Ramblings 1-3 BOD Meeting 3-4 Some sort of Sign 4 MATT S BACK 4 Classifieds 5 Miscellaneous Ramblings - Joe Podsybochem 1- Membership Meeting Remember that it has been moved to the third Thursday of the month, this month on the 20 th, and will be held at the Ritzy s Café & Backerei, 2765 Algonquin Road, Rolling Meadows. The meeting will start at 7:45 pm and will be preceded by a Board of Directors meeting at 7:00 pm. All members are welcome to come early and sit in the BOD meeting. Ritzy s is a family style restaurant and has daily specials. 2- Racing also remember that North Suburban is the sponsoring club for the Crystal Tack Cloth Twin Challenge at Road America on Saturday and Sunday the 22 nd and 23 rd this month. Bring your car out and run on the most famous racetrack in the United States plus bring you body out and help put the race on. Temperatures were moderate and the track was dry. I decided to run my SREN in the sprint race earlier in the day and share the Enduro driving with my friend Mark Wild (#98 S2000 Dark Blue). As my co-driver was racing in group 6, I was to start the Enduro. The Steward had given us express instructions to be 'good' on the first two laps - and we were. We started about 27 cars. All types of cars - everything from two GT1 cars to a V/H entry. Several SRENs were in the race. I was girded 14th due to a stellar (NOT) qualifying run for the Sprint race. Note to self - next time make sure the vac advance line is connected before the qualifying session. Two years of not racing and four years since being in this car DID show in my performance. It was very important to watch your mirrors and be extra aware of what was happening around you. The speed differences of some of these cars was very large. It seems we were able to co exist on the same track as the whole idea was to have fun and we did! A side benefit of the Enduro actually turned out to be the mandatory pit (Continued on page 2)

It gave my crew members a chance to really be a part of the race contest. We had to work out a pit strategy and then execute it. Our car required that the rear panel be removed to be fueled. Then the front panel had to come off so the pedals could be moved as the second driver is a lot taller than I am. To make it easier for my old eyes to see I had a crew member with a pit board go out to the wall when my time was up and show me the sign to "#26 - PIT NOW'. But due to extreme concentration on the car in front of me (at least that s what I told the crew chief), I missed the pit board twice! When I entered the pit lane there were a lot of cars pitting - as it was about 1/2 way through the race. It was great that my crew chief had a sign on a pole to let me know where my pit area was located. I did not want to get out of the car and have to push it back to the fuel cans and fuel jugs. The pit stop went off without a hitch - except maybe trying to handle a socket wrench nuts and bolts with racing gloves and a helmet still on. Anyway - my co-driver got in the car and finished without incident and matched my lap times. He had never been in the car before so I applaud his extra efforts. We finished mid pack and had a great time at the after race celebration. NOTE to SCCR - if you do this event again - COUNT ME AND MY CREW IN! Mini-Enduro Winning Car Being an Enduro the finishing positions were overall position instead of class positions. The Podium finishers were: in First Place Dan Nicotera and Dave Knaack driving a GT1 Grand Prix, in Second Place Ed Mecum Sr. and our own Mike Piecko driving a Thunder Roadster and in Third Place Chad Ironman Hallonquist driving solo in a Spec Miata. Our congratulations to the Podium finishers and to all that drove in the event plus our congratulations to SCCR for a well put on and fun event. 5- Blackhawk Farms - Sold!! News Release from Blackhawk Farms Raceway August 31st, 2007 Blackhawk Farms Raceway, a Stateline racing fixture for 30 years, changed ownership on August 31st, Paul Musschoot, owner of General Kinematics Corp. of Crystal Lake, Illinois, has purchased and will take over track operations from Raymond Irwin, current proprietor and facility operator. Blackhawk Farms raceway was built in 1967 by Tito and Marcia Nappi on a 219 acre farm just west of South Beloit with the original track layout designed by local racing legend Jerry Dunbar. Since being built, Blackhawk has hosted events for sports cars, motorcycles, karts, and > other racing venues. Although not a long track, Blackhawk is very challenging technically, and the "family" atmosphere of the facility is nationally known as one of its most endearing features. Since it was built, Blackhawk has challenged many of the most famous names in road racing: (Continued on page 3) Page: 2

