The show allows artists to create pieces of art out of everyday trash, which normally ends up in the landfill. Artists use everything from satellite dishes, to old bikes, wire, junk mail & old wood. The event was held at the Platte River Mall. The art show allows us to celebrate America Recycles Day, a national event made possible by Keep America Beautiful. The public was asked to vote on their favorite pieces. Best of Show: 1st- Joe Ruhlman Mom and Dad s Swing (a staircase banister recovered from a demolished building) 2nd- Holly Carlini Picture their Joy (Scrap Copper Wire and a Pottery Barn Magazine) 3rd- Gene Gilsdorf Warped Wood (scrap wood) Most Creative Use of Recycled Material: 1st Gene Gilsdorf- Warped Wood (scrap wood) 2nd Cynthia Gutschenritter Gate of Life ( gate, doorknobs, glass dishes, rakes) 3rd - John Gutschenritter- Bowl of Nuts (nuts and bolts) Best Youth Piece 1st- Trace Tobiasson- Recycle Man 2nd Zane Newland- Grasshopper 3rd- Ashton Schiel- Recycle Guy Join the Cycle and Recycle! 2 Page 2 E-Cycle (Electronic Recycling) Beautiful News ABC Recycling, Westfield Shopping Center and Nebraskaland National Bank partnered with KNPLCB on October 25th for an Electronic Recycling and Paper Destruction Event. In four hours the groups captured 5 tons of electronic waste and paper, that would likely end up in the landfill. According to the EPA, only 25% of electronic waste is recycled every year, the rest ends up in the landfill. In North Platte, ABC Recycling accepts everything from computers and TVs to small electronics and small appliances. KNPLCB held their 5th annual 5K in September during North Platte s Railfest. The Water Run is a great fundraiser for KNPLCB and it helps to promote clean water in our community. Keep it clean it all runs downstream is a theme with this event that helps remind residents to keep storm drains free of pollutants like oil, fertilizers and chemicals. During the race, board members handed out information and t-shirts to 127 runners. Kids started the event with a 1 mile run. The 5K route started at the Spike, continued down A street, back to the Spike. KNPLCB was thrilled to see the participation and excitement for this event and we look forward to next year!
3 Mural Bottle Caps will make beautiful art at Eisenhower Elementary! Fifth graders at Eisenhower Elementary have begun their very own recycled bottle cap mural. Students begun collecting bottle caps from residents and classmates for an 8 foot by 4 foot mural that will hang in their hallways. KNPLCB will help students design and construct the giant mural of an eagle. Students learn more about repurposing, recycling and different ways to take care of the environment through this project. Volunteers We want to give a big Thank You to all our volunteers who spend hours painting, digging, planting, hauling, recycling, directing traffic and handing out food and water at events. Our projects would not be possible without the dedication and willingness of those who volunteer! A special thank you goes out to the missionaries at the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. They ve worked hard at numerous projects and events and it s greatly appreciated by KNPLCB!
4 Page 4 Festival of Trees Beautiful News KNPLCB s ELF TREE won Best Homemade Tree and Best of Festival at the Quality Inn and Suites Festival of Trees Fundraiser. Log onto Facebook for more pictures. This event is a great opportunity to share ideas about reusing and upcycling trash! All ornaments were made from Pool noodles, light bulbs and old material. Kids Discover Day Over 300 pumpkins were created at KNPLCB s booth during Kids Discover Day this October. Kids constructed pumpkins made out of old Halloween cards. The event is a great way to teach kids and their parents about reusing items instead of tossing them away. The crafts were fun and easy and families always look forward to our booth every year to see what creative crafts they can make with their kids. NPCC Knights Softball girls also volunteered to help kids create! Fall Rural Road trash walks KNPLCB relies on the Rural Roadside Cleanup Program to keep the outlying community clean. This is part of Keep America Beautiful s Great American Cleanup Program. Twice a year, groups are paid by the mile to clean up rural roads. It s not an easy job...some cover 12 miles at a time. And they pick up everything from roadside litter to electronics. This spring alone, groups picked up 5,490 pounds of trash on 33 routes. Curbside Bins Just a reminder that all paper (bagged), aluminum, steel cans, cardboard and #1 and #2 plastics can be put in your curbside bins. Call Municipal Light & Water for your free yellow lidded curbside bin today!
5 Page 5 Books KNPLCB will donate environmental books to the NP Library this year through Litter-ature grant dollars provided by the NDEQ. Books will also be donated to the Salvation Army, Bridge of Hope and other local organizations. Keep Nebraska Beautiful State Conference This year's Keep Nebraska Beautiful Conference was held August at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Historic Haymarket in Lincoln. Keep America Beautiful's President and CEO, Jennifer Jehn, attended to help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary. The conference concluded with the Keep Nebraska Beautiful Environmental Awards Luncheon and 50th Anniversary Celebration. TIS THE SEASON FOR YULETIDE YARDS 2014!!
