3 Some Game Themes: To Boulder we go for a festive Homecoming Weekend pitting Pac-12 South Division foes, Arizona and Colorado This is a key game for both sides, particularly if you look ahead and consider potential postseason implications While the Cats are coming off their much-needed first conference win, the Buffs are still seeking theirs. That will make the home team especially hungry under the lights at Folsom Field... The payback factor may also be in the works, considering Arizona has won three-straight in this series... But when we look at this year s matchup, attention quickly turns to the two quarterbacks. Arizona s Anu Solomon was steady in his return to action against Oregon State, bringing a passing threat that balances the Wildcat offense with a bevy of skill players. Colorado s Sefo Liufau is a similarly prolific passer that has some key targets, notably Nelson Spruce and Shay Fields However, the Buffaloes have been at their best this season when they have found success on the ground. They had a tough go of things last week in Tempe, but don t think they won t look to establish the run game against the Wildcats Arizona is one the nation s top rushing attacks, one that added a new dimension last week with the coming-out-party for freshman Orlando Bradford, who scored a trio of touchdowns as a complement to Nick Wilson The Buffs have struggled to stop the run in the last three meetings, so expect that to be an emphasis in game-planning this time around The Wildcats combatted an abundance of injuries at linebacker by bumping safety Paul Magloire Jr. into an outside linebacker position last week. The move paid off and will be a tactic to consider going forward as depth remains limited on the injury-riddled unit The Wildcats may try to get creative in dialing up defense pressure again if the CU-ASU game provides any advice. The Buffs were sacked eight times, dropping them near the bottom of the league for sacks allowed A pivotal point this week will surely be in the red zone. Colorado ranks last in the Pac-12 for offensive red zone success, while Arizona is last in red zone defense This is Week No. 7 in the no-rest-for-the-weary slate handed to both teams this season. For Arizona, it enters the second half of its 12- game schedule, while Colorado nears the midpoint of a 13-game grind that included a season-opening trip to Hawaii No need to pack a bathing suit for this one, the feel of fall will be in the air come kickoff Saturday night. Last Week: Arizona snapped a two-game losing streak with a dominant four-quarter effort on Family Weekend at Arizona Stadium, sending Oregon State back to Corvallis with a 44-7 defeat. The return of Anu Solomon and a couple personnel tweaks on either side of the ball provided the necessary spark to get the Wildcats back on track. Solomon passed for 276 in his return, including a 50-yarder on the opening possession of the game to set up the initial score, which was capped with a Nick Wilson 3-yard plunge. The ground game was dominant throughout, rolling up 368 yards and five touchdowns, with Wilson accounting for a pair of touchdowns and freshman Orlando Bradford converting three. Yet the yardage winner was senior Jared Baker, who sprinted his way to a career-best 123 markers. Perhaps the credit goes to the big guys up front, including Freddie Tagaloa who successfully bumped inside to left guard while Layth Friekh assumed the left tackle spot. All told, it was 644 yards of offense and a welcomed feel-good game for the offense, which sputtered in a road loss at Stanford a week earlier. Not to be outdone, Arizona s defense turned in one of its finest performances in some time, limiting the Beavers to 249 yards of offense and only 98 through the air. A notable contribution came from Paul Magloire Jr., a safety dropped down into an outsider linebacker position much of the afternoon. Magloire had a game-high nine tackles, including two for loss. The defense also forced its first turnover in conference action when Anthony Fotu snared a pick from his end position, setting up the offense at the 1-yardline midway through the second quarter. With the ensuing touchdown, Arizona put the game out of reach and cruised to a 34-7 advantage at halftime. Casey Skowron booted his third field goal of the game to open the scoring in the third quarter, while Bradford punched home his third rushing score of the contest setting the score at its final, 44-7, with 4:37 to play in the third. But the damage was done by that point and the defense pitched a second-half shut out to secure Arizona s first win in Tucson over Oregon State since Arizona vs. Colorado: The Wildcats are just 4-13 all-time against Colorado, but things are rarely ever as bad as they look, and Arizona s four wins have all come within the last five meetings. In fact, UA has won three consecutive contests vs. the Buffs with the average margin of victory being 22.3 points in those three games. Two