The Constitution of the United States of America Second Amendment FUTURE PLANS FOR COSSA COSSA operates as a 501.C.7 as a Tax-exempt club and COSSA will continue to operate as a 501.C.7. For some time COSSA has realized we need to create a new foundation that will operate under a 501.C.3. The 501.C.3 will be a nonprofit charitable foundation designed to promote safe shooting in Central Oregon and help fund COSSA. This new foundation will be able to accept tax deductible donations. I am hoping these donations will provide more funding to COSSA. This new foundation is required to operate separately from the existing board. As a result, COSSA will be creating a 501.C.3 board of directors. As President I will go to as many of these board meetings as possible but only as a visitor. I am looking for people interested in being on our new 501.C.3 board. Seeing that this is brand new to us I can t say how much time this will require but my guess is a 2 hour meeting once a quarter. If you or someone you know is interested in being on this board please let me know. You can me at President@Cossapark.com. SIGHT IN CLINICS COSSA has 2 sight in clinics scheduled for September. The will be on September 8 th & 9 th and September 22 & 23, from 9 am to 4 pm The clinics will be held at the Bill Fockler Memorial sight in range. The clinics are open to both members and non-members. The cost will be $7.00 for non-members and $5.00 for members. COSSA will provide everything except guns and ammo. Expert assistance will be provided for those that are unfamiliar with the methods of sighting in for hunting. This is a yearly service that COSSA provides for the community and volunteers are needed to help out. Volunteers are needed to setup, teardown, assist shooters, spot for shooters and sign shooters up. You do not need to be an expert to help. Any members that want to learn more about sighting in are welcome to come out and help. Many volunteers are needed to make things run smoothly. You do not have to spend the full time helping, if you have a few hours to spare and want to help contact Bill Lewis, or lewis.w.l@hotmail.com, to set a time. 2 WORK PARTY FOR AUGUST The work party for August was a short one. The weather was very hot and we decided that we would work until noon and then take the rest of the day off. The fire danger level was still high and because of that all of the fire trailers were checked to make sure all of the fire trailers were working and full of water. They were all in good order and started quickly. We are able to keep the COSSA range open because of the fire trailers and must make sure they are in working order. The instructions for starting and running the fire trailers are in the metal box and the combination is always the present year, now Make sure you know how to use them. Because of the fire danger, we are trying to keep the weeds and grass cut down in the bays and around the buildings. Disciplines are also asked to keep the weeds and grass down in the bays they use and around their buildings. If you have noticed that the pit toilets are cleaner and more inviting, you can thank Steve Dunbar for that. He has been doing a bang up job on them. Those attending the work party were; Mike Conley, Ron Glover, Kevin Rees, Michael Brodie, Steve Dunbar, Ted Anderson, David Sweet, Eric Brown, Roy Shirakata, Larry Confer, Don Thomas, Bob Everson and Bill Lewis. The next work party will be on September 5 th and will start at 9 AM. If the weather cools down, we will try to get some work done on bay clearing and berm building. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES We are trying to get some of the structures painted and this is something that can be done on days other than the work party days. The Lady Hawks cover is the first one that needs painting. This is planned for a roll on paint job and the paint and the rollers are at the range and are waiting for volunteers. It will need a primer coat and at least 2 color coats. This means that there are three jobs to be done. NIGHT TRAINING Redmond Police Department will be holding training on September 13 and will be doing some night shooting on the Gong Range. HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND OPERATORS NEEDED We are expecting some big shoots next year and it is time to start getting the range cleaned up. It has been many years since we have had heavy equipment out at the range for cleanup and improvements. COSSA plans on renting at least a large front loader for cleanup and berm reconditioning. The plan is to rent the loader for one week, which means 40 hours of running. Therefore, we need to have enough operators signed up to get those 40 hours in during the week. Work can be done during the day or clear into the evenings. This work will be directed on cleanup of the existing bays. However, several of the pistol bays need to be leveled out clear to the end of the bay and this will require a cat with rippers to break up the hardpan that now exists in the bays. If any member has personal equipment, a cat, front loader, excavator or dump truck, that they can rent or donate use of to COSSA that can be left on the range for use over an extended period of time, that would be a great benefit. VOLUNTEER NEEDED COSSA will have a table to distribute COSSA literature and answer questions at the Gary Lewis seminar on deer hunting to be held at the Sportsman s Warehouse on September 12 from 6 to 8 PM. 3 EDDIE EAGLE TURNS 30 The Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Over the past 3 decades, it has taught over 30 million children simple and effective firearm-accident -prevention principles. Updated in 2015, program provides all materials free online at Eddie Eagle s Treehouse at Designed for children from pre-k to 4 th grade, Eddie Eagle delivers the safety message... If you see a gun: Stop! Don t Touch. Run away. Tell a grown up. NRA s long-standing rule on gun storage is to store guns so they are in accessible to ANY unauthorized users and especially children. Since the program was instituted, the targeted Eddie Eagle age group has seen a decline of approximately 80% in unintentional firearm fatalities according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Thus wrote Vernon Bailey in his book The Mammals and Life Zones of Oregon, published June So what happened to the buffalo in Oregon, this animal we call the American bison? And what happened to the vast herds of buffalo that roamed the Great Plains? You know what the history books say. But what really happened? Who can say? But that's the discussion for our membership meeting at the VFW Hall at 4th and Olney in Bend on September 13. Gary Lewis will provide a PowerPoint slide show with compelling images from the past and present. Gary Lewis and Bill Lewis will bring some examples of guns used for bison then and now. 8 AT THE SAFETY BENCH GLOCK Ka-BOOM! Serious and experienced pistol shooters and hand loaders have heard, and perhaps seen first hand, the infamous Glock Ka-Boom. It is a known fact that Glock 40 S&W and 10MM pistols (40 Cal: Glock model 22, 23, 24 and 27) and (10mm: Glock model 20, 29 and 40) are excellent pistols, have been carried by law nforcement, government agencies, hunters, sportsmen, and competition shooters for many, many years. The 10mm is a powerful cartridge developing 2 ½ times the stopping power of the.45 ACP, while the 40 S&W is more powerful than the 9 X 19 mm parabellum or 9mm luger cartridge that s been around for over a hundred years (introduced by Georg Luger in 1902). However, the Glocks in those particular calibers with reloaded bullets have been known to explode in the shooters hand, hence the Ka-BOOM, which is the subject of this article. When you buy your Glock, the manual that comes with the pistol warns that factory ammunition should always be used. But like many of us who reload, we find that this hobby produces custom rounds at a less expensive price and provides the shooter with a great hobby. The problem occurs when range brass, fired from Glock pistols, is used in the reloading process. When the subject Glocks fire a round, the unsupported portion of the chamber, located at the 6 o clock position when looking down the barrel, creates a bulge in the shell case, which weakens the integrity of the case. When reloaded, and if this weakened portion just happens to line up with the unsupported portion of the chamber, the round could explode into the magazine area and cause catastrophic failure in the pistol. I have seen this three times in my shooting career. While the pistols were toast, the shooters, thankfully survived with only cut hands and faces. (Another reason to wear safety glasses when shooting.) YouTube has many great videos on this subject: Google search YouTube: Glock Ka-Boom for even more on this subject. If you reload in these calibers and use Glock pistols, and aren t aware of this phenomenon, you owe it to yourself to get the best information available. PS: I shoot reloaded range brass 40 S&W in my Sig Sauer P229 all the time and have never had a problem.
