Stay Tuned to our Checkpoint Channel. The new 2014 Race schedule for all groups is coming your way! Words from Chris, our RE: First I would like to thank the members for giving me the opportunity to lead the club. I m looking forward to working with the board to find ways to bring our members out to new events and to bring in new members. Some events I would like to see are: Gimmick Rallys; Economy Runs; Car Shows; More Social Events like we did for the F-1 race and more post event gatherings (solo 2, rally cross, racing) where we can get to know our members and meet new ones! I would also like to remind everyone of the awards banquet and the Mid-Div convention in Springfield. Let s see if we can get a record number at the awards banquet at the ALP in Overland Park, KS on 75th St. Chris Kern KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA 3

Greetings from the National Office My name is Chris Berg. I am a Public Relations Coordinator at the SCCA National office, but more importantly my wife and I are members of the Kansas City Region of the SCCA. I have been working at SCCA since February of this year, and I can honestly say it has been a great experience. The employees and general membership are some of the most dedicated people I have seen in a membership-based organization. I plan to have a recurring spot in Checkpoint to make the region membership aware of some of the things going on within the Club, as a whole. As many of you may know, the business of motorsports is a year-round one. During the warm summer months, we get to enjoy time with family and friends at the various events we attend, whether it s Solo, Club Racing, RallyCross, Road Rally, or Pro Racing. However it s the work that gets put in during the coldest days of the year that allow each of us to enjoy our passions of competition and the automobile. With that in mind, things remain the same here at the SCCA National Office in Topeka, Kan. Each of our dedicated staff members are working hard to gets the multitude of details sorted out for the upcoming season, which starts this month with the opening event for the U.S. Majors Tour in the Eastern Conference. The first race is slated for the first weekend in January at Sebring, with the second event the following weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway in Jupiter, Fla. Aside from preparations for 2014, there has also been some change in the office. The departure of Jeff Dahnert as the president and CEO of SCCA means there will be new leadership in the big office of the national building. Lisa Noble, the former Area 6 director and chairman of the SCCA Board of Directors, has stepped in as the interim office holder until a new candidate is named. At this point, the search committee is accepting and reviewing resumes through January 15, 2014, with the hope of naming a new president/ceo soon afterward. New leadership inevitably leads to changes in the way things have been done in the past. Noble, as a Club member since 1971 and having served on the SCCA Board of Directors since 2008, has done more than keep the seat warm for the next president/ceo. She has been instrumental in working to improve office-wide workflow in addition to promoting better communications between the five different areas of competition. The end goal is to foster a better working relationship between the national office, the regions and the Club membership, as a whole. Change will also be coming to SCCA s Board of Directors. Three new members were elected to serve on the board, in addition to one incumbent, to put in their customary three-year term. With Lisa Noble s second term coming to an end, we have a new Director in Area 6 in racer Peter Zekert. With some new blood, and new ideas to guide them, there may be some changes in the way things are done in our member-run Club. Looking at the organization as a whole, it is fairly easy to say that change will be the key word for SCCA in 2014 and beyond. A changing economic landscape means that all companies, including those in the motorsports industry, must figure out ways to do more with less by still being able to serve our customers, in this case our members, better while maximizing our resources to make sure the bottom line is still in the black. It s important for SCCA Inc. and every single SCCA Region. Most importantly, we need to do this and have FUN at the same time. That s a recipe for Region success. Stay safe, and we ll see you at the track. 4 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA

Remember When. Submitted by Sharlene Smith and Norma Williams The Miniature Monte Rallye was held on January 19, The starting point was the Nu-Way Drivein at the corner of Main Street & Linwood Boulevard, where food and fuel were available. Entry fees were $2.00 for members and $3.00 for guests. The first competitor left at 10:00am and thereafter cars started at one minute intervals. The course was divided into three sections - 1. Route card leading to various check points. 2. Modified Eight Clubs section with check points given on a marked map. 3. Regularity run with a secret time control. AVERAGE for this will be 30 M.P.H. During one of the sections there will be a short and simple driving test, the marks from which will only be used Hal Stipe lines up the cars for the start of the rallye. in case of a tie on the road section. All routes were over well traveled roads of a non-damaging nature. All time controls and check points were by the side of the road and clearly marked. The following equipment must be carried on each car: tow rope, First Aid Kit and two flares. The finish was at the Southeast Community Center, 3601 E 63 rd where a buffet dinner for a $1.00 per person was served. The first car was due to arrive at approximately 6:30pm. Notes - Equipment required: a sharp pencil, an accurate watch, preferably a stop-watch. There will be no official lunch stop so competitor should carry sandwiches, thermos, etc. In order to allow time for scrutineering etc., competition should arrive a half-hour before the start. Late arrival at the start will be penalized the same amount as late arrival at a control. 6 Everyone had a final check with the official clock. In picture, #1 was Robin 6 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA The following article is copied from the Check Point newsletter of the Kansas City Region Sports Car Club of America - Volume l, Number 1 - dated January The Kansas City Region greets 1958 with its most successful Rallye - The Miniature Monte! Unanimously voted the most successful local event in our history, the Miniature Monte run January 19 was miniature in name only. Chairman of the event, and one man organizer, was Robin Benson, who treated us to a small sample of what he casually described as a true rallye - No gimmicks - no electronic gadgets required! 65 entries were received and 60 cars left the Benson & #2 was George Butterfield. starting line at the stroke of 10 on a gloomy January Sunday. An overcast sky and biting northeast wind gave promise later ful-filled of trouble ahead for 120 hardy souls who stuck their respective feet into the firewalls of 60 beautiful cars when Frank Monahan, eyes glued to the official clock, gave them the word. 10½ hours later the last car crossed the finish line; 3 hours late perhaps, but rightfully proud of finishing. For this was a rallye to separate the men from the boys and cause strong men to quake! Overall winner was Arthur (Fangio) Bunker, driving as a team with John Works, in a Porsche. Winner of the Ladies Class was Grace Harris, with navigator Jerri Cobb, internationally known aviatrix and world record holder. Both girls were driving their first rallye. A further handicap was their car - one of the more clumsy examples of Detroit engineering. Top hand in the Guest Class was H. Gariety, in an MGA. Trophy awards will be made at the regular meeting Tuesday, February 4. An excellent series of photos of the Rallye will be available for purchase. As usual the old guard quietly, efficiently and thoroughly performed the countless tasks that made the rallye a successful event. Particular credit goes to Stanley Birdsall who handled things so well at the St Joseph control. Bob Schley kneeling and Ed Hudson At St Joe occurred the drivers test. Art Bunker stood watching Fred Baxter, Paul Chestnutt and Grace Harris bend three Cadillacs pretzel like between the narrow pylons of a chicane. Said Art, If I wasn t seeing it, I d NEVER believe it!

Pole Position- SCCA Kansas City Region's Bill Correll (reprinted with permission) August 27, 2013 by Jennifer Ghidinelli Bill Correll from the SCCA Kansas City Region SOLO program has some of the most creative registration forms we ve seen here at MotorsportReg. He takes full advantage of all the tools and features we offer and uses them in ways that we hadn t even thought of. He got his start in autocross in the late 60 s and mid 70 s and then took some time off to go back to college along with working a full time job with Ford Motor Company. In 1999 he bought a new Mustang Cobra and in 2000 attended the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving 4 day Grand Prix Road Race School. Later that year he got back into autocross and retired from Ford in He was the region's Solo Chair from 2007 through 2009 and a member of the region s Solo Advisory Committee, as chair, from 2007 through He was also the Chief of Registration for solo from 2008 through 2011 and Chief of Waivers in He has since KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA 7

stepped down as the Chief of Registration and lets someone else handle the actual onsite parts of registration but keeps the MSR event set up piece of the process. We recently chatted with him about his club and those incredible registration forms he creates. MSR: SCCA Kansas City Region runs SOLO events, rally cross and a few road rallies and races. What are the highlights of your season? Bill: For the solo group the highlight of the season is our "Halloweenie" autocross event. The club furnishes hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks. The entrants and their guests bring chips, desert, etc. Many of the people wear costumes and decorate their cars. We give out prizes for people and car costumes and also collect money for a local charity. After the event, we donate the leftover food and drinks to a church or community food pantry or kitchen. MSR: What lessons have you learned about running events? Bill: Running an event is a total team effort. One of the things that is easy to forget is that all of the team members are volunteers. And they re all trying their best to make the event the best possible for the entrants. Communication is key, and unfortunately is the one thing that easily breaks down. MSR: What kind of event promotion have you done that has been successful? Bill: Probably the best promotion is the blaster in MSR. I use it to send out the initial registration open notice, a couple of reminder notices, and then the run/work info for each event. We also have a bulletin board that has a lot of info populated by members of the region. MSR: What are some of the challenges you re facing? Bill: The same as most autocross groups, finding and keeping a place to run. MSR: How has MSR helped make your events easier to organize and manage? Bill: MSR has helped a lot. From the ability to load the registrations into the T&S system to the ability to let people prepay, if they want to. We have a special line at our events for those that prepay for an event and it is always enjoyable to see how fast they can check in and get their registration/tech card. MSR: How are you using MSR in creative and interesting ways? Bill: I'm not sure how unique it is but we've worked hard at using packages to allow the entrants to select their run heats and their work heat/position. It was part of our old custom written system and MSR was the only motorsport registration service that would let us mimic that at all. MSR side note - His approach is actually very unique. For example, Bill uses validation rules to enforce a few worker positions that require credentials, like a safety steward where not just anybody can sign up for it. It s very clever. He has more validation rules per square inch than any other organization using MotorsportReg! MSR: Why do you keep doing what you re doing? What motivates you? Bill: Why do I keep doing this? Sometimes I wonder that myself. I think that it is to support the club that has provided me with a place to play. If I can make it so that it is easier for entrants to preregister, maybe we can have a better idea of what work positions are filled before the event, and that makes it easier for our event registrar and chief of workers to do their jobs, especially with handling the walk up registrations. Also that means that the whole event runs smoother and if the event runs smoother perhaps we get more people to show up. MSR: Thanks for your time Bill! Bill: You re welcome. 8 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA

Driven to succeed: Professor participates in local motorsport events (reprinted with permission) Story and photos by Stephen Cook Patterson competes in a SCCA rallycross race on Nov. 3. These events are held on dirt, instead of pavement. Not content to just sit quietly and let life pass him by, science professor, Doug Patterson enthusiastically enjoys both his time in the classroom and on the track. Patterson has been at the college since 1993 and teaches astronomy and physics courses. In addition to teaching his classes, Patterson also spends time doing research for Fundamental Technologies, LLC. As a part of the group, Patterson writes software that can analyze data collected from outer space so it can be understood and used practically. Patterson is compensated for his work with the group. It s my racing money, Patterson said. Teaching pays the bills and pays the rent and research pays for the fun. Originally, he thought he would only teach at the college for a little bit and then move on to another institution. Instead, he compared where he was already to where he wanted to be. Patterson has a Master s degree from Ball State University and received his Ph.D from KU in This is it, this is the Disneyland of academic positions, Patterson said. I have a community of like-minded pedagogics, people who value the craft of teaching and learning. Patterson believes in learning through working hands-on in the classroom. The ideal thing is to get one s hands dirty, I try to bring in as much of the real science world as I possibly can, not the glossy stuff in the textbooks, Patterson said. I prefer to teach science by having them do science. His interest in the field began at an early age. As a kid I was always fascinated by space and science and rocketships and all that, Patterson said. I mean what are the two coolest things ever? Rocket ships and race cars, right? In high school, Patterson at first thought he was going to become a commercial artist. Then, he took a physics class and it all changed. However, Patterson still is an active photographer, running Patterson Prints LLC with his wife as well as writing and taking photos for OpenPaddock.net, a website covering motorsport. Patterson began contributing to the site in early 2009, shortly after really getting back into photography in Now he is able to attend and cover events with media credentials. As with science, Patterson has also been interested in motorsports since a young age. I was born in Indiana, therefore I m a motorsports fan, Patterson said. Motorsports, basketball and corn; those are your three loves in Indiana. Now Patterson is a member of the local Sports Car Club of America group and he races in various events throughout the year. Patterson said he first went out to an SCCA solo event to take photos for OpenPaddock and then realized how awesome the event was. One of the things that also got Patterson to come back was when somebody asked if he was selling prints. KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA 9

Of course that lure of the almighty dollar got me back out, right?, Patterson said. Plus, it was a super cool event and I really enjoyed being out there and the people were amazing. Last year Patterson went ahead and became a member of the local SCCA club. So far, Patterson has competed in around 20 events with his Ford Focus SVT. Patterson said his favorite cars are ones that helped shape automotive history through engineering and innovation, such as the Ford GT40 or the Tyrrell Project 34 F1 car. I like those cars that showed engineering creativity, Patterson said. This is something I try to share with my students: is that scientists and engineers, we are creative people, we have to be to come up with some of the crazy ways that we find out how the universe works, who builds something like the space shuttle in all of its complexity without being creative? In addition to his interests in science, photography and motorsports, Patterson is also an anime fan and is the faculty advisor for the anime club. Paul Decelles, professor of science, first met Patterson in 1993, the two formed a good friendship that has persisted ever since. From what I ve seen he s really enthusiastic about what he does and he inspires that in other people, Decelles said. So even though I m not particularly interested in motorsports, for example, I get interested from hearing him talk about it and that sort of thing. Joe Tasler, regional executive for the Kansas city region SCCA has known Patterson for about three years and has seen him participate in a number of events. He also appreciates the photography and website work he does for the club. He s a real enthusiastic guy, he steps up and does a lot of work, Tasler said. Doug s always there to help. Patterson said his favorite part about being involved with the Kansas City Region SCCA group is the people. The same is true about science, Patterson said. Whether it s talking about motorsports or whether it s talking about science and the history of science it s the people s stories, the stories behind what was going on. [ ] It s always the people that make stories interesting. Contact Stephen Cook, editor-in-chief, at scook35@jccc.edu. 10 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA

Local Celebrity Jeff Bartz So as many of you already know, I have a hard time saying no when asked to help out with something. Little did I know, this particular request would be so much fun. SCCA National was looking for someone to help with a marketing opportunity. The idea was simple. Create an ad that shows off your car and the reason you have the number you ve chosen to race with. Mine was a good story so I went ahead and volunteered. After all, how many people are born on their brother s birthday, on the same day and in the same hospital as their cousin, which happened to fall on Easter that year? Needless to say, SCCA National liked it too and they selected me to help them out. I quickly learned that this ad was going to run in Sportscar Magazine. I was pretty stoked. So we set up the time for the photo shoot at a local studio here in Kansas City. I got the car all waxed up and even drove to Topeka ahead of time to get new sponsor decals so that the car would look official. The photo shoot went great. It s pretty amazing to see how they do these types of ads. I was told it would take about four hours to do the shoot. I would have never guessed that of that four hours, they really only needed me for about one. The rest of the time was spent on photographing the car. At least their priorities are in order! After the shoot, I was told it would be in the upcoming issue of Sportscar. What I didn t realize is that it was going to be in Racer and Grassroots Motorsports Magazines too! Needless to say, I had a blast doing this and am very pleased with the results. A big thank you to Jeff Madden and his team at Trozzolo Communications Group, photographer James Meierotto, and SCCA National for allowing me to be a part of this cool idea. Cresson is about 14 miles SW of Fort Worth. The facility is a Country Club type track, with shop condos and garages. His new shop is about 800 feet from the pit lane for the track. The actual track can be run in three configurations, 1.3 mi, 1.7 mi and 3.1 mi with an elevation change of about 75 feet. Mirl said he has 10 guest sessions per month, so he has invited us to come and test, if we are on the way to a race in Texas. He will remain a KCR member. Mom, received a very nice from Jim Schroeder, who has been a member of the KCR for 14 years. Jim said his wife, Linda passed away in September after a four year battle with cancer. In February 2014 they would have been married for 50 years. Jim said Linda never said so, but he knew she held her breath every time he climbed into his race car. Years back, he did Porsche Club Racing but never took the track at an SCCA event. He 12 KANSAS CITY REGION SCCA

enjoyed going to the runoffs when they were at Heartland Park. Bill Rinke wrote to Mom, that since he moved to the Ozarks in 2001, he has been appalled at the number of fatal accidents involving teenagers. He was hoping to start a driver school in the Branson area when they announced a road course would be built there but the developer went bankrupt so no road course. Then visiting with Linda Duncan he felt the Tire Rack Teen Street Survival School would be a great benefit in the Ozark area. So he suggested to the Ozark Mountain Region (OMR) board that they conduct the school. The first OMR Teen Street Survival School was held in Ozark, MO at the Ducks baseball stadium parking area. The event was held on a blustery day but there were 18 students that took the course. Since Bill is a member of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, he was able to have the Missouri Highway Patrol bring their roll over car, their seat belt convincer and some overgrown go karts that people could drive with goggles on that simulated intoxication. The school was a great success and it is hoped that it can be repeated a couple of times next year. Dave and Elisabeth Vincent are new grandparents! The cars are secure, stay clean and shopping is comfortable year round. They have three ASE Certified Technicians on staff to properly prepare the inventory for retail sale. Nothing gets offered for sale until it is really ready! The Buyers Agent and Consignment Sales programs are catching on. People are enjoying the hassle free purchasing process Britt is able to facilitate and they especially like having their sacred consigned toy displayed safely indoors. You can reach Britt at Cheryl and Isabella (5 years old) Williams recently spent a weekend in Chicago at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. When arriving, the Captain announced they would soon be landing and he wanted to tell Bella to have a good weekend in Chicago shopping with her mother. Bella was invited to make sugar cookies with the Hotel Pastry Chef in the kitchen, they spent 1 day shopping at the American Girl Store, they visited the Navy Pier, had lunch at the Bubba Gump Scrimp Company Restaurant and attended the Toy & Game Convention, where they say Darth Vader.
