3 W H I T E F A C E L A K E P L A C I D In Lake Placid, the Olympic flame burns 365 days a year, fanning the dreams of generations of local athletes who have come to train and compete on the world stage. As the Winter Sports Capital of the World, there s no better place to experience a destination where some of winter sports history s most legendary moments occurred, while making unforgettable memories with colleagues, friends or family. Since 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) has overseen the care and promotion of Lake Placid s Olympic venues. Our mission is two-fold to ensure that these venues remain state-of-the-art sports complexes for each new generation of aspiring Olympians and to welcome anyone interested in learning about, or actively participating in winter sports, to enjoy our unique facilities. We are committed to the preservation of our heritage and welcome the world to enjoy our sports complexes year-round. 5 W H I T E F A C E Whiteface Mountain stands alone at the north end of Lake Placid in the town of Wilmington, looking out over lake and village to the Great Range of the Adirondack High Peaks and beyond. But location is not the only way in which Whiteface is set apart. The ski area boasts a history that includes the XIIIth Winter Olympics, the 2000 inaugural Winter Goodwill Games and the 2000 inaugural Winter National Senior Games The Senior Olympics, as well as more National and World Cup competitions than most North American ski mountains will ever see. Whiteface also offers the fastest lift on the continent the Cloudsplitter Gondola and a 3,430 foot vertical drop, the greatest east of the Rockies. This incomparable mountain gives skiers and riders a total of 283 skiable acres, including 35 acres of out of bounds skiing in The Slides, 53 acres of tree skiing, and a 15-acre terrain park. The 88 trails are currently serviced by 11 lifts that can move 14,900 people per hour. Whiteface offers FIS homologated downhill, super G, giant slalom, slalom, freestyle moguls, and half pipe courses as well as terrain for snowboard & ski cross. Continually working to improve its facilities, ORDA built the Cloudsplitter Gondola in The eight person gondola is the fastest in North America and shortened the ride from the base of the mountain to the top of Little Whiteface to only seven and a half minutes. In 2002, the high-speed, detachable quad Face Lift began operation carrying skiers and riders from the mountain base to the top of Upper Valley in around six minutes. Whiteface has also been improving its snowmaking system, increasing its water and compressed air capacity and adding low energy guns and automation technology. Also, Whiteface is one of only a few ski areas to regularly use two winch snow cats to groom even the steepest terrain nightly. New in the season was the opening of Lookout Mountain featuring three expert runs, one long intermediate trail, snowmaking, triple chair, and more glades. It will drop 2,200 vertical feet, more than some resorts in the East. Featuring the Lookout Mountain expansion, challenging terrain, an updated lift system, a comprehensive snowmaking system, electronic timing and scoring systems, media facilities, and athlete services, Whiteface has become a favorite site for both competitors and spectators. U.S. and Canadian Alpine and Freestyle, U.S. Disabled Alpine, and Division I college ski teams train here regularly. Truly an all-around mountain, Whiteface has been continually voted the #1 place to ski and ride in the East numerous times and earned awards for scenery, challenge, terrain, and off-hill activities. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Vertical Rise 3,430 Lift-serviced vertical 3,166 Terrain Expert 37% Intermediate 43 Beginner 20 Snow Making Ability 98 coverage (187 acres) w/ 190 guns and 33 miles of pipe Average Snow Fall 200" Average Temperature 21.5 F Average Season mid-november through mid-april ATHLETES Whiteface offers athletes two warming areas. The base lodge has a full dining facility, seating area, and equipment storage.
6 The mid-station lodge, located directly below the mogul and alpine courses, gives the athletes a place to stay warm, eat, and repair equipment while remaining near their competition site. Tuning and waxing facilities can also be made available on-site. Dining Whiteface The way we see it, a good day on the mountain requires good food. Our seven on-mountain restaurants feature delicious, affordable, energy-boosting food and beverages. Popular brands and regional favorites selected by our culinarians refresh and refuel our guests as they enjoy their day on the mountain. We invite you to savor... 7 O L Y M P I C J U M P I N G C O M P L E X The Olympic Jumping Complex will be the site of your Nordic competitions. The 2.5km of trails will provide a challenging course fro you to compete on while your teammates will be able to cheer you on from this fan friendly venue with many viewing locations and the Intervales Lodge and patio an excellent spot for spectating, warming and food and beverage. This venue will also be the site of opening ceremonies complete with cauldron lighting and fireworks. You'll see up close the ramp that ski jumpers launch from before flying over the length of a football field. Take the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex elevator to the observation deck of the K-120 meter jump. At the top you will find a panoramic view of the Adirondack High Peaks as you stroll through the ski jumpers preparation room. Then get a bird's eye view of what the jumpers see as they start to accelerate towards the end of the ramp. Nearby, aerialists will spring off steep kickers on the Lake Placid Freestyle hill in a flurry of twists, turns and tumbles. We are all taught that you need wings to fly. Not in the case of Nordic Combined Olympian Bill Demong, who made history at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Bill, a local Olympian, was the first American to win Nordic Combined gold. The Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid was Bill's training ground for many years and is currently the training site for many aspiring young athletes who hope one day to earn a spot on the U.S. Winter Olympic Team!