of UA s four all-time wins vs. CU have come up in Boulder, with the average margin of victory being 13.5 points. On the Offensive: After six games, Arizona s offense remains one of the most potent in the nation. Here are some notable ranks among FBS teams and where it ranks in the Pac-12. Solomon found David Richards in the corner of the endzone for a one-yard touchdown pass, giving the home side a edge at the break In the third quarter, Casey Skowron nailed a 37-yard field goal and Oliver answered with 33-yarder to keep it a four-point margin heading the final stanza The fourth quarter was all Arizona. Nick Wilson, who finished with 153 yards on 21 carries, pounded the rock, and Solomon twice completed touchdown passes to Samajie Grant to put away the Buffs Solomon passed for four touchdowns and racked up a career-high 115 rushing yards to pace the offense Scooby Wright collected 10 more tackles, including two for loss and a sack, to continue his stellar season Wright s pals on defense forced a season-high four turnovers, and each led directly to 28 points a clear deciding factor It was the Wildcats third-straight win in the series after winning just one time in the first 14 tries against Colorado. Here We Go Again: Last year the Wildcats treated their alumni to a treat, earning a convincing over the Buffalos on Homecoming. These two teams will be meeting on Homecoming once again this year, but this time Arizona will do its best to spoil the party and defeat Colorado on its Homecoming weekend. How Long Had It Been? Last Saturday, Arizona s revamped defense held Oregon State to 249 yards of total offense on 66 plays, which averaged out to 3.8 yards per play. The Wildcats stifled the Beavers passing game, yielding only 98 yards on 35 attempts, a paltry 2.8 yards per attempt. It had been quite some time since UA shut down an opponent in such fashion: 65 Number of conference games since UA allowed fewer passing yards (81 yards vs. UCLA on Sept. 20, 2008). 53 Number of conference games since UA held a foe to fewer yards per play (3.6 vs. UCLA on Oct. 24, 2009) 52 Number of conference games since UA held an opponent to fewer total yards (185 yards vs. Washington State on Nov. 7, 2009) 45 Games since the Wildcats held a Pac-12 opponent to single-digit points (Washington State, 7, on Oct. 16, 2010) 43 Number of games since UA allowed any opponent fewer total yards (South Carolina State, 249, on Sept. 15, 2012). Also the last time UA held an opponent to fewer passing yards (89). How Do You Do, 4 & 2: After six games, Arizona owns a 4-2 record with the only two setbacks coming against ranked opposition to start conference play. It marks the third consecutive season that the Wildcats have opened a year at 4-2 (or better, such as 5-1 a year ago), something the program also did during the campaigns. If you re one who ponders postseason possibilities at this juncture, the Cats have now started 4-2 or better six times in the last eight seasons, with the previous five earning bowl berths. RR Did it Again: In its entire football history, Arizona has produced 600 or more yards of total offense on 12 occasions. However, it s become a much more frequent occurrence since Rich Rodriguez arrived for the start of the 2012 season. Since then, the Wildcats have topped the 600-yard barrier eight times, including a school-record 792 yards on Sept. 19 against NAU. The effort topped the previous program high (787 yards) which was turned in by Rodriguez s squad in the 2014 season opener against UNLV. The latest display of offensive fireworks came last week with 644 yards against Oregon State. Quick Strikes: Arizona s up-tempo offense has churned out some explosive touchdown drives that you might have missed if you took a restroom break. Of the 32 touchdown drives for the UA offense, 17 have lasted two minutes or less. Included were three such scoring drives last week against Oregon State, which included oneplay and two-play drives taking 35 seconds or less. It s not always big plays that set up the quick strikes, though. Earlier this year against NAU, the Wildcats efficiently moved the ball 61 yards in 11 plays for a two-minute drill touchdown that consumed only 1:39 on the clock Arizona Football Game 7 at Colorado

