1 Colston`s Sport Reports Autumn Term 2015 Colston`s continues to proudly boast a very successful extra-curricular sports programme. Over 300 boys and girls have represented Colston`s this term in various sporting teams, events and fixtures. Colston`s continues to very successfully compete with its local rivals and various age groups have also started to fly the Colston`s flag at national level. We have also had individuals who have gained recognition national recognition in gymnastics and martial arts, as well as a large number of our boys in the Bristol Rugby EPDG academy programme. Rugby 2015 Colston`s rugby has had a very successful term. The boys have played 119 matches; 69 matches have been won, and 2 drawn and 48 lost. Last year s 38.5% win ratio has been eclipsed by a very respectable 57% this year! It is, however, very important to not focus solely on results alone and it goes without saying, that there are a number of factors that have contributed to this terms all-round improvement. The Colston`s staff who have selflessly given of their time during the week and at weekends, have been excellent. The determination, enthusiasm and passion that we expect from our pupils at Colston`s, has been clearly evident in our staff and they all thoroughly deserve our gratitude! The senior sides have had a solid season. The 1 st XV recorded good wins against Prior Park, Kingswood, Kings College and local rivals BGS. Inconsistency was an issue, but there were glimpses of quality from the squad throughout the term. A relatively young senior squad this year will, I m sure improve during the 7`s season and set strong foundations for next year. The 2 nd XV also had a pleasing season and finished strongly with a fine win against Malvern. The forwards became more dominant as the season progressed and provided a more solid platform for backline to play off. The U16 sides have both continued to progress, winning 50% of their matches. Both teams started and finished the season strongly; the U16A`s winning some physical encounters none more so than the recent win against BGS. The U16B side also edged an epic win with the final play and was testament to their spirit on the field. The U15 sides have continued to develop upon their previous years successes. The U15B team has only lost once all term, but have played some superb rugby in the process. A last minute try against Malvern in their last match to seal victory was a fitting end to a wonderful season. The U15A side, however, have once again been the team to beat and have had a superb run in the NatWest Cup & scoring 651 points this term in the process more than any other school in the country!!!! A fantastic away win against Marlborough College, set up a prestigious home tie against previous National Champions Wellington College, Berkshire. In front of large home crowd the U15A`s side played some exceptional rugby and looked to be heading into Round 7 with a famous win, when Wellington scored with the last play of the match to win An incredibly cruel end to a fantastic season that all players and coaches should be incredibly proud of; a result that goes far beyond the win, loss column and a result that has had a very impact on Colston`s rugby in general. This Year s U14A side have won 5 matches and drawn one, having only won one match last year. An energised squad of players under the experienced guidance of Mr Thornley has made huge progress and played some entertaining rugby in the process. The U14B side, still on the hunt for their first illusive victory, are evidently not far away. They may not have matched the good fortune of their peers in the A squad, but much improved displays against BGS and Malvern are testament to this group s enthusiasm and commitment.

2 The U13A side has gone from strength to strength this year. Another side who struggled to win a match last year have won 7 out of 12 this term and recorded impressive wins against Bristol Grammar School and Clifton College in the process. Mr Cope has had nothing but positive things to say about the commitment, determination and attitude of his players. The squad have applied themselves superbly in all matches and thoroughly deserve this change in fortune. After starting the term strongly with 2 wins, the U13B`s have been on the receiving end of some heavy losses, but more positively, have contributed a number of players to the A squad throughout the year testament to their all-round development. The U12A side have been one of the most successful Colston`s teams in recent times. Finishing 9 th overall in the schools sport performance league and scoring 514 points - more points than any other U12A side in the country is testament to the potential of this group. Under the expert tutorage of Miss Reed, their exciting brand of free flowing rugby has been a joy to watch and the level of skill demonstrated at times, has defied their years. This coupled with some audacious talent and athleticism bodes well for future and a team well worth keeping a close eye on! The U12B side have also been one of the most successful in recent times and have recorded some impressive wins throughout the term. The future of Colston`s rugby is on a very positive upward curve and I am confident that we can develop even further upon this again next year. 5 Girls Hockey 2015 This has been a tricky season at times, with some of our junior teams finding it difficult competing with the experience of some of the teams on our circuit. However, the way in which these same teams have represented the school, week in and week out is highly commendable. Their work ethic has been positive and testament to the pupil s commitment and positivity of the coaching staff. The U12A&B and U13A sides have all made good progress and there is no question that they will become more successful in the future. As we have already alluded to, results and the win, loss column should not be the primary focus and all of the girls are developing a broader repertoire of core skill and game understanding. This development will come to the fore in future years and, as with previous years, will produce some very efficient hockey teams. The progress at the senior end of the school fully supports this notion. The U14A side have had a formidable season winning 8 of their matches and drawing one; scoring 38 goals in the process and conceding only 3. Without doubt, they are the team of the year! Statistically, they are currently ranked fourth in the country, in the Schoolssports.com performance league for their age group, which is something that no other team has ever achieved before. Huge congratulations are afforded to Miss Roberts who has coached the team and the girls for the effort and attitude that they have demonstrated throughout the season. The U15A side have also had a very positive term recording good wins after the half term break. A slow start saw them lose 3 out of our first 4 games and morale definitely took a hit. Following half term and a tweak to the team formation, the squad were unstoppable and secured 4 impressive victories against strong local teams. All the players improved in terms of the fitness and skill level resulting in a respectable win ratio. The 1 st XI produced a season that they can be extremely proud of. Following a productive pre-season, the signs looked good for the term ahead. After an indifferent start to the term, a well-deserved win against Monkton Combe helped to settle the nerves. Further losses at the end of September didn t dampen the enthusiasm or the girl s determination; three wins on the bounce followed. A strong end to the term and a win against Wellington School was testament to the player s perseverance and resilience throughout the term. Colston`s hockey competes on a very strong circuit and we must lose site of the our achievements against much bigger schools. Winning is important, but more importantly we must ensure that we do not ignore the value of participating to the best of our ability and continue to represent Colston`s with pride.
