1 From the Director... We hope you enjoy our February Parks Department Newsletter. In this issue you will see a recap of our largest winter basketball league we have ever had, a listing of all the outstanding tournaments we have coming up in the month of March and an update on some of the winter projects and trainings that our maintenance staff has worked on this winter. As the spring season begins you will see many upgrades and ongoing projects in our parks and you ll see the busiest schedule that our city has ever seen. I could not be more proud to help play a small role along with our staff to try and help keep our Parks Department at the top of the list in our state! We look forward to seeing you at the park soon! 6 Photos: Playground Safety Training through TRPA Several of our Parks maintenance employees have participated in trainings over the winter. We sent 6 employees to a one-day Turf Management Class hosted by Franklin TN Parks. We sent two employees to an 8-hour course to prepare them to test for their TN State Applicators License and both employees successfully passed. We also have two employees that attended a three -day Playground Safety Inspector course hosted in a joint effort between Hendersonville Parks and TRPA. Additionally, next month we will be sending two employees for a one-day Park Maintenance TOSHA Compliance course and one employee is planning to attend an upcoming three-day ADA Training for Parks & Recreation facilities. We are very grateful to have so many opportunities to increase our knowledge and skills through education. STAFF HIGHLIGHT Cindy Hamblen RECREATION SUPERVISOR Cindy received her Bachelors Degree in Special Education and a Master's degree in

She has been teaching in special education for 40 years and began working part-time in the Parks Department the summer of 1979

Cindy says, I knew I wanted to be out there with the programs and participate in all that they do.

I was teaching and I was noticing that my special needs students spoke of never being on a team, getting a uniform, jersey, etc.

It broke my heart that they had never had the opportunity to play a game and get a uniform.

9 STAFF HIGHLIGHT Cindy Hamblen RECREATION SUPERVISOR Cindy received her Bachelors Degree in Special Education and a Master's degree in Specialist Reading, both from MTSU. She has been teaching in special education for 40 years and began working part-time in the Parks Department the summer of 1979 directing the Kiddie Kamp program at that time. She was hired to oversee all the children s recreation programs in Cindy says, I knew I wanted to be out there with the programs and participate in all that they do. The RAPTORS Special Needs Sports program began in I was teaching and I was noticing that my special needs students spoke of never being on a team, getting a uniform, jersey, etc. My family was full of sports enthusiasts and we played ball all the time. It broke my heart that they had never had the opportunity to play a game and get a uniform. One of my fellow teachers, Karen Shepard, agreed to help me and I approached the Civitan league and they agreed to include RAPTORS Baseball in their schedule. We have been going strong since that time, adding Kickball and Basketball, and eventually the league was incorporated in the Parks Department programs. Cindy also heads up other Parks activities including the annual Preschool Track Meet, Spring Fling, Summer Funtastiks Camp, and Lunch with Santa. She is married to Henry Hamblen and has four grown children, three sons and a daughter. Her first grandson just turned one in January.
