Car of the Month - Gordon & Mary Edwards My wife and I moved from Indianapolis, Indiana after purchasing a home in Sun Lakes, AZ. We made the move permanent in November 2016, and are now official residents of AZ. In 1969 my mother and father purchased our Frost Turquoise 1967 Mustang with 15K miles. It is very special to me as it has been in the family so long and I also drove it to my senior prom in Mom was the primary driver and put on 5 K miles after 16 years of ownership. Most of the time it just sat in her garage and in mine due to the unpredictability of Indiana Weather. It has not been driven in the winter or inclement conditions since we owned it and I last gave it a full body wash when I acquired it in I have put just over 5K miles myself in 31 years of ownership. It was built with a speed automatic with no power or A/C, Sport Sprint trim package and black vinyl top. The Actual mileage is just over 25 K. We joined the Mustang Club of Indianapolis in 1987, and are now proud members of the Copperstate Mustang Club. This club like the Indy club has many wonderful members and is a family oriented club. We also own a 2010 Grabber Blue GT. We have both retired, Mary in 2004 from primary education and me in 2011 from Amtrak as a course developer and instructor. This move required many hours of driving, and hard work as we did it ourselves over two years. My first mustang was a blue 66 coupe, since then we have owned an additional 66 coupe red, 65 green coupe with bench front seat, 69 Mach I, 79 fastback, 2001 conv. the 67 and now a 2010 the latest to the corral and this is just mustangs. Add to that 16 others an assortment of VW, Chevy, Suzuki, Pontiacs, Jeeps and 10 other Fords. And of course a 2005 Fleetwood Tioga Class C motorhome with you guessed it a 2004 Ford E450 chassis. The rate of change has slowed over the last few years. We went from 5 garage spaces in Indiana to two here.

Car of the Month In the fall of 2016 having become tired or the lack of power steering and old shoe type brakes which needed rebuilding. I contracted a friend from the Mustang Club of Indianapolis to install a Borgeson power steering unit and Master Power power disk brakes. In 1967 power assisted disk brakes was an option, not this style of power steering. The car is completely original except for these two items. Once the car was finished it was shipped via Classic Carriers of Zionsville, Indiana. I received it 1/13/2017. Originally I joined the MCI to ensure insurability through J.C. Taylor in 1987 we had so much fun we remained members for 29 years and now a member in Name only to complete an even 30. I joined The Copperstate Mustang Club at a 2015 spring car show at Berge Ford. My fleet is now licensed and insured in AZ. Gordon & Mary Edwards

Club Trip Recap On Oct 14 bright and early, 7 am, all the ponies started to gather red, yellow, blue, yellow, gray with red and tan non-ponies. 15 Mustangers were at the Cracker Barrel in Chandler. Everyone had a great breakfast and was ready to head on down for our trip. We headed on down to Tombstone. There we saw the old west town with gravel main street and board sidewalks. The gun slingers were in the street and ready to act out a mock gun fight. The stage coaches were on the street taking people here and there. (little did we know that a real ruckus did take place that morning in a saloon with a man and his side arm gun). We went to Big Nose Kates restaurant which had all with the original furnishings a large decorative bar and many round wooden tables. Lunch was enjoyed by everyone there. After lunch we walked down the street to the Bird Cage Theatre. In the theatre a man told of many happenings there and pointed out bullet holes in the wall. A very interesting back part of the building was a museum with the original stage and piano. It included box seats and other side rooms. The drive to Bisbee was short and got us to the Queen Mine for our tour. Everyone put on their copper id pin, vest, helmet, light and climbed aboard the small train for the tour, which was 700 feet down under ground. Our guide was an elderly man who had worked in the mine. He was full of information on the tools and techniques used by the miners. We saw the dynamite fuses, cars pulled by mules, and even the potty. It is hard to imagine the work was all previously done by candle light. When leaving the mine, we drove by part of the current mining area and then a drive through main street of Bisbee. Our motel was about a half hour from Bisbee and we were ready to head there and refresh before going to dinner. La Casita Mexican restaurant was recommended by Becky and was best place in town to eat. They accommodated our large group and we enjoyed the fine dinner and margaritas. After the long busy Saturday, we all were happy to start Sunday slowly with leisurely breakfast at the Comfort Inn. About 11 am, we got in the ponies again and drove to Kartchner Caverns which was about a half hour drive. We had reservations for the big room that had just opened for the winter season. This room does not open in summer as it is a nursery for the 800 bat colony that reside in the cave. The cave was discovered in 1965 and kept secret until The property was purchased by AZ parks in 1988 and opened to public in It is a live cave with warmth, moisture and growing formations. Very interesting for everyone. All the ponies headed home from there. A BIG thanks to Chevie for arranging the trip!!! Bob

