern Council. I met one gal who was 14 years old and her dad. She was a multi-year champion in endure sit up type karts and had won Daytona just this year. She had been sought out by a NASCAR sub-series, however was not sure that was right for her. She found one of Bruce Weatherston s Formula Continentals very appealing. Everyone in our booth knew exactly where all these karters would be welcome in the future. Ray was the consummate professional MC representative throughout the Vic Holman with Lynn Serra and Bruce Weatherston weekend. After competing in 38 Miata events without a single DNF last year, Ray had a lot of wisdom to impart on the visitors to the booth. By the way, being two days after the show, I have already received three inquiries about our Indoor Racing School from attendees to the show and expect to have many more. There was also at least one celebrity at the show. Vic Holman owner of Bowman Karts supplies all the karts to Chicago Indoor Racing. He also was the inventor/builder of the Performance Racing Series (PRS) Formula Ford and the Hawk Formula Ford. I was fortunate enough to talk to Vic for a long time on Sunday. And boy does he ever have the stories to tell, including one about Mario Andretti calling him anxious to buy a new PRS. Now I am always saying that Mario has called me to meet him for dinner, however Vic is actually telling the truth. In March Midwestern Council will be having a booth at the Race & Performance Show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles. I am looking forward to sore feet and another great success for us. NSSCC NSSCC Board Meeting Minutes February 21, 2008 Ritzy s Cafe Rolling Meadows, IL Board Members In Attendance: Dave Bralich, John Churchill, Robert Dudek, Scott Durbin, Ray Kollock, Matt Lagessie, David Legare, Bill Marquardt, Rudy Mazzeo, Bill Minor, Kelvin Palmer, John Saccameno, Lynn Serra, John Wheeler 7:00pm - Called to Order Lynn Serra There was a Motion (Minor) & (2 nd Marquardt) to approve the minutes from the January 17, 2008 meeting. Passed. Treasurer s Report Scott Durbin Scott reports a small Year-To-Date deficit due to current expenses exceeding revenue. 5 (Continued from page 4) There was a Motion (Churchill) & (2nd Marquardt) to approve the Treasurer s Report. Passed. Steward s Report John Saccameno (Following is highlights from the February 14, 2008 Midwestern Council Board Meeting) The MC budget for 2008 looks good. Chuck Cassaro reports the MC web site revision is nearing completion and should be up and running soon. The raffle conducted at the MC banquet produced $2000 in revenue which will be used toward upgrading the MC Timing & Scoring equipment. The new owner of Raceway (BFR) has said track rental fees will be increased (nominal) for The MC race Staff party will be held on Saturday, March 8 at Double Day s in Cottage Grove, WI. MC is participating in and will have an exhibition booth at the Race & Performance Expo on March 15 & 16 at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. There will be 2 NSSCC Member race cars on display belonging to Ray Kollock and Rudy Mazzeo. A new amateur racing facility is under construction called Eagles Canyon in the Dallas TX area. The owners have contacted MC for information on how they can attract club racers to their new facility. There was a Motion to appropriate approximately $ for upgrading Timing & Scoring equipment. The motion was tabled for further discussion, but likely will be passed at the next MC Board meeting. Note: The COMPLETE minutes from this MC Board meeting are available on the MC website: Rod Knock David Legare / RayKollock The newly selected Broken Rod masthead will appear for the first time on the next issue of the Rod Knock. As always, we need more people to submit articles. NSSCC Tri-Fold Brochure Frank Skweres It was suggested at the last meeting to re-print the brochure to make it useable from year to year. Removing the current year race schedule and making appropriate changes would give the brochure a longer, useful life. Frank and John Churchill presented revisions which were approved by the Board. Frank also had a copy of the new brochure from CSCC which is done in 4-color printing. The NSSCC brochure has been done in 2-color printing for the last few years. Frank will obtain quotes in both 2-color & 4-color on which the Executive Board Members (only) will vote. We ll need the new brochures in time for the Indoor School and (if possible) in time for the Race & Performance Expo on March 15 & 16. Membership Scott Durbin (for Lynn Waldman) Scott reports 107 NSSCC Members to date for General Membership Meetings Dave Bralich Dave reminds everyone there will