3 Some Game Themes: As Halloween nears, a Pac-12 North vs. South matchup ensues on the Palouse It s a key game for both visiting Arizona and host Washington State, two schools that have enjoyed (or suffered) differing results this season Yet the Cats and Cougs are both coming off losses and a long bye week for the frustrations to simmer For Arizona, ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25, the record is a respectable 5-1, one win shy of bowl eligibility. For Washington State, the record is 2-5, with only one loss to spare if it plans to keep bowl aspirations in play Both sides have a penchant for close games, but with contrasting fortunes: UA is 4-1 in games decided by a touchdown or less, while WSU is 1-3 in such games The numbers suggest we ll see a ton of offense in this one, but last season the teams combined for only 41 points when the Cougs clawed away a victory in the desert The quarterback position will draw much attention, notably redshirt senior Connor Halliday s eye-popping 3,344 passing yards already amassed. Arizona counters with a redshirt freshman putting up typically noteworthy numbers through six games While the Cougs are predominantly pass-heavy in their play selection, they stretch the field horizontal with the pass as an extension of the run game. And last year in Tucson, they found some room on the ground to the tune of 101 rushing yards (compared to their net total of 313 through seven games this year). The task for Scooby Wright and the Wildcat defense will be to pressure Halliday, but also make sure short plays are kept to small gains in both the run and pass game The Cats are more balanced, but their two featured backs Nick Wilson and Terris Jones-Grigsby have been banged up. So, too, has veteran guard Cayman Bundage. From that standpoint, the bye week could not have come at a better time. Each is a key cog in Rich Rodriguez s offensive machine clicking on all calendars With an extra week of prep, and the motivation coming off recent losses, expect both sides to throw a few wrinkles into their offensive and defensive game plans It s the first of two-straight road games for the Wildcats Arizona was emerged victorious in each of its last three visits to Pullman (last in 2010), but has not visited since Martin Stadium has been renovated. Last Week: Arizona took its second and final bye week of the season last Saturday. The week prior, the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, 28-26, to visiting USC at Arizona Stadium on Oct. 11 It was mirror image of Arizona s first two Pac-12 wins, except for the result: Arizona was sluggish offensively in the first half, found itself trailing going into the second half only to rally back in the second half. The Wildcats did everything again except finish off a potential game-winning drive against the Trojans when Casey Skowron s 36-yard field goal sailed wide right with 12 seconds left in the game Arizona s troubles began much sooner than that final kick, though Javorious Allen led a dominant USC rushing attack with 205 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. Two of those scores came on 34 and 48-yard plays in the first half to pace USC to a 14-6 lead. That margin could have been narrower, but Skowron earlier missed a 48-yarder before making from 32 and 25 yards in the first half. Then he hit a 34-yarder before halftime, except USC called a timeout immediately before the play. Skowron s second attempt was blocked, and it was the first of two occasions that a USC timeout on a field goal try led to a miss on the second attempt (also on potential game-winning try) The Trojans extended their lead on the first possession of the second half, taking the ball 75 yards on 11 plays before Cody Kessler hit Nelson Agholor on a 21-yard score Arizona s first possession resulted in a punt, and things were gloomy, but Reggie Gilbert forced a fumble at the USC 22-yardline. Arizona quickly cashed it in four plays later capped by Jared Baker, thrust into action with the absence of Nick Wilson and earlier injury to Terris Jones-Grigsby, on a six-yard rushing score The Trojans answered with a methodical 13-play, 75-yard, finished off on Allen s third TD of the night to put the margin back to 15 Two possessions later, Baker reignited the offense with a 41-yard touchdown reception to convert a fourth-and-three. Suddenly it was a game The teams traded punts on the next three possessions, before Arizona had a chance to tie the game on a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Baker s third score of the contest. However, the two-point try failed, and the Cats were still down two Skowron s on-side kick bounced perfectly into the hands of a streaking and leaping Cayleb Jones, and the Cats were in business with one minute remaining They quickly moved to the USC 19-yardline, tossed a couple incomplete passes to the endzone and sent Skowron out for the potential game-winning try, but it wasn t to be It snapped a six-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who were ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25 after being unraked