1 COSSA Bulletin HAPPY NEW YEAR! January 2016 PISTOL SILHOUETTE RANGE OFF LIMITS More damage has been found on the Pistol Silhouette range since the last newsletter declaring it off limits to casual shooting. Trash, shotgun hulks and fire remains were found in front of the pad. Damage to the berms behind the target stands by high power rifles was also noted. This is not acceptable. Any member found not following the policies laid down by the COSSA Board will be subject to discipline by that board. This could include loss of membership. Any member seeing violations of the board policies can report them to the board for disciplinary action and will remain anonymous. NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION Orientation- January orientation will be on January 30 at 10 Am at the Pine Mountain clubhouse. Any current members that wish to attend, call Ed Hauswald ELECTION Its election time again. New officers will be voted in at our February general meeting. Ballots will go out via in January after the board meeting. Ballots may be mailed in or brought to the February general meeting. JANUARY GENERAL MEETING Steve McCarty is coming back to do a presentation - The Terror of Andersonville - on January 14. McCarty's great great uncle died at Andersonville and he has studied the Civil War prison experience and will share it with COSSA members. 2 GREAT BASIN PRECISION RIFLE We had our last shoot November 21st. Twenty dedicated shooters that survived the cold weather. I think it was the best weekend of the month. No snow and clear weather. One shooter was smart enough to bring a moving blanket to cover up with while on the firing line. Five shooters from Leupold came out. They liked the long range shoot and how we have targets set up. J.R. and Jeff from Leupold are now in the 1 Mile Club. They also received their 1,760 yard Coin. Bob and David also hit the mile target again. Leupold gave them mat pads for their shooting mats, for hitting the mile target. For the regular shoot; John, 1st place. Steve, 2nd place. Mike, 3rd place. Bob, 4th place. Dell, 5th place. Randy, 6th place. Doug Kinsey, Distributor, Central and Eastern Oregon brought out a display of CherryBalmz weapon lubricants. He also brought samples to the General COSSA meeting, which I was lucky enough to pick up some. It is a new product that looks very good. They even have a winter balm. I will be using this balm on all my weapons. Check out their website These local guns shops will be carrying their products: Double Tap Redmond Black Rifle Trigger Happy Gun Traders Exotic Firearms Sun Mountain Gunsmithing Lost Creek Armory If you do both shoots will be $25.00 for match fee or either one will be $15 each. Both shoots will be on Saturdays. Starts at 7:30 am. I am going to do the Long Range 1,000-1,760 yards starting at 7:30 am. The regular shoot possibly out to 1,300 yards begins after the Long Range. Match fee $15. I am trying something different. I will also add one more shoot for semi-auto or just another rifle of yours. Most targets will be 600 yards and closer. Match fee $15. COSSA Bulletin 2
3 AT THE SAFETY BENCH COSSA Park depends on the COSSA members as individuals using common sense and courtesy as cornerstones for safe shooting. The key to the safe enjoyment of all shooting sports is a personal sense of responsibility not only for one s self, but for the safety of all persons on the range. Our New Member Orientation sessions have raised the issue of How do I deal with a situation that makes me uncomfortable or appears to be a clear violation of COSSA s Safety Manual or COSSA s User Guide? We have all been there in that awkward moment! Obviously if a blatant situation is at hand a shout of CEASE FIRE is clearly in order. Our manual requires all to immediately stop firing, remove ones finger from the trigger guard, the pointing of firearms downrange and await further instruction. Less immediate situations can be addressed by communication. One technique that has been suggested is to ask for help. If you turn to the folks or group that is making you uncomfortable or feeling unsafe say: I need some help as I am uncomfortable about fill in the blank. Try not to accuse someone of being unsafe as that quickly makes folks defensive. No one wants to be told they are wrong. Remember we also communicate not only by words but through tone of voice and through gesture, posture and facial expression. A smile goes a long way. As COSSA members we all have a role in safety. When you are at the range, a friendly hello and how s it going upon arrival can make all the difference to a enjoyable and safe day at COSSA Park. Remember by our procedures, YOU and only YOU are the Range Safety Officer! DECEMBER WORK PARTY The December work party was canceled due to the extreme weather. However, there were several that braved the weather and showed up to keep COSSA going. Eric Brown and Fred Newton fired up the burn pile and got rid of all of our burnable trash; they also took the garbage trailer in and dumped that. Bob Elliott showed up and helped pick up garbage and cleaned up the Public range. Rich Fleming showed up to continue his ongoing fight with a pack rat in the Shotgun outhouse and prevailed. Rich eliminated the rats nest and returned the outhouse to its spick and span state. Much appreciated Rich. Other members showed up but did not leave their names, but their dedication is appreciated also. During the winter months, it is best to check the COSSA website and the calendar for any work party cancelations. NO FIRES Fires are not allowed at COSSA Park unless they are in a stove or barbeque. NO OPEN fires at the range. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PUBLIC RANGE UPKEEP Norm Rife, one of our charter and pioneer members has been taking care of the Public range for almost 20 years and he needs a rest. We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers that will take care of the public range. The work parties empty the garbage and make repairs at least once a month. However, the range is being used much more now and it needs attending at least once a week. I am looking for anyone willing to help, several volunteers would lighten the load. 7 POSSE CHRISTMAS PARTY ANOTHER CHANCE TO BE TOGETHER! By Palaver Pete The Pine Mt. Posse Christmas party and white elephant gift exchange was held on Sunday December 13th at the Phoenix Restaurant in Bend. This year the posse decided to have an afternoon party so that members could drive to and from the party in a reasonably safe time zone. The plan was to have an early morning shoot, then adjourn to the restaurant for the party, but because of the heavy snow at the range, the shoot was canceled, and the party was held from 1:30 to 4:30. Once again the posse picked up the tab for all attending members. The Legend and Diamond Willow The Chuck Wagon menu was mind boggling, with choice of Halibut Fish and Chips, or a half rack of pork ribs with traditional BBQ sauce, and of course the obligatory French fries. But wait, that s not all Steak Bento and Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo were also offered, so members really had a delicious assortment from which to choose. Main courses were accompanied by a choice of a small dinner salad, Caesar salad or soup great menu indeed. Our thanks go to Arctic Annie and Diamond Willow for making the party arrangements. This festive occasion was used to announce our newly elected Posse Board Members, as follows: Marshall Side Kick Rick Deputy Marshall Whispering Wade Banker--Shevlin Kid Bookkeeper--Diamond Willow Territorial Governor--Sunrise Bill Telegraph Operator-- Diamond Willow Newspaper editor--palaver Pete After lunch, the dis-orderly White Elephant Gift Exchange was held, and most members managed to keep (hide) the gifts they really wanted. Well, that s it for now Pards. Next shoot will be on Sunday, January 10 th at 10am. Hoss Reese will be doing the stages. Remember this: "Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans."