5 Explosive Cats: Arizona s offense has a knack for making big plays. In only six games games, the Wildcats have produced 109 offensive plays (run and pass) that have gone for 10 or more yards, a total that ranks tied for eighth-most among all FBS teams. Arizona is the only FBS team that has four 70-plus yard plays this season, with those coming from Jerrard Randall (runs of 72 and 73 yards), Jared Baker (73-yard rush) and Johnny Jackson (70-yard reception from Anu Solomon). The Wildcats have eighth offensive touchdowns scored from at least 20 yards out and four from 50 or more yards. Feel the Rush: The first half of the season has seen the Wildcats lean quite heavily on an explosive rushing attack that is third in the nation with 1,791 yards. They have netted over 100 yards in each game, which has extended the program s streak to 12-straight games rushing for 100 yards. More impressive, Arizona has run for at least 100 yards in 43 of 46 games under Rich Rodriguez. Here are some of the notable rushing notes for this year s rushing attack: UA ranks No. 4 in FBS with 6.54 yards per carry UA ranks tied for No. 7 in FBS with 19 rushing TD UA ranks tied for No. 7 in FBS with rushing yards per game UA ranks No. 5 in FBS with 83 first downs by rushing UA ranks tied for No. 3 in FBS with 54 rush plays of 10+ yards UA ranks tied for No. 1 in FBS (Ga. Southern) with 12 rushing plays of 30+ yards Make Them Uncomfortable: One of the mantras of Rich Rodriguez s program is have his team feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations. At the same time, making an opponent feel uncomfortable is a motive for both UA s offense and defense. Perhaps that s why the Wildcats lead the Pac-12 in a somewhat obscure category: opponent penalty yards. In six games, opponents have peen flagged for 429 penalty yards, tops in the league and 11th-most nationally. The 71.5 penalty yards per game rank No. 19 nationally, but more advantageous has been the fact the Wildcats have picked up 17 first downs by penalty, the No. 4 total among FBS teams. Secondary Shuffle: The fact that Arizona turned in one of its best pass defense performances in some time should not be lost on the fact the Wildcats were without some of their top contributors much of the game. Starting cornerback DaVonte Neal missed the game due to a hamstring injury suffered last week in practice, then starting free safety Jamar Allah missed much of the game after getting banged up early in the contest. The guys who stepped up were CB Jarvis McCall Jr., who made his first start of the season and came through with five tackles plus two pass breakups. Also shuffling at the corner positions was freshman Jace Whittaker, mostly used on special teams earlier this year. At free safety, freshman Demtrius Flannigan-Fowles filled in for Allah for his first significant action as an every down player the last three quarters. They All Count the Same: Under head coach Rich Rodriguez, the Wildcats have compiled a 21-5 record against unranked opponents for a winning percentage of.808. Arizona has won seven consecutive games against unranked foes going back to last season with the lone loss coming to USC (28-26) on Oct. 11, Charting the Cats: Nick Wilson s 24 career ground scores are currently good for seventh on UA s all-time career rushing touchdown list. He needs just one rushing touchdown for 25, which would match Trung Canidate ( ) for sixth on the all-time list. Wilson also eclipsed the 2,000-yard career rushing mark last Saturday giving him 2,058 rushing yards for his career. He s now ranked No. 14 on UA s all-time career rushing list and two yards away from moving into a tie with Ken Cardella (2,060) for 13th on the list Quarterback Anu Solomon s 11 touchdown passes this season gives him 39 in his brief two-year career, placing him at No. 8 all-time at Arizona. He s three touchdown tosses away from moving into a tie for sixth on the all-time list (42) Solomon is also closing in on the school s all-time top 10 passing list. The sophomore has thrown for 4,914 yards, while Matt Scott ( ) holds the No. 10 position in program history with 4,921 pass. He s just seven passing yards away from matching Scott s mark. The performance was his first 100-plus yard rushing game of his career, while it represented the 43rd time the Wildcats had boasted a 100-plus yard rusher under Rich Rodriguez. The Wildcats have now recorded six 100-yard rushing games through six overall contests this season, while UA has boasted at least one 100-yard rusher in eight of its last 10 regular season affairs going back to last season. Glass Half Full: In four seasons at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez s teams have been tough to beat when they hold the halftime lead. In fact, the Wildcats are 25-2 in games they lead at the break, while posting a 4-14 mark when they trail. Only one time has the game been tied at half that coming last November as the Wildcats went on to defeat rival Arizona State, 42-35, to capture the Pac-12 South championship. Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon,

