15 Buyer Beware - Storm Damage As we all know, the Hurricanes that struck Texas and Florida recently, have done extensive damage to many hundreds of vehicles. Some damage will be obvious and some not so obvious, such as water damage. Both Texas and Florida have laws regulating the sale and titling of damaged vehicles, with Texas having more enforcement options. This is just an overview of the information out there A Salvaged Vehicle, is one that may be defined as: totaled, reconditioned, junked, rebuilt (or) warranty returned. Every state has different laws regulating the sale/auction and titling of vehicles deemed too damaged to be repaired, by the Insurance Industry. On the surface, this sounds straightforward. If you buy a vehicle that is known to be salvaged at a reduced price, you take the risk that there is hidden damage. The buyer looks for rust, corrosion, mold and odor, etc, in areas of the vehicle that are well hidden and where it would not normally be. The problem facing a potential buyer, is NOT knowing it was a salvaged vehicle and not looking the vehicle over closely, as a result. There will be unscrupulous people who will buy many of these damaged vehicles and obtain the required Junk (or) Salvage Title and then transport them to another state and re-title them. Then the vehicle is sold to an unsuspecting person, with a "clear" title, not disclosing any storm damage (often referred to as-"title washing"). This buying and selling, could go on for years after they were damaged. The recommended thing to do is to obtain a Muti-State Title Search by VIN. Another service is a Vehicle History Report that companies like CarFax, can provide. However, the information obtained, often is only as good as the state that provided it and that is not always a given. Caveat Emptor- Let the buyer beware.

16 The Trans-Am Wars Chapter Eight 1969, Part 2 Points of Conflict To fully comprehend the level of animosity between the Ford and Chevrolet teams during the 1969 Trans- Am season, a review of the main disagreements between the teams should be reviewed. Refueling Towers Donohue, looking for another Unfair Advantage, asked Sunoco to develop a faster way to get fuel into the car a typical pit stop required ten seconds to add twenty-two gallons. Sunoco developed a twenty-foot high tower that reduced refueling speed by four seconds. Hiding the advantage, the tower was not erected until 06:00 race day morning at Michigan International for Race One. When Ford representatives arrived at the track, they immediately protested the tower s legality. Although they checked, SCCA officials could not find anything contrary to the rules. Before the next race, however, the SCCA mandated refueling towers could not be over twelve feet in height thereby legislating Donohue s Unfair Advantage out the door. The Penske team was not amused as the tower cost over $9000. At Laguna Seca s Race Nine, BME protested unsuccessfully that the Penske Camaros were under the minimum weight. Penske retaliated protesting the factory Mustangs refueling towers were too tall. The SCCA upheld the protest and Ford s special refueling rigs sat idle on race day. Driving Styles Follmer and Jones were the perfect teammates (and still remain life-long friends) since both utilized aggressive no holds barred driving styles. Jones, having started his career on dirt tracks, was accustomed to ramming drivers out of his way, especially if they tried to block him. Follmer emulated him. BME drivers aggressiveness was actually protested by several competitors at Race Three at Mid-Ohio, but the SCCA disallowed the protest. Not surprisingly, other drivers adapted the Jones/Follmer style of driving. Numerous photographs expose cars nudging and/or outright ramming their competitors. The aggression led to bad blood, especially between the Ford and Chevrolet teams. Donohue called the Trans- Am series, a knife fight. Penske Camaros Vinyl Top Roof As a result of excessive acid dipping, the Penske Camaro roofs rippled and looked uneven. Rather than replacing the roofs, Donohue placed a vinyl top on both cars. Shelby and BME argued the legality of the vinyl tops to the SCCA, but Penske countered that 44% of all Camaros were sold with vinyl roofs and were legal. Ford teams continued to argue the point and Penske eventually agreed with SCCA leaders that he would remove them in two races the cars were then testing in Michigan and the next race was in Minnesota; therefore the logistics of taking them back to Penske headquarters in Pennsylvania was too great. The SCCA agreed, but neglected to inform race officials at Brainerd, Minnesota. When the vinyl-top Camaros were presented for pre-race inspection on Friday, onsite SCCA officials declared the cars illegal and could not race as presented. Ford teams smiled, but Penske was infuriated and told his team to pack up and leave, which they did. When the Camaros did not appear on Saturday, SCCA officials scrambled. When senior SCCA administrators informed onsite officials the cars were legal, the Ford and AMC teams threatened they wouldn t race. A compromise was reached in which Penske would remove the tops before Race Six at Bryar, but the special cooling vents between the Camaros front wheelwells and the rear brakes, which the SCCA previously approved, had to be closed immediately. The Penske Camaros raced, but friction between the Ford and Chevy teams further deteriorated as Penske and Donohue believed the SCCA was giving in to Ford demands.

17 The Trans-Am Wars Cont. Track Rental Prior to a race weekend, Ford would rent the track for the entire week prior to an event. Prevented from getting the same extra practice and solutions for race setups, Penske and Donohue argued that Ford was unfairly buying a championship. The issue was never resolved and was a source of irritation for the Sunoco Camaro team. Tires From the very start of the season, Goodyear tires were noticeably superior in retaining a consistent level of grip, whereas the Firestones were deteriorating in the middle of a tire stint and losing between two-three seconds a lap. Since BME s Mustangs were forced to make extra pit stops, Ford execs became nervous. In Race Four at Bridgehampton, Follmer switched to Goodyears and easily won (as a Firestone distributor, Jones did not switch). Aggressive driving was the only way BME Mustangs could hold track position utilizing Firestone tires. Two months later at Laguna Seca s Race Nine, Firestone introduced a new wider, low profile tire. Realizing the new Firestones were superior, Donohue rented the Sears Point track for testing and invited an independent team to tag along a team equipped with the new Firestones. After setting a baseline for his Camaro on Goodyears, Donohue asked the independents if he could try their new tires. Grateful they were getting free track time, the team agreed. Donohue found the new Firestones were almost two seconds a lap faster, a decisive advantage for BME. Donohue gave Goodyear the Firestones specs and asked them to quickly develop a new tire. News of the Sears Point test quickly spread. Parnelli Jones, incensed and refusing to even talk to Donohue, demanded that Penske return the tires or else. Penske understood the nature of Jones threat and returned the tires; but the technology of the new Firestones was discovered, and Goodyear gave its teams a new tire in time for Race Ten at Kent. Bad blood between BME and Penske was reaching the flashpoint. At the Riverside finale, it exploded.
