1 COSSA Bulletin March 2019 A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to Keep and Bear Arms shall not be infringed. The Constitution of the United States of America Second Amendment 2019 ELECTION RESULTS Officer elections were held at the February general meeting. This is the first year that electronic ballets were sent out and the results were very good. The ballets returned were 3 times what we usually get with mail in ballots. It looks like this is the way to do the elections. We will have nominations in January of The results of the election were: President-Kent Neumann Vice-president-Mark Fero 2 nd Vice president- Ryan Goold Secretary-Rich Fleming Treasurer-Donna Hines Director at Large-Bill Lewis MARCH GENERAL MEETING When was the last time you did something for the first time? Have you begun or even considered prepping for a future catastrophic event in Central Oregon where you are left with no electricity, tap water, or fuel? We live near volcanoes and the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake area so let's learn how to prep for the worst that can actually happen here and let the "Zombie Apocalypse" stay on TV. Larry McGlocklin will present at the March 14 meeting at the VFW Hall in Bend. See you there at 7pm. RANGE CLOSURE The range has been officially closed at this time. The weather will determine when we can open it again. Do not attempt to enter. The old gate is locked to keep vehicles from getting stuck on the hill to the electronic gate. The opening will be only when the snow clears to keep the roads from being damaged from 4-wheel drive vehicles. Watch the web site for the opening announcement. WORK HOURS DRAWING WINNERS The February meeting is when we have the handing out of gift cards to the volunteers for working for COSSA. There are two methods of handing out prizes that we use. The first is those members that have the most volunteer hours and the second is by a drawing. The 3 members with the most work hours for COSSA were Mike Brady, Rod Campuzano and Eric Brown. The drawing winners this year were; Donna Hines, Don Thomas, Fred Newton, Bill Gebhardt, Mike Sandiford, Bob Fisher, Rick Williams, and Rich Fleming. We would like to thank these and all of the other members that volunteer throughout the year. Without you dedicated members we would not have the quality shooting range that we have. 2 WORK PARTY-FEBRUARY 2019 We had a big group of volunteers for the work party but we were restricted by the weather and could not do much. The usual tasks were preformed, trash pickup, toilet paper dispersed, all of the important stuff. One of the biggest jobs we got done was the cutting of the brush for the future Archery Range. We hope to have the first stage finished this year. Another of our big projects for this year is getting the berms and bays spruced up with our new front loader. It looks to me that the operators are having too much fun and we should be charging them for the ride. The upgrade on the Grader power steering was also finished and Denny Jones was also having too much fun. The volunteers for the work party were; Garnett Erickson, Mick Briscoe, Tom Andrade, Eric Brown, Ted Anderson, Michael Sandiford, Dennis Jones, Fred Newton, Roy Shirakata, Butch Eastman, Jim Crittenden, Jeremy Lewis, Jim Parker, Bob Emerson, Mike Brady, Doug Lowndes, Lynn Bettelyoun, Ed Ludwig, Don Thomas, Mike Conley, Michael Brodie, and Bill Lewis. Thank you all for coming. The March work party is slated for later in the month, March 20, but due to the snow accumulation at the range, that work party may be canceled. If it is canceled, a notice will be put on the web site and an blast will go out to all members. We will have a busy year this year and we will have a lot to do to get ready for the Area one USPSA match in June. SPORTSMAN S SHOW The Sportsman s Show is gone for another year. I believe the general attendance was down because of the weather. However, all of the COSSA members that agreed to come and man the booth were there and manned the booth well. Those volunteers were: Jim McNamara, Bill Gebhardt, Don Thomas, Linda Tibbits, Rich Weister, Tom Allen, Mark Fero, Doug Stout, Angelo Micheletti, Ryan Goold, Lynn Bettelyoun, Bob sheppard, Dick Weiss, Rod Campuzano, Kent Newmann and Bill Lewis. Thank you all for helping out. COSSA HI-POWER/F-CLASS CLINIC APRIL 20 AND 21 The COSSA Hi-Power Discipline is putting on a long range shooting clinic for two days, April 20 and 21. 3 RETURN OF THE LADY HAWKS After a couple of years hibernating, the Lady Hawks Discipline is gearing back up with the first session meeting Saturday April 13 from 10 AM to 2 PM in Bay 16, then every second Saturday of the month through October. The 2019 Lady Hawks will continue the tradition of providing an environment for women shooters of all levels and experiences who want to learn new skills, improve old ones, and test themselves while having a safe and fun time at COSSA Park. Lady Hawks is a discipline open to all women at least 18 years old who are, or who want to become, safe, responsible, and effective pistol shooters. At the entry level we will offer a hands-on and livefire class on the Fundamentals of Shooting for those who are new pistol shooters or who would like some quality refresher training. This class meets Oregon requirements for a concealed handgun permit application. A certificate will be presented to those who successfully complete the class. If your interest is in learning the fundamentals of safe and responsible pistol handling, this course provides a chance to work on them under the direct guidance of experienced instructors. For more experienced shooters who are ready to improve their skills or to learn new ones, in an adjacent bay there will be instructors to help assess those skills and provide advanced instruction and challenging skill drills in a clinic tailored to the shooter. There will be firing points available for open shooters who are past the fundamentals stage and want to work on your own. Experienced shooters attending their first Lady Hawks event will be asked to demonstrate minimum safe gun handling and shooting abilities before attending the skills clinic or open shooting.. Bring your own ammunition and pistol. Lady Hawks has some pistols available for the Fundamentals training if you don t have your own. Eye and ear protection are available for all shooters. Registration is required. Online registration and payment is preferred and opens the last week in March on the COSSA website. Registration at the range on the 13 th is on a space available basis. Individual fees payable at the time of registration are Fundamentals of Shooting Training - $25, Advanced Clinic - $15, and Open shoot - $10. Check the website for updates or ladyhawks@cossapark.com. CALL FOR LADY HAWK VOLUNTEERS We need experienced pistol instructors and volunteers who can help organize and run events for the Lady Hawks Discipline when it starts up on Saturday April 13. Lady Hawks provides an environment for women shooters of all levels and experiences who want to learn new skills, improve old ones, and test themselves while having a safe and fun time at COSSA Park. The goal is to teach safe, responsible, and effective pistol shooting techniques that encourage women to consider joining the other disciplines at COSSA. To do this we will be teaching a Fundamentals of Shooting course to new shooters and women who want to get a training certificate for a concealed handgun permit. For experienced shooters we ll be conducting Advanced Skills Clinics. The Fundamentals class will use a lesson plan similar to the NRA s Basics of Pistol Shooting class. Advanced Skills Clinic instructors will assess each experienced shooter s capabilities, then decide what skills need to be improved and how best to accomplish those improvements. The discipline will meet the second Saturday of each month April through October with setup starting about 9:30 AM and clean-up ending about 2 PM. There will be an initial organizational meeting around the middle of March for all who are interested in volunteering. The date and location will be announced closer to the date. In addition to instructors we need people to help with all the admin and logistics requirements of an event and to help ensure safety. If you re interested and/or want more details, Lady Hawks at ladyhawks@cossapark.com or contact Bill Lewis. COSSA Bulletin 3

8 AT THE SAFETY BENCH It never hurts to review the basics. (It can really hurt if you don t follow these rules either yourself or someone else.) Here are a few to ponder: Know your target and what is beyond. Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second. Know how to use the gun safely. Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun's mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling. Be sure the gun is safe to operate. Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it. Use only the correct ammunition for your gun. Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition.
