2 Sport Successes from the Autumn Welcome Millfield Sport continues to provide depth and breadth of sporting choice for all pupils. This is reflected in the Spring Term Showcase Calendar which highlights an extensive range of fixtures, tournaments and events coming up, whilst also recording the sports successes from the Autumn Term. David Faulkner Millfield Director of Sport Athletics Millfield enjoyed success at the Modern Biathlon GB Championships with the following team and individual results: Alexander Allen - 1st in U19 individual and Nicholas Laws - 1st in U15 individual. Nicholas Laws, Charlie Samouelle and Ben Ashton- Rigby - National U15 champions. Alexander Allen, Joseph Barton and Benjamin King - National U19 champions. Cricket Tom Moores was selected for the England U19 squad. Dance Upper Sixth pupil Lucy Matthews has successfully gained a place on the prestigious Ballet Cymru Associate Programme. Equestrian Millfield Equestrian enjoyed success at the NSEA Championships. Ellie Robbins placed 4th in the 1.10m Show Jumping final and Emma Manton placed 1st in the Prelim 18 Dressage final. Phoebe Locke was part of the Great Britain Pony European Eventing Squad and was awarded the title of Best 14-and-Under Rider in Great Britain by the European selectors at Brand Hall. Fencing Upper Sixth pupil Costanza Peretti won the British U20 Championship in Fencing (Foil) at only 17-years-old. Upper Sixth pupil Richard Bernstein reached the Sabre top-16 at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Scotland. Golf Jamie Li played in the final of The Telegraph Junior Golf Championship in Portugal where he tied for 4th place. Hockey U16 Girls and 1st XI teams won the County School Championships. Karting Year 10 pupil Lando Norris rounded off his outstanding karting career by making history as the youngest ever World Championship winner in October. Netball U16 and U14 teams became County Champions after winning their tournaments in October. The U19 team became County Champions in November too and all three teams progress to the Regionals, which are being held in January Rowing Freya Lockett and Helena Richman won silver medals at a Regional Rowing event in Double Sculls. The Girls first four placed 2nd in their Women s Elite Fours at Monkton Bluefriar s Head, beating University crews from Bath, Bristol and Exeter. Rugby The 1st XV won the 2014 St Joseph s College National Schools Rugby Festival with a recordequaling sixth win. The team was unbeaten following their seven matches across the two day tournament. They also won the inaugural RFU U18 Schools Champions Trophy at Allianz Park, beating Grammar School of Leeds in the final 31-24, at the end of November. Swimming Emma Cain has been selected to join the British Swimming World Class Podium Potential Programme for the 2014/15 swimming season. Lower Sixth pupils Muis Ahmad and Christian Nikkles have been selected to represent their native Brunei at the FINA World Short Course Championships in December. Swimmers also enjoyed success at the national finals of the English Schools Swimming Association Relay Competition, held at the London Aquatic Centre, coming away with seven wins from twelve events. Tennis Luke Hammond and Giles Hussey both won U18 Winter Regional Tours, plus Lower Sixth pupil Angus Bradshaw won the U18 Tennis Winter National Tour event during half term. Trampolining At the South West Schools Competition the U19 team of Ellie Lloyd, Celeste Sifontes, Lily Woodbridge and Lauren Boocock placed 1st, the U19 Girls novice team placed 2nd and the U14 Girls Intermediate group placed 2nd in the team event.

Including the first ever hosting of Modern Pentathlon GB Competition at Millfield. Following on from Pentathlon GB announcing that Millfield had been granted academy status for its past, present and future pentathletes, we are delighted that Pentathlon GB have asked us to host their winter ranking event series. This pays great tribute to the standard of sports facilities available at Millfield, as these are the first training events in the 2016 Olympic cycle for the British pentathletes. As well as Millfield athletes, there will be Olympic and world medal winners competing as they try to qualify for the pentathlon GB World Cup squad. 4 12-17 February 2015 Desert Springs and Millfield European Schools Golf Team Championships 2015 This coming February half-term sees the Desert Springs and Millfield European Schools Team Championships. It is an open event to all schools and we have had a good response with entries. Other schools joining Millfield are Loretto, Wellington, Bradfield, Reeds and Durham, giving a total of 19 teams of four players. The tournament is being played over three days - first two days 4BBB and the third and final round the best two gross scores from each team. Millfield are taking four teams of various levels. All are going to gain experience playing a challenging golf course under tournament conditions. 4-7 March 2015 Dance Show 7.00pm, Meyer Theatre / All welcome Free admission, early booking for tickets advised. Over one hundred pupils will be taking part in this celebration of dance. They will be performing a wide range of styles including Tap, Contemporary, Hip-hop, Street, Ballet and Modern. We look forward to having the opportunity to thrill you with a sparkling evening performance.

6 20 March 2015 Sports Captains Table 21 March 2015 Super Saturday of Sport pm, Gaskell Room / Invited pupils and guests only Special Guest: Kukri Sports Ambassador An educational and social opportunity for the Sports Captains to welcome a Kukri Sports Ambassador to share their sporting achievements and advice in a formal setting. These evenings often contain an activity workshop, Q&A session and a formal threecourse dinner hosted by Millfield s Director of Sport. 7 Sports Tours and Events The Sports department organises a mix of special sports events and tours for pupils in addition to pre-season activities each year. Three examples of current and new events are; India Tour 2014 Millfield Cricket (1st XI & U15) and Hockey (Boys 1st XI) An exciting and challenging tour to Northern India was completed during 8-20 December 2014, which was the first time that Millfield pupils have visited India for a sports tour and the first occasion for two sports to travel and compete abroad together. The impressive tour itinerary included fixtures at Chandigarth, Amritsar and Delhi in some world class stadiums, plus a programme of cultural experiences was enjoyed with visits to a Bat Factory (cricket), the Golden Temple, Taj Mahal and a Delhi sightseeing trip. Our Heads of Sport saw this tour as a fantastic sporting challenge and educational opportunity for the pupils; The unfamiliarity of both climate and pitches will test both their (players) skill and mental strength. Playing away from the comfort of the grounds they are used to, will further develop their cricket, character and resilience. Embrace it, learn from it and respect it. Shaun Matthews, Head Coach of Boys Hockey Millfield U14 Rugby Tour to Portugal March 2015 For the second year running, Year 9 pupils are invited on a rugby tour to Portugal taking place during the Easter holiday. This is a short tour that includes playing in an international tournament, the Rugby Youth Festival 2015, held at the National Stadium in Lisbon against English, Welsh, French and Portuguese teams. The group stay in a 4* hotel, enjoy a high level of hospitality and have cultural and sports excursions included in the tour package. Touring is a great thing to do and is an experience not to be missed, especially at this age. I am sure they will come away from this tour with stories that will stay with them for life! Trevor Greenhill, U14 Lead Rugby Coach and Kingweston Houseparent BE Millfield May 2015 A brand new sports event is being held in May, as introduced by Danny Anholt, Director of Equestrian Sports; Millfield is proud to be hosting our inaugural British Eventing competition on May The event taking place at Millfield Prep promises to be a wonderful spectacle, with picturesque views of Glastonbury Tor. It will cover almost the entire campus, including our brand new cross country course, designed and built by Adrian Ditchum, London 2012 course builder. The event will comprise two days of BE 80, 90 and 100, including Open sections. We anticipate as many as 500 competitors over the weekend, including well known professional riders and a good number of Millfield pupils. Eventing is the ultimate test of equestrian training: The precision and harmony of dressage, the athleticism and control of show jumping and the speed and courage of cross country - all in one day s competition.