previously. Cats in the Polls: Arizona is ranked No. 15 in this week s Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the third-straight week the Wildcats have been ranked. After upsetting then-no. 2 Oregon in Eugene, Ore., on Oct. 2, Arizona vaulted from unranked to No. 10 the following week, marking the largest jump in the poll s history since it expanded to 25 teams back in The Wildcats then dropped a heartbreaker to USC on Oct. 11 and fell to No. 16 in the AP Poll last week. With some shuffling across the country, Arizona rose one spot this week. Prior to entering the rankings earlier this month, Arizona was last ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first week of the 2012 season. The Wildcats are also No. 15 in this week s Amway USA Today Coaches Poll. Arizona in the NCAA Rankings Category Rk. It was the Cougars who were more confident and made big plays throughout, taking an early 10-0 lead and then rallying in the second half for the victory. Connor Halliday passed for 319 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cougars, who found a bit of a spark in the running game, too. Marcus Mason put the Cougs on the board early with a 15-yard run, and Andrew Furney added a 24-yard field goal to put the visitors up 10 in the first period. Ka Deem Carey did his best to keep the Wildcats in the game, scoring on a 30-yard run near the end of the first quarter and adding a 7-yard touchdown reception to give UA a halftime lead. Washington State asserted itself in the second half, keeping the Wildcats out of the endzone and scoring twice itself. Halliday gave the Cougs a lead with a 23-yard pass to River Craycraft early in the third, before Arizona tied the game on Jake Smith s 25-yard field goal on the ensuing possession. The game remain knotted deep into the fourth quarter when Smith pulled a 34-yard field goal, which could have put UA on top. Instead, Halliday marched the Cougs 80 yards over 4:44 and hit Isiah Myers for a 25-yard touchdown. The Cats comeback bid came up short as B.J. Denker s scrambling pass to Samajie Grant in the endzone was caught out of bounds as time expired, giving WSU its first victory over Arizona since Carey finished the game with 132 rushing yards his 13th-straight 100-yard rushing game at the time. Last Time on the Palouse: Since it s been a while, we should remind you of Arizona s last visit to the Palouse. Arizona proved it could win without some of its principals and turned in a team effort on the road to outpace an improving Washington State, 24-7, in Pullman, on Oct. 16, With junior star Nick Foles sent to the sideline with a knee injury, Matt Scott came on in the second quarter and helped lead the Cats to three scores with modest stewardship built of little previous 2010 playing time. Arizona s defense, though, stepped forward and kept WSU one dimensional enough to limit the Cougs scoring opportunities, helped by four takeaways. The one dimension, WSU quarterback Jeff Tuel, hurt UA some including one big 83-yard toss to the Arizona 12-yard line, but two plays later the man who got beat on the long throw, freshman corner Shaquille Richardson, got his second interception of the game in the end zone to kill the threat. Arizona accumulated a sub-par 352 yards in the game but got some key running from Keola Antolin (92 markers, two touchdowns) and Nic Grigsby (66, one score) to provide some thrust along with Scott s (139) and Foles (71) throwing yardage. It was clear the change in generals affected the passing game, though, with UA held scoreless through the air for the first time in The UA had seven sacks in the game led by Ricky Elmore with 2.5, but suffered six of their own trying to block for the new guy. Arizona scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters to take a 21-0 lead before Tuel hit Marquess Wilson for a 23-yard score at the end of the third stanza. Alex Zendejas kicked a 40-yard field goal four minutes into the fourth period for the final score of the game. True freshman Richardson, who joined UA s team in July after leaving UCLA, started for injured junior Trevin Wade and learned a lot. He finished with a team-high tying seven tackles, the two picks and a game-high three pass break-ups. Arizona totaled 13 tackles for losses to keep WSU off balance and mostly out of the end zone with its 297 yards in total offense. Knocked out of the game along with Foles were freshman defensive tackle Justin Washington (knee) and freshman receiver Richard Morrison (shoulder). But the injuries proved another strength of the UA program -- depth. Backup DTs Sione Tuihalamaka (RS-Fr) and Willie Mobley (soph) filled in with a pair of tackles apiece, for example, and UA simply played 55 guys who found ways to win the game. Scooby Snacks: Sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright picked up a few midseason honors during the bye week, including being added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, an honor given to the top defensive player in the nation each year. Wright was also named a midseason All-American by Sports Illustrated (first team) and Phil Steele (second team). Through six games, Wright leads Arizona in tackles (70), tackles for loss (11.0), sacks (6.0) and forced fumbles (2). Extrapolating those numbers through another six games, he would finish the regular season with 140 tackles, 22.0 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks and four forced fumbles. Currently, his 11.7 tackles per game lead the Pac-12 and rank No. 7 among FBS players. Additionally, Wright s 1.8 tackles for loss per game check in third in the Pac-12 and tied for fifth nationally. First Half in the Books: The first-half of the regular season is complete, and Arizona has a very respectable 5-1 record. That initial mark stands as one of the best opening records since the school joined the Pac-10/12 in 1978, but there s a lot of football to be played. Here s a look at Arizona s best starts to seasons before suffering a second loss since 1978: (final) Arizona Football Game 7 at Washington State

5 Fab Five: Just six game into their careers, freshmen Anu Solomon and Nick Wilson have etched their names into the UA record books for some of best freshman performances in school history. Solomon already set the school single-game passing record (520 vs. California on Sept. 20), while Wilson has two 170-plus yard rushing games to claim two of top-five spots for freshman single-game rushing outputs. Now Solomon can already claim the single-season passing yardage record for any UA freshman, while Wilson is only 130 markers from the season rushing record. Here s a look at the top-five seasons for freshman and passing at Arizona: PASSING (Season) Yards Player Year Comp-Att-INT-TD 1. 1,741 Anu Solomon ,669 Ortege Jenkins ,501 Kris Heavner ,450 Keith Smith ,239 Ronald Veal RUSHING (Season) Yards Player Year Att-Yards-TD Nic Grigsby Clarence Farmer Vance Johnson Nick Wilson Ronald Veal Second Half Surge: The first half of the season saw Arizona dominate second halves, and the scoring margin is indicative of that. But when you look at the offensive numbers, the Wildcats have simply been more efficient in the final two quarters, executing better on third downs and capitalizing on scoring chances with touchdowns in the red zone. In fact, UA has failed to score in the red zone in the second half of a game just once all year the final drive against USC. While Solomon s play has been inconsistent at times, his numbers are impressive considering he has played in just six college games. The poised passer is 174-for-278 passing this season, a steady 62.6 percent completion percentage that has produced 2,136 passing yards (12.3 yards per completion). Equally as impressive, Solomon has thrown for 15 touchdowns against only four interceptions, a healthy ratio nearly four to one. Plenty of football remains, but doubling his numbers over the second half of the season would calculate to 348 completions, 556 attempts, 4,272 yards, eight interceptions and 30 touchdowns. Not factoring in a potential bowl game, those numbers would put Solomon No. 2 in most all UA single-season categories behind Nick Foles marks in 2011 (a non-bowl season). Solomon would have the edge for the single-season touchdown mark, which is held by Foles and Willie Tuitama (28). We ll let the football play itself out, but the mid-season statistical evaluation is pretty good for the first freshman ever to start a season at quarterback for the Wildcats. In fact, Solomon has already set the single-season record for passing by a freshman (previously held by Ortege Jenkins 1,669 yards in 1997). Tell them... tell the team to bear down. Jones-Grigsby, Jared Tevis, Blake Brady Pass-a-Palouse-a Defense: Arizona s pass defense will get its stiffest test yet this season when it faces Mike Leach s Air Raid offense. Washington State passes the ball on 77 percent of its offensive plays (440 of 573), averaging 7.8 yards per pass and 11.7 yards per completion. Quarterback Connor Halliday completes two-third of his throws (292-of-438) and has 3,334 passing yards and 28 touchdowns against eight interceptions. It averages out to passing yards per game for Halliday and 490 yards through the air for the team. To counter, the Wildcats figure they will need to create some pressure on Halliday to quickly force the ball out of his hand and then tackle well in space to prevent big plays. The Wildcats top sack specialists are linebackers Scooby Wright (6.0) and Derrick Turituri (3.0), a pair of linebackers who can play rush-end on UA s SWAT defense on third downs. How they will be utilized remains to be seen, but will be critical. On the back end, Arizona has just four interceptions this season after hauling in 18 picks a year ago. Senior defensive backs Jared Tevis, Tra Mayne Bondurant and Jonathan McKnight each have one, as does junior safety William Parks. Collectively, the four have 21 career interceptions, led by Bondurant (8) and followed by McKnight (6), Tevis (4) and Parks (3). Redshirt freshman corner Jarvis McCall Jr. is seeking his first career pick after getting his hands on a few balls throughout the year. Perhaps Pullman would be a good place for his first: in UA s last visit