3 Some Game Themes: Typically season-opening wins answer questions and optimistically propel teams into Week 2. That will be the case for Nevada, which remains at home for the second week in a row after cruising to a victory over UC Davis last Thursday. However, it ll be a much different feeling for Arizona, which dispatched UTSA, 42-32, last week in Tucson, but suffered some bumps and bruises along the way. Included was a knee injury sustained by preseason All-American Scooby Wright, whose status moving forward remains uncertain. The Wildcats lost several potential starters in training camp due to season-ending injuries, then had several others sidelined in the opener, including scratching projected left tackle Freddie Tagaloa. Not included in the MASH unit were a trio of contributors that served unspecified suspensions. What it all meant was the Wildcats played flock of fresh faces and will need to do so again in Reno before the identity of this squad takes shape. The task won t be easy at Mackay Stadium, where the Wolf Pack have ambitions of upending a Pac-12 foe for the second straight year in the program s annual White Out game. Adding fuel to the fire, the Wildcats have won two recent meetings: a stunning comeback in the 2012 New Mexico Bowl and a decision a year ago in Tucson. It is clear Nevada will be hungry for the opportunity to make the third time a charm this go-round. Arizona will need its offensive line to strengthen and create more running room for Nick Wilson and Jared Baker, as well as give Anu Solomon time to survey his receivers. On the flip side, the Wildcats defensive front struggled to create push against UTSA, and disrupting first-year starter Tyler Stewart will be necessary. The Wolf Pack did not turn the football over last week against UC Davis, while Arizona cashed in a pair of defensive touchdowns. Last Week: It wasn t pretty and it certainly wasn t easy, but it was a win on an unseasonably cool and damp Thursday evening at Arizona Stadium. The 22nd-ranked Wildcats held off a pesky UTSA squad for a season-opening victory in the highly physical affair that wrapped up a three-year series between the programs. What Arizona won on the scoreboard, it lost in some other areas. The Roadrunners held the edge in numerous categories, including first downs (29-25), rushing yards ( ), passing yards ( ) and total yardage ( ), while gaining 5.5 yards per play to Arizona s 5.3. Yet the stat that mattered was turnovers: The Wildcats cashed in a pair of turnovers for defensive touchdowns, including Anthony Lopez s pick-six on only the game s second play. Later, Will Parks forced a fumble that Jamar Allah scooped and scored in the third period, which finally afforded the home side some breathing room. The opportunistic Cats found a big play in special teams, too, when DaVonte Neal blocked a fourth quarter field goal try that led to another touchdown on the ensuing drive. At the same time, Arizona s unsteady offense found enough chances with second-year starter Anu Solomon throwing touchdown passes to a quartet of targets. Beyond the stat sheet, the other notable was the departure of All-American linebacker Scooby Wright, who left the game with a knee injury late in the first quarter and did not return. His loss along with some nicks and dings elsewhere led to UA s defensive unit rotating bodies throughout the night. While facing 95 total plays, 16 players came up with two or more tackles, led 11 apiece from Will Parks and Neal, who started at corner for the first time in his career. All-in-all, Arizona won its season opener for the eighth year in a row and prevailed in its home opener for the 15th-straight season. The Last Meeting: Arizona moved to 3-0 as it held off Nevada, 35-28, last Sept. 13 at Arizona Stadium Freshman running back Nick Wilson continued his emergence, rushing for a game-high 171 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns Rookie quarterback Anu Solomon continued to progress, completing a career-best 85 percent of his passes (22-for-26) with 278 yards and three touchdowns through the air Nevada methodically marched 19 plays on the opening drive of the night, but UA s defense held up and yielded only a field goal On its only possession of the first quarter, the Wildcat offense surged on a 12-play drive of its own capped by Wilson s two-yard run for a 7-3 lead Another lengthy drive (13 plays) and another Brent Zuzo field goal brought the Wolf Pack within a point in the second quarter, but Wilson changed that with a 28-yard burst to extend the lead to 14-6 Freshman receiver Tyrell Johnson later hauled in a 35-yard pass from Solomon for a 21-6 lead, but Cody Fajardo rallied Nevada with a 75-yard drive and a touchdown pass to Jarred Gipson and it was a game at halftime The Wolf Pack stopped the Wildcats on the opening drive of the second half, which allowed Fajardo & Co. to tie the game with another touchdown pass and a two-point conversion midway through the third quarter The Wildcats showed poise and some play-making ability, with Solomon finding Cayleb Jones for touchdown strikes of 22 yards and 24 yards to open up a lead by the early stages of the fourth quarter Yet the game was still in doubt after Fajardo again found Gipson for a 6-yard score, bringing the Wolf Pack back to within a touchdown and some six minutes to play However, Arizona s defense held strong when Nevada had the ball