The Trans-Am Wars Cont. Chapter Nine 1969, Part 3 Blood Feud Flashpoints Rather than reviewing a short summary of all the events, we ll look at the three most important races that made the 1969 season a war between Ford and Chevrolet. Race One Michigan International Speedway In a race marked by rain, sleet, snow, mud, and the crash of Shelby driver Kwech that tragically took the life of a spectator; SCCA officials declared Donohue s Camaro the winner, but Penske s own lap and time keeper, Judy Stropus, told Penske that Parnelli Jones had actually won the race. Penske quickly made Stropus and team coordinator Chuck Cantwell disappear and kept quiet himself, while the SCCA sorted out the details as a result of Bud Moore s protests. Penske would have acknowledged Jones win if the protest was kept professional, but Homer Perry, the Ford liaison to both the BME and Shelby teams, made the argument personal. To his face, Perry called Penske, a spoiled rich kid who would not admit to getting GM help. Penske was infuriated and his lack of interest in the Trans-Am rotated 180 degrees. BME won the protest and Jones was declared the winner five hours later, but Perry made a serious mistake attacking Penske. Returning to the team workshop, Roger stated, I don t care what else we do this year. We re going to beat those guys whatever it takes. Penske s Trans-Am season became a personal vendetta against Ford, and the competition between Ford and Chevrolet drivers became a war. Race Seven St. Jovite Although Mustangs were faster and won four races (BME 3, Shelby 1) to Camaro s two (both Penske), Ford was leading Chevrolet by only six points in the championship due to the Chevy s reliability and better pit work by Penske s pit crew. In the St. Jovite race, Jones retired after only seven laps and Follmer s engine blew on Lap 14 just as he crested a rise on the track, leaving a large pool of oil on the track. Following competitors could not see the danger, and SCCA corner workers compounded the hazard by displaying the yellow caution flag, rather than the yellow and red stripe oil flag. In Trans-Am racing, the front-running teams interpreted a yellow flag as driving at 9/10 s compared to 10/10 s. The resulting crashes had a major implication on the championship. Incredibly, both Penske Camaros made it through the slick section, but both Shelby Mustangs crashed and suffered major damage. Already down one chassis as a result of Kwech s crash at Michigan, Shelby mechanics were forced to cut both cars in half just to make one car ready for the next race at Bridgehampton s Race Eight held just seven days later. After all repairs were completed, both Shelby cars continuously suffered from chassis flex and couldn t hold suspension settings for more than a couple laps. At St. Jovite, the Shelby American Mustangs morphed from great race cars to also rans. From the Ford standpoint, the situation was even worse; St. Jovite was Mark Donohue s second win in a row and Chevrolet grabbed the championship points lead. Penske Racing never looked back. With the aid of Chevrolet R&D, ground lost in pre-season experimentation was more than regained, and Penske Camaros won all of the remaining races but the races still had to be run.

The Trans-Am Wars Race Twelve - Riverside Finale Parnelli Jones did not like Mark Donohue because Mark always used to say that he was beating the Ford factory team with no Chevrolet help when it was a poorly kept secret that Penske Racing received engineering and special parts support from Chevrolet R&D. Although the Sears Point tire test incident was resolved more than a month before the Riverside race, Jones a Firestone distributor was still fuming that Donohue stole a set of the new Firestone racing tires. During the Riverside race, after pitting for new tires and a full tank of gas, Mark exited the pits right in front of hard-charging Parnelli. Carrying a heavy load of fuel and with fresh tires not yet up to racing temperatures, Mark braked early, causing Jones to ram into the back of the Penske Camaro. Both cars spun and Follmer in the second BME Mustang grabbed the lead. Whereas Donohue drove away and rejoined the race, Jones slowly drove around the track. Donohue s stealing of the new Firestone tire, combined with the crash, was too much for Jones to endure. Waiting for Donohue to appear in his mirrors, Jones pulled in front of Donohue and blocked at a couple of corners before just slamming on his Mustang s brakes in front of the Sunoco Camaro. After the second collision, Donohue again continued; but Jones pulled into the pits and retired. To nearby reporters, Parnelli called Mark a dirty driver. Post-race analysis showed that Jones could have continued, but he didn t. It was a huge mistake. During Follmer s second pit stop, a wheel broke and he slammed into the pit wall and crushed his Mustang s suspension. Donohue won the race, his sixth win of the season (Bucknum also won twice), the Penske Camaro s finished 1-2, and Chevrolet won the championship. Conclusion Penske s Sunoco Camaros were not always the fastest cars on the track, but they were the best prepared. Between each race, the cars were completely rebuilt, including new paint for the engine compartment and underside of the cars. Facilitating superior preparation were outstanding pit stops and seconds gained in the pits transferred to distance on the track. At Mid-Ohio, Jones required thirty-four seconds for his two pit stops; Bucknum in the second Sunoco Camaro need only nineteen. The fifteen seconds gained by Penske s pit crew converted to Bucknum s thirteen second margin of victory. At Sears Point, Jones Mustang was clearly the faster car, but Penske s quicker pit stops enabled Donohue to beat Jones to the checkered flag by a mere two seconds. When opportunity presented a chance, Penske s team seized the opening and Chevrolet reaped the profits. In terms of driving ability, all of the front-runners became more aggressive and ultimately faster. Parnelli Jones believed that he and Follmer made Donohue a better driver because their Mustangs were always pushing the Sunoco Camaro to the limit. Reflecting back, driver/sports commentator Sam Posey agreed with Jones assessment. Posey believed that Parnelli represented a higher level of driving and Donohue was afraid he might not be able to stay up with the BME driver. Donohue subsequently focused on improving his own his race skills and he succeeded. Posey concluded, In the end, Donohue was as good as any of the guys. In 1969, no quarter was given and none was taken; and this attitude more than carried over into Next Installment: Trans-Am 1970; The Ultimate Year Sources: Trans-Am, The Pony Car Wars by Dave Friedman; The Cars of Trans-Am Racing, by David Tom; The Unfair Advantage by Mark Donohue with Paul Van Valkenburg; Mark Donohue, Technical Excellence at Speed by Michael Argetsinger; Mark Donohue: His Life in Photographs by Michael Argetsinger; Dan Gurney, The Ultimate Racer by Karl Ludvigsen.