to Martin Stadium, then-freshman Shaquille Richardson had a pair of interceptions in a win in Baker s Dozen: Junior running back Jared Baker was thrust into action against the Trojans when Nick Wilson was held out due to injury and Terris Jones-Grigbsy went down with injury during the game. The veteran answered the call with a career-best three touchdowns (all in the second half) to help rally the Cats. He matched his career high with a dozen carries in the game for 43 yards, and set career highs in both receptions (4) and receiving yards (50). His 41-yard receiving touchdown was a career-long and helped boost his all-purpose tally to 93 yards for the game. On the season, Baker averages a healthy 4.2 yards per carry with 96 yards on 23 totes. He proved the Rich Rodriguez hard edge mantra when someone goes down, it s time for next man to step up. Not to be Forgotten: Not to be lost in the agony of defeat, here are some other notable contributions from the USC game: Sophomore receiver DaVonte Neal, a transfer from Notre Dame, turned in his best performance as a Wildcat. He had career-highs for receptions (7) and receiving yards (65), and his 27-yard catch was also a top mark. In the return game, Neal broke of a 43-yard punt return his longest as a Cat. Neal finished with 108 all-purpose yards, another career high Receiver David Richards established a career-best with 61 receiving yards against USC while matching his top output with seven receptions Quarterback Anu Solomon was one pass attempt (72) shy of matching his school record. He turned in his third career 300-yard game with 395 yards Defensively, senior defensive back/linebacker Tra Mayne Bondurant set a career-high with 11 tackles Others that set/ matched tackle marks: Cam Denson (2) and Cody Ippolito (5) Lineman Reggie Gilbert forced a fumble for the second time in his career Scooby Wright did not establish any new single-game highs, but led all Cats with 12 tackles, a sack and 3.0 tackles for loss. Negating the Negatives: For all the big plays produced by the Arizona offense, don t overlook some of the smaller plays. Led by an experienced offensive line, which has had to juggle some personnel to combat injuries, the Wildcats have surrendered few negative plays this season. In fact, Arizona has been tackled for a loss only 4.5 times per game this year, which is second-fewest in the Pac-12 and a top-20 figure nationally. Running backs account for only 12 negative rushing yards on some 176 rushing attempts. Otherwise, quarterback Anu Solomon, who has gained 244 rushing yards, has also lost 84 mostly on sacks. Cayleb Cashes In: Receiver Cayleb Jones has emerged as Arizona s big-play threat in the passing game and a comfortable go-to man for quarterback Anu Solomon. Jones has 39 catches for 592 yards and six touchdowns to date, numbers that average out to 15.2 yards per catch and 98.7 yards per game. The transfer from Texas has three 100-yard receiving games thus far, and was added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List in recent weeks. His biggest asset to the offense is his big-play prowess and ability to pick up some tough yards. Of his 39 receptions, 28 have resulted in first downs or touchdowns (72 percent). His receiving yards, yards per game, receptions per game and receiving touchdowns are all top-10 individual marks in the Pac-12 to date. In the Trenches: For all of Arizona s youth on offense, the Wildcats do have some experience along the offense led by fifth-year senior tackles Mickey Baucus and Fabbians Ebbele. The two bookends have combined for 87 starts, led by Baucus 44 which is a team-high at any position. Senior center Steven Gurrola (20 starts) and junior guard Cayman Bundage (18) add 38 more starts to the front-line experience. Lene Maiava (6) and Jacob Alsadek (3) have split time at the other guard spots this season, rounding out the offensive front that, in total, has 134 career starts to its credit. The experience has been necessary as injuries to Alasdek and Bundage have forced the Wildcats to shift personnel at times Arizona Football Game 7 at Washington State

7 Spread the Wealth: Redshirt freshman Anu Solomon has a wealth of receiving options in the spread offense attack. He has completed a pass to 12 players, including once to himself, and eight of those other Wildcats have caught a touchdown pass. From the receiving corps, Cayleb Jones (39 receptions-592 yards), Austin Hill (25-345), Nate Phillips (21-225), Samajie Grant (16-227), David Richards (16-131), Trey Griffey (15-144) and DaVonte Neal (14-135) are all reliable targets with more than 100 receiving yards to their credit this season. Add in speedy Tyrell Johnson (8-88) and there is an eighth option to plan for in the passing game. Then you have to account for the running backs. Terris Jones-Grigsby (8-120) is the eighth Wildcat to top 100 receiving yards this season, while Nick Wilson (8-67) and Jared Baker (4-50) chip in to produce 237 total receiving yards for the three primary backs on 20 combined receptions. Turning up the Heat: The first half of the season saw Arizona s defense