2 I just wanted to take this time to welcome each of you to the Lone Star Performance Buick Club. This year is expected to be full of surprises. There will be a club race event and car show nearly each month for David Newton is our new Vice President this year, and; I know that he will continue to do a great job for us all. Mark Metdker is our new Race Director. He has been working closely with Redline Raceway to make sure that all our events run as smooth as possible. Robert Davidson is our Show Director and will continue to serve the club well this year. Danny Oviedo is also continuing to volunteer his time to keep our website updated. I believe that we would all agree that he has made great strides to the improvement of our online presence. Carl Brimer has agreed continue his newsletter duties in spite of his unremitting schedule this year. I know that he will also continue doing a great job. Morgan Farrington has been re-elected as our Secretary and Treasurer. He also has donated a lot of time out of his busy schedule to insure that the club s finances are in good fiscal shape. Patrick Smith is our club s new Special Events Director, and; he has plans for some fun outings this year. With that all being said, I know that this will be a fun and successful year for all. This newsletter will be the last one for everybody who has not renewed their membership for Unfortunately, the expenses are too overwhelming to continue to send this material to those who do not support LSPBC. The many benefits of membership to the LSPBC greatly outweigh the small annual membership fee. Take some time to look at what we have planned for everyone this year! In conclusion, I know that many of you have pretty hectic schedules to keep, however; the officers of this organization are all volunteers and would greatly appreciate any additional help at the car shows, racing events, news articles and etc. Thank you to everyone who has helped directly and indirectly to make 2004 the best year yet! There is a new point system for both our shows at Chuck s and our races at Redline. We have planned to have another Speedzone event, Club Picnic, Christmas Party, as well as a bowling party sometime around mid-summer. We are also looking into a possible group dyno event somewhere. We are open to your thoughts and suggestions. One last thing. I also want to say thanks and congratulations to our new staff this year. 3 Special Report: The Brand X Bash at Temple Academy Dragway By Phil Green Days before the event there were many concerns if the 2 nd Annual Lone Star Brand X Bash would be held. The weather was shifting and was becoming very unpredictable. One moment the chance of precipitation was 30%, and then it would go to 20%. At this point I was thinking great! This stuff is going to clear. I woke up the next morning with the anticipation of a great weather forecast and I soon became aware that my 20% had now increased to a 50% chance of rain. I received numerous calls throughout the day. People were concerned if they should buy race gas, or to get their trailer because of the weather. All I could say was watch the weather, as it is the only variable that is standing in our way. As Friday approached, a massive storm came slowly from the southwest. Then I heard that the weather had accelerated. By 5pm Friday night all the rain blew through. At this point I started to make calls after the 50% backed down to a 20% chance of rain. That next morning several convoys from Houston, DFW and Austin were on their way to Temple Academy Dragway. Soon after I arrived, the Houston group found their way and we started to organize parking. Just as soon as they were starting to park, the DFW group was right in line behind the Houston group. We could have not timed this any better. As the vehicles were parking, the BBQ grill was being fired up and the food was being prepared. Shirts were set out so that people at the event could purchase and share their camaraderie for the event. Soon after, there were hamburgers and hotdogs in many people s hands with many people meeting new friends and reuniting with old friends. Then there was the drivers meeting. Rick Kinworthy (LSPBC Director), David Newton (LSPBC ASST. Director), Bill Stoneberg (BCA Houston director), and myself were there to brief all in attendance. We welcomed all our Buick family. We spoke of past rivalries, sponsors, additional events, and trying to keep away from other Buick s during the race so that we could actually have a bash. After the Drivers meeting was held, all the cars were lined up to be teched in to race and for photo s of all the Buick s. While in the tech line, we were informed that we could have our own race since we were so large of a group. I was asked if that was what we wanted. My resounding answer was NO!. We came to race the X brands, everyone agreed. With everything under way people began running test and tune to dial in their cars. The event was really beginning to take shape. The sun came out, everyone was full from the feast and racing soon would begin. Soon after, everyone dialed in his or her cars and the X bash began. The racing started off with a track advisory mentioning courtesy staging and how the racers would be chosen from the four lanes all the drivers were lined up in. A few Buick s lined up in the staging lanes. Two GN s ran perfect times on their dial in and the winner was determined by how well they cut the light at the top of the track. I saw the time slips and said WOW!. I knew a good event would continue to take shape. As the race continued and the X brands were slowly ousted, unfortunately we had some losses ourselves. As the races continued, the rounds were slowly taking our Buick s out. In the quarter-final round we still had 4 cars out of the 10 remaining. Not to bad. Then the cards were drawn and 2 Buicks would have to race one another. One lost prior so