1 COSSA Bulletin June 2017 PRESIDENT S CORNER This month we have a great event planned for you and new member prospects. On Saturday June 24 th from 9:00-3:00 it s our OPEN HOUSE with firearms and ammo provided. Disciplines will be having demonstrations at timed stations for your convenience. The scheduled demonstrations will help you plan your day so that you may attend all of them or chose the ones you re most interested in. They will teach you all about their Discipline, demonstrate their drills and provide a shooting experience for you to try out. The schedule along with more information will be sent to you in an so keep an eye out for it next week. For members only, HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO SHOOT ON THE BLM RANGE? The BLM range will be open and run by Law Enforcement for your enjoyment. This will be for handguns only! Bring your own handgun/ammo for this unique opportunity. Remember COSSA is a cold range so arrive with your handguns unloaded please. As part of our Environmental Stewardship Program compliance, we will have Leland Brown at the range providing non-lead ammo for you to try out. With a greater number of private hunting ranches going to non-lead ammo, this is a great opportunity for you to try out and compare your lead ammo with the supplied FREE non-lead ammo. Bring your rifle/ammo, sight it in with your ammo then, try it with the non-lead ammo and compare. Ballistic gel tests will also be demonstrated. A list of provided manufacturers and calibers will be sent in an . The country radio station, The Bull 99.7 will be doing a live show at the range from Noon until 2. Meet some of your local firearms Instructors that work tirelessly to provide quality education for you. At their booths you can find information on private or group instruction, pricing and discuss classes or courses that are right for you. No matter if you re a beginner or an experienced tactical shooter, there will be an Instructor there to assist you on your journey to becoming proficient with your firearms. 2 FREE SHOOTING DAY All Ages are Welcome! The Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association will host an Open House and Outdoor Shoot Saturday, June 24, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the COSSA Park east of Bend. Volunteers will introduce shooters to the COSSA Park and to the shooting sports through the COSSA Kids program, Lady Hawks, Cowboy Action, Blackpowder Cartridge Rifle Clubs and more. The Oregon Zoo will provide sample nonlead ammunition for hunters to try in various calibers. Bring your hunting rifle! Topics taught will include: Safety, Handgun Fundamentals, Rimfire Shooting and Centerfire High Power Rifle. Firearms and ammunition will be provided by instructors. Alcohol is not allowed on the range and will not be tolerated. Please bring eye and ear protection. A VOLUNTEER in Action! THANK YOU BOB RENTSCH! This past winter our security gate electronics and battery power systems were challenged by the severe cold temperatures. Many thanks to Bob Rentsch for stepping up, engineering a solution and acting as project manager to install thermostatically controlled propane heat in the gate house. Given the lack of 110v power, Bob s ingenuity solved the problem and greatly improved the reliability of the gate and life of the equipment. When you see Bob at the range, tell him thank you! Contact Bill Lewis if you see an opportunity to make the range a better place or inquire about tasks needing help. JUNE GENERAL MEETING Please join us at our General Meeting on June 5 th. Our speaker will be Clint Baltor, speaking on the method of operation of the Central Oregon burglar. MAY WORK PARTY The May work party went very well, the weather started out cool but warmed up enough so that we had a good time. We had 12 members present and we got some good things done. The members were; Jim Crittenden, Eric Brown, Larry Confer, Ted Anderson, Doug Lowndes, Dennis Jones, Bob Lanter, Don Thomas, Roy Shirakata, Michael Brodie, Mike Casey and Bill Lewis. As you can see from this list and previous work party lists, we have many dedicated members that attend most of the work parties. However, we are looking for more volunteers and we need more help getting ready for the Open House, June 24. One of the projects for 2017 is to upgrade some of the Pit Toilets with new stools and the first of these was completed on that work party. The Pit Toilet near the shotgun area now has a new stool and looks much better. Now that we have the first one done, we hope to have the other 3 done by the Open House. We will also be concentrating on getting the range cleaned up and ready for the Open House. Members planning to attend the work party on June 14 are requested to bring weed eaters, chain saws, and small portable generators. Now that the weather has improved,(?) there will be projects such as painting and weed wacking, mowing the parking lots and clearing brush that can be done on days other than work party days. 3 RANGE REMINDERS OPEN HOUSE- June 24 th COSSA will be having an OPEN HOUSE. All members and the public is invited, so spread the word. Many of the disciplines will be having demonstrations including the BLM on Bay 17. The BLM demonstration should be very interesting and most members have never seen it in action. This is a primary training area for law enforcement, BLM, FBI, US Forest Service, IRS, and several more. Bring your friends and neighbors to watch all the fun and to have a great lunch. SHOT GUN AREA We have been working on the shotgun area at the work parties and all of the throwers have been repaired and are functioning okay. We have also