create more pressure on quarterbacks than it has in recent seasons. It s been a steady improvement for the unit in three seasons under coordinator Jeff Casteel, who hasn t had the benefit of an elite pass rusher on the defensive front. Instead he s had to be creative and rely on the hard edge mentality of his players. This year the force has come from Scooby Wright (6.0 sacks) and Derrick Turituri (3.0 sacks), who account for more than half of UA s 15 total sacks in six games. It averages out to 2.5 sacks per game, which is in line with the 2.54 clip turned in by the 2010 unit that was led all-conference defensive ends Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore. Here s a look at the trends since: Year Sacks Per Game Return of the Return Game: Arizona s stats in the return game, whether it be kickoffs or punts, won t jump off the stat sheet. However, the Wildcats have shown improvement in both areas in recent games and figures to have two potential play-makers waiting to break a big one. On kickoffs, freshman Tyrell Johnson has emerged as the primary return man and has 10 returns for exactly 200 yards on the year. The 20.0 yards per return figure isn t noteworthy, but his speed surely is, and he had a chunk of yards called back on a couple returns at Oregon earlier this month when he totaled 99 yards on four returns (24.8). On punt returns, DaVonte Neal has become the preferred man, a role he had at Notre Dame two years ago when the Irish played for the national title before he transferred to Arizona. Neal was having a quiet season until he broke off a 43-yard return against USC two weeks ago. It s the type of ability coaches have seen since he arrived. What The Next One Would Mean: Arizona finds itself one win shy of achieving bowl eligibility, something it has done in five of the previous six season. The Wildcats went to three-consecutive bowls under previous head coach Mike Stoops from , before missing out on postseason play in Under Rich Rodriguez, Arizona has won backto-back bowl games (2012 New Mexico Bowl, 2013 AdvoCare V100 Bowl). The school has never appeared in bowl games in a stretch of six times in seven years. Austin Ascending the Charts: Senior wide receiver Austin Hill is moving up the list on several Arizona receiving charts. In his career, Hill has 127 receptions for 2,020 yards and 16 touchdowns. The 127 catches have displaced Richard Dice (119 from ) for the No. 10 spot in the school career record books. Next in line is David Roberts, who hauled in 128 passes most from current Eagles quarterback Nick Foles from From the yardage standpoint, Hill currently sits at No. 7 for Wildcat receivers ahead of Dice (1,957) with a ways to go to catch Jon Horton (2,415 from ) for sixth place. In terms of receiving touchdowns, Hill ranks tied for No. 8 with Horton and Rob Gronkowski ( ) and is one behind Dice s mark of 17 for seventh place. A native of Corona, Calif., Additionally, a reception in 23-consecutive games played, including two or more over the last 21-straight contests. Tevis a Tucson Talent: Another overlooked star of the Arizona defense is senior safety Jared Tevis. A former walk-on from Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Tevis is known as one of the hardest hitters in the country despite his smaller stature (5-foot-11, 202 pounds). In five games this season, Tevis is second on the squad with 51 tackles, a 8.5 stops per game clip that puts him tied for fifth in the Pac-12. In his career, Tevis has started 28 games and racked up 222tackles, along with seven forced fumbles and three interceptions. He s been named a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, College Football s Premiere Scholar-Athlete Award. A former walk-on and Tucson native, Tevis earned his undergraduate degree in finance in May 2014 with a cumulative GPA of He started graduate classes in business at Arizona s esteemed Eller College of Management this fall. He s a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team honoree with the potential to earn a third award during the 2014 season, and is a member of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award Watch Lists this season. A 32-game starter in his career, Bondurant plays the spur safety position in the alignment, but in his two starts this season against California and Oregon two predominantly spread offenses the Wildcats have used him as a hybrid nickel back/weak side linebacker. Added in with significant play off the bench against USC, and Bondurant has tallied a 23 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, to go with an interception and two passes broken up in the last three games. Bondurant has a nose for the football evidenced by a team-best eight career interceptions and 24.5 tackles for loss in four seasons. He picked off a Connor Halliday pass last year in Tucson. Hard Edge Up Front: In Arizona s defense, linemen don t get to rack up the stats as much as they might in a four-man front in other systems. Because of that, the contributions of seniors Dan Pettinato and Reggie Gilbert can easily be overlooked. Both are experienced, dependable and most of all tough players that have bought into the system. Pettinato has collected 19 tackles this season, including 1.5 for loss and a sack, which forced a fumble of Marcus Mariota in a win at Oregon earlier this month. Gilbert has added 16 tackles of his own, including 3.0 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks, while forcing a fumble against USC two weeks ago. Their experience is invaluable as they can shift around to multiple positions up front, giving the Wildcats flexibility, especially against passing teams. Gilbert has two sacks last season against the Cougars. 