Sports minister forms enquiry committee to probe Jaisha allegations NEW DELHI, (IANS) Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Tuesday constituted a two-member committee to enquire into women marathoner O.P. Jaisha's allegations about official apathy and callousness during the Rio Olympics. The committee consists of joint secretary (Sports) Onkar Kedia and director (Sports) Vivek Narayan. The two member committee will submit its report in seven days, a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release said. "It has been widely reported in the media that Ms. O.P. Jaisha, marathon runner collapsed at the end of the marathon run in Rio Olympics 2016, as there were no Indian officials present to provide her water and energy drinks at refreshment points and that there were officials from all other countries to provide refreshments to their runners at designated points after every 2.5 kms," the release added. Jaisha on Monday revealed shocking levels of official incompetence, which she claimed could have even proved fatal for her. Jaisha claimed that Indian officials did not bother to make arrangements to provide water and energy drinks to her during the race despite designated stations after every 2.5 kilometres being allocated for Indian athletes. Jaisha finished 89th in the event with a below-par timing of 2 hours, 47 minutes and 19 seconds. "It was very hot there. The competition was at 9 a.m., I ran in scorching heat. There was no water for us, neither recovery drinks nor food. Only once in 8 kms did we get water (from the Rio organisers) which did not help at all. All the countries had their stalls at every two kms but our country's stall was empty," Jaisha told a television news channel. "We are supposed to be given drinks by our technical officials, it's the rule. We cannot take water from any other team. I saw the Indian board there but there was nothing. I had a lot of problem, I fainted after the race. I was administered glucose, I thought I would die," she added. Jaisha had collapsed at the finish line after completing the marathon and had to be rushed to a hospital where her coach Nikolai Snesarev got into an altercation with one of the doctors and was detained by the local police for several hours. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has brushed aside her claims, saying she made those allegations against the governing body to cover up her poor performance. The federation even said the athlete herself refused any arrangement when approached a day before the event by the officials. India's (official) Olympic spend a third of UK's - and falling BY ABHISHEK WAGHMARE India's last Olympic gold-medal winner, Abhinav Bindra, recently pointed to United Kingdom's spending on athletes at the Rio Olympics, emphasising the money needed to convert performance into medals. An IndiaSpend analysis of spending on Olympics in particular, and sports in general, reveals that India spends roughly a third to a fourth of the money spent by the UK, which won 67 medals, compared to India's two -- and central funding to sports federations is falling. The UK spends money on fewer athletes compares to India, where spending is diffused among numerous federations and athletes, according to our analysis. The UK has 18 million people aged between 15 and 35, while India has more than 400 million youth in that age group. The original story in the Guardian, a UK newspaper, calculated a 5.5 million ($7 million) investment per medal by UK Sport, a government body that funds and manages Olympic sport. The UK, in general, spends $1.5 billion (Rs 9,000 crore) on sports infrastructure and training through an annual sports budget, while UK Sport spent about $350 million on Olympics preparation over four years ( ). In comparison, India spends a third of UK, or $500 million (Rs 3,200 crore) on youth affairs and sports through the Union budget and the states, according to estimates from our review of sports budgets of six large states. The same Union budget funds -- through the ministry of youth affairs and sports -- national sports federations (NSFs) and potential Olympic athletes through the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) and Target Olympic Podium (TOP) programme. The NSDF is also funded through private organisations and public sector enterprises, apart from government contributions. In India, Rs 750 crore was spent on sport-specific federations, training centres, coaches and other infrastructure over four years ( to ), while the spending on athletes is Rs 22.7 crore through NSDF (109 athletes) and Rs 38 crore thought the TOP programme (97 athletes for 2016 Olympics, excluding para- Olympic athletes) over the last four years. I believed in myself, did not think of medal: Sindhu HYDERABAD, (IANS) Rio Olympics silver medalist P.V. Sindhu, who returned home Monday to a rousing reception, said she believed in herself and did not think of medals. The star shuttler who created history by becoming the first Indian woman to claim silver medal at the Olympics, said she gave her best effort and took it match by match. She believes the hardwork put in during the last two months and many sacrifices she, her parents and her coach Pullela Gopichand made paid off. "It was my first Olympics. I was very excited. My aim was to play well and give my 100 percent. I never thought of medal. We took it match by match and prepared the strategy," said Sindhu, who settled for silver after she went down fighting in the final against Spain's Carolina Marin. Asked if she had thought of going this far before Olympics, the 21-year-old said she just believed in herself. "I just believed in myself. I went and I gave my 100 percent. I did it. Considered as the country's highest sporting honour, the Khel Ratna award is conferred on a sportsperson for outstanding performance over a period of four years. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh along with a medal and a citation. Dipa's coach Bisheshwar Nandi has been selected for the Dronacharya award along side Team India skipper Virat Kohli's coach Raj Kumar Sharma, athletics coach Nagapuri Ramesh and boxing coach Sagar Mal Dhayal.
