3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS SPECIAL OLYMPICS? Special Olympics is a worldwide program of sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports. WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS SCHOOL GAMES? The School Games is an opportunity for students from Ventura County to participate in a Special Olympics track and field training and competition program as part of their physical education or special day class program and during the school day. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS SCHOOL GAMES? Children age 5-post secondary school with intellectual disabilities (formerly known as mental retardation/developmental disabilities) with their special day class or special education program. WHAT AGES CAN COMPETE? Athletes must be at least five years of age in order to compete in the School Games. WHAT DO THE TEACHERS NEED TO DO? As soon as possible, teachers should decide from the list of track and field events what each student will compete in. Provide some basic training - stretching, practice their event whether it s throwing the ball, or running the selected distance on a track or playground. Students should also practice the starting of the race with a whistle and mark a finish line on the ground for the various distances. Teachers should help prepare their students to compete. HOW DO I REGISTER MY STUDENTS? Complete the Athlete Registration Form with the student s information, and two events entering and turn in to Special Olympics by the deadline. HOW MANY EVENTS CAN A STUDENT COMPETE IN? Students may compete in a maximum of 2 events selected from the event list. It is recommended that they participate in 1 track and 1 field event but it is not required. This usually depends on the student s ability to compete in specific events. IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED? No, most schools attending are able to use their field trip program to attend the School Games. Or family members bring the student athlete to the Games. WHO GETS A LUNCH AND T-SHIRT? All students, and teachers who register for the Games in advance will be provided lunch and souvenir t-shirts at the Games. WHAT WILL ATHLETES GET? Each athlete will be awarded two official Special Olympics medal for the 2 events they compete in.

4 SOSC Special Olympics Southern California SOVC Special Olympics Ventura County SPECIAL OLYMPICS TERMINOLOGY ATHLETE Student with intellectual disability who participates in Special Olympics. HEAD COACH One key representative from each class/school serving as a coordinator and has knowledge of the students/athletes, Special Olympics and the School Games. COACH/ASSISTANT COACH Additional key representatives from class/school who assist head coach during training and competition. VOLUNTEER Any individual who assists at the actual School Games competition. Volunteers may also include individuals on your Games Management Team or fulfilling other roles to support Special Olympics. CLASS A VOLUNTEER Any volunteer who is regular direct contact with athletes, serves in a position of authority over athletes, or handles substantial amounts of money. Class A volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer registration form and have a background check before working with athletes. CLASS B VOLUNTEER All other volunteers, including those who help out at competitions. Class B volunteers are required to fill out a volunteer registration form. ATHLETICS Special Olympics refers to Track & Field as Athletics. GAMES MANAGEMENT TEAM The Games Management Team is responsible for planning and executing the School Games competition. SPECIAL OLYMPICS SPORTS MANAGER/REGIONAL DIRECTOR Special Olympics staff members who you can contact with any questions or concerns about School Games and Special Olympics in general. These individuals will also be key members of the Games Management Team.