With Solomon back at the controls, the offense clicked on all cylinders, churning out 644 yards of offense and 44 points. It improved Solomon s sophomore numbers to 92-for-145 passing (63.4 percent) for 1,121 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. It checks out to a clean pass efficiency rating that is a noticeable jump from the rating he posted in 14 starts as a redshirt freshman. In only 19 games, Solomon is 86 passing yards shy of 5,000 for his career, something only nine others have done in program history. That s More Like It: Arizona looked more like itself on both sides of the ball on Saturday, as the Wildcats 34 first-half points were already more than what it had scored in each of its first two full conference games to begin the year. It also marked the most points Arizona had scored against a Pac-12 opponent in any half since putting up 43 points in the second half vs. California on Sept. 20, 2014, while it was the most first half points vs. a conference opponent since scoring 42 points in the first half vs. UCLA on Oct. 20, On the defensive end, Arizona held the Beavers to just seven points, which was the least amount of points an Arizona defense had surrendered to a conference opponent since giving up seven points at Washington State on Nov. 7, 2010 (W, 48-7). 21 Means 21: In only six games, Arizona has trotted out 21 players that that have started on defense. While the Cats like to keep bodies fresh and use depth as an advantage, the need to use so many in starting roles has been necessitated due to injuries. Luca Bruno has missed one start (concussion) along the defensive line, while linebacker has been a revolving door with Scooby Wright, Derrick Turituri, DeAndre Miller and Haden Gregory all missing multiple starts after being penciled in as starters at various times. In the secondary, DaVonte Neal missed a start at corner last week, while the Cats have shuffled some starters at the other secondary positions at times. Rodriguez Reaches Milestones: Head coach Rich Rodriguez reached a pair of milestones with a 44-7 victory over Oregon State on Oct. 10. The 22-year head coaching veteran picked up victory No. 150, improving his career mark to It was also Rodriguez s 30th win (in 46 games) as the head coach at Arizona, and he became the second-fastest coach to reach that plateau. The fastest coach to reach 30 wins at Arizona was Jim Young, who did so in his 40th game on Oct. 30, 1976 at Utah. Since then, Larry Smith (Game No. 54 on Nov. 10, 1984 vs. Stanford in Tucson), Dick Tomey (Game No. 56 on Nov. 16, 1991 vs. USC in Tucson) and Mike Stoops (Game No. 67 on Oct. 24, 2009 vs. UCLA in Tucson) have gone on to win at least 30 games, but none as quickly as Young. Randall Racing Toward UA Records: In only five games, Jerrard Randall has racked up 453 yards and four touchdowns on only 37 carries. He s the latest quarterback under Rich Rodriguez to pose a threat in the ground game. Two years ago, B.J. Denker established a new school records for rushing yards (949) and rushing touchdowns (13) by a quarterback. The year prior, in 2012, Matt Scott tallied 506 yards and six rushing scores, which was good enough for No. 5 in the modern day era for quarterback rushing. Now Randall is within striking distance of the top-five, which is listed below. Quarterback Year Att-Yards, TD B.J. Denker , 13 TD Ronnie Veal , 9 TD Keith Smith , 8 TD Matt Scott , 6 TD Chuck Levy , 7 TD (RB w/4 QB starts) Current: Jerrard Randall (37-453, 4 TD) Parks Packs a Punch: Safety Will Parks is turning in a strong season for the Wildcats. The senior leads the team with 41 total tackles, 25 of which are solo stops. He s added 2.0 tackles for loss while also leading the team with six pass breakups and two forced fumbles. The Philadelphia, Pa., native has now totaled 162 tackles (15.5 for loss) and defended 23 passes in his career. Defensive Depth: Arizona s defensive depth has certainly been tested in the early going this season due to a rash of injuries that have most significantly impacted the linebacker position The Wildcats have started nine players who had never started a game on defense prior to 2015, including DT Luca Bruno, LB Haden Gregory, DB Tellas Jones, LB DeAndre Miller, LB RJ Morgan, CB Sammy Morrision, CB DaVonte Neal, LB Tre Tyler and DB/LB Paul Magloire Jr. Additionally, seven others entered the season with less than a half-season of starting experience, including DB Jamar Allah (two starts), CB Cam Denson (2), DB Anthony Lopez (1), LB Jake Matthews (6), DT Sani Fuimaono (6), DL Jeff Worthy (3) and DT Parker Zellers (6) Looking at Arizona s 208 combined starts on defense, 44 percent have been made by DE Reggie Gilbert (40), DB Will Parks (24) or LB Scooby Wright (28) Arizona Football Game 7 at Colorado

7 LB Shuffle: It s not a dance the Wildcats want to be doing much longer. Some six games into the season, Arizona has yet to start the same trio of linebackers in multiple games with a safety bumping down into box last week against Oregon State. The initial hit came during training camp when Cody Ippolito, a six-game starter last year, suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Then in the first quarter of the season-opener on Sept. 3, All-American Scooby Wright left the game with a lateral meniscus tear and missed the next two games. Wright s replacement would have been Ippolito, if healthy, but instead former walk-on Haden Gregory made the start at Nevada in Week 2. Gregory went down in the first half with a knee injury of his own, forcing the Wildcats to play redshirt freshman walkon Tre Tyler at the position the next two weeks. The Wildcats were also without Week 1 starter DeAndre Miller for two games with a wrist injury. Meanwhile, Wright returned Sept. 26 vs. UCLA, but sprained a foot and is again out indefinitely. Making matters worse, Derrick Turituri, who battled through a series of injuries the first four games of the year, injured his hip vs. UCLA and did not travel to Stanford and missed the OSU game. Without Turituri and Wright, who have 40 combined starts in their careers, the Wildcats turned to RJ Morgan to make his first career start and Sir Thomas Jackson, who had not started since 2012, at Stanford. Then Magloire was converted from a safety to an outside backer last week for the OSU contest, a move that paid dividends with a game-high nine tackles. Jake Matthews then moved to middle linebacker, joining Wright, Gregory, Jackson and Tyler as the five different players to start at MLB. Action Jackson: Senior Johnny Jackson, who has come full circle from receiver to defensive back and now back to receiver, is making the most of his final season. The San Diego, Calif., product leads the team with 22 receptions for 328 yards, and is also tied for the team-high with four receiving touchdowns. The contributions come after he shifted from defense to offense midway through August camp when the Wildcats needed to fill in for the injured Trey Griffey and TJ Johnson. It was a welcomed opportunity for Jackson, who was buried on the defensive depth chart following a year-anda-half adjustment to that side of the ball. He began his career as a receiver, catching 25 passes as a redshirt freshman in 2012 and starting four games the next season. His switch to defense was triggered by building depth at the receiver positions. The latest efforts upped Jackson s career numbers to 59 receptions for 639 yards and five touchdowns. Not bad for the former walk-on. Not to be Offensive: Now in Rich Rodriguez s fourth season at Arizona, the Wildcats have scored 15 non-offensive touchdowns, including six last season and two so far this year. The defense has accounted for 12 of the touchdowns, including four in the final five regular season contests a year ago. When Arizona s defense scores a touchdown, the Cats are 9-0 under Rodriguez. Adding in two additional games with kick/ punt return touchdowns, and Arizona is 11-0 when scoring a non-offensive touchdown. Strap Up: Arizona will play a 12-game regular season schedule the way its offense likes to operate: up tempo. There is no bye week for the Wildcats this unless you consider the Thanksgiving Weekend at the end of the slate an off week. Few programs in the country will face the constant grind that Arizona will. Here are the five schools playing 12 (or more) consecutive weeks: Consecutive Weeks with a Game: 1. Colorado 13 Hawaii Arizona 12 FIU 12 North Texas 12 Staff Continuity: Arizona is one of four FBS with the same full-time coaching staff (head coach and nine assistants) since The others are: BYU, Kansas State and Northwestern. The staff continuity is a tangible sign that Rich Rodriguez is building a solid foundation for the Arizona football program. In fact, prior to 2014, Arizona had not had a season of full staff retention since 1999 when Dick Tomey and Co. returned following one of the most successful seasons in school history a 12-1 record capped with a Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska in Since, John Mackovic saw turnover in each of his three seasons at the helm from , and Mike Stoops replaced at least one assistant coach in all eight of his seasons in Tucson. Up Next: Arizona will return home for its annual Homecoming game when it hosts Washington State on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff has been set for 1 p.m. (MST) with a live television broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. UA has now won three straight Score by Quarters F Colorado ) Arizona TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A victory over Colorado is nothing unusual for any Pac-12 team. It was still an important win for No. 21 Arizona. Anu Solomon threw for four touchdowns and ran for a career-best 105 yards, and the Wildcats kept Colorado winless in the Pac-12 by beating the Buffaloes on Saturday night. Coming off a 17-7 loss at UCLA and playing at home for the first time in nearly a month, the Wildcats stayed in the mix in the South Division. Their remaining games are at home against Washington, at Utah and home against Arizona State. Colorado s Sefo Liufau threw for 252 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice and lost two fumbles. The sophomore left after a vicious hit while throwing his second interception with 11:16 to play. Arizona (7-2, 4-2, No. 21 AP) scored a touchdown after each of the four turnovers by the Buffaloes (2-8, 0-7). Tra Mayne Bondurant returned Liufau s fumble 22 yards for the Wildcats first TD. Arizona s Nick Wilson, who has been slowed by an ankle injury, rushed for 86 of his 153 yards in the fourth quarter. He had 18 yards in each of the two previous games. The Wildcats grabbed the lead for good when Solomon threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to David Richards that made it with 11 seconds left in the first half. But it was a tight game until Solomon connected with Samajie Grant for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Grant s first TD made it with 9:50 to play. The 27-yard reception came after Devin Holiday intercepted Liufau, who was hit hard by Sani Fuimaono just as he let go of the ball. Liufau stayed on the ground for several minutes before getting to his feet and walking off. Sophomore Jordan Gehrke finished the game at quarterback for the Buffaloes. Colorado struck on the first play from scrimmage. Shay Fields got behind Arizona cornerback Cam Denson for a 75-yard touchdown reception. Arizona tied it at 7 when a blitzing Anthony Lopez knocked the ball from Liufau as he attempted to pass. Bondurant grabbed the fumble on one bounce and returned it for the score. Moments later, Liufau fumbled again. Jared Tevis knocked the ball loose and recovered at the Buffalo 31. Five plays later, Solomon s 8-yard touchdown pass to Tyrell Johnson put Arizona up Colorado used a trick play to tie it again. 9 The 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Rich Rodriguez returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as the Wildcats 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Rodriguez currently carries a career record of in his 22nd season, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He began his head coaching career at Salem (W.Va.) University in 1988 and then coached at Glenville State (W.Va.) from Rodriguez s third season with the Wildcats was highlighted by a 10-4 record, a Pac-12 South Championship, a Fiesta Bowl berth and winning the Territorial Cup game against ASU. Arizona finished the regular season with 10 wins for only the third time in program history as Rodriguez was named the 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. The streak continued as Rodriguez and the squad defeated a top-10 ranked program for the third-straight campaign with a road victory over No. 2 Oregon on Oct. 2. Offensively, quarterback Anu Solomon became the first freshman ever to start a season opener for the school and went on to throw for 3,793 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and only nine interceptions. He owns the UA freshman records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, pass attempts (540) and pass completions (313). Freshman Nick Wilson collected seven games with 100+ yards and with his 1,375 markers on the season, he set the school freshman rushing record. Linebacker Scooby Wright III was easily the nation s most prolific defender. Based on a vote of head coaches, media and college athletics personnel, he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award, all given annually to the nation s top defender. Also the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, he ranked in the top five among FBS players for total tackles (163), tackles for loss (29.0), sacks (14.0) and forced fumbles (6). Wright is UA s sixth all-time unanimous All-American. In 2013, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona knocked off a top-10 ranked team with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Carey recorded 16-straight games in which he eclipsed the century mark rushing, the longest streak in Pac-12 history and the longest for any FBS player in the last 10 seasons. (AP) -- Anu Solomon threw four touchdown passes to help No. 22 Arizona beat UTSA Thursday night. Arizona sputtered on offense most of the night and allowed UTSA, a team returning two offensive starters, to rack up 525 total yards. Those areas can be fixed. Losing Wright could hurt a lot worse. The junior, who swept the major defensive player of the year awards last season, went down in the first quarter and spent the second half in street clothes, walking with a cane. Arizona scored two defensive touchdowns, but had numerous breakdowns, even before Wright went down. UTSA s Blake Bogenschutz had 332 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-43 passing after throwing an interception for a touchdown on the game s first pass. Solomon threw for 229 yards on 22-of-26 passing, and Nick Wilson ran for 97 yards. The Roadrunners have given Arizona a bit of trouble over the past couple of seasons, playing two close games. This year, the Wildcats have most of their skill players back on offense and UTSA returned six starters overall, fewest in the FBS. No surprise then that the Roadrunners got off to a shaky start. Bogenschutz had his first pass intercepted by Anthony Lopez and returned for 23 yards for a touchdown. UTSA s Brett Winnegan took