this would leave us down to 2 Buicks left. Shortly after, one of those Buicks also lost. 2nd place had to be determined by deciding which of the 3 had the best reaction time. The second place winner was Ed Hollin from Houston and he received $100 for his second place win. Danny Oviedo took the first place spot and received $200 from the event. There were 3 other cars to fight off. Danny drew a mid 70 s nova and once again put another x brand on the trailer. Danny made the final round and his opponent was a first generation Camaro. The Camaro was tubbed and did not really fit the bill as a streetcar but it had vintage tags so it must have been a streetcar according to the track. Danny lined up at the lights. As the lights come down Danny leaves and shortly after the Camaro leaves. Danny goes through the lights and would lose the race because he broke out. However, Danny would receive another $200 for his runner-up finish from Temple Academy Dragway sending him home $400 richer. Finally, I want to personally thank everyone who attended and everyone who assisted in one fashion or another. Whether you were the assistant who helped BBQ or sold shirts to support the race, all of you are great Buick people. 5 LSPBC 2004 Show Report A beautiful Conquest with a Buick turbo 6 was on display Some rarely seen classics Buick s were also on display I have been a car nut all my life. I joined LSPBC at the beginning of 2002, mostly to meet other Buick owners and to get information about the cars (think speed). I attended my first show at Chuck s in April 2002, just to see all the great looking cars. After that show, I began to help with the registration and soon I was involved with the vote counting. I enjoyed working with David Newton, Michael McCaffrey and everyone else by just helping out where ever I could. During the year we probably averaged about 50 to 60 cars per show. As most of you already know, in 2003 we managed to bring out many more cars each show. In the first Chuck s show we had about 75 cars. Our highest attendance at Chuck s was 88 cars. The result of everyone s hard work in 2003 was a very good year financially for the club. David and Michael did an outstanding job and they deserve all the thanks we can give them. Under their leadership, our reputation for putting on a quality show has grown. As the year progressed we continually heard from entrants about what a good time they had and what good shows the LSPBC puts on. We want to build on the efforts of everyone from last year and try to make this year an even bigger success. We have made some changes in the way the LSPBC class will be judged this year. In the past, each member could win first place once a year per vehicle. The vote tallying for these awards has not changed, but; the club has instituted a points system. Each time you enter a show you will get 10 points. For each first place vote you get you will receive another point. The points will be tallied each month and added to the yearly total for each entrant. At the Christmas party, the leader in the points will be awarded a personalized plaque from the club and a $ cash prize for the Top Show Car of the 2004 season! We think that the point system will put the excitement back in the shows for those lucky ones who win their first place trophy early in the season. We also think that this system will keep the LSPBC monthly attendance higher and maintain interest in the full show season. Remember, the money earned at the shows is what generates the income for cash at the races, the Speed Zone event and all of the other special events held during the year. With your help, we can make the LSPBC 2004 car show season the best ever. So, let s keep supporting our club and try to keep it one of the premier car clubs in the Metroplex. Morgan Farrington, CPA LSPBC Treasurer / Secretary 2003 GMHTP Show The GMHTP show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison, Texas highlighted the GM High Tech Performance Magazine visit to the area. As those of us that were there know, our club participation really overwhelmed the entire show! We had a row of approximately Turbo Regals, including Mike Metdker s TTA and Chris Bischof s unique Pontiac Hybrid with a 560CI Chevy crate engine. Also, we were able to meet at length with Rick Jensen, editor of GM High Tech Performance Magazine. He also took some pictures of our impressive line of cars. Rick admitted that he was partial to the Turbo Regals as he has owned his for the last eleven years (87 Turbo T, Black/Chrome). What a fine time and fine show of force from our great group of people and cars! I wish all of you could have been there and enjoyed that moment, but really, it s been that way all year long! What an impressive group you fellow club members are! Congratulations to all of the winners from our club. 9 Big Daddy s Cool Car Show Ok LSPBC folks, here is another feather in our cap! If you were not aware, the town of Addison puts on a huge car show every summer. This year they have contacted our club (thanks to LSPBC member Mark Metdker) about cohosting their event this year. This is a great opportunity for our club. I believe that this puts us right up there with the best in the country! We need eight volunteers to help run the show (registration, giveaways, 50/50, parking and etc). The club will earn $5.00 per entry. They are expecting maybe 200 cars with room for as much as 700. So this is a great way to help pay for our events through the year. We also need as many Buicks as possible to attend. We would like to see at least 30 Buicks. Let s show them why they picked our club. There will be live music, door prizes, awards and multiple drawings all day. Also the town of Addison has arranged for 30 commercials to be aired on 92.5 KZPS. 11 Racing Events Fast Facts 1. Redline Raceway 2nd weekends are March through October. 