1 FROM THE PRESIDENT Wow, the club s 50 th Anniversary activities just seem to get better and better with much more to come! (By the way, that was the plan of a very dedicated 50 th Anniversary Committee!) Our annual car show was a huge success! Thank you Mother Nature and to everyone that worked so hard to make this annual charity fundraiser such a success. PLEASE give serious thought to getting involved in some of the leadership of this valuable event for next year. Last week, a display featuring the Cedar Rapids Corvette Club s first 50 years was set up with the help of members at the Cedar Rapids History Center. We are trying to set up a time so that we can visit as a group and will let you know the date. Those of you who attended June s meeting know that a Gazette reporter was in attendance and also took some pictures of the members present. By the time you get this newsletter, an article should have been published about our club s history, past, present and future. It took a lot of phone calls to get anyone interested, but when I finally did, I have to admit that they really made an effort. The reporter even contacted Lowell Phelps, a charter member, whom you can renew friendships with or meet for the first time at our banquet on August 3 rd at the Marriott. Speaking of the banquet, the last day to have your reservations with payment to Larry Bushaw is July 20 th. I have heard some questions on the price of the meal for non-members. Early this year, the club approved a budget for our year-long celebration. The 50 th anniversary committee voted to subsidize the cost of the meal for members in the hopes that we could have all members attend. The actual cost of the meal to the club, July 2013 Beyond the Glass 1 including room rental, etc. is reflected in the nonmember cost. This celebration is a once in a lifetime event for YOU and your club. I would hate to think that you would miss this event. Don't forget the July 10 th photo shoot at Pat McGrath Chevyland. Please wear your Anniversary shirt (and pants, Bob) if you have one or a dark shirt if you don't. Pat McGrath has been a longtime sponsor and is looking forward to getting the most Corvettes possible in front of his showroom for pictures. We certainly owe him that! Let's hope that the weather gets settled soon so that we can enjoy the summer starting with the 4 th of July holiday! 6 Behind the Wheel with the Competition Director Welcome Race Fans! The time for our Hawkeye Downs Low Speed Autocross is nearly here. On Saturday, Aug. 10 we will be holding our Practice Autocross at Hawkeye Downs. We will be out there setting up at 8 am. We can always use help setting up the course, setting up the timing equipment and just getting stuff out. This practice is open to everyone and any type of car. The fee is $15.00 of which $5.00 will be donated to the Honor Flight Fund. The remainder goes to meet the cost of the track rental, ice, and water. Any money remaining goes in the competition fund. This is a good opportunity to drive your car on an oval track, and also through a course set up with cones. Come out and play with your car and improve your driving, braking and steering skills. We will have the timer set up, but that doesn t mean this is a competition. You drive at the speed you are comfortable with; no one will be pushing you to go faster. We hold a practice autocross for our club members enjoyment and to have a dry run before our NCCC sanctioned event on Aug 24 and 25. The Big Event!! Our NCCC sanctioned Low Speed Autocross will be held Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25. On Friday, August 23 we will host a Welcome Party at the Clarion Hotel on 33rd Avenue for our entrants and all CRCC members. We will be registering and teching cars starting at 6:00 pm. Registration is held in the meeting room behind the bar while tech will be held in the parking lot. This competition welcomes all Corvette drivers, but if you are not an NCCC member or you are not driving a Corvette, you will be classed as a guest. If you would like to help with anything, please come out. Don t worry if you think July 2013 Beyond the Glass 6 you don t know anything about it. We will explain, and we won t throw you in over your head. Things that need to be done on Saturday, August 24: Saturday morning 6:30 7:00 am Set up shelters, get out tables and chairs, get cones out, set up tech area, set up staging, help set up the course, chalk the cones on the course, set up display, timing lights, set up the computer and the printer. Set up the big display easel board-cover with sheet for the stickers. Saturday morning 7:00 am Registration. Fill out registration sheets and tech sheets. Collect money and make change. Set up a table for signing the waiver and wristbands. Set up a table for coffee and donuts. Tech the cars that have registered today. Sheets with classes and needed information will be furnished. Bring supplies for coffee, pre-order donuts and pick them up in the morning. Saturday morning 8:45 am Drivers Meeting then racing starts. Help with staging (sending cars to the start line). Starters need a couple so they can relieve each other. Crow s Nest watches the cars call in when cones are hit or car goes off the track. Also waves flags for caution and stop. Will have radio contact with the timing table. Corner workers usually sit on the stage, watch for cones and cars off track, call in on radio. Will have a vehicle parked out there

7 with oil dry, broom, shovel, and fire extinguisher. Driver must stay with vehicle (golf cart or gator etc.) and be readily available to drive out to pick up cones or to respond to emergencies, spills, etc. Timing table help Larry or Jon Pickrell give them breaks. If you are interested in the timing and are computer literate, this is a good time to check it out. Sticker runner takes stickers from the label printer and put it in the appropriate spot. Water boy or girl Help fill coolers with water and ice. Take bottles of water to the starter, stagers and crow s nest. Saturday afternoon/early evening help set up for Pizza Party. Set up tables, put out donated food, put out coolers of pop. Put away timing equipment. After Pizza party, need to put food away, clean up. Things that need to be done on Sunday, August 25: Sunday morning 6-7 am Registration trailer, waivers and wristbands, set up shelters, take work vehicle out to track, set up fresh display board. Set up table for coffee and donuts, and leftover food. Fill coolers with ice and water, may need to go get ice. Set up timing equipment, display, and timing table. I know it sounds like a lot, but with plenty of help, everyone only has to work part of the day. We have a lot of fun, talk with people from other clubs and regions, and watch some pretty fast cars! If we all work together, we can do everything by the book and have a smooth running, enjoyable event that all our entrants will want to come back to. After all, this is how we maintain our competition budget, which in turn maintains our trailer and equipment fund, and helps support CRCC. A big thanks to everybody who has helped in the past, and continues to do so; you guys are the ones who make this possible! Chris Beebe, CRCC Competition Director I would like everyone coming to the banquet to take some time and look for some of your best older pictures of you and what car you may have had in Please let me either display it on a special table or scan it so we can share with all the others at the banquet. 