1 December OFFICERS PRESIDENT JEFF MINX VICE PRESIDENT Don Cook SECRETARY Becky Field TREASURER JoAnn Martorano SGT. AT ARMS Sarah Talahongva MEMBER OF THE MONTH Tom Martin Growing up in the fifties set me up for the ultimate automotive experience The Mustang. My heroes were Nascar s Red Baron, Stirling Moss, Zora Arkus-Duntov, and Colin Chapman. My neighborhood was full of hot rods. My father and most of my family were employed by John Deere, one of the greatest hot rod parts manufacturers in the world. My father worked on lots of friend s cars who had experience hauling serious liquid refreshment very late at night to meet river boats in small towns along the Mississippi. They had really fast Fords and so did my Dad. He was a Ford Man. It was catching. My first car at 16 was a 1949 Ford coupe, found in a secluded backyard, not running and looking ugly at a cost of $35. After milled heads, dual Stromberg 97 carbs, headers, dual points and lowering blocks, it ran real slick. My mom called it cold love ; I called it Midnight Lightning. The streets were not calm anymore. Later I also had a dual carb 54 Ford Skyliner with a plexi-glass top, but it bit the dust in a race with a Model A coupe. When my father went to buy a new 65 Ford Galaxy 500 XL at Sexton Ford, I tried to make a deal on a dirty red Cobra with side-curtains and wire wheels but couldn t swing it on my meager college student budget. I settled for a BRG 1958 MGA fixed head coupe used for rallies, SCCA races, gymkhanas and fun cruising. Meanwhile Carroll Shelby and Bob Bondurant were waging the Cobra Wars. One night a friend showed-off his new 1966 Mustang K model in a country road meet with 283 Chevrolet-powered Jaguar and a 55 Mercedes Gull wing. I was forever in love with Mustang.

5 Upper Crust Pizza Party The annual CMC Pizza Dinner was held a new location this year- Upper Crust Pizza in North Phoenix. Uncle Sam's in Scottsdale had lost their lease so a new location had to be found quickly. George & Sharon Maloley suggested Upper Crust, but several other locations were looked at but all others weren't suitable for different reasons. The gathering started at 5pm on Saturday November 3rd with over 30 Mustangs (and one Maverick) on display. We had 85 member participate (including three new members). Steve, the owner of the restaurant, was on hand to help any way he and his staff could. Not only did we have pizza and soft drinks but they provided wings as well. About 6pm we had a little surprise as a power line burned up across the street causing half the restaurant to go dark. Everyone continued to eat and chat. Club President Jeff Minx thanked everyone and got a round of applause for the new location. He then raffled off a new home BluRay player. The winner was Giselle and I'm sure she'll allow her husband Isaias to use it to too. We saw many new faces and several from the past including CMC Founder Bill Hopkins, founding member Gary Ellsworth and Don Waikus. As always, check our Facebook page for many more photos by club members. We would like to thank everyone for attending and thank the club for providing the dinner. If you're in the area, stop in for a meal at Upper Crust and thank Steve and his team for hosting us. Sharon, George, Carolyn & Hank

10 Member of the month Cont. The Peace Corps called after graduation for two years in Nigeria, West Africa working in community development. My ride changed to a Morris Mini- Moke, an open shrunken jeep with 10 inch wheels. The experience was unique. It was a hump rider because it was too narrow for the tracks which were the road. The mirrors got knocked off by trees and the motor mounts stressed by infrequently hitting the hump. On one trip I had ten flat tires because of temperatures and road hazards. My first Mustang was a silver1966 A code GT, A resurrection job. It was bought well, but I had no idea how much rust it had. I tried to teach my daughter to drive a stick shift on it but she was scared of its loud pipes and heavy clutch. It was fun but ultimately ended up good for only parts and scrap. Armed with new found experience with Mustangs, I was on the hunt. A friend had refinished a 1965 A-code convertible obtained from a retired lady in Sun City. I bought it enjoyed it for many years of parades, trophies, proms, home comings, mall shows and even a bit part in a movie. A divorce and employment changes forced it to become a daily driver with lots of miles. It then went into seclusion in a friend s back yard. I decided it was a keeper because of the memories. The vacuum was filled with my daughter s castoff hippy VW bus. I m sure the police didn t like it, based on the number of times I was stopped. It was returned to the Netherlands. There was no substitute for a Mustang. Two friends told me about a turquoise Mustang for sale at a gas station because the owner could not pay the bill. It was an A code 1965 coupe. In the dark I probed for rust and damage repair. It came up clean, worn and not running. It was towed, cleaned, rebuilt and really came alive. But too many hours at work, sidelined it to be traded for restoration work on the 65. Soon an admired copper glow metallic 84 Turbo GT came available from Franklin and Nancy Nickerson. It was a beauty. I was in love! It looks like it did being purchased off the Berg Ford showroom and is lowered, has a body fairing kit, and a Cervini hood. Needless to say it has provided many hours of satisfaction on the road as well as at shows. Although it hasn t hauled any shine, I bet it could.
