1 The Town of Maiden Summer 2017 Special points of interest: Yard of the Month Winners Town Services Fall Festival 2017 Inside this issue: Yard of the Month 2 Town Services 2 Street Department 3 Winter Sports 3 New Employees 4 Fall Festival 5 Greetings from the Mayor Dear Citizens- After reviewing the Town s newsletter, I decided some changes were necessary. Maiden is a vibrant and growing community which should be reflected in our newsletter. We are partnering with a local printer who can produce a high-quality newsletter for the same price as the old format. We are also updating our website to be more mobile friendly keeping our citizens informed is one of my top priorities. Maiden has witnessed the expansion or creation of several new businesses this year. The Council and I would like to welcome 3 Hermanos Mexican Restaurant, Times Oil, Hardees, Sew Unique Boutique, Pool Patch Pros and Joe s Snow. We continue to look for economic development opportunities which will expand our tax base, create jobs and support local businesses. 2 The Town of Maiden Page 2 Yard of the Month Winners The Summer is behind us now but we wanted to recognize the Yard of the Month Winners from July, August and September. July s Yard of the Month winner is Jonathan and Brooke Schneider of 109 Brentwood Drive. The winner for September is of August Yard of the Month

The Street Department also collects brush, leaves and grass clippings from your curb. This department is responsible for lawn maintenance and snow removal on Town owned properties.

3 The Town of Maiden Page 3 Town of Maiden Street Department The Town of Maiden Street Department helps keep the town safe and beautiful. One of the primary responsibilities of the Street Department is to repair or remove any hazard that may exist on or in the Town s roads or sidewalks. The Street Department also collects brush, leaves and grass clippings from your curb. This department is responsible for lawn maintenance and snow removal on Town owned properties. The Street Department is here to serve the citizens of Maiden and strive to keep the Town clean and beautiful. Thank you, Coaches! The youth baseball and softball seasons have concluded and the Recreation Department would like to thank all the coaches who made this season a success. Without the volunteers generously giving their time, our programs would not be possible. The 2017 Spring head coaches are: T-Ball Tim Woodliff, Von Willfong and Marty Beal. Baseball Brandon Helms, JR Rembert, Brandon Lackey, Brent Jenkins, Kevin Spiva, David Williams, Nink Harwell, Chuck Swink and Jason Huffman. Softball Damon Rice, Katrina Robinson, Brad Wimberly, Daniel Smalling and Brent Taillon. Again, our department would like to extend a huge thank you for your time and effort. Winter Sports Registration Registration for youth basketball for boys and girls will begin on Friday, September 15th and will conclude on Monday, October 16th. The divisions for youth basketball are based on your child s current grade and are as follows: Kindergarten 2nd Grade (Coed), 3rd 5th Grade (Boys and Girls Divisions), 6th 8th Grade (Boys and Girls Divisions) and year old (Boys Division Only). The league is comprised of teams from Maiden Recreation, Startown Optimist, Balls Creek Optimist, Sherrills Ford Optimist and Bunker Hill Optimist. Practice typically begins the second week of November and games start during the month of December. The season for most divisions will conclude during the end of February. Early Registration will be held at the Maiden Recreation Department on Friday, September 15th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. only. Register on this day and receive $5.00 off each registration.

4 The Town of Maiden Page 4 Maiden, NC 19 N. Main Avenue Maiden, NC A Town with a Future Maiden Hires New Employees This year the Town hired several new employees. In January, the Town hired two new police officers, Brittany Broadwater and Thomas Evans. Broadwater and Evans completed Basic Law Enforcement Training at Catawba Valley Community College. Evans is a native of Newton and graduated from Bandys High School. Broadwater comes to Maiden from West Virginia. Broadwater said, The community in Maiden has exceeded my expectations in the amount of kindness I have been met with considering the world s view of law enforcement these days. Evans, said, the best thing about Maiden is the community everyone is down to earth. In February, the Town hired Elizabeth Krige as Town Clerk and HR Officer after Wendy Vanover retired with more than eighteen years of service to the Town. Krige worked in the insurance industry for nine years before coming to Maiden. Krige completed the Master of Public Administration program at Appalachian State University. Krige said, It has been a great pleasure to get to know our employees and serve the citizens of Maiden. Samantha Weichel also joined the Town in February as a Customer Service Representative. Weichel has an Associate of Science degree. Weichel is always happy to greet citizens in the drive thru, front window or on the phone. Weichel said, I have really enjoyed meeting the citizens of Maiden and getting to know them. In May, the Town hired Blake Wright as Planning and Zoning Director. Wright graduated from Appalachian State University in December with a Master of Public Administration. Before joining the Town, Wright worked for the City of Hickory. Wright said, I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to lead the Department of Planning and Zoning. Contact the Rec at Maiden Recreation Provides a Variety of Activities At the Rec Department, you and your family have many options for exercise and fun. Zumba Zumba is a great way to exercise while having fun in the process. Zumba classes are held every Monday and Wednesday night from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Maiden Recreation Center. The classes are lead by certified instructors Angela Sigmon, Julie Dixon, Carol Wilson and Mariah Duncan. Come out and enjoy the fun while getting in shape. Tumbling Instructor Amanda Howard conducts two tumbling classes every Wednesday evening in the gym at the Maiden Recreation Center. Kindergym is from 5:30 6:00, for children 2 5 years old. The focus of this class is on body position, balance, coordination and basic tumbling skills. The fee for this class is $20.00 / month. Tumbling Class is for children 5 years old and up. The class is conducted from 6:00 7:00. Tumbling skills are practiced as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. The fee for this class is $30.00 / month. Karate Johnny Stinson is a 7th Degree Black Belt with over 40 years of teaching experience in Martial Arts. Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday for beginners from 6:00 7:00 pm and for the advanced from 7:00 8:30 pm. Classes are offered for Japanese Skotokan, Okinawan Weapons, American Free Style Karate, physical fitness, self-control, meditation and self defense for men, women and children. Contact the Rec at
