2 ARMSTRONG RECYCLING CeNter Armstrong County, PA Recycling Center The Recycling Center, located on Route 85 east of Kittanning at the Armsdale Complex, opened in early spring Since that time, over 15,200 tons of material have been collected from individuals and businesses with the number continuing to grow daily. The Armstrong Recycling Center is a joint effort between the County of Armstrong and the Progressive Workshop. The Armstrong Recycling Center operates a Circuit Rider Program and Permanent Recycling Trailer Collection Sites. Materials Collected The following materials can be taken to the Armstrong Recycling Center, Circuit Rider Truck or Trailer Sites: newspaper aluminum cans steel cans office paper #1 & #2 plastic bottles & jugs corrugated cardboard green, clear & amber glass bottles & jars used motor oil (center only) Materials should be separated, dry and free of contamination. The following are prohibited: food contaminated materials, wet paper products, containers with automobile fluid, pesticides, and other hazardous chemical containers, plastic containers that are not labeled with a #1 or #2, window glass or ceramics. The Progressive Workshop The Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County Inc. is a private non-profit vocational rehabilitation facility. The Workshop provides vocational rehabilitation services to adults 18 years of age and older, who have a diagnosed physical, emotional or mental disability that hinders them from employment in the community. Through sub-contract work from a diverse group of companies, individuals are trained in a wide variety of tasks that incorporate different skill levels. Work is paid based on a time study done for each task. This valuable training program is best described as a win-win situation. Businesses benefit from an additional labor force and our trainees benefit from the paid hands-on work experience. Individualized training and job development is used as part of the trainee s ultimate goal of employment in the community. The Recycling Center provides individuals from the Workshop with additional skills training to help reach that goal. We currently have approximately 120 individuals receiving vocational training at the Progressive Workshop.

3 Circuit Rider Program The Recycling Center offers a circuit rider program for those unable to get to the center during normal hours of operation and for the convenience of customers looking for a staffed collection site. The circuit rider program began in 1995 with the implementation of the Worthington site. Additional collection sites have been added to meet the needs of the residents. The current circuit rider collection sites are listed to the right. The dates and times that the circuit rider will be visiting your area are listed in the calendar. Due to inclement weather, the circuit rider program is not in operation during January and February. However, the permanent recycling trailer collection sites as well as the Center are available year round. A list of the permanent recycling trailer sites are on the next page. Circuit Rider Sites Listed below are the individual circuit rider site locations: Borough - Stanford Home Center Plaza Brady s Bend Township - Brady s Bend Municipal Building East Franklin Township - Mall Parking Lot Elderton Borough - Elderton Fire Hall Mahoning Township - Distant Fire Hall

4 Permanent Recycling Trailer Sites In 2003, the Department of Planning and Development along with the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County conducted a study to determine how the recycling program could better serve the County s residents. From this study, it was determined that the implementation of 24-hour collection sites would best serve the public. Therefore, with the help from a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Grant, the permanent drop-off trailer program was born. The sites are available 24-hours per day 7-days a week. The program started with three sites and has now expanded to ten locations. Trailer Sites: Listed below are the individual trailer sites: Cowanshannock Township - Old Cowanshannock Township Shed on 2nd Street NuMine Dayton Borough - beside the Dayton Fire Hall East Franklin Township - Cowansville Substation of the East Franklin Fire Department Elderton Borough - beside Boyer Family Chiropractic Ford City Borough - corner of 11th Street and 3rd Avenue Freeport Borough - Lower Market Street by the sewage treatment plant Madison Township - Madison Township Maintenance Building Parker City - Phillips Municipal Park South Buffalo Township - Northpointe Tech Center rear parking lot Worthington/West Franklin - Worthington/West Franklin Fire Hall Please call the Armstrong Recycling Center at for additional information.