and a chance to tie, and Wilson and the Wildcats ran the clock out on the final possession to preserve a seven-point win It marked the 12th consecutive non-conference win for Arizona The Wildcats produced a 100-yard rusher for the 20th-straight game and added a 100-yard receiver for the fourth straight game. He underwent an arthroscopic procedure Saturday, and on Monday head coach Rich Rodriguez said Wright would be out three to four weeks. As a sophomore, Wright won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award, all given annually to the nation s top defender. Additionally, he was named the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year while he ranked in the top five among FBS players for total tackles (163), tackles for loss (29.0), sacks (14.0) and forced fumbles (6). In the process, he became UA s sixth unanimous All-American and was a Walter Camp Player of the Year Finalist. Still Streaking: Thursday s victory over UTSA extended a couple notable streaks. The Wildcats have now won each of their last eight season openers dating to 2008 (last loss was in 2007 at BYU). Additionally, Arizona has won 15-straight home openers since a loss to Ohio State in the second game of the 2000 campaign. The Wildcats also own a string of 17-consectuive victories in season openers that happen to be played at Arizona Stadium (last home loss to begin a season was to Iowa in 1987). Déjà Vu? The last time the Wildcats played at Arizona Stadium, Anthony Lopez scooped up a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown just 44 seconds into the game in last November s Territorial Cup. Fast-forward to the new season and the senior safety found himself running in a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown only 35 seconds into an eventual victory over UTSA last Thursday. If that s not coincidental enough, consider how the Roadrunners must have felt about the quick strike. A year ago in San Antonio, the first play from scrimmage saw Cayleb Jones finish off an 85- yard touchdown reception some 18 seconds into the contest. Four Score: For the fifth time in his career, sophomore quarterback Anu Solomon completed four touchdown passes in a contest. In last Thursday s win, Solomon hit David Richards (6 yards), Johnny Jackson (23 yards), Nate Phillips (4 yards) and Cayleb Jones (4 yards) for touchdowns. The tally kept him shy of matching his career high of five touchdowns, established twice a year ago (home vs. California and at Washington State). Interestingly, Solomon has now thrown touchdown passes to four receivers in each of his two season-openers as the starter (also last year vs. UNLV). Go, Johnny Go! A month ago, senior Johnny Jackson found himself buried on the depth chart in the secondary. With the Wildcats missing a few receivers due to injury, coaches asked Jackson a receiver in his first two seasons if he would make the switch back to offense. Jackson eagerly obliged and immediately found himself in the rotation at the slot positions. He impressed coaches enough to earn a start last Thursday against UTSA, and he delivered a career-high 101 yards on eight receptions, plus added a 23-yard touchdown on a highlight-reel play from Anu Solomon. It was the first 100-yard receiving game of Jackson s career. Not too shabby for a player without a pass reception since the 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, which was his last game as a receiver before he switched to defense in the spring of Neal Deals the Hits: Junior DaVonte Neal, who switched to cornerback during spring practices, saw his transition pay off in his debut at the new position last Thursday. The first-time defensive starter matched teammate Will Parks with a game high 11 tackles and added a pass break up. But his biggest biggest contribution came when he blocked a fourth quarter field goal try as the Roadrunners threatened to cut the Wildcats lead to one possession. Jamar Allah recovered the block and Arizona s offense soon punched in a touchdown for welcomed breathing room early in the fourth quarter. It was the first blocked field goal for the Wildcats since Creating Turnovers: Arizona s defense has developed a penchant for creating turnovers under fourth-year coordinator Jeff Casteel. Since the start of 2012, the Wildcats have created a turnover in 37 of 41 games, including two in the opener last Thursday against UTSA. It was the 23rd time Casteel s unit has forced multiple turnovers, and Arizona s record in those games is Fresh Faces: In last week s opener, the Wildcats played six true freshmen, including Sammy Morrrison, who started at cornerback. Others: safety Demetrius Flanningan-Fowles, receiver Shun Brown, corner Jace Whittaker, running back Orlando Bradford and tight end Darrell Cloy Jr. Arizona also debuted five redshirt freshmen, among them Layth Friekh, who started at left tackle. Others included Jamardre Cobb, Tony Ellison, Brandon Rutt and Nick Reinhardt Joining Friekh on the offensive line was left guard Zach Hemmila another first-time starter as a redshirt junior. Plenty of PBUs: Arizona s defense combined for eight pass breakups last Thursday, led by Will Parks s three and Haden Gregory s two. Along with Anthony Lopez s early interception, the Wildcat defense put its paws on nine of UTSA s 45 team pass attempt (20 percent). In terms of PBUs, the eight knockdowns would have tied last year s season high, which was set at Utah in a victory last Nov Arizona Football Game 2 vs. Nevada

5 Will Fills the Stat Sheet: Senior spur safety Will Parks made his presence known in the opener. The Philadelphia native registered a game-high 11 tackles, including eight solo stops, along with three pass break ups. He also forced a fumble, which was scooped up by Jamar Allah and returned 22 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Parks debut backed up an impressive junior campaign that saw him rack up 81 tackles, 13 for loss, two picks and eight pass breakups. Solomon s Steady Start: Because Arizona s offense didn t put up staggering numbers, it s easy to overlook the effort quarterback Anu Solomon put forth in his 15th career start. The sophomore completed 22-of-36 passes for 229 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. The performance checked out to a pass efficiency rating, which is the fifth-highest total of his career. Sure he missed a few deep passes, but he spread the ball around to seven different receivers despite missing two of his primary weapons. His four-touchdown game was the fifth of his career. Second Half Surge: Arizona struggled to run the ball in the first half against UTSA, but settled in and found some success in the second half. The first half saw the Wildcats muster only 32 yards on 12 rushes a disappointing 2.7 yards per carry. However, things turned around in the second half with UA rolling up 131 yards on 26 totes a 5.0 yard per attempt clip that is more in line with the Wildcats will need to win games. Perhaps first-time starters Layth Friekh and Zach Hemmila, along with new center Cayman Bundage, just needed some time to acclimate to game speed. Lack of Sacks: One thing Arizona coaches will want to drum up: more pass pressure. Going back to last year s Pac-12 Championship game against Oregon, the Wildcats have recorded only one sack in their last three outings. The current drought is on the heels of a pressure surge much of last season when the squad registered 37 sacks over the 12-game regular season (3.1 per game). Playing For Andrew Valdez: The Wildcats will continue to wear the initials AV on the back of their helmets for the remainder of the season in honor of Andrew Valdez, who passed away on June 20 after suffering from cystic fibrosis. Valdez was an honorary member of the Arizona football family for the past 16 months, as the Wildcats made frequent trips to visit him at the Diamond Children s Medical Center. Andrew also came to numerous Arizona football games and practices over the past season. Outta This League: Now in his fourth season at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is a perfect 10-0 in the regular season against non-conference opponents. Each of this year s non-conference opponents (UTSA, Nevada and NAU) have been victims in recent years, including UTSA now in three straight seasons ( ). Nevada dropped a close contest in Tucson last year, while the Wildcats defeated NAU in 2013 as well. Collectively, Rodriguez is 5-0 in the regular season against this year s slate, and that does not include a 2012 bowl victory over Nevada. Turning Points: While not dominant in 2014, Arizona s defense was certainly opportunistic. The Wildcats turned in their best season in over a decade for cashing in points off turnovers. The unit picked up right where it left off last year, as it recorded 14 points off of turnovers last week against UTSA, including two defensive touchdowns (23-yard TD return by Anthony Lopez in first quarter and a 22-yard fumble recovery by Jamar Allah in third quarter). Together, the duo has combined for 5,820 yards of total offense and 49 touchdowns just one game into their sophomore campaigns. Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon,

It was the most true road wins in a season for Arizona since it was 6-0 away from home during the 12-1 campaign of 1998, which also featured a neutral site victory Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. Looking through the record books, the Cats have won at least four road games in just four other seasons: 1975 (5-1), 1974 (4-1), 1973 (5-1) and 1968 (4-1). The Wildcats have won their first road contest of the season in each of the last two campaigns, while Arizona is 4-1 against non-conference opponents away from Arizona Stadium in the Rich Rodriguez era. Not to be Offensive: Now in Rich Rodriguez s fourth season at Arizona, the Wildcats have scored 15 non-offensive touchdowns, including six last season and two so far this year. The defense has accounted for 12 of the touchdowns, including four in the final five regular season contests a year ago. When Arizona s defense scores a touchdown, the Cats are 9-0 under Rodriguez. Adding in two additional games with kick/ punt return touchdowns, and Arizona is 11-0 when scoring a non-offensive touchdown. Also not factored in is a fake field for a touchdown scored by Casey Skowron last season against Washington. Staff Continuity: Arizona is one of four FBS with the same full-time coaching staff (head coach and nine assistants) since The others are: BYU, Kansas State and- Northwestern. The staff continuity is a tangible sign that Rich Rodriguez is building a solid foundation for the Arizona football program. In fact, prior to 2014, Arizona had not had a season of full staff retention since 1999 when Dick Tomey and Co. returned following one of the most successful seasons in school history a 12-1 record capped with a Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska in Since, John Mackovic saw turnover in each of his three seasons at the helm from , and Mike Stoops replaced at least one assistant coach in all eight of his seasons in Tucson. Strap Up: Arizona will play a 12-game regular season schedule the way its offense likes to operate: up tempo. There is no bye week for the Wildcats this unless you consider the Thanksgiving Weekend at the end of the slate an off week. Few programs in the country will face the constant grind that Arizona will. Here are the five schools playing 12 (or more) consecutive weeks: Consecutive Weeks with a Game: 1. Colorado 13 Hawaii Arizona 12 FIU 12 North Texas 12 One Good Thing: While Arizona won t have a bye week during its regular season, its Pac-12 opponents won t find many opportunities to rest up for the Cats either. Of the 12 foes, only Oregon State has a bye week immediately prior to battling Arizona. Otherwise, Washington plays two consecutive games before its meeting with the Wildcats, and all others play at least three straight weeks. Utah, who travels to Tucson on Nov. 14, will have played five straight games in front of the Arizona contest. Guess What Day It Is: Game day has different meaning for the Wildcats lately., but they will finally play on a traditional Saturday this week. Last Thursday s opener against was the fourth-consecutive non-saturday game for Arizona. The Wildcats closed the 2014 campaign by playing the Territorial Cup on a Friday, the Pac-12 Championship Game on a Friday and the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl on a Wednesday. Returning to regular Saturdays will be a welcomed sight for Arizona, which will then play 11-consevutive Saturdays through the end of the regular season. Man in the Middle: Arizona is replacing three full-time starters along the offensive line, and one of the returnees will have himself at a new position. Senior Cayman Bundage a 26-game starter at guard in his career made his first career start at center last week. The change is two-fold: the Wildcats lost two-year senior starter Steven Gurrola, and his back-up Carter Wood was forced to medically retire this August after entering camp as the favorite to win this year s job. Bundage has transitioned well and earned the coaches nod as the team s offensive player of the week against UTSA. Glad to Have Him Back: Arizona s defensive line received a major boost in the offseason when Reggie Gilbert was awarded a fifth year of eligibility after missing a host of games due to injury earlier in his career. Gilbert is now a 35-game starter for the Wildcats who has recorded 100 total tackles, including 18.5 for loss along with 10.5 sacks. His experience and leadership will be valued as much as anything in his final season. Up Next: Arizona returns home to close out non-conference play with a contest against intrastate rival Northern Arizona on Sept. 19 at Arizona Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (MST) with a live television broadcast on Pac-12 Networks Arizona Football Game 2 vs. Nevada

Streak...UA has won last three meetings Score by Quarters F Nevada Arizona TUCSON, Ariz. -- Anu Solomon threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, Nick Wilson ran for 171 yards and Arizona held off Nevada Saturday night. Arizona (3-0) came into the game with the nation s fifth-best offense and had another big night against the Wolfpack, rolling up 507 yards. Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and gave Arizona a 100-yard rusher for the 20th straight game, tied for longest in the FBS since Solomon finished 22-of-26 passing and threw two second-half touchdown passes to Cayleb Jones, who had nine catches for 116 yards. Cody Fajardo kept Nevada (2-1) in it, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wolfpack turned the ball over on downs their last drive. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said after the 2012 New Mexico Bowl that he hoped to never face Fajardo again. The Wolfpack quarterback lit up the Wildcats in that game, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 140 and another score. Fajardo, on the other hand, was looking forward to facing Arizona again. Despite having what may have been the best game of his career in the bowl game, Nevada lost the game after the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final minute. Fajardo had some success against Arizona early as the Wolfpack picked their way down the field. Nevada held the ball for the game s opening 9:33 and had another scoring drive that lasted 6:08. The problem for the Wolfpack was how both ended: in field goals. Thirty-two plays, 141 yards and more than 15 minutes resulting in just six points -- a dangerous game against an explosive offense like Arizona s. The Wildcats needed just 1:50 to score their first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Wilson. The freshman scored the next one, too, bursting off left tackle for a 28-yard score. Solomon, who threw an ill-advised interception early in the second quarter, showed off his athletic ability just before halftime, rolling to the left and throwing off his back foot to hit Tyrell Johnson perfectly in stride for a 35-yard touchdown. Fajardo finally got the Wolfpack into the endzone after that, orchestrating a quick 75-yard drive capped by his 7-yard touchdown pass to Jarred Gipson that cut Arizona s halftime lead to The confidence of seeing six points go up on the board instead of three carried over into the third quarter, when Fajardo opened with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hasaan Henderson. Arizona had an answer. Two, in fact. Solomon threw another touchdown on the run, this one going the other way, this one a 22-yarder to Jones. The Solomon-Jones connection worked again on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 24-yarder that put the Wildcats up Nevada and Fajardo still weren t done. 8 The 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Rich Rodriguez returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as the Wildcats 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Entering the 2015 season, Rodriguez carries a career record of in 21 seasons, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He began his head coaching career at Salem (W.Va.) University in 1988 and then coached at Glenville State (W.Va.) from Rodriguez s third season with the Wildcats was highlighted by a 10-4 record, a Pac-12 South Championship, a Fiesta Bowl berth and winning the Territorial Cup game against ASU. Arizona finished the regular season with 10 wins for only the third time in program history as Rodriguez was named the 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. The streak continued as Rodriguez and the squad defeated a top-10 ranked program for the third-straight campaign with a road victory over No. 2 Oregon on Oct. 2. Offensively, quarterback Anu Solomon became the first freshman ever to start a season opener for the school and went on to throw for 3,793 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and only nine interceptions. He owns the UA freshman records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, pass attempts (540) and pass completions (313). Freshman Nick Wilson collected seven games with 100+ yards and with his 1,375 markers on the season, he set the school freshman rushing record. Linebacker Scooby Wright III was easily the nation s most prolific defender. Based on a vote of head coaches, media and college athletics personnel, he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award, all given annually to the nation s top defender. Also the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, he ranked in the top five among FBS players for total tackles (163), tackles for loss (29.0), sacks (14.0) and forced fumbles (6). Wright is UA s sixth all-time unanimous All-American. In 2013, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona knocked off a top-10 ranked team with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Carey recorded 16-straight games in which he eclipsed the century mark rushing, the longest streak in Pac-12 history and the longest for any FBS player in the last 10 seasons. (AP) -- Anu Solomon threw four touchdown passes to help No. 22 Arizona beat UTSA Thursday night. Arizona sputtered on offense most of the night and allowed UTSA, a team returning two offensive starters, to rack up 525 total yards. Those areas can be fixed. Losing Wright could hurt a lot worse. The junior, who swept the major defensive player of the year awards last season, went down in the first quarter and spent the second half in street clothes, walking with a cane. Arizona scored two defensive touchdowns, but had numerous breakdowns, even before Wright went down. UTSA s Blake Bogenschutz had 332 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-43 passing after throwing an interception for a touchdown on the game s first pass. Solomon threw for 229 yards on 22-of-26 passing, and Nick Wilson ran for 97 yards. The Roadrunners have given Arizona a bit of trouble over the past couple of seasons, playing two close games. This year, the Wildcats have most of their skill players back on offense and UTSA returned six starters overall, fewest in the FBS. No surprise then that the Roadrunners got off to a shaky start. Bogenschutz had his first pass intercepted by Anthony Lopez and returned for 23 yards for a touchdown. UTSA s Brett Winnegan took the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, but that was called back for a block in the back. The Roadrunners also had a 17-play drive lead to no points when Danny Portillo missed a 33-yard field goal and were behind 14-0 after Solomon hit David Richards on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Yet they kept churning out yards, particularly after Wright went out. He went down in the first quarter, tried to return the next series, but lasted one play before heading to the bench to wrap ice around his knee. Bogenschutz set up Portillo for a 19-yard field goal, then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to David Morgan II. Even after Solomon ducked and dodged his way through UTSA s defense to set up a 21-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Jackson, the Roadrunners still fought back. Portillo hit a 33-yard field goal and Bogenschutz followed with a 2-yard touchdown run just before halftime, pulling UTSA to UTSA had a advantage in total yards in the first half. The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the second half, going up after Solomon hit Nate Phillips on a 4-yard touchdown pass and Jamar Allah scooped up Aaron Grubb s fumble for a 22-yard touchdown return.