60 Minutes of Arizona: Rich Rodriguez picked up his 21st victory at Arizona when the Wildcats stunned No. 2 Oregon at Autzen Stadium on Oct. 2. Arizona trailed 7-3 at halftime and later in the third quarter, but the Wildcats seemed to be the strong team late in the game, and a deficit was nothing to cause concern. Of Rodriguez s 21 wins with the Wildcats, his squad has trailed at some point in 14 of those contests illustrating that the Wildcats are never going to stop fighting. The four most notable include double-digit deficits in wins against Oklahoma State (down 14-0, won in 2012), USC (down 28-13, won in 2012), Nevada (down 21-0, won in 2012) and against California (down 28-6, won on Sept. 20 this year). One of the constants in those games has been explosive fourth quarters. Since 2000, the Wildcats have scored 21 or more fourth-quarter points on seven total occasions and three of those occurrences have been in the aforementioned California (36 points), Nevada (21) and Oklahoma State (22) wins under Rodriguez. It truly is 60 minutes of Arizona. Outta This League: In two-plus seasons at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is a perfect 11-0 against non-conference opponents. That includes two victories over each of the three non-conference teams on the slate this season. The Wildcats have defeated UNLV by identical margins in each of the last two years, and downed UTSA after winning in Tucson last season. The third opponent the Cats faced this season was Nevada, which Arizona rallied to upend, 49-48, at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl and then dispatched last week in Tucson with a win. The Graduates: Five of Arizona s starters have already earned their degrees from the school. Bookend tackles Mickey Baucus (economy and industry) and Fabbians Ebbele (economy and industry) have combined for 77 career starts on the offensive line and each has a degree in hand. On the defensive side of the ball, lineman Dan Pettinato (sports and society) and defensive backs Jared Tevis (finance) and Jonathan McKnight (social behavior and human understanding) have also earned their degrees. Up Next: Arizona remains on the road for a Pac-12 showdown at UCLA next Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The game has been selected for a national television broadcast on ESPN beginning at 7:30 p.m. PDT. Thereafter, the Wildcats return home to play three of their final four regular season games at home, including Homecoming against Colorado on Nov. 8. Time and television information for that contest is expected to be announced Monday, Oct. 27, by the Pac-12 Conference and its television partners Arizona Football Game 7 at Washington State

(AP) -- Connor Halliday threw 25 yards to Isiah Myers for the tie-breaking touchdown with 2:15 to play to give Washington State a upset over Arizona on Saturday. Halliday completed 39 of 53 passes for 319 yards and two scores, the junior s seventh 300-yard passing of the season. Ka Deem Carey scored both touchdowns for Arizona (6-4, 3-4 Pac-12) on a 30-yard run and a 7-yard reception from B.J. Denker. Carey gained 132 yards on 26 carries, his 13th consecutive 100-yard game. On the final play of the game, from the Washington State 13, Denker s pass to Samajie Grant in the end zone was caught well out of bounds. The Cougars (5-5, 3-4) had lost their previous three games by a combined score of Halliday s first touchdown pass, 23 yards to River Cracraft, came after Arizona s botched punt attempt at the start of the second half. Jake Smith missed field goals of 40 and 34 yards for Arizona. Washington State s Andrew Furney had a 46-yard attempt bounce off the left upright. The Cougars winning 80-yard drive came after Smith missed the 34-yarder with seven minutes to go. On third and nine from the Washington State 38, Halliday threw 10 yards to Dom Williams. Halliday hit Teondray Caldwell for 19 yards to the Arizona 31. Then on third-and-four at the 25, Halliday threw to the wide open Myers, who dodged a tackler and ran a few steps to the end zone. The Wildcats moved downfield and, on fourth and seven from the 28, Denker scrambled nine yards to the 19 for the first down. But Denker was caught at the 13 on third and six and Arizona, without any timeouts left, rushed to the line to get off a final play. Denker lofted it to the end zone and Grant hauled it in, but was a step out of bounds and the Cougars rushed the field in celebration. The Wildcats spotted the Cougars a 10-0 lead, then got a pair of