3 (Continued from page 2) the Andretti s, Sterling Moss, Paul Newman, Walter Payton, Boris Said, and Alan Jones (F1 Champion) to name a few. Mike and Raymond Irwin bought the facility from the Nappis in 1986 and made many improvements over the next 20 years, including renovating many of the buildings, and resurfacing the track itself several times. In 2005, Mike retired and Raymond assumed operations with the help of Paul Depirro and Cindy Robinson. Raymond Irwin also owns and operates Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kansas. The new owner of Blackhawk Farms Raceway, Paul Musschoot, has been involved in the racing industry since the late 70's. Starting as a technical inspector for the SCCA, Musschoot went on to campaign cars in > SCCA GT-1 and Trans-Am racing into the early 80's. Taking a break from racing, Musschoot helped build his current business into a global player in the materials handling industry, of which he is currently President and CEO. Returning to racing in the GT-1 class in the late 90's, Musschoot has spent a significant amount of time at racing at Blackhawk Farms. He plans to continue the family friendly atmosphere the track provides, while taking a fresh look at facilities and the overall track experience. 6 Rule-A-Thon The annual Rule-A-Thon for proposed rule changes was held at Blackhawk Farms on Saturday 8/25. The results are posted on the Council forum web site, for review and comment by all members. Joe NSSCC NSSCC Board Meeting Minutes August 16, 2007 Ritzy s Café Rolling Meadows In Attendance: Robert Dudek, Bill Marquardt, John Saccameno, Lynn Serra, Gary Weis 7:15pm Called to Order Lynn Serra Minutes from July 26, 2007 meeting were approved.(m & 2 Marquardt and Dudek) Treasurer s Report Frank Skweres Balance due to Road America now. Report was approved. (M & 2 Dudek and Weis) Steward s Report Gary Weis (The following are highlights from the MC BOD meeting of August 9, Please refer to complete minutes There was a discussion about raising entry fees for the Drivers Schools as there has typically been a significant loss of revenue for these events. The self-insurance fund has been deemed to be used for things such as Council property; may be able to submit claims to K&K for track damage. Bruce Hazelton discussed options for getting race sponsorship and the need for a PR person to coordinate such activities for Council. Members were assigned tracks to contact for 2008 dates; June 21 st would not be a good date as the Safety Team will be unavailable. Eric Hoffman has accepted the Director of HSA position. There was some discussion about car groupings for next year; numbers of cars per group will be a major determining factor. The meetings have found a permanent home at Ritzy s Café in Rolling Meadows. The meetings will be at 7:45pm the third Thursday of every month preceded by the club s board meeting (7pm) at the same location. All members are invited to attend both meetings. Please forward your pix and vids with driver bio to jeremie. toma@sbcglobal.net Mentor Program Matt Lagessie Is This Some Sort of a Sign - By Don Behm Emu shows up at West Bend Wal-Mart West Bend Employees of a Wal-Mart Supercenter here corralled an Emu with shopping carts outside the store at 6 a.m. today, police Lt. Gus Unertl said. Though the big bird did get into the store at 1515 W. Paradise Drive, a manager fed him grapes and apples while inside the makeshift enclosure in an attempt to calm the Emu. A coyote likely chased Myron, a 3-year-old male Emu, from his home, the Meadowbrook Market and Pumpkin Farm at 2970 Mileview Road, said the bird's owner, Richard Takacs. Barrington Car Show Lynn Serra Upon investigation this looks like a top end show and may be by invitation only. The board had no interest to pursue. Bill Marquardt mentioned that Maryville Academy had a car show recently to benefit the nuns which drew 100 s of spectators. Special Awards Gary Weis Gary has offered to put together a complete list of the NSSCC Special Awards so that the membership can begin to submit their nominees rather than doing this at the last minute. "They can run 40 miles an hour, so that was just a quick sprint for Myron," Takacs said. Two other emus at the farm also bolted from their pen when the suspected intruder entered the farm about 3 a.m., he said. The pair was found in a nearby pumpkin field. After Takacs retrieved an obviously frightened Myron from Wal-Mart, he placed the bird by himself in a pasture so he would feel safe and relax. Myron is one of six emus in an animal petting area open to school children and other visitors to the pumpkin patch and haunted corn field, Takacs said.