not be a NSSCC Board meeting next month due to preparations for the Indoor School. However, there WILL be a March General Membership meeting as usual on the 3 rd Thursday of the month (March 20) beginning at about 7:30pm at Ritzy s Café on Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows. Mentor Program Matt Lagessie Matt reports a couple of people who are already signed up for the Indoor School have contacted him for information. Also, Matt has sent s to all those registered so far offering his services and time to answer any questions. NSCCC Web Site Jeremie Toma (No Report) 2008 Indoor Racing School (Churchill, Durbin, Saccameno, Serra) John Churchill reports copies of the IRS flyer have been faxed to several newspaper, radio & TV stations (Northern Illinois / Southern Wisconsin) asking them to promote our Free School. Bill Marquardt reports he will make contact with the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and Daily Herald to ensure the school is mentioned in those publications. Lynn Serra mentioned (again) we need help from our Members for Registration, Set-Up, Technical GCR Assistance, etc. Ray Kollock brought a quantity of the newly printed IRS flyers to the meeting. John Churchill asked all those present to take some and to please help us in publicizing this event. John encouraged members to take a Saturday afternoon and pass the flyers out at auto dealership service departments, repair shops and auto parts stores. We need everyone s help in publicizing this important Club event! Club By-Laws Lynn Serra In order to begin working on new revised By- Laws, Lynn needs a copy of the current ones. Dave Bralich has them and will get them to Lynn so she can work on this project. Race & Performance Expo Lynn Serra Midwestern Council has taken a 10 x 30 booth at the Race & Performance Expo to be held March 15 & 16 at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. NSSCC Board Members Ray Kollock and Rudy Mazzeo will have their race cars on display. MC President, Chuck Cassaro will allow (Continued on page 6) Page: 5

6 (Continued from page 5) NSSCC to promote our Indoor School at this event in exchange for help in staffing it. For more info go to com. NEW BUSINESS Lynn Serra asked for a voice vote on whether NSSCC should vote Yes or No at the next MC Board meeting on the topic of the proposed purchase of new and updated Timing & Scoring equipment. The voice vote was a resounding YES! Lynn also mentioned we are in need of a volunteer (s) to do W2W Registration at our June 7, 8 event at ACC North. Ray Kollock will handle HSAX registration, but need a W2W Registrar who would have to be at the track from about 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, and about 7:00 10:00am on Sunday. Lynn also asked all members to let her know what current NSSCC gear you may have. Specifically, extra trophies, pens, logo stickers, whatever unused NSSCC paraphenalia may be around. We need to take inventory and see what we have. Please contact Lynn Serra. Matt Lagessie presented a framed history of NSSCC to the Club Board. The frame contains old logos, rule books and photos which Matt feels should be preserved for posterity. Matt invested $ to have this done. A vote was taken to reimburse Matt for the expense upon presenting a receipt to the Treasurer. Kelvin Palmer suggested we consider an Archive section be added to the NSSCC web site. It would contain useful information and reference material of interest to our members. For example a highly detailed 10-page article (currently available) on comparisons of several different types of motor oil done by an Austrailian company. More to follow on this subject. John Churchill will research costs and obtain quotes on a new NSSCC logo banner to be used at the IRS and other events. 8:00pm: There was a Motion (Saccameno) & (2 nd Dudek) to adjourn. 7 RACE CAR INTERIORS - Vice President Matt Lagessie FLAT BLACK, THIS IS WHAT YOUR DASH SHOULD BE! IT WILL KEEP THE GLARE DOWN AND KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON EVERYTHING OUTSIDE THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. TRUST ME YOU WON'T EVEN SEE THE 'A' PILLARS IF THEY ARE PAINTED FLAT BLACK. JUST ANOTHER SPEED TIDBIT FROM YOUR VICE, MADD- MATT. NSSCC Sorry about how dark the picture is. I would lighten it up, but Matt says that that s how it s supposed to be. - Editor Autobahn Track Update - Autobahn Country Club News Release Autobahn Country Club is always looking for ways to improve our facilities. The feedback we get from all the racers has been informative and we would like to offer an update to the ongoing improvements. A number of things have already been