3 Some Game Themes: To Texas they go looking to improve to 2-0 The Wildcats bring with them the nation s leading offense (OK, it was just one game) led by a redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon surrounded by experience on the offense line and a bevy of receiving targets They will be greeted by a confident bunch of Roadrunners, welcoming a Pac-12 opponent to the Alamodome for the first time One of the most experienced teams in the country, UTSA dominated Houston in its opener and will be hungry to improve upon that effort. It s a veteran squad that surely won t be intimidated at home, while Arizona will have its first test in an unfriendly environment Playing in a dome will be something new for the Wildcats, who are accustomed to more spacious outdoor stadiums across the Pac-12 footprint It s been some time since UA ventured into Texas for a regular season game, and only a pair of current players hail from the Lone Star State Something that could play a factor is the short turnaround for both teams, who are playing on a Thursday after opening on Friday last week. UTSA has the benefit of playing at home, but did have to play on the road last week Arizona ran the ball well against a hapless UNLV team, but that task may be more difficult this week. The Cats will want their big guys up front with more than 100 career starts to set the tone in the trenches One thing lacking a week ago was pressure along the defensive front, and controlling the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball will be a vital part of the game, too When the ball is kicked, a Thursday night national television audience will tune in to see Arizona and UTSA kick off Week 2 of the college football slate. Enjoy. Last Week: Arizona answered plenty of questions at least for the time being with a record-setting performance that handed visiting UNLV a defeat Some doubted whether Arizona s offense could pack the punch it has in recent years, but Anu Solomon rose to the occasion and became the first freshman quarterback to ever start a season opener for the Wildcats. Solomon finished with 425 yards a school freshman record and four touchdowns without an interception, while he totaled 475 total offense yards The loss of two-time All-American running Ka Deem Carey did not hold back the running game, either. Senior Terris Jones-Grigsby racked up 124 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and freshman Nick Wilson showed star potential with 104 yards on seven totes, including an 85-yard scoot The one known commodity was a wealth of talent at receiver, and 10 players collected a reception. It was a welcomed site to see Austin Hill return from an ACL that sidelined him a year ago, and the reward was a 92-yard touchdown reception to pace a 110-yard performance Sophomore Samajie Grant turned in his first career 100-yard receiving game and dazzled with a 63-yard scoring play of his own Junior kicker Casey Skowron showed promise in his debut, booting 3-of-4 field goals (long of 49) and all seven point after tries. His tally of 16 points matched a school single-game record for points by kicking The defense gave up some yards in the first half, but steadied in the second half and surrendered just one touchdown all night Scooby Wright led the charge with eight tackles and a sack as the anchor in the middle of the defense, while a handful of new faces filled out a unit that seems deeper compared to the last couple of seasons In the end, a 787-yard offensive performance was the noteworthy nugget, and for good reason. It shattered the school record by nearly 100 yards and was the most for any school in a season opener against an FBS opponent in the 2000s Having a pair of 100-yard receivers and 100-yard rushers in the same game was notable, too, but so were many of the superlatives. As is the case in any season, the mission of going 1-0 was accomplished, and the Wildcats have now won seven-straight season-openers and 13 of the last 15. A Nu Era: In his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Anu Solomon turned in one of the best quarterback performances in school history, regardless of his experience. The four-time Las Vegas high school state champion completed 25-of-44 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. While he overshot a few targets early, the cool-headed Solomon settled in nicely by trusting his bevy of receivers. By halftime, Solomon had already spread the ball to nine different players with touchdown tosses to sophomores Nate Phillips (39 yards), Samajie Grant (63 yards) and DaVonte Neal (13 yards). The first scrimmage play of the second half was a 92-yard throw-and-catch to Austin Hill, and the rout was on from there. Solomon s 425 passing yards established a new freshman record (previously held by Keith Smith 418 at California in a four overtime game in 1996). The yardage also tied Nick Foles mark for ninth-most in UA single game history. His big-play prowess averaged out to 17.0 yards per completion, a new single-game school record for a quarterback with 20 or more completions. Additionally, Solomon displayed play-making ability with his feet as he collected 50 rushing yards on eight carries. Altogether, Solomon netted 475 total offense yards to claim the No. 4 spot in UA single-game history. First Time For Everything: With his start against UNLV, Anu Solomon became the first freshman (true or redshirt) to start a season opener for the Wildcats. The debut also snapped a string of 51-straight games that Arizona trotted out an upperclassman to start at the position and also marked the first start for a freshman since Willie Tuitama earned the nod in the final four games of the 2005 season. Solomon established a new freshman passing record with 425 yards and, in the process, tied Nick Foles for the ninth-most in school single-game history. Quick Nick: True freshman running back Nick Wilson turned some heads in his debut last weekend against UNLV. The rookie ran just seven times, but netted 104 yards highlighted by an 85-yard touchdown burst through the heart of the Rebel defense. Arizona s last freshman to run for 100 yards was Keola Antolin, who gained 114 markers on 25 carries against Oregon State on Nov. 22, Interestingly, Antolin was a graduate of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev., the same school that produced current quarterback Anu Solomon. In his first game as UA s place kicker, Skowron converted 3-of-4 field goal tries (made: 28, 49 and 39; missed: 38) and all seven extra point attempts. Added up, it was 16 points by kicking, which ties the school record set last season by Skowron s predecessor, Jake Smith. Coincidentally, Smith set the mark against UNLV last year in Las Vegas. It should also be noted that Skowron placed seven of his 11 kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks, helping limit the Rebels to an average starting field position at their own 24-yardline. Still Streaking: With the departure of two-time consensus All-American Ka Deem Carey, it would have been fair to question whether Arizona would have a 100-yard rusher against UNLV. Well, the Wildcats didn t have one. They had two. Senior Terris Jones-Grigsby topped the century mark by halftime and finished with 124 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while true freshman Nick Wilson added 104 yards and a touchdown on seven totes. Together they racked up 228 yards on 20 rushes, an absurd 11.4 yards per carry. With the dual effort, Arizona produced a 100-yard rusher for an 18th consecutive game and has done so in 24 of 27 games under Rich Rodriguez. 4x100: No, we re not talking track. Arizona had four players notch 100-yard rushing or receiving performances last Friday against UNLV. Running backs Terris Jones-Grigsby (13-124, TD) and Nick Wilson (7-104, TD) each surpassed 100 rushing yards, while Austin Hill (3-110, TD) and Samajie Grant (4-101, TD) went over the century mark for receiving yards. It s surely the first time in school history that the Wildcats have had two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers in the same game. The rushing feat has been done several times in the last couple years by QB-RB duos of Matt Scott or B.J. Denker with Ka Deem Carey. But perhaps more notable is the last time two running backs totaled 100 yards together was when Mike Bell (16-153, TD) and Gilbert Harris (16-113, TD) helped upset undefeated and seventh-ranked UCLA on Nov., 5, In the air, Hill and Grant became the first UA receiving tandem to record 100-yard efforts in the same game since Hill and Dan Buckner each collected 100-yard outputs in Rich Rodriguez s first game at Arizona against Toledo in Arizona Fast: As the YouTube video released this summer by UA s video department suggests, Arizona likes to play as fast as it can. The Wildcats wasted no time proving that against UNLV en route to a school record 787 yards on 94 plays, which were more offensive snaps than in any game a season ago. If you blinked, you might have missed some highlights. Arizona had touchdown drives of 38 seconds, 40 seconds, 14 seconds and 13 seconds. The offense never had a three-and-out, unless it scored. Indeed, four of the seven touchdown drives needed three plays or fewer. As Rich Rodriguez says, you won t see the Wildcats standing in a huddle holding hands and singing kumbaya. New Look Defense: Arizona s defense featured a handful of new faces in the starting lineup. Along the defensive line, LSU transfer Jordan Allen started at end and Boise State transfer Jeff Worthy started at nose guard. The Wildcats also welcomed back senior tackle Dan Pettinato, a 12-game starter in his career, who did not make any starts a season ago after being slowed early in the year with injuries. At the second level, outside linebackers Cody Ippolito and Jake Matthews each made their first career starts, while redshirt freshman Jarvis McCall Jr. made his debut as a starting corner. Defense Tightened Up: It was not a dominating effort by the UA defense, but with a handful of new faces it appeared the unit steadily improved throughout last Friday s game against UNLV. The Rebels netted 245 total yards in the first half and then scored their only touchdown on a 75-yard drive to begin the third quarter, but the Wildcat defense surrendered only 46 more yards the rest of the game over six drives. Included were four three-and-outs and the first turnover of the season, which came courtesy of safety William Parks who hauled in his third career interception. One strong area throughout the course of the game: third down defense. The Rebels converted only 4-of-15 chances on third down and were 0-for-1 on fourth down. Move the Chains: Arizona picked up 32 first downs against UNLV more than in any single game a season ago. A key factor was success on third downs, when the Wildcats converted 11-of-21 opportunities. Quarterback Anu Solomon showed plenty of poise in such situations, completing 9-of-14 pass attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown, plus picked up a first down with a 31-yard scramble. Texas Ties: It is an unfamiliar trip this week for Arizona, which has not played a regular season game in the Lone Star State since the turn of the millennium. The Wildcats did play in the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl (36-10 loss to Oklahoma State), but no players or coaches remain in the program from that game. Prior to 2010, the last visit to Texas for an Arizona football team was a victory over TCU on Sept 5., 1999, at Fort Worth. The Wildcats have only a few players with Texas ties, notably tight end Josh Kern, who is a native of San Antonio. Other close ties include receiver Cayleb Jones a native of Austin, Texas and reserve quarterback Connor Brewer as each transferred to Arizona from the University of Texas. One other connection includes receiver Austin Hill, whose father (David Hill) and uncle (Jim Hill) both grew up in San Antonio and played college football at what is now Texas A&M University Kingsville. David was a tight end that went on to an NFL career with the Lions and Rams, while Jim played defensive back for the Packers and the Chargers Arizona Football Game 2 at UTSA

5 Big Plays: Arizona s offense capitalized on a handful of big plays last week, including four touchdown plays of 39 or more yards. That included Nick Wilson s 85-yard run and Anu Solomon s pass to Austin Hill, who raced 92 yards for a score. The throw-and-catch happens to be the longest scoring play for Arizona since Travis Cobb turned in a 100-yard kickoff return in an upset of Iowa in Considering only offensive plays, the Wildcats had not produced a play of at least 92 yards since That highlight was also a 92-yard pass play when Nic Costa tossed to Andrae Thurman in a home loss to UCLA on Nov. 9. First Impressions: As noted, it had been a while since Arizona started a freshman quarterback in a game with Willie Tuitama being the last in Anu Solomon s debut is undeniably the best ever for a rookie signal caller at Arizona and, from a statistical standpoint, it s worthy of comparison to the best performances in program history. But looking at freshman debuts, Tuitama likely set the standard when he took the reins at Oregon State on Oct. 29, Tuitama led Arizona to a victory with 335 passing yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Other standout debuts included Kris Heavner s 276 yards in an overtime loss to TCU in 2003 and Ortege Jenkins 285-yard, three-touchdown effort in a win against San Diego State in Some eventual career starters struggled (statistically) in their freshman debuts, including Tom Tunnicliffe, who went 15-for-26 for 95 yards with two interceptions in a loss at Notre Dame in 1980 (20-3), and Keith Smith, who was 7-for-14 passing for 31 yards with a touchdown and one interception in a rout of Illinois in 1996 (41-0). Interestingly, a school has accumulated 700 yards in its opener eight times during that time period and four of the occurrences came this weekend led by the Wildcats. Here s a look: Most Total Yards In Season Openers Since 2000 Team Opp. Yds. Date Arizona UNLV 787 8/29/14 Nebraska Florida Atlantic 784 8/30/14 BYU Tulane 734 8/25/01 Oregon New Mexico 720 9/4/10 Texas New Mexico St /31/13 Minnesota Toledo 704 9/4/04 WKU Bowling Green 702 8/29/14 USC Fresno State 701 8/30/14 Where it Ranks: Arizona s 787 yards of total offense shattered the old school record of6 691 yards set against New Mexico State set back in Indeed, the Wildcats had never eclipsed the 700-yard mark, but now have one of the highest single-game outputs of any Pac-12 school. In fact, the only program with more than 787 yards in a game is USC, which set its school record of 978 yards against Pamona in Air-zona: Last week s win over UNLV saw Arizona pass for 434 yards, which is the eighthmost in school single-game history. Anu Solomon did much of the work, but backup Jesse Scroggins got in on the action with a pass completion for nine yards on his two attempts. Collectively, it was a 26-for-46 effort that produced a 57 percent completion percentage. It all averaged out to a gaudy 16.7 yards per completion, boosted by touchdown passes of 39, 63, 13 and 92 yards. Good to be Back: After missing all of last season recovering from an ACL injury, senior receiver Austin Hill picked up right where he left off back in As a redshirt sophomore that year, Hill was a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist following a sensational campaign that saw him catch 81 passes for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hill dazzled fans in his return game last Friday when he turned in a slant pattern into a 92-yard touchdown. It tied for the third-longest pass play in school history and was the longest since Hill finished the game with three catches for 110 yards, topping the century mark for the seventh time in his career. A Fix For Six (Hundred): The