1 , PORSCHE SLIPSTREAM Porsche Club of America, MaverickFRgion Inc,,No1,,Vol.8 No. 11 President: Tom Clayton, 1313 Briarwood Blvd., Arlington, Texas Vice President: Jack Walker, 6565 Axton Lane, Dallas, Texas Treasurer: Dick Selcer, 3817 Branch Rd., Ft. Worth, Texas Secretary: Mrs. J.R. (Linda) Sidwell, 1847 Dale Cove, Carrollton, Texas Roger Chaney, 3012 Clary Ave., Ft. Worth, Texas Technical Chairman: Activities Chairman: Don Muncy, 6028 Spring Glen Dr., Dallas, Texas Don Spaulding, Box 12474, Ft. Worth, Texas Program Chairman: Newsletter Editors: Cheryl and Bob Barker, 1705 Spring Lake Dr., Arlington, Texas THE PREZ SEZ by Tom Clayton The hills were alive with the sound of music, if of course your concept of music includes the rasp of air cooled engines. While the recently held treffin to Oklahoma fell somewhat short of a record in attendance in terms of ethusiasm, enjoyment, and fall colors it was a blue ribbon event. This year the Kansas City Region joined our group so that with Wichita, War Bonnet and Maverick we had four regions represented for somewhat of a mini parade. The weatherman cooperated admirably and gave us a frost early enough to turn the local foliage into a riot of beautiful colors. For the weekend he gave us sunny warm weather for the concours on Saturday and then came through with a light drizzel on Sunday to make the autocross interesting. The facilities at Fountainhead Lodge were outstanding. Everything from out own parking lot to the party room with a panoramic view of the lake was well coordinated and suited the occasion to a tee. The food was exceptional, better even than last year. Enthusiasm ran high for the events. We may, in fact, have to tag the concours as an annual Simm vs. House grudge match. For the second year both cars were at the top of the 900 series class and both in impeccable condition. Using the parade guidelines as the basis for scoring, the class Simm's scored within four points of a perfect score for first red sparkling and a first overall. Their entry was just ahead of the and first 356 coupe of Frank and Dottie Hand which placed second overall three top out the in 356 series. George House's 900 series coupe rounded overall and took a solid second in class behind the Simm car. The predicted economy run obviously had a few people up doing their homework in advance. The difference between first and second was by calculations to the third decimal place. The Akimoto's coming within of their actual milage for 1st, just slightly better than the Purtell's error for second place, Not bad, huh?.n
2 PREZ SEZ cont. The mini autocross featured almost 100 per cent participation with many of the gals running for the first time. Although the course was tight, the 900's came on strong for best time with Charlie Davis taking home best time, followed by Tom Purtell only 0.5 sec behind. In the ladies class Jan Simm came charging through to duplicate the first she took at last years event. Second was Jane Purtell and third went to Mrs. Munson. Modesty prohibits me from telling you that I picked up a first in the 356 class in a borrowed car (thanks to Roger), second went to the Grey Eagle (Dick Selcer) and third to Roger Scogin, During the Saturday afternoon concours Roger Chaney, National Tech Chairman held a tech session and fielded tech and maintenance questions from a large group of participants. As he frequently does, Roger managed to pull enough parts from his "bag of tricks" for about half a car. This time everyone else got into the swing of things and parts began appearing from everywhere, both new, used and inbetween. It was quite a collection before the wind up, but what better way is there to learn more about your Porsche. The Saturday night banquet and party were up to their usual par excellance for Porsche gatherings. The meal was great and the party swung far into the night. A special highlight of the party was provided by the impromptu combo of Grey Eagle Selcer from Maverick Region and Al Williams of War Bonnet. With Dick on uke and Al on the eight string electric mandolin, the "singin" ranged from the oldies to the new generation rock. A really, really good time was had by all. A luncheon and awards presentation wound things up on Sunday afternoon all too soon for most. May I suggest that if you missed the weekend, you missed what P.C.A. is all about, good times and good company with a lot If you did miss the scene this time of competition thrown in for spice. start planning now, better gall. around, it will be back next OCTOBER TECH QUIZ ANSWERS by Roger Chaney 356 types 519 (split case) and 644 and 716 (tunnel cases) type (52% to 59% on duelmeters so calibrated) volt 912 left door forward post; right front luggage compartment frame under carpet true, 1571 "taxable" 0.1 mm = 0,0039 inch, 6 gallons approximately 34 inch (20 mm) left rear cylinder approximately 34 inch (20 mm) ( inch) 0.1 mm 16.4 on