completed and others are to be started in the spring. We would invite you to pass this information along to all your participants as they begin to plan for the 2008 racing season. Completed Projects -Track Surface Experts from across the country have been consulted and work is being performed based on their recommendations. Surface grinding has been performed in several more areas to eliminate some of the bumps. These areas include both the north and south front straights and the entry to corner 5 on the south track. Light patch work has been performed to provide a smoother surface without affecting the overall grip at north 5 and 6 as well as corners 6 and 11 on the south track. -Safety Student/Instructor Communications - Jack Murphy, Instructee at Large In order to provide a little perspective on why you're about to waste the next three minutes or so of your life, I've been asked to write an article about intercoms and their usage in the helmets of autocross instructors and students. Just to set the record straight, we need to understand a few things. First, I'm a new member. Second, I'm a lousy drive (ask my wife.) Third, I don't know anything about cars (I've got a beat up old 911 turbo and a semi beat up old Boxster and every time I get in it takes me around 5 minutes to figure out you put the key in the ignition on the left side.) Fourth, I know absolutely nothing about electronics or communication equipment (I once was able to make a partially successful cell phone call thanks to the guidance of my grandchildren.) Tire walls have been added or expanded at several places including corners 3 and 6 on the north track as well as turn 3 on the south track. -Drainage A new drainage system has been installed for portions of the south track to help alleviate the problem of water running across the track after a heavy rain, this should also help the track dry faster. Upcoming projects -Track Surface Grinding will continue where the worst bumps are located along with some patch work where needed. -Safety The expansion of the tire walls is an ongoing process. The next areas set for completion include north 8 as well as south 3, 6 and 11. -Paddock We will be paving the gravel Kart track paddock. We hope these improvements add to the experience of racing at Autobahn and we look forward to a great 2008 season. Autobahn Country Club NSSCC About now you're wondering what qualifies this son of a %$#@* to write an article for "Rod Knock." I was wondering the same damn thing: Then it dawned on me. You see, the weather the night of the NSSCC, December board meeting was just awful, not to mention that it was only five days before Christmas. Well, as you might imagine, attendance was little thin and our illustrious President was limited in her choice of members to have "volunteer" to write an article. Come to think of it, I was it. Anyway, that and the fact that I'm a pro-instructee probably "qualified" me. Oh, I'm guessing you don't know what a "pro"-instructee" is since I just made it up. We all know what an instructor is. That's the one imparting all that knowledge to a student who's the one listening, absorbing (Continued on page 8) Page: 7

8 (Continued from page 7) and learning. There are different levels of students. Some are really good (W2W want-a-bees,) some are pretty good (I think I could go faster than Fosbender's Toyota Camry if they'd just let me out of this conga line,) some are not so good (eventually getting to pass in more than just one straight,) and some just don't even deserve to be called a student at all. These are instructees. Now, to be a "pro"instructee you have to have been at this for as long as I have and have had as many instructors hide every time you pull into a false grid. As a pro-instructee I've had as many instructors try to communicate with me as just about anyone on the planet. And, I can tell you from experience, hearing instructions is way overrated. If we're yelling back and forth, I always have an excuse. As an example, Ron Petrucci was my instructor once and as usual, I was trying to save wear and tear on my pointing-by arm and finger. Without an intercom, I could make Ron think I didn't hear him tell me a relatively long line of cars was forming behind me. This made it possible for me to get to the end of the straight without having to let anyone by. By the way, not only does this save arm exertion, but it keeps you from having to use the mirrors for another five or six corners. On another occasion without intercoms, Bill Marquardt was trying his luck with instructing me around Gingerman. This time, because of not being able to hear Bill give me the line, I was able to set a record for