Wildcats have accumulated 600 yards of total offense on only nine occasions in program history, but it s a feat that is becoming more common under Rich Rodriguez. That s because Rodriguez s teams have already done it five times in twoplus seasons, and those five performances are all in the top-six in the single-game record book, paced by last week s remarkable 787-yard effort. Gurrola, D. Pettinato, T. Jones-Grigsby, C. Gorham. at UTSA Nevada California at Oregon USC at Washington State at UCLA Colorado Washington at Utah Arizona State Super Sophs: A year ago, receivers Samajie Grant and Nate Phillips made a name for themselves as a dynamic freshman duo. They combined for 98 recpetions, 1,069 yards and eight touchdowns, with Phillips earning freshman All-American recognition for his contributions. Each picked up where they left off with big plays last week against UNLV. Grant posted his first career 100-yard receiving game on just four receptions, including a 63-yard touchdown. Phillips made the most of his two grabs, tallying 56 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats on the board for the first time this season in the opening quarter. Outta This League: In two-plus seasons at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is a perfect 9-0 against non-conference opponents. That includes victories over each of the three non-conference teams on the slate this season. The Wildcats have defeated UNLV by identical margins in each of the last two years, and now travel to UTSA to see if they can back up a victory from the victory in Tucson last September. The third opponent the Cats face this season will be Nevada, which Arizona rallied to upend, 49-48, at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Sweet 16: Head Coach Rich Rodriguez led Arizona to a record in his first two seasons. The only coach in school history to post a more successful first two-year run is College Football Hall of Fame member Jim Young, whose Wildcat squads went 17-5 in the seasons. Otherwise, Rodriguez has set a new modern day standard and he s the only coach in program history that has led the team to bowl games in each of his first two seasons let alone win both bowls. The back-to-back eight-win seasons are quite notable considering the Wildcats had accomplished such a feat only three previous times since joining the Pac- 10/12 in 1978 ( , and ). Staff Continuity: In Year 3, Rich Rodriguez welcomes back his entire assistant coaching staff from last season. The staff continuity is a tangible sign that Rodriguez is building a solid foundation for the Arizona football program. In fact, Arizona has not had a season of full staff retention since 1999 when Dick Tomey and Co. returned following one of the most successful seasons in school history a 12-1 record capped with a Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska in Since, John Mackovic saw turnover in each of his three seasons at the helm from , and Mike Stoops replaced at least one assistant coach in all eight of his seasons in Tucson. Turnovers Tell the Tale: If any statistic has been indicative of Arizona s success under Rich Rodriguez, it s been turnovers. When the Wildcats win the turnover battle, there are 1--0 over the last two seasons, including spotless 5-0 mark in 2013 and an early 1-0 clip this year. Splitting the turnover battle has been a good omen, too, with a 4-2 mark in those games to give Arizona a steady 14-2 record when winning or tying turnovers. However, committing more turnovers than the foe has been dooming. The Wildcats are just 3-8 when losing the turnover battle, so no doubt ball security will be a premium throughout this season. First Strikes: It seems rather simple, but scoring first goes a long way to determining the outcome of a game at least if Rich Rodriguez s first two seasons are any indication. When Arizona scores first, it has posted a 11-2 record over the last two-plus seasons, including a 6-1 mark last year. On the flip side, if opponents score first, the Wildcats have struggled to a 6-8 record (2-4 in 2013). Scoring 30: Arizona has made scoring 30 points seem quite easy under Rich Rodriguez. The squad has done so 21 times in the 27 games over the last two-plus seasons. For comparison s sake, Arizona needed 42 games to score 30 points on 20 occasions in the four seasons leading into the Rodriguez era. When the Wildcats do score 30 under Rodriguez, they usually win as evidenced by a 17-4 overall record, including an 8-1 mark last season. Getting to 40 points is even more decisive for the Wildcats, who are 10-1 under Rodriguez in such games. In the Trenches: Entering 2014, an overlooked strength of the Arizona football team is the experience along the offensive line. The Wildcats return four full-time starters, including tackles Fabbians Ebbele (38 starts) and Mickey Baucus (39), center Stephen Gurrola (14) and guard Cayman Bundage (15). Guard Jacob Alsadek made his first career start last week. Together, the group has combined for 107 career starts, while versatile Lene Maiava has two starts to push the tally to 109 starts on the roster. Parks Picks: Junior safety Will Parks is emerging as a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Wildcats. Parks mostly played as a backup last season, but saved his best effort for the