4 Message from the Chairman I have always said that Special Olympics is not just a movement or a revolution. It is a way of life, the world s present & future, the only solution to humanity and the one single most important habit any citizen of a country can imbibe. And the best time to do it is NOW. Special Olympics Bharat has taken giant leaps in the last few years to emerge as a leader in the world of sportspersons with intellectual disabilities. The last year itself, has witnessed major shift in the strategy and long term goals of the organization. We are moving from target-based efforts to sustainable efforts which surpass our targets. Mapping of state program goals with the national program and further with the Asia-Pacific Program and finally contributing towards the worldwide goals of SOI is the order of the day. But, it is going to be miles before we sleep. In Dr.Shriver s own words- We must have an audacious ambition and a restless dissatisfaction in the heart Keep going. Well done, Bravo Zulu!! Dr. Cdr KARTIKAY SAINI 4

5 Special Olympics International A global movement which uses sport as a catalyst to transform the lives. The Foundation Founded by Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver in the USA in 1968 Program recognized by the International Olympic Committee Aug 2009 Eunice Kennedy Shriver passes away Spread to over 177 Countries Covers over 35 Olympic Type Games for the Summer and Winter Olympics Carrying Forward the Legacy Dr Tim Shriver Chairman & CEO from 2009 Introduced Global 5 year Global Strategic Plan Introduced major holistic and value- added reforms Introduced unified sports on a large scale Broadened vision beyond ID Persons too include all likeminded partners Renewed commitment to Sustained Quality Growth Transited from a Program to a Movement Introduced a new Community -orientated Global Strategic Plan Provided additional funding for significant funding for initiatives 5

6 The Foundation Nothing happens but first a dream The Beginning: Every Movement has a heart and a story. Ours began because of one woman, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who deeply loved her sister. She became furious about the neglect and indifference she saw towards her sister and others with Intellectual Disabilities. She had deep faith that everyone counts and she loved sports. In a moment that literally changed the world, she saw how sports can transform the lives of those who shared the challenges of her sister. Special Olympics was born on this compassion, fury and action. The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide year round Sports Training and competition in a variety of Olympics type Sports for children and adults with intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. We don t exist to provide, service to a single group. We are here to change society and demonstratethat change involves all of us. We facilitate and engage in experiences that are transformative not just for our Athletes but for all who engage with open hearts and mind. Dr. Tim Shriver, Global Strategic Plan 2011 to

47 Torch Bearer of Nagaland Blessed are we to have Tiaba in our school, says Elizabeth Dozo, Principal, Great Commission Kids Academy School (a Mainstream School) Dimapur. Tiaba Tzudir is 21 years of age and is a student of class 3. A Sensitized outlook and strong determination for bringing recognition and Inclusion of persons with Intellectual Disabilities created common ground for the Principal and Aren, Area Director Special Olympics Bharat- Nagaland to meet. Last year Tiaba became the first student with Special Needs to be part of the school. Preceding his admission the Principal conducted a few rounds of discussions with the Board Members, students and teachers to welcome a new awakening. As he continues to study here, Elizabeth keeps taking updates about him from his teachers, students and family members. Undeterred in Jammu & Kashmir-Rakesh Amidst intermittent shooting, shelling and bombing, barely half a kilometre from the Indo- Pak border, an area that reels under administrative apathy, transforming lives of persons with Intellectual disabilities is not priority. Rakesh, born with Down Syndrome, as a child was often seen wandering around in lanes and by-lanes, unclothed, completely ignored by passers-by. Things changed when he proved his worth by becoming the first Athlete of the frontier region belonging to the Village Kotil Mirdian, Tehsil RS Pura, District Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir. The change in Rakesh s personality is nothing less of a miracle. Special Olympics Bharat has changed the life of many children like Rakesh, by way of exploring their sporting abilities. His proudest moment is when he wins medals and certificates in SO Bharat and in his own words, it feels divine when you win an award. - Dr. Ashwani Jojra, Area Director, SO Bharat- J&K Special Olympics Bharat has brought a smile on our face. We feel proud of our son - Rakesh s Father. 47

54 Part III- CONCLUSION In the Words of Air Marshal Denzil Keelor PVSM, KC, AVSM, VrC This has been an exciting year for SO Bharat as the new startegic plan unfolded bringing with it a paradigm shift in our perspective. New realities that have emerged promise to hasten our long ambition of awareness and inclusion. We have succeeded in revising our priorities and re- aligning our program with the new guidelines that have been laid down. We are pleased that we still have the challenge of reaching to large numbers of children especially Young Athletes and Youth and I am sure that the outcome and impact of these changes will bear fruit SO Bharat did not find any difficulties in changing track to meet thes, e requirements. We continue to engage in large numbers and are delighted that our early intervention, harnessing the youth and broadening our network will strengthen our endeavours in the years ahead. We d like to bring on record that we find ourselves working more closely with SOI and SOAP.Its like the saying I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; Together we can do great things - Mother Teresa 54
