1 Hovedstad Posten Volume 44, Issue 5 May Kjære venner, Fra Presidenten Board Meetings Third Tuesday of the Month at 5:30 Subway Cleveland Ave & North St All members are invited Regular Meetings September May 4th Monday each month at 7:00 PM Columbian Hall 6794 Martin Way E Olympia, WA Need directions? Have a question about an upcoming meeting or event? Contact Linda Fialkowski norwaydreamer@comcast.net Next Event May 22nd 6:00 PM Wow, what a wonderful Norway Day we had! Even the sun came out to help us celebrate. Many thanks to all of you who helped to make it a success. We had Vikings all around us and the kids especially enjoyed interacting with them. Our bake sale sold out in record time this year and the café was not far behind. We had folks walking around with bags of the baked goods and a number of them took their bags to the car and came back for more. Norwegian goodies are always a big treat for our visitors. It seems we sell out earlier each year. A big Tusen Takk to the Olympic Crest Roasters for their donation of coffee and supplies. We truly appreciate their support. Our visitors always head for the complimentary coffee as soon as they come in the door. We had a few new vendors this year, which is a welcome change. It gives our visitors more choices and they seemed to like the variation. All in all, it was a terrific day and we should be proud of a job well done! Now, plans are underway for another successful Norway Day next year. A special Velkommen to all the new members who joined at Norway Day. Now they will get to be involved in Norway Day - just like their fellow Lodge members and, they will get to share in all the fun. Our District 2 Zone 4 seminar was held last weekend in Tacoma. It was a good opportunity to network with other Sons Lodges and to exchange ideas. We will have another one in two years, and, hopefully we can have an even better representation from Hovedstad Lodge. Our next event will be our Syttende Mai dinner scheduled for May 22 nd. We will have a wonderful dinner at the River s Edge Restaurant. Be sure to get your reservations in early as seating will be somewhat limited and reservations are pouring in. More information is elsewhere in the newsletter. This will be a fun evening you won t want to miss. I hope to see many of you there. Hurra for Syttende Mai! Joanne

4 Happy Norway Norway is the happiest place on Earth, according to a United Nations agency report - toppling neighbor Denmark from the number one position. The World Happiness Report measures "subjective well-being" - how happy the people are, and why. Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last. Western Europe and North America dominated the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th, respectively. Countries in sub-saharan Africa and those hit by conflict have predictably low scores. Syria placed 152 of 155 countries - Yemen and South Sudan, which are facing impending famine, came in at 146 and 147. The World Happiness Report was released to coincide with the United Nations' International Day of Happiness on 20 March. Today s Recruitment Goals Fuel Future Success Sons of Norway Headquarters is pleased to announce the launch of its 2017 recruitment campaign a revamped and expanded Founders Day Awards. With our 125th anniversary fast approaching, the new campaign reinforces the vision of Sons of Norway s founders for an organization that celebrates its roots while continuing to look toward the future. With the new Founders Day Award, lodges that reach their target recruitment goal are rewarded with a number of prizes. These include a $200 cash card the lodge may use toward a celebration of reaching its goal, exclusive access to a new program for lodge members, and more. Join the conversation about growing Sons of Norway into the future - find us on or on our Facebook page. Better yet - share how you or your lodge is working toward the future by using #Growingto2020
5 Syttende Mai Norway s Constitution Day Facts about Norway s Constitution Most of us know that the Constitution was signed on May 17, 1814, a day that Norway celebrates today with massive parades and parties annually. But there are plenty more interesting facts surrounding this event, arguably Norway s greatest event in history. Did you know that the Constitution that was signed and adopted is the second oldest written Constitution in the world still in existence today? At the time it was also considered to be the most forward thinking and radically democratic Constitution ever written. Did you know that the Constitution underwent a linguistic revision in 1903? The overall language of the Constitution has basically remained unaltered, and the 1903 language is still used when proposed changes are made to the Constitution. Norway Day 2017 Did you know that the document was inspired by the United States and French constitutions? The main difference was the text that referred to Norway as a Constitutional Monarchy. Did you know that within the famous portrait of the Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll, about 70 of the 112 delegates present were painted well enough to be identified? Did you know that the representatives who put the Constitution together were under great pressure to finish the document? The Constitution was written and signed in 5 weeks. The January 14, 1814 Kiel Treaty said that Denmark would relinquish control over Norway to Sweden. During that transition of power Norway was considered an independent kingdom. In taking full advantage of that control a Constituent Assembly was put together, a King was appointed and a Constitution was written. Judy, Judi & Ken Protecting or plundering?
