2 BICENTENARY EVENTS 2018 Your Bicentenary Committee have been developing events across the globe and for all age and interest groups to celebrate the Club s bicentenary in The key events are detailed below and you are invited to book places now. Entry from 6pm and the 90 minute reception will include hot and cold canapes and glasses of Leander Pink. We anticipate that there will be very high demand for tickets, which are restricted to one per Member at 50 a head. Tickets are not transferable. To make the process as fair as possible application forms received by post or before Monday 20th November will be drawn by ballot. No booking can be accepted by telephone. Subject to security clearance, the successful applicants will be notified by before 8th December. Formal invitations will then be sent out with the relevant instructions, which will gain you a smooth entry. Members will not be surprised to know that access is tightly controlled. Approved guests will be required to bring photo ID, such as passport or driving licence, with them, and pass through an airport-style search point. You should allow 20 minutes for entry from 6 pm (you will not gain entry beforehand). Mobile phones will need to be handed in on arrival and amateur photography is not permitted. Members will no doubt wish to have a photographic record of the visit and we have therefore secured the services of a professional photographer for the event. The State Room is on the first floor and lift access is not straightforward. Wheelchairs can only be accommodated by prior arrangement. For many of us, this will be our only opportunity to visit such an iconic venue and we feel sure that once the entry hurdles are surmounted it will be a memorable experience for us all. 3 MEET THE ATHLETES DINNER LEANDER CLUB, THURSDAY 15th FEBRUARY pm to 9.45pm (BAR WILL REMAIN OPEN) Our guest speaker at the February Meet the Athletes Evening is Sir David Tanner CBE. As British Rowing s Performance Director since 1996, Sir David Tanner has led the sport through its richest ever period of success and helped take Leander s Olympic medal tally to 123. The evening will follow our well established and highly successful formula pm Complimentary reception drinks will be served and you will have a chance to meet all the athletes and Sir David pm We will move promptly to table where the athletes will be introduced before the service of a three-course meal. Members will share their tables of ten with the past and present Leander Olympic Champions and medallists. There will be two athletes per table and they will move after each course ensuring you all have a chance to meet as many as possible pm Sir David will speak and take questions pm Athletes depart but the bar remains open. THE MENU FOR THE NIGHT: Thai spiral noodle, vegetable salad with seared teriyaki salmon. Confit breast of lamb, Savoy cabbage, ragout of roast root veg, crushed buttered potatoes. Toffee, apple and caramel pudding with clotted cream ice-cream. Special diets can be accommodated. Bookings. Tickets are 55 a head including reception drinks, allowing guests to purchase their own table wines as they require. These events always fill up quickly and bookings can be made straight to the club office with card payment. Members are very welcome to bring guests. DUBLIN CELEBRATORY DINNER CITY CENTRE LOCATION AND KILDARE STREET AND UNIVERSITY CLUB SATURDAY 24th FEBRUARY 2018 We are moving to Ireland on Saturday 24 February Club Member John Aiken has put in place a celebration of our Irish heritage, and will provide some of the country s renowned hospitality in a formal, yet good old-fashioned, Irish setting. Arrangements centre on a Members Black/Cerise Tie Dinner on the Saturday evening in the Kildare Street and University Club, St. Stephen s Green, Dublin. The Club President Jeremy (Rass) Randall will preside. A reception for Members and invited guests, including a talk by the Club s historian and Olympic commentator, Robert Treharne Jones, on the history of the three Cork Cups ( ), will take place earlier in the day at a city centre location. DINNER MENU: Pan-seared Dublin Bay prawns scallion-ginger nage and angel hair. Duo of grilled Charolais beef and fillet of Dexter Beef short-rib roasted shallots, mange tout and wild cherries horseradish mash and red wine reduction. Raspberry tart, crème fraiche and lemon thyme raspberry sorbet and lemon meringue. Coffee or tea with macarons. DRINKS: Black Hippo (Guinness and Prosecco) - Montepulciano gran Sasso - Beaujolais Villages Blanc - Warre Otima Port 10 year old The Wales v Ireland International takes place in Dublin that afternoon for those who enjoy their rugby and can secure tickets. We are planning other distractions for the weekend and details of these will be made available to successful applicants, together with reception details. For those who wish to be accompanied by non-member partners at the reception and other activities, we will be making alternative collective evening arrangements. We anticipate this event being fully booked and recommend early application online or using the booking form. The cost for dinner with wines and the complimentary morning Reception is 98.00