had some problems with the setup of personal clay throwers interfering with the designated COSSA throwers. Therefore, an area to the right of the existing throwers has been setup for the use of personal throwers. Stakes presently outline the area and large signs will be put in place at the next work party. There will also be trees taken out and a road established to allow remote throwers to be placed downrange. We still have problems with the members using the shotgun area and not cleaning up. Please pick up your hulls and put them in the trash containers. However, clay bird boxes should not go in the trash barrels but should be flattened and put in the designated area for boxes at the shotgun area or in the white horse trailer near the training center. RANGE CLEANUP Since we are having an open house on June 24, we want the range to be as clean and orderly as we can get it. It is the duty of all members to pick up after themselves and to keep the range clean. It has been noted that several areas used by members have been left with targets, trash, and shotgun hulls and clay birds. Clay birds are not to be used without special permission in any of the areas outside the shotgun area. It would be a great help if members would pick up any trash that they find blowing around the range. FIRE DANGER The fire danger level is officially moderate but we have already had forest fires in the area. Please note that smoking is not allowed at COSSA Park unless in a vehicle or indoors. If you notice anyone smoking please inform of that rule. COSSA SIGNS Signs are for instructions and notices, SIGNS ARE NOT TO BE SHOT. Many of the signs on the gong range have bullet holes in them. Anyone found shooting ANY of the signs at COSSA Park will immediately lose their membership. Report anyone shooting signs to any board member. GREAT BASIN PRECISION RIFLE May 6 th, Saturday, we had 18 shooters for the Long Range Match that endured snow, wind and cold. We are very lucky to have such adverse weather. It makes you think and learn more about your rifle, scope windage and elevation adjustments. It may be frustrating at first, but you learn and become a better shooter. You will gain confidence. Make sure you make a wind chart and ballistic card. The Gas Gun shoot is the day after the Long Range Match. It is a fun shoot with multiple targets at different ranges out to 750 yards. One of our shooters made a video for the Long Range Match. Check it out. A Rod Campuzano, Match Director CONTRACTOR NEEDED COSSA is looking for a contractor to build a shelter for the Gong range. 7 AT THE SAFETY BENCH A recent and serious incident at the Shotgun Range pointed out the need for a review of the safety requirements for this range. This range is the ONLY range available to members that allows the use of shotguns and shot. Members may see the use of shotguns and shot at other bays when shooters are under the direction of COSSA Disciplines, working with trainers or participating in outside events. COSSA Park firearm safety rules are always in effect. o Shotguns brought to or removed from the firing line must be in an unloaded condition and encased. The shotgun must be immediately benched with the muzzle pointed down-range and the action open. o COSSA manual throwers are set up in fixed positions and are not to be moved. Care should be exercised to not impact Bay 18. o Use of personal throwers is allowed. An area east of the existing four throwers been designated for setting up personal throwers. Personal throwers can only be used in this area and is signposted accordingly. Care must be exercised in positioning so as to not impact other shotgun shooters in the neighboring positions to the west. No birds are to be flown over the roads to the south. o The COSSA manual throwers use a strong spring, Care should be exercised when cocking the throwing arm and the possibility of a premature release. o Shooters should take care of where the person operating the trap is positioned. o All four COSSA throwers can be used simultaneously by separate groups. It would be appropriate to liaise with the other groups before shooting to make sure everyone is aware of your presence. o Typically, there is no reason to go down range at the shotgun range. If the need arises and there are other shotgun shooters, coordinate calling of a cold range. GARY LEWIS WINS NOWA AWARDS At the latest conference of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association (NOWA), Gary Lewis, of Bend, Oregon, was presented with several awards in the group's Excellence in Craft contest. In Hunting/Shooting, Lewis was awarded a 1st place award for Nine Three, published in Sports Afield. This category was sponsored by Leupold and Stevens and it featured a rifle that was once owned by Chub Eastman, also a member of NOWA. The article was published in the May/June 2016 issue of Sports Afield. In Humor, Lewis won a 1st place for Good Vibrations, published in Oregon Hunter. Lewis won 2nd place for Audio with a radio show aired November 18, In the Excellence in Craft Audio/Visual category, Frontier Unlimited, a TV show, was awarded 2nd and 3rd Place for two episodes. And for the Book category, Fishing Central Oregon, 6th edition won a 2nd place award. Lewis is a columnist, TV host and author of 16 books. His articles appear in regional, national and international magazines. The Northwest Outdoor Writers Association is a society of professional outdoor communicators who are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence. Members write about and photograph a broad range of outdoor activities, and support the enjoyment and conservation of natural resources.
