3 1 INTRODUCTION greetings from Lake placid, NY, Usa: The 2019 International Children s Winter Games are just around the corner, January 6-11, The Village of Lake Placid is excited to showcase its world-class sporting venues to hundreds of young athletes, boys and girls, ages 12-15, from as many as 50 global cities, who will compete in winter sports to include Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboard, and Speed Skating. Our Press Operations team continues to make progress as we prepare the services and facilities to assist you with your coverage plans of the 2019 Lake Placid International Children s Winter Games. This Press Services and Facilities Guide provides an overview of what s planned for the accredited written and photographic press covering the event. This guide also contains important information about a variety of topics, including accreditation, media/photo services, competition venues and main and venue media centers. The goal of the press team is to provide you with the essential services and workspaces at each of the venues to help you tell the 2019 Lake Placid International Children s Winter Games story. 4 2 INTRODUCTION Press Operations Press Operations is responsible for planning the services and facilities for the accredited press and photographers at the 2019 International Children s Winter Games. Whether it s the Nordic events at the Olympic Jumping Complex, the Alpine/ snowboarding competitions at Whiteface Mountain, speed skating on the Olympic oval, or figured hockey in the Olympic Center, the goal is to provide the accredited press and photographers with the essential services and workspaces needed so that they can tell the 2019 Lake Placid International Children s Winter Games story. About the INTERNATIONAL Children s WINTER Games The ICG is dedicated to pursue the common goal of forming nation-linking friendships through the exercising of sports and the arranging of sports competitions. The goal of the International Children s Games is to enable, develop and advance the meeting, understanding and friendship of students from different countries, and to advance the Olympic ideals. The Village of Lake Placid will offer competition for youth ages 12 to 15 in the sports of Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboard, and Speed Skating (both long and short track). Entry into competition for the ICWG is by invitation.

5 3 INTRODUCTION About the Lake Placid International Children s WINTER Games Lake Placid, NY, USA, will welcome the International Children s Winter Games athletes, officials, coaches, committees, families, media and spectators from January 6-11, Participation in the ICWG 2019 is by invitation only from the International Children s Games committee and the local organizing committee. The International Children s Games are comprised of teams from cities from around the world, not by country. There will be multiple teams from some countries. With competition in eight winter sports, children of the world, ages will experience an international-level competition most have never experienced. Geared toward friendly competition and international cultural diversity, athletes will have the opportunity to mingle with many children from cities around the globe in an enriching environment of cultural exchange. Lake Placid is planning many fun and entertaining activities as well as a student cultural exchange program with our regional school students. In the process, there will be many friendships formed that will last a lifetime. In our team events, athletes will be mixed into teams representing many different cities in an effort to even out the competition. Coaches and sport officials will select team members to achieve the resulting teams for these fun events. For more information about the ICWGs visit

Eligibility Accreditations will be allocated to media professionals who meet the above criteria. Each person must be affiliated with one or several news organizations and his/her application must be validated by the news organization they represent. Internet Overview Internet access will be available at the Main Press Center (MPC) and Venue Media Centers (VMC). Press and photographers will have access to wireless internet services and a limited number of wired connections, primarily for the use of photographers, will also be available.

Every year the 7,700-seat 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena named after the Miracle on Ice coach hosts national and international figure skating competitions, USA Hockey events, Stars on Ice, ECAC Hockey

11 9 Olympic Center It was at the Lake Placid Olympic Center in 1980 that the U.S. men s hockey team toppled the Soviet Union on their way to winning the gold medal. This is where 16-year-old figure skater Sonja Henie won an Olympic gold medal in 1932 and charmed the world. Every year the 7,700-seat 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena named after the Miracle on Ice coach hosts national and international figure skating competitions, USA Hockey events, Stars on Ice, ECAC Hockey Championships, and other special events. There are three indoor ice surfaces USA Rink, Herb Brooks Arena Rink and Jack Shea Arena Rink. Olympic Jumping Complex In August 2008, the Olympic Jumping Complex opened its 2.5-kilometer roller loop. The facility is an important addition to the already excellent training facilities in Lake Placid, which include the U.S. Olympic Training Center as well the trails and biathlon range at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg. The venue has served as the site for all Empire State Winter Games Nordic competitions, and most recently, the roller loop hosted the 2017 U.S. Cross Country Junior National Championships.

10 Olympic Speed Skating Oval The outdoor oval is located in the same area as Lake Placid High School and was built in time for the 1932 Olympic Winter Games.

During the 1980 Olympic Winter Olympics, American speed skater Eric Heiden won an Olympic record five gold medals, all in either World or Olympic Record Times.

In addition to hosting the speed skating events, the oval was also used for the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the starting- and end-point for cross-country exercises and ice hockey matches. Whiteface Mountain Whiteface Mountain is home to the greatest vertical in the east. It was also home to the 1980 Olympic Winter Games Alpine competitions. The resort offers more than 22 miles and 288 skiable acres of skiing and snowboarding on 87 trails, serviced by nine lifts and an eight-passenger gondola. To ensure the best skiing and riding anywhere in the eastern United States, 99% of the resort is covered with snowmaking capability, utilizing 335 snow guns and 40 miles of piping.