the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, but that was called back for a block in the back. The Roadrunners also had a 17-play drive lead to no points when Danny Portillo missed a 33-yard field goal and were behind 14-0 after Solomon hit David Richards on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Yet they kept churning out yards, particularly after Wright went out. He went down in the first quarter, tried to return the next series, but lasted one play before heading to the bench to wrap ice around his knee. Bogenschutz set up Portillo for a 19-yard field goal, then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to David Morgan II. Even after Solomon ducked and dodged his way through UTSA s defense to set up a 21-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Jackson, the Roadrunners still fought back. Portillo hit a 33-yard field goal and Bogenschutz followed with a 2-yard touchdown run just before halftime, pulling UTSA to UTSA had a advantage in total yards in the first half. The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the second half, going up after Solomon hit Nate Phillips on a 4-yard touchdown pass and Jamar Allah scooped up Aaron Grubb s fumble for a 22-yard touchdown return. Wilson surpassed the 100-yard mark when he scored his second touchdown to make it with 3:56 to go in the half. Solomon, who played at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High, completed 24 of 33 attempts with no interceptions. He was replaced early in the fourth quarter by backup Jerrad Randall, who ran 57 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach, Don Jackson rushed for 91 yards for Nevada (1-1). Wolf Pack quarterback Tyler Stewart completed 18-of-32 pass attempts for 159 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Nevada was whistled for nine penalties for 105 yards, including two unsportsmanlike calls against thirdyear coach Brian Polian. Arizona, which had 570 yards total offense, had three penalties for 30 yards The closest Nevada got was when Stewart capped an 80-yard drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Jerico Richardson 9:14 before the half. He threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Hasaan Henderson with 10:08 remaining when the game already had been decided. Arizona jumped to a 7-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game on Solomon s 9-yard TD pass to Johnny Jackson two plays after Nevada punter Alex Boy had to chase down a high snap inside his own 10 and kicked it out of bounds at the 16 for a loss of 13. Solomon completed six consecutive passes to lead Arizona on a 77-yard scoring drive capped by Wilson s 3-yard TD run to make it 14-0 at 9:33 in the first quarter. Brent Zuzo s 28-yard field goal pulled Nevada to within 14-3 by the end of a quarter when the Wolf Pack already had been called for five penalties for 56 yards. The Wildcats were driving again late in the second quarter before Wilson fumbled at midfield and linebacker Bryan Lane Jr. recovered, allowing Zuzo to kick a 41-yard field goal as time ran out to make it at the half. On the opening drive of the second half, Solomon s apparent score on a quarterback sneak was overturned on review, but he lobbed a 1-yard TD to Jamarde Cobb on the next play to make it 27-13, and Casey Skowron missed the extra point. Arizona s Cayleb Jones caught six passes for 103 yards. Wilson averaged 9.2 yards per carry in 21 attempts and had two catches for 30 yards. Streak...UCLA has now won four straight Score by Quarters F UCLA Arizona TUCSON, Ariz--- Despite pounding out 350 rushing yards and 456 total yards of offense, the Arizona Wildcats dropped their Pac-12 opener Saturday night to UCLA. Sophomore Nick Wilson churned out 136 yards on 24 carries and quarterback Jerrard Randall added 128 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, but it wasn t enough to overcome a strong offensive performance by the Bruins. Led by freshman quarterback Josh Rosen, UCLA posted 497 yards of total offense and built a lead by halftime. The Wildcats (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) committed three first-half turnovers and the Bruins scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive each time. There were some unforced errors, certainly, Coach Rich Rodriguez said after the game. You have to give them credit for the way they played. But you could see at times we were pressing a little too much, instead of just playing and not worrying about scenarios. On Arizona s first drive of the game, that didn t seem like an issue. Anu Solomon orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Solomon to junior Nate Phillips to give Arizona an early 7-0 lead. But Rosen and the Bruins responded right away. The freshman quarterback found Thomas Duarte for a 35-yard touchdown to tie the game up. On Arizona s next drive, Solomon couldn t corral a snap that sailed over his head and UCLA recovered at the