3 SPECIAL MENTION! Tom Bootz was inadvertently left off the list of people who placed at the 2013 Runoffs. I ve put him here with my sincerest apologies! Tom Bootz - DSR Class Qualified 2nd and finished 3rd after masterswitch got knocked off by bodywork and corner worker had to come and turn it back on. Words from Chris, our RE: First I would like to thank Norma and Sharlene for another great awards banquet and congratulate all the award winners! Upcoming events: Mid div convention Jan. 31 Feb. 1, 2 National convention March 7-9 C F R school at heartland park March 15. 8am to 4:30pm. This event would be a good one for anyone in the club that might want to help with the pro race at Kansas speedway. We are looking at different ways to get more of our members involved in our events and to this end, I would like to hear from the members with any ideas ( inside or outside the box) on how to get more involvement at all of our events ( general meetings, solo, rally cross, race group, racing, etc.). Chris Kern Stay Tuned to our Checkpoint Channel. The new 2014 Race schedule for all groups is coming your way! KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA 3
4 Greetings from the National Office While we wait for the snow to melt and the temperatures to become warmer, the 2014 racing season has started in other parts of the country. Three Majors events are already in the books, with the Mid-States Conference season set to start during the second weekend of this month at NOLA Motorsports Park. Solo racers should be working to get everything tuned up and ready to go as the three Tire Rack National series are set to start in the next two months. The SCCA Tire Rack Championship Tour, in Cecil, Ga., and ProSolo Series, in Blytheville, Ark., start the ball rolling in March. The newest National solo program, The Tire Rack Match Tour, starts in April, in Wilmington, Ohio. While cars have already hit the track for the 2014 season, the SCCA National Convention and North American MotorSports Expo (MSX) are just around the corner, taking place March 7-9, in Charlotte, N.C. Aside from putting a bow on the 2013 race season with the typical Convention activities, MSX gives competitors to the chance to see some of the latest products and services available for sports car racing. The National Convention allows each SCCA member the chance to mingle with fellow racers and other enthusiasts from around the country. It doesn t matter if you are a grid worker or timing and scoring guru, each Club member is invited to join us as we celebrate the 70 th year of SCCA. Additionally, we will celebrate the latest inductions to the SCCA Hall of Fame. The 2014 class includes Kathy Barnes, Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney, Dr. Bob Hubbard, Jim Downing and Pete Hylton. Register online for the SCCA National Convention by going to SCCA.com. Registration for the convention includes admission to the SCCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony, in addition to a pass for the MSX show. Details on the Convention and MSX can be found online, as well. Stay safe, and we ll see you at the track. Chris Berg 4 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA
5 Motorsports Photography: Don t forget the fans! Article and Photographs by Doug Patterson, Patterson Prints When we go to races, either as spectators, competitors, or workers, we tend to focus a lot on the racing machines. It s natural that we do! Racing machines are among the coolest examples of engineering imaginable, next to rocket ships of course. Last time, I wrote about imaging the people that make those machines go, the engineers, mechanics, and drivers. This time, let us focus on why it is even possible for motor racing to be a profession, the fans! Myth: Race photography is all about the stars and their cars. Techniques: Including images of the fans as part of your race event photo collection helps to bring a better feel for the event s atmosphere and excitement, and it brings a much needed human element. As we mentioned last week, imaging the crew and drivers can help with this, but even they take on a somewhat detached and superhuman status. Seeing the drivers interact with fans can help to humanize them. And let s face it, some fans are just plain weird and that weirdness NEEDS to be recorded or others just won t believe you! 6 So when you re out there at an event, be it one of our club races, rallycrosses, or solo events, or at a professional event such as NASCAR or TUSCC race at Kansas Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 or the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, don t forget the fans. Remember, without us fans, there would be no professional motor racing in the first place! See you at the track. Datsun PL-510, 1971, Fully Race Prepared for Vintage/Historic Road Racing. 14 Yakety Yak Dear Mom: Charlie & Sharlene Smith did some traveling over the holidays. For Thanksgiving they went to Cleveland, Ohio and stayed several days with their son, Matt, Irene and their three Australian Cattle dogs. Two of the dogs, Saffron & Sophie are in obstacle course competitions. Skylar is still in puppy training. They next drove to Leo, Ohio to see the 700 year old Leo Petroglyphs State Memorial and Walking Trail. Near the city of Peebles, Ohio they walked the trail of Serpent Mound - an ancient Native American Ceremonial structure. The largest serpent effigy in the world. It is on the edge of a Meteor Crater that is 1,000 years old. They spent the night in Evansville, IN, then went to visit Tom & Jan Bootz. They gave Tom his 1 st place DSR Champion chair and his Workers Choice chair from MAM. Charlie & Sharlene had a wonderful visit with them in their beautiful home on the lake. Then off to Texas for Christmas at Sharlene s cousin Diana and her family in Allen. Grandsons, Hayden & Hunter Smith came from Hughes Springs, TX and stayed a few days. Returning to Nevada, MO to take Allene, Sharlene s mother home, they enjoyed another Christmas with Sharlene s niece, Melody and family in Nevada. New Years Day was not as far to travel, as they went to Stilwell, KS for a New Years dinner with Charlie & Norma Williams. Mom talked to Jennifer Grimm in December She was looking for permanent numbers to give her husband, Jamie for Christmas. She told me that they have a 12 year old daughter, Sydney and twins, a boy and a girl. Griffin Grimm (son) was born October 1, 2012 and weighed 5 lbs, 9 oz and London Grimm (daughter) was born on October 1, 2012 and weighed 4 lbs, 6 oz. Whoopie, the rumors are all correct. Charlie & Norma (Mom) Williams have officially retired as of December 31, We have sold the 2701 West 47 th Street property and will turn it over to the new owners on March 12, The shop is now closed but we will be here several more weeks packing & moving. Most of the machines etc will be moved to the new garage in Stilwell, KS so Charlie can restore his Triumph TR4. The Westwood property will become Lulu s Asian Bistro. You might say it is going from grease to grease. Our condolence to Val Marker and her family on the death of her husband, Doug Marker. Doug passed away on December 23, 2013 in Fort Myers, FL. Doug and Valerie (Anderson) met at a party at the home of Bill & Dottie Johnson several years ago. Doug was a former Kansas City Region member. Our condolence to the Doug and Sonja Hitchcock family. On January 1, 2014 Doug s sister, Sarah Susan Hitchcock Knowles passed away. Sarah was 43 years old and is survived by a daughter, her parents, brother Doug, a sister Megan, nieces Amber & Jana and nephews Jordan & Sam. Our condolence to Chris & Mark Funk and their families on the death of their mother, Martha L. Funk. Martha was 90 years old and lived in Independence, MO. She leaves a daughter, 3 sons, 5 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. don t look back 14 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA
