19 RECYCLING CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Recycling has a big impact on the environment and you! Consider the following facts: Recycling is good earth stewardship Implementing effective environmental practices, such as recycling, can have economic rewards. Residential household recycling also helps communities meet state and local recycling goals. Recyclables are the raw materials for many new products. Recycled paper supplies over 37 percent of the raw material for use in making new paper products. A high percentage of office paper is recycled into products such as cereal boxes, tissue, printing and writing paper. Every ton of paper recycled saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. Currently more paper is recovered for recycling than is land filled. A regular automobile tire is made from five gallons of oil, but by recycling we reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Recyclables have monetary value. RECYCLING SEARCH ENGINE is a comprehensive website which a detailed database of recyclers available in the United States. The site has updates with the latest database. The search can be based on the recycler, recycling material, area or city. 16
20 ROADWAY LITTER 1. Litter affects everyone in Richland County. 2. Litter destroys the beauty of our communities. 3. Litter can be washed into waterways and into groundwater causing environmental damage. 4. Neighborhoods that are heavily littered may experience more vandalism or other crimes. 5. Litter impacts real estate values and hinders economic development. 6. Government and business spend large sums of money for roadside litter cleanups. 7. Litter can be prevented by simply acting responsible, Please, Do Not Litter! The Authority requests that all Richland County residents help clean up roadside litter during the Earth Stewardship months of April and May.