2. Monthly club payout: 1st = $125.00, 2nd = $75.00, Semis = $50.00 each 3. 12 Technically Speaking The following articles have been reprinted with the permission from the GSX-tra publication and the Buick GS Club of America Thoughts In Choosing A Torque Converter By Richard Lasseter Because all Buick street or street/strip engines are low RPM torquers, a too-loose converter will use up a lot of engine RPM to gain nothing. Whether it be a GS or TR, we always recommend efficient converters at some expense in stall speed. This is true even with a lock-up converter as in the case of the Turbo Regals. Sure the lock-up feature is designed to be super efficient at cruise, but; for the best performance you also need good efficiency and torque multiplication when the converter is in acceleration mode, even before lock-up occurs. Otherwise the converter will be slipping too much. If you ve called us about torque converter selection, you hear us harp on converter efficiency all the time. Otherwise, Buick torque will drive right through a relatively loose converter and the car just won t pull like it should due to inefficient coupling. Even on non lock-up TR converters, recent advances have been made to address this efficiency problem. For example, Art Carr s (the real Art Carr) 9 converter for the TR is a definitely improved version over the earlier models. We verified this in testing on Rod Taylor s 11-teen 122 mph GN at last year s Nationals. Art s latest 9 converter is good for up to 2 mph in the quarter mile over his earlier 9 model. Torque converter efficiency is talked about a lot. It s really a very simple concept, but it s not so simple to measure. Basically torque converter efficiency is the ratio or percentage of the power on the output side compared to the input side. The RPM at which the impeller spins (input) compared to the RPM of the turbine (output) is referred to as speed ratio. At the converter stall speed this ratio is zero because output speed is zero. At this point, all engine power is being turned into heat inside of the transmission and torque converter. This is why torque power braking a TR at stall speed for any length of time can be so detrimental to drivetrain parts! Tremendous heat is generated. You will have maximum efficiency when the speed of the impeller and turbine of the converter are spinning at equal RPM. This is why lock-up converters are often desired, particularly for hi-way driving. Nearly all engine power is being transferred to the rear wheels for optimum fuel mileage. On big block V-8 street and street/strip applications, we always shoot for maximum coupling efficiency between impeller and turbine in order to give you the best second and third gear pull. The best (and most expensive) converters for a 455 V-8 combine the lighter weight of a 9-11 unit with maximum coupling efficiency. This way you ll get better throttle response, excellent transfer of engine power in second and third gear (for a good top end charge), better fuel mileage and less transmission heat. That s all good stuff! Sometimes higher stall, slightly less efficient converters will actually give more mph in a drag strip scenario only. This is because they accelerate the car harder enough off the line (especially if slicks are used) through first gear and the bottom of second gear that you ll make more mph even though you will have less efficiency through the last half of the quarter mile. This is exactly why higher stall 9-10 converters show their benefit on the dragstrip but from a good roll are not necessarily the best way to go for street encounters where coupling efficiency then becomes so important. GSX-tra May/June 2003 Proper Lifter Preload By Richard Lasseter Some of the newsstand auto magazines carry some good tech articles, if you know how to pick and choose them. If there is no obvious agenda, like where a big advertiser s products are being evaluated (and naturally, they always work great), then the article can often be of use. Back in our March/April 2001 issue, we reported on performance results of our prototype X-pipe GS exhaust system. Then two months later in the June 2001 issue of Hot Rod magazine, a four page article explained how great a properly designed 3 X-pipe system worked with accompanying dyno and track tests. This backed up our previously reported power gains we published in the GSX-tra. For many years we ve extolled the virtues of blueprinting your valvetrain with precise lifter / pushrod preload. This can be done most inexpensively with adjustable pushrods. We ve said time and time again that on many cam swaps, the stock length pushrods push the lifter cups too far into the lifter. This can limit how well the engine will rev as well as make noise and hurt horsepower. often a camshaft is blamed when the real culprit is improper push-rod preload. We ve seen this more than once! The September 2002 issue of Car Craft carried an excellent no agenda article on this, and this article verified everything we ve been saying for years. Again, we told you so! If you want to promote one cam lobe design or brand over another and show proof on the dyno, just overly preload the lifters on the cam you re trying to denigrate and you can easily taint the results without even having to juggle dyno correction factors. All of this is some of the agenda that can easily be played on the unwary. So keep this in mind. Putting in excessive lifter preload is a great way to float some valves or crash some lifters. The Car Craft test engine lost 400 RPM between a.150 preload and a.025 (recommended) preload. Naturally, power was also affected. On page 76 of the Car Craft article, it was found that the best results were obtained with.025 of lifter preload. This is why we have always recommended from 1/2 to 1 full turn out from zero lash when adjusting pushrods. This puts you right where you need to be as far as lifter preload. Join the LSPBC Today!