Wildcats 16-yard line. One play later, Bruins running back Paul Perkins scored on a 16-yard touchdown to give UCLA (4-0, 1-0) its first lead of the game. The Bruins never gave it back. The Wildcats again ran into turnover trouble on their next drive and fumbled on their third play. UCLA s Deon Hollins pounced on the ball, setting the Bruins up at Arizona s 30-yard line. Rosen and the Bruins worked it down to the 5-yard line before the quarterback hit Jordan Payton for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead. Following the Rosen to Payton touchdown, Arizona worked the ball into UCLA territory on a 12-yard run by Solomon. But on the play, the quarterback took a hit above the shoulders and exited. At halftime, Rodriguez told ABC Sports that Solomon likely wouldn t return. Randall entered for Solomon and scored on a 39-yard rush on his first play from scrimmage. He showed off his speed that helped him gain 149 yards on just three carries last week against Northern Arizona. Randall s touchdown dash infused some energy into the 56,004 fans at Arizona Stadium, but it didn t seemto bother Rosen. He led the Bruins on a 75-yard drive midway through the second to answer Randall s touchdown and make the score One drive later, Perkins scored his third touchdown of the half when he plunged in from a yard out to make it Arizona had a chance to cut into the lead one last time before half, but missed a field goal as time expired. The Wildcats scored the first nine points of the second half to put a scare into the Bruins. Randall found David Richards for a 16-yard touchdown on Arizona s first drive. Casey Skowron then hit a 44-yard field goal to make it But again Rosen responded with a 75-yard drive, this time needing eight plays and scored on an 8-yard rush. The two teams then traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the final result. Randall, a senior from Hollywood, Florida, was 15 for 28 for 178 yards and one touchdown to senior Johnny Jackson. He added 67 rushing yards on nine carries. The quarterback started in place of sophomore Anu Solomon, who missed the game with a concussion. We have to evaulate everything, Coach Rich Rodriguez said. We have to be better. We have to control what we can control and that s playing better football. Nick Wilson added his sixth rushing touchdown of the season and 22nd of his career, which is the seventh-most in Arizona history. Senior free safety Jamar Allah led the team with 11 tackles. Stanford (4-1, 3-0 Pac-12) won its fourth straight game, using a strong effort from senior quarterback Kevin Hogan. Hogan completed 17 of 19 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He was aided in the backfield by running back Christian McCaffrey, who had 156 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Arizona, playing without several key defensive players, including All-American linebacker Scooby Wright and starter Derrick Turituri, had trouble stopping Hogan and the Cardinal early in the game. Stanford went 43 yards on nine plays on the opening drive of the game and got a 38-yard field goal from Conrad Ukropina to open the scoring. After an Arizona punt, Stanford went right back to work, driving 65 yards on seven plays. Again, the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2) were able to hold the Cardinal to a field goal, and Ukropina knocked in one from 41 yards out. The Wildcats went three-and-out on their second offensive series, giving the ball back to Hogan and Stanford. This time, the Cardinal didn t settle for a field goal. Hogan drove the team 63 yards on seven plays and McCaffrey finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown to make it The drive seemed to wake up Arizona s offense and Randall started to get comfortable in his first start. He directed a 20-play drive that went 73 yards and spanned 7 minutes and 34 seconds. But the Wildcats had to settle for a 26-yard field goal after not being able to convert a third down. Stanford kept rolling offensively and added two more touchdowns before halftime. Senior Remound Wright scored on a 1-yard run with 3:45 left in the half and then caught a 16-yard pass from Hogan with 1:19 left to make it 27-3 at halftime. Randall hooked up with Jackson on a 15-yard score early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 17, but the Wildcats never got any closer. Wright again scored from one yard out and Hogan threw his second touchdown pass to senior Michael Rector to make the score All total, Stanford scored points on eight straight possessions, including six straight touchdowns after the two early field goals. The Cardinal s first punt didn t come until the 11:44 mark of the fourth quarter. The Wildcats also gave freshman quarterback Brandon Dawkins a look in the loss with Solomon sidelined. Dawkins was 2 for 5 for 17 yards. Jackson led the Wildcats with five catches for 84 yards and the touchdown. Samajie Grant had three grabs for 35 yards.