end. He had a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown against Boston College in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl to garner game MVP honors. His 2014 debut was even better, registering four tackles, a pair of pass breakups and his third career interception. He made his fifth career start at the Spur safety position. The Wright Way to Start: Linebacker Scooby Wright was spectacular as a freshman last season, finishing with 83 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, and an interception. He s among the Pac-12 s top returning tacklers, and his first game in 2014 proved he ll be making a lot of stops again. Wright had a team-high eight tackles against UNLV last week and registered his second career sack. Coaches gave him the team award for Defensive Player of the Week Arizona Football Game 2 at UTSA

7 They Sure Were Picky: Last season, Arizona s defense intercepted 18 passes, which were the most at the school in more than two decades dating the 1990 season (also 18 INTs). Equally as noteworthy, the Wildcats returned five of those interceptions for touchdowns, which was one shy of the school record of six set in the 1996 season. A total of 10 players had an interception, but the leader was Tra Mayne Bondurant with four, including two for touchdowns. Seniors Jake Fischer and Marquis Flowers each had pick-six s, while now junior William Parks had a 69-yard return for a score in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl to help earn defensive MVP honors. Bondurant, Parks, Jared Tevis, Jourdon Grandon, Jonathan McKnight, Scooby Wright and Devin Holiday combined for 13 of the 18 interceptions, and each returns to the defensive unit this season. Parks picked off the first pass of the 2014 season last week against UNLV. Defensive Improvement: Defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel has done a tremendous job improving the Arizona defense in just two short seasons. Prior to his arrival with Rich Rodriguez for the 2012 season, the Wildcats were one of the most porous units in the country, and the cupboard was bare in terms of talent. The result was a difficult 2012 season when as many as six walkons were relied on significantly, yet the defensive numbers improved slightly and the club was able to win eight games, including a New Mexico Bowl comeback against Nevada. Last season, with improved depth and experience, the Wildcat defense made more significant strides and moved to the middle of the Pac-12 in most statistical categories. Some of the numbers below show the improvement over the last two seasons, which include holding opponents to a full yard less per play and nearly two yards per pass attempt less than the 2011 unit before Casteel and Co. arrived. The first game of the 2014 season showed even more improvement in these areas. Year Yards/Play Yards/Pass Yards/Rush year improvement Game Freshman QB Perspective: It was somewhat surprising, but Arizona had never used a freshman quarterback as the Game 1 starter before Anu Solomon last week. Arizona has had a few worthy contenders, including Keith Smith in 1996, who arguably could have been the guy out of camp, but then head coach Dick Tomey opted to start junior Brady Batten for the first two games before handing the reigns over to the more dynamic Smith. A decade earlier, Ronald Veal was passed over by Tomey in favor of the more experienced Bobby Watters, who transferred out of scandal-plagued SMU, to start the first handful of games in Watters had the job for a few games, but a hand injury sustained against a Troy Aikman-led UCLA squad opened the door for Veal thereafter. Going back another decade, College Football Hall of Famer Jim Young s squad in 1976 featured local Tucson native and Amphi High School product Jim Krohn, who was thrust into action as a freshman in the second game of the year after junior Marc Lunsford went down with an injury. It was Lunsford who sat as a backup for two seasons behind Bruce Hill, a highly-talented quarterback who may have been Arizona s most capable freshman to play out of the gate. However, Hill was unable to see action with the varsity during his freshman campaign in 1971 as he missed the NCAA rule change to allow freshmen to play by one season. After a strong year with the freshman team, Hill went on to quarterback some of the best teams in school history under Young, including consecutive nine-win seasons in 1974 and Interestingly, all three aforementioned freshmen candidates Smith, Veal and Hill had a versatile set of skills and athleticism to thrive in the multiple spread offense like the one Rodriguez employs at Arizona these days. Island of the Misfit Transfers: Arizona may not be surrounded by water or ice, but the program has proven to be a perfect destination for transfers to land on their feet. Rich Rodriguez and Co. have welcomed 13 such players with open arms over the last couple seasons, patching holes on the depth at various positions. Among them are two players from LSU, two from Texas, one from Notre Dame and another from USC. Most notable is the added depth at quarterback, where one-time Trojan Jesse Scroggins is in his second yet final year as a Wildcat. He s been in competition with former Tiger Jerrard Randall and ex-longhorn Connor Brewer, along with