4 ANTIPODEAN CELEBRATIONS ROYAL SYDNEY YACHT SQUADRON SUNDAY 25th MARCH 2018 A dinner has been planned by Member Chris Hartley at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Sunday 25th March following the King s Cup. President Jeremy (Rass) Randall will be in attendance. A prestigious reception event is under negotiations for earlier in the day. More details will be circulated in due course but initial interest can be registered at Sydney2018@leander.co.uk HENLEY CELEBRATORY RECEPTION LEANDER CLUB TUESDAY 22nd MAY 2018 We are planning a celebratory event in Henley on the evening of Tuesday 22nd May to coincide with a local Rowing exhibition. Details will follow but please put the date in your diary. EVENSONG AT ST PAUL S CATHEDRAL CITY OF LONDON WEDNESDAY 2nd MAY pm By kind permission of the Dean and Chapter, Leander Club will commemorate its bicentenary at an open service in St Paul s Cathedral on Wednesday 2nd May at 5pm. The St Paul s acclaimed choir will sing Evensong. Members and their guests are encouraged to attend. Immediately after the service the Club have arranged a private two course supper and wines in the St Paul s Crypt for members and their guests. Supper may be booked at a cost of 66 a head on the booking form or through the website. NEW YORK DINNER BROOK CLUB, NY TUESDAY 22nd MAY 2018 We are grateful to Mungo Meehan who has arranged for Leander Club to hold a formal dinner at The Brook, 111 East 54 Street New York, on Tuesday 22nd May As far as we are aware this is almost precisely the date on which Leander Club started. The dinner will be hosted by President Jeremy (Rass) Randall and his predecessor Sir George Cox and is open to all Members and their spouses/partners. Leander is fortunate to be able to host a celebratory dinner, open to all Members, at The Brook, a private club in Manhattan, More details will be circulated in due course but initial interest can be registered by ing NewYork2018@leander.co.uk

5 TEA ON THE TERRACE HOUSE OF COMMONS THURSDAY 7th JUNE 2018 Thanks to the kind permission of The Lord Colin Moynihan of Leeds, Leander Club Members and their guests may enjoy afternoon tea on the terrace of the House of Commons on Thursday 7th June 2018 from 4 pm until 6 pm. From this vantage point, you will be able to look over the river to the site of Searle s Boatyard where Leander was founded in The cost of afternoon tea and a glass of fizz is 50 a head. LEANDER DURING HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA LEANDER CLUB 4th TO 8th JULY 2018 Leander during Regatta has to be a serious date for your diary in We will unveil our celebratory plans in the March 2018 Members Regatta pack and in the May 2018 edition of our Newsletter. Members are most welcome to bring spouses or partners. Access is tightly controlled. Approved guests will be required to bring their invitation, sperate photo ID, such as passport or driving licence. They are required to pass through an airport-style search point at the Cromwell Gardens entrance to the Palace where they will be issued with a security pass. 20 minutes should be allowed for entry clearance and a further 10 minutes to walk to the terrace. Entry to the terrace cannot take place before 4 pm. Applications must be made on the attached form or online via our website. They must be received at Leander Club by 30th April. Successful applicants will be sent formal invitation cards which must be presented at the point of entry. These invitations are not transferable. FAMILIES DAY AT LEANDER LEANDER CLUB SUNDAY 22nd JULY 2018 This event is particularly aimed at those Members with young families. Games in the garden, jelly and ice cream and lots more. Details will follow in May 2018 Newsletter but until then please put this date in your diary.

6 THE BICENTENARY BANQUET LONDON GUILDHALL, WEDNESDAY 10th OCTOBER 2018 We welcomed back our Leander Rio Olympians at London Guildhall in 2016 and this fabulous venue and their excellent caterers provided us with a superb evening. Having negotiated some financial support we are able to return to Guildhall next autumn with the same caterers at a much-reduced Member cost of 99 a head which will include: reception drinks, a three-course meal and wines in the most prestigious of venues. LONDON DUBLIN NEW YORK SYDNEY HENLEY DIARY NOTES: Speak to anyone who went to the last Guildhall dinner and they will tell you this is a night not to be missed.