8 Thanks to All! Two years ago, I believe, we set a record for entrants registering at our annual Cruisin the Ave Charity Car Show, with 207 and just under 200 in attendance. This year, we shattered that record number with 250 entrants! It s carefully estimated that capacity for the top of the parkade is around 220, so the first round of thanks go to our members, who sacrificed bringing their Corvette in order to make more room for our guest entrants. Although the figures aren t officially tabulated, yet, and there may be some late money coming in, or going out, we re very much in the neighborhood of the $12,000 raised last year for our 4 charities. We had the Klein Tool raffle to help us make up the difference on losing a major sponsor, but some of our other tables numbers were down a little from last year, so things evened out and we re pretty happy with the check we re going to be able to present in October. There are many people to thank for the show s success. Foremost are the major sponsors who make the big numbers happen. Linn County Dairy Queens, Master Tool and Mfg., Eddie s Rod & Custom and Performance Concepts are repeatsupporters, as are many of our other contributors. We ll get them all mentioned in upcoming newsletters, along with our trophy sponsors. All of our day-of-the-show workers deserve high praise, indeed but again they re too numerous to mention at this time. Some really stepped up, this year, however. Our gang-in-the-trenches, (our data entry people, working in the management offices below), really came through for us, in light of the record number of entrants. John & Audrey Dolphin did a lot of preliminary work getting the early registrants entered, along with Pat Blake, Madeline Watertor, Kathy Willenborg and others, who pitched in on the show date. Special mention, here, to Judy Westergren past member who used to handle this job and knows the system very well. According to John, the system was about to collapse, and Judy showed up on literally a moment s notice, to save the entire show results! We owe her big time! July 2013 Beyond the Glass 8 Chris and Linda Thompson (day-of-the-show registration) put in a lot of preliminary work, also, getting window cards filled out for the early entrants, in order to save time at the registration trailer. Terry Primrose and Pam Parrish (and hubbies, Denny and Bob, respectively) did another bang-up job with prizes, both silent and door types. Special mention here to Marlene Wasendorf, who single-handedly covered her hometown of Anamosa, garnering prizes from many businesses. This is the type of member needed to make this show a success! I d like to personally thank Wayne Martin, who has been my partner and co-chair for the past 9 years, for all his help and service to this show. Wayne has been very instrumental in soliciting sponsors, general planning, donating many prizes out of his own pocket, stuffing envelopes for past entrants, distributing fliers, rounding up the sound system and handling the announcements over the p.a. on the day of the show among many other duties. Most of you do not see and have no idea what goes on behind-the-scenes, to pull off this show. It has actually become too much for 2, or 3, co-chairs which brings up this subject - the future of the charity car show. No one has come forward to take over the responsibility of chairing the show, and I understand why. It takes a ton of time. Wayne has decided to step out of the co-chair position, but will stay on in a greatly-reduced capacity. He and his wife, Linda, who just celebrated their 48 th anniversary, have been traveling more and enjoying life to its fullest. And 9 years at the helm of this show is more than

9 most would endure. He has served his club well and deserves your thanks. rewarding. Find your personal reason for helping others. This year, we received many, many compliments and positive comments on the show. We ve got the ball rollin, so let s keep it that way! Thank you all for a great show! Dick Butschi, co-chair I would also like to thank a new member, Lori Brendes, who was my right-hand person, throughout the planning and organization of this year s show handling everything from stuffing envelopes and selling raffle tickets to running lastminute errands on the day of the show and filling-in where and when needed. She was also very supportive through my health and family issues, these past months. I have decided to stay on as a co-chair of the show, even after 11 years of helping to make this event happen. I do this, in part, in memory of my late son, Tom, a victim of cystic fibrosis, who was a club member with me in my first year, and my brother, Marty, who recently died from aggressive dementia and a stroke. I guess we all need to find reasons to do meaningful things. In the words of Lewis Carroll, One of the secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others. I would like to put together a panel of members, to meet and evaluate the various aspects of the show. If it is to continue to exist and grow, we ve got to get more members involved and make some changes. Many hands make light work for all. If you have some ideas for change and improvement, or just have decided to help out more, please contact me, as we will try to meet very soon. I m anticipating that every aspect of the show will be evaluated and eventually handled by a designated number of members not just on the day of the show, but throughout the entire planning stages. These groups will be formed by this fall. Let s all get on board with this, as it should be fun and personally THANK YOU to all of you that have sent in your reservations for the banquet. If you haven t done so, please make it a priority today to mail in your reservations. $25.00 for 2013 CRCC members Pre-payment required Make checks payable to Cedar Rapids Corvette Club and mail payment to: PO Box 414; Marion, IA Please note: Meal reservations MUST be postmarked no later than July 20, If you have questions Jim bread1112@gmail.com or Larry lebushaw@msn.com July 2013 Beyond the Glass 9