redshirt freshman Anu Solomon, for the starting quarterback position. The winner(s?) will get the luxury of throwing to Texas transfer Cayleb Jones and former Notre Dame receiver DaVonte Neal, who played in the 2012 BCS national title game. Now, Arizona hopes its collection of misfits can find Rudolph with a rosy-red nose to make it all a happy ending by season s end.. Wildcats with Previous Stops at FBS Schools Jordan Allen (Sr., DL, LSU) Brendan Murphy (Sr., DB, Air Force) Freddie Tagaloa (Jr., OL, California) Connor Brewer (Soph., QB, Texas) DaVonte Neal (Soph., WR, Notre Dame) Blair Tushaus (Sr., TE, BYU) Cayleb Jones (Soph. The Wildcats host Nevada to close out the non-conference slate on Sept. 20 at Arizona Stadium. Kickoff has been set for 8 p.m. (MST) with a live television broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. (AP) B.J. Denker ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, leading Arizona past outmatched UTSA Saturday night. Denker, the senior who won the offseason competition to succeed Matt Scott at quarterback, had TD runs of 35 and 1 yards and threw 13 yards to Samajie Grant for another score. Ka Deem Carey carried 27 times for 128 yards, including touchdown runs of 4 and 7 yards. Denker had 10 rushes for 90 yards and completed 14 of 21 passes for 158 yards with no interceptions. Arizona improved to 3-0 against a soft early schedule, beating Northern Arizona, UNLV and UTSA by a combined Eric Soza completed 30 of 46 passes for 277 yards with one interception for the Roadrunners (1-2). He also fumbled the ball away. UTSA, formerly known best as Texas-San Antonio and in just its third season of college football, took the opening kickoff and drove 58 yards in 11 plays, but the offense stalled and Sean Ianno s 34-yard field goal made it 3-0. The Roadrunners only lead of the night didn t last long. On its first possession, Arizona went 82 yards in 11 plays with Denker throwing 13 yards to Grant for the touchdown. Denker completed 6 of 7 for 82 yards on the drive. Four of them went to Grant for 46 yards. The TD catch was the first of his young collegiate career. After the ensuing kickoff, Soza s pass was intercepted by Jourdan Grandon, who returned it 16 yards to the UTSA 34. Three plays later, Denker ran 35 yards for the score, rolling on top of teammate Garic Wharton for the final yard. Initially, he was ruled down at the 1-yard line but after a review he was given the touchdown to put the Wildcats ahead Leading 17-6, Arizona took advantage of a short UTSA punt and went 53 yards in seven plays for the score. Carey rushed four yards for the touchdown to make it 24-6 with 2:57 to play in the half. The Wildcats scored again on their first possession of the second half, Denker running it in from the 1. He had a 17-yard run in the drive and a 16-yard pass to Wharton to put the ball at the Roadrunners 4. Jake Fisher scooped up Soza s fumble and returned it 13 yards to the Roadrunners 36 to set up Arizona s final touchdown. Carey carried it in from the 7 for the touchdown. Carey, the nation s leading rusher a year ago, has 33 rushing touchdowns in 26 career games. Soza s 35-yard pass to Kenny Bias set up UTSA s lone touchdown on David Glasco s 4-yard run with 9:39 to play. Arizona has a bye week before beginning Pac-12 play Sept. 28 at Washington. 9 Rich Rodriguez enters his third season as head coach of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as Arizona s 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Rodriguez carries a career record of in 21 seasons, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He is the first coach in Arizona history to lead the program to bowl games in his first two seasons at the helm. In Rodriguez s second season, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona also knocked off a top-10 ranked team for the second-straight season with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Senior B.J. Denker threw for 2,516 yards, completing 233 of 381 attempts with just seven interceptions, and connected on 16 scores to eight different receivers. Showing his versatility, Denker also rushed for 949 yards on 181 attempts with 13 scores. The 2012 season proved successful for Arizona in Rodriguez s spread-offense, no-huddle system. The Cats beat No. 10 USC, 39-36, on Oct. 27 en route to an 8-5 season and a win over Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Carey led the nation in total rushing yards (1,929) and yards per game (148.38) while rewriting the Arizona record book. For his efforts, Carey was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a consensus All-American, UA s first on the offensive side of the ball. Rodriguez inherited a fifth-year senior in quarterback Matt Scott who was perfectly suited to run the Wildcat offense. With Scott as signal caller, Arizona was 7-5 as he orchestrated come-frombehind wins against No. 10 USC and Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors, Scott led the conference in yards per game with and ranked No. 2 in the league in total yardage. Austin Hill totaled 81 catches for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the Wildcat receivers in He was named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist, second-team All-Pac-12 and fourth-team All-America by Phil Steele.