touchdowns from Carey -- one rushing, one receiving -- to lead at the half. Marcus Mason s 15-yard touchdown run put Washington State up 7-0, then Furney s 24-yard field goal made it 10-0 with 2:05 left in the first quarter. Arizona struck quickly after the subsequent kickoff, Carey -- in his 13th consecutive 100-yard rushing game -- breaking a series of arm tackles on a 30-yard touchdown run to cut it to 10-7 with 47 seconds still left in the opening quarter. The Wildcats took the lead with a 15-play, 90-yard touchdown drive. Denker threw wide to Carey, who broke two tackles on a 7-yard scoring play to put the Wildcats ahead with 7:37 left in the half. It was Carey s first touchdown catch of the season. Arizona threatened again late in the half, but Smith s 40-yard field goal try was wide left as the second quarter ended. The Wildcats took the second-half kickoff and went three-and-out, then Drew Riggleman dropped the ball trying to punt and Washington State recovered at the Arizona 31. On second-and-18, Halliday threw over the middle to Cracraft for a 23-yard touchdown and the Cougars were back on top The Wildcats moved down the field on their next possession, but their drive stalled at the WSU 8 and Smith s 25-yard field goal tied it at 17 with 6:36 left in the third quarter. The Cougars, in their first game in 16 days, had a chance to take the lead with 10:24 left in the third quarter but Furney s 46-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. 10 Rich Rodriguez enters his third season as head coach of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as Arizona s 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Rodriguez carries a career record of in 21 seasons, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He is the first coach in Arizona history to lead the program to bowl games in his first two seasons at the helm. In Rodriguez s second season, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona also knocked off a top-10 ranked team for the second-straight season with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Senior B.J. Denker threw for 2,516 yards, completing 233 of 381 attempts with just seven interceptions, and connected on 16 scores to eight different receivers. Showing his versatility, Denker also rushed for 949 yards on 181 attempts with 13 scores. The 2012 season proved successful for Arizona in Rodriguez s spread-offense, no-huddle system. The Cats beat No. 10 USC, 39-36, on Oct. 27 en route to an 8-5 season and a win over Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Carey led the nation in total rushing yards (1,929) and yards per game (148.38) while rewriting the Arizona record book. For his efforts, Carey was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a consensus All-American, UA s first on the offensive side of the ball. Rodriguez inherited a fifth-year senior in quarterback Matt Scott who was perfectly suited to run the Wildcat offense. With Scott as signal caller, Arizona was 7-5 as he orchestrated come-frombehind wins against No. 10 USC and Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors, Scott led the conference in yards per game with and ranked No. 2 in the league in total yardage. Austin Hill totaled 81 catches for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the Wildcat receivers in He was named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist, second-team All-Pac-12 and fourth-team All-America by Phil Steele. (AP) Anu Solomon threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start, and Arizona broke a 45-year-old school record with 787 total yards in a season-opening rout over Nevada-Las Vegas Friday night. Solomon shook off some early-game jitters with a series of big plays to break the school freshman record for passing yards, highlighted by a 92-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hill on the first play of the second half. Terris Jones-Grigsby laid the groundwork, running for 124 yards and a touchdown in Arizona s first game in three years without two-time All-American Ka Deem Carey. Freshman Nick Wilson added an 85-yard touchdown run to help the Wildcats break the school record of 691 total yards, set against New Mexico in UNLV failed to capitalize on a few early offensive opportunities and had no chance once Arizona got rolling for its second straight lopsided loss to the Wildcats. Blake Decker threw for 252 yards and a touchdown in his debut for the Rebels, who lost to Arizona by the same score last season in Las Vegas. Solomon spent his freshman season learning Arizona s system while redshirting behind B.J. Denker, then emerged from a four-way battle to start this season s opener. Coach Rich Rodriguez said Solomon wouldn t have to worry about looking over his shoulder if he makes a mistake, but added the other quarterbacks would likely play this season, if not Friday. Solomon, who s from Las Vegas, had a bit of trouble with his touch early, overthrowing a couple of long passes, including one to Samajie Grant that would have been a touchdown. He finally dialed one late in the first quarter, dropping in a pass