THIS CAR WILL BE STOCK APPEARING WITH ORIGINAL HUB CAPS EVEN! THIS GUY CAN'T WAIT TILL THE PUNK IN THE JAP CAR WITH LOUD EXHAUST AND EVEN LOUDER STEREO Driven for Charity - Tom Tarr, Member at Large Recently, BMWs 12 th Annual Drive for A Cure made its way through Chicagoland and lucky for me I was able to book myself out of the office that day. For those not familiar with it, the program allows people to visit a participating BM W dealer and test-drive the BM W of their choice. For every mile driven, the BM W Corporation donates $1 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. (Of note--bill Jacob s BM W has raised the most of any BM W dealer in the U.S. for multiple years in a row.) Pretty cool, right? Drive great cars while earning money to help fight breast cancer. Talk about a labor of love and I was up to the task. It was quite a sight to see a fleet of over a dozen white German sports cars with tricked out graphics coming in and out of the dealer s lot. While I waited for one of the lucky college not. Enjoys his/her specialty and performs the duties to the best of their abilities. Member of the Year Nominees should be a NSSCC member who has performed an outstanding service(s) for the club. S portsman of the Year Should be a competitor that displays excellence in character, spirit, and competition. This person will go out of his/her way to help others and will ask for nothing in return. Ross Fosbender Enthusiasm Award - Self explanatory. Please send all nominations to me at lynnellynserra@att. net. Please include a few sentences about your nominee and what make him/her a good candidate for the award for which you are nominating them. Voting for the special awards will occur during the November 19 th board meeting. nsscc AND HIS BASEBALL CAP ON BACKWARDS MEETS HIM AT A STOP LIGHT, ONLY IN AMER- ICA. REM EM BER FOLKS 'WHEN THE GREEN LIGHT DROPS THE BULLSHIT STOPS'! YOUR VICE, MADDMATT NSSCC kids working for the event to get me into the 650i coupe, I learned that I could actually drive any car in the special fleet that was sitting around. M ost excellent! Oh, except the B7 Alpina (500 horses and 0-60 in 4.8 seconds) and the M3 Coupe (414 horses and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds) they can be driven only by people who reserved a time via the Internet. Sorry sir, I was told. I won t forget this fine point next year. Adult Tonka Toy While I m not a fan of SU Vs, I started by jumping into the one of the newest in the BMW fleet the X6, a coupeish looking SU V, this one with the new 3.0 liter, 300hp twin turbo, inline six that hauled the 4,800 pound sport ute from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. I must admit this is a machine that is hard to describe. Getting into it was what I imagined a grown up interpretation of a toy Tonka truck might (Continued on page 4) 3

4 (Continued from page 3) be like. Thick and muscular, with a high riding position, it had a well-padded small-diameter steering wheel and paddle shifters for BM Ws Steptronic automatic transmission. So what did it drive like? While sports-car tight like most BM Ws, I was amazed at how supple the suspension was over the gaping expansion joints in the pavement. The predetermined road course also had a couple of descent curves to allow me see how the suspension interacted with the massive wheels and 255/50R-20 run-flat tires under hard acceleration. Tight, flat and confident. And in new BM W fashion, enough electronic controls to help keep most people out of trouble for being too exuberant on the way to pick up the kids. Considering the uncertainty of future gas prices, I d pass on the 4.8-liter, 360hp V8 and stay with the twin-turbo six. M odern-day Doctor s Car Next up, the 650i Coupe. Low slung and meaty and wide at the shoulders, it had a 4.8-liter, DOHC, 360hp V8. This thing was smooth and fast almost defying you to try and wrinkle it s suit. Even though it was 90-plus degrees outside I had to open the windows to enjoy the sound of that motor taking 3,800 pounds from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. It felt larger than an Aston Martin Vantage and leaned more towards touring and less sporty. The 650i s handling enabled you to eat hard corners while letting your passenger lazily talk about things you re not going to be paying any attention to. Obnoxious Neighbor s Car Back at the dealer, I m not sure if it was the heat, but the 4-door M5 seemed to be talking trash to me. So I decided to play along. What a brute from the get go. From an outward appearance, the white paint and leather seating for 5 people hid the warning that the quad exhaust and 285/35ZR-19 rear tires were projecting pay attention and be ready to work. The V-10 wasn t shy about its 500hp and 383lb. of torque one bit it ROARED. And I wouldn t call BM W a liar with their figures of this 4000 lb. car going from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Handling shockingly precise, approaching being over-assisted, it demanded your full attention if were at all aggressive in using your right foot. This car begged for a track, not a public road. And hopefully a smooth track because it was so tight, I couldn t imagine subjecting 3 or 4 friends to a drive of any length on area expressways in this thing. ROSDOM Car In my mind, the only car left to drive in the line up was the new 1 series, the 135i to be exact. With 1,500 lbs. less car to push around than in the X6, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo, inline six felt like it was in just the right size car. Power was effortless and with the electronics switched off, the 245/35R-18 performance tires turned without concern for the pavement under them. The steering wheel seemed to ask my brain directly, where do you want to put the car, with just the right amount of feel and feedback. Suddenly, the directions from my on-track HSAX instructor were front and center. This car was tight but not rough, agile with a strong feel of confidence. There is not doubt in my mind, I could Race this On Saturday and Drive it On Monday. Nice work BMW, I can feel good about you donating a dollar a minute for a couple of hours of my time while I unsuspectingly shopped for my next car guilt-free car shopping it just doesn t get any better than this. 5 NSSCC Member Wins All Alfa Event Race - John S accameno, NSSCC Competition Director The Alfa Romeo Owners Club held their annual 2008 convention in Chicago this year. In addition to the usual Alfisti convention activities, an all Alfa Romeo enduro was held at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet on June 16 th. The race was scheduled at the end of a day of spirited track lapping by various AROC members who travelled in from around the country to enjoy their Italian rides at the new racetrack. A two-race format was utilized with each 50-minute race requiring a five-minute mandatory pit stop. Over thirty racecars participated in the two groups, which featured a wide variety of models and ages, mostly vintage. Andy and M ike Besic of Besic M otorsports were very instrumental in organizing the race, with recent Council vintage racers Craig Beilat, Ken Girard, and Rock Meskauskas competing with the national crowd. North Suburban s John Wheeler (25 Blue) won the second group race outright in his 1974 GTV. John had bent his new motor at the previous Council race and thrashed for two weeks reassembling the one he has been using over the past three seasons. Apparently it was strong enough to pull off a tidy win over some fresher, but not faster, equipment. Overall, it was a great day at Autobahn filled with great cars, drivers and an overall win for John. NSSCC A Happy Winner Quali fied Second on Grid President Lynn Serra Lynn and Wolfe Lynn and Johannes Van Overbeek 5

6 Timing and Scoring - Peter Anderson, Member at Large At the August 10th M idwestern Council '50 Years of Gears and Beers' event, I had the pleasure of starting my race from the pole position. :-) That s a very nice place to be. Plenty of clear track in front of you at the start. First of all the pole sitter gets to choose the drivers left or right starting position. E.G. At BHF most pole sitters choose the Drivers Right line. I was in this position as the pole winner had some type of car problem and did not make it to the grid prior to its closing. Quickly in my mind this brought up some interesting possibilities about timing and scoring procedures I have not previously written about. What advantage(s) does the pole sitter have? Choosing drivers left or right at the start. The speed (or more appropriately which gear he is in) is dictated (per the GCR) by the speed of the pace car and is to be maintained until the green flag is shown. The car in position 2 cannot be ahead of the pole car. Cars behind you must line up 'behind' you in a relatively straight line. Microsoft vs. GM For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon. In response to Bill's comments, General M otors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like M icrosoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part): 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash...twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down 6 What happens if you qualify and do not make it to the grid before it closes? The Stewards can allow you to enter the course during the race. Who is a 'Starter"? Cars positioned on the starting grid. Cars entering the race after the initial start are also considered 'Starters'. What qualifies you as a 'Finisher'? If you complete 1/2 of the laps of the winner. Uneven numbers round down. When does the race start? When the 'Starter' waves the green flag. Note this occurs prior to crossing the startfinish line. The initial lap 'leader' is the car that crosses the start-finish line first after the green flag flies. What is the 'lead' lap? You are on the 'lead' lap if you are the race leader or have not yet been passed by the race leader. What race 'lap' am I on? The lap you are 'in' is equal to how many times you have crossed the start-finish line. The laps you have completed is the number of times you have crossed the start finish line less the initial crossing after the green flag. When is the race over? When you see the checkered flag. :-) NSSCC and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. M acintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single 'This Car Has Performed an Illegal Operation' warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask 'Are you sure?' before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the 'Start' button to turn the engine off.