the driver coming closest to the only tree near the course. Many of you have probably never seen the tree as it is quite a ways from the track; however, should you ever want to brake my record, the best I can suggest is to early apex turn three, jerk the wheel for a save, and then stab the throttle real hard as the track drops away form you that little sucker ll spin like a top. By the way, if it s in the fall, even though it s against the rules, you might consider rolling up the windows before your record attempt as it takes about six to seven months to get the prairie grass out of the car. Speaking of the benefits of not being able to hear your instructor, I sometimes wish this extended to not being able to hear other track staff. As an example, I've even had Gary Weis in the car for instruction, albeit as steward rather than driving instructor. This one I really didn't want to hear. But, Gary went on anyway to explain why I should have pitted after seeing all those black flags. And all the time I thought they were ads for some kind of bug spray...go figure. Oh, about those intercoms. Even though, as a proinstructee, I don't believe in them, I figured I better do a little research. I looked 'em up on the new computer my wife got for Christmas and needless to say had about the same luck I did with that cell phone call. I don't have a clue about what the club should get. It's a good thing John Churchill is in charge of deciding between Nady and Chatter Box. Come to think of it, he's also the guy that drives a drag strip Camero on a road course. Well, we'll just have to hope for the best. Respectfully submitted, Jack Murphy, novice driver/pro-instructee NSSCC 2007 Midwestern Council Class Champions and award Winners Chris Deservi - Royal Order of the EMU Page: 8 Dave Lopina - Y Stock, HSAX John Saccameno - Vintage Driver of the Year

Due to a late vendor cancellatue Feb 26, :51 pm (PST) tion, we were able to expand our booth to include a second car (Bruce Weatherston' s Van Diemen FC) on very Hi Everyone, short notice. Certainly a thank you is in order to those Thank you Ross Fosbender for your encouragement to members that wanted to help with the 2nd car order, but take this project forward. In looking back at the roster, no due to snowed in trailers, cars disassembled, lack of tow less than 23 MC members rallied to make this 3-day vehicles, and a few other valid reasons, could not make it. 11 (Continued from page 10) few folks via with follow-up questions. With more than adequate staffing, many of us had the opportunity to walk the Expo floor and learn more about Karting today, and what the technology elements include. For some of us, our last contact with Karting came at the July, 1991 Midwestern Council "Motorsports Weekend" that included the MC W2W program, a Pro Sports 2 Litre race, Karts and Motorcycles, all on the same weekend. It's going to take a few days to distill the comments and observations from the weekend in order to assess the value of participating in an event like this in the future. I think that one of the key objectives of providing awareness about our MC Road Racing program was serviced. We handed out a number of Guest Passes to our 2008 MC events, and time will tell if those are redeemed for a closer look at our program. For a short-range measurement, Lynn Serra will monitor the Indoor Driver School participants to determine the interest level from the Kart Expo. We also provided more than 600 quad-fold brochures to attendees that covered basic information about the MC programs along with the 2008 event schedule. Our event co-sponsor, Prairie Hills attended the event on Saturday, providing us with brochures covering the future road rac- ing facility they are planning to build in Northwest Indiana. Mike Krupka and Bob Humphrey also participated in the several of the Conference sessions and met with other vendors to learn more about the opportunities in Karting. The Expo ended at 4:00 PM on Sunday evening. The MC army of ants was able to disassemble the booth and remove all of the material and the 2 racecars in under 30 minutes. Everyone was on their way home at 4:30 PM. Dave Wheeler was the only Expo participant that pushed his car outside, hit the starter, and motored off to his trailer, reinforcing the utility value of a Spec Miata. There's more! A subset of the MC Kart Expo team represented all of us at the "British Car Auto Jumble & Swap Meet" on Sunday (2/24/08) at the DuPage County Fair Grounds. Mike Schindlbeck, Walter Modelski, Ken Rochocki, Dave Bralich, and Rich Cwik joined Ron Petrucci at that event (in different booths), promoting the Indoor Driver School, and the MC programs.