behind coverage for a 39-yard touchdown to Nate Phillips. Solomon kept the big plays rolling after that, squeezing a ball in front of coverage to Grant, who turned it into a 63-yard touchdown pass. Solomon added a 13-yard scoring pass to Davonte Neal that put Arizona up 24-6 at halftime. Solomon opened the second half with the 92-yard catch-and-run TD to Hill and Jones-Grigsby was rewarded for his hard work with a 2-yard touchdown run that made it Solomon finished 25 of 44 and completed passes to 10 different players. Hill (110) and Grant (101) each went over 100 yards receiving. Like Solomon, Decker won a close quarterback battle, edging out junior Nick Sherry after transferring from Scottsdale Community College. Decker was able to gouge out a few big chunks in the first half, including a 52-yard pass to Devonte Boyd and a 49- yard run. The Rebels couldn t capitalize on the good field position, settling for a pair of field goals and a 43-yarder that Jonathan Leiva missed at the horn. Decker hit Anthony Williams on a 2-yard score early in the third quarter, but it was too late; Arizona was well on its way to another blowout. Arizona (3-0) came into the game with the nation s fifth-best offense and had another big night against the Wolfpack, rolling up 507 yards. Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and gave Arizona a 100-yard rusher for the 20th straight game, tied for longest in the FBS since Solomon finished 22-of-26 passing and threw two second-half touchdown passes to Cayleb Jones, who had nine catches for 116 yards. Cody Fajardo kept Nevada (2-1) in it, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wolfpack turned the ball over on downs their last drive. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said after the 2012 New Mexico Bowl that he hoped to never face Fajardo again. The Wolfpack quarterback lit up the Wildcats in that game, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 140 and another score. Fajardo, on the other hand, was looking forward to facing Arizona again. Despite having what may have been the best game of his career in the bowl game, Nevada lost the game after the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final minute. Fajardo had some success against Arizona early as the Wolfpack picked their way down the field. Nevada held the ball for the game s opening 9:33 and had another scoring drive that lasted 6:08. The problem for the Wolfpack was how both ended: in field goals. Thirty-two plays, 141 yards and more than 15 minutes resulting in just six points -- a dangerous game against an explosive offense like Arizona s. The Wildcats needed just 1:50 to score their first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Wilson. The freshman scored the next one, too, bursting off left tackle for a 28-yard score. Solomon, who threw an ill-advised interception early in the second quarter, showed off his athletic ability just before halftime, rolling to the left and throwing off his back foot to hit Tyrell Johnson perfectly in stride for a 35-yard touchdown. Fajardo finally got the Wolfpack into the endzone after that, orchestrating a quick 75-yard drive capped by his 7-yard touchdown pass to Jarred Gipson that cut Arizona s halftime lead to The confidence of seeing six points go up on the board instead of three carried over into the third quarter, when Fajardo opened with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hasaan Henderson. Arizona had an answer. Two, in fact. Solomon threw another touchdown on the run, this one going the other way, this one a 22-yarder to Jones. The Solomon-Jones connection worked again on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 24-yarder that put the Wildcats up Nevada and Fajardo still weren t done. He found Jarred Gipson on a 6-yard touchdown pass that cut Arizona s lead to and the Wolfpack got the ball back at their own 17-yard line with 3:04 left. Fajardo took Nevada to near midfield, but his fourth-down attempt was just out of Jericho Richardson s reach. Cal (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) threatened to turn Arizona s whiteout into a blowout, deflating the Wildcats and their white-shirt-wearing fans with two quick scores and a 22-point halftime lead. Arizona (4-0, 1-0) charged back behind Solomon, who threw for 520 yards and had four of his five touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats recovered an onside kick after Cal was called for a batting penalty and pulled within 2 after Solomon hit Cayleb Jones on a 15-yard scoring pass. Arizona got the ball back with less than a minute left and pulled off the miracle when Hill, a senior who missed last season with a torn ACL, brought the ball down between five Cal defenders. Solomon shook off a pair of first half interceptions to complete 47 of 73 passes, both school records. Jones caught 13 passes for 186 yards. Arizona finished with 627 total yards and Cal had 573. Behind Jared Goff, who threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns, Cal led heading into the fourth quarter. That s when Arizona kicked its high-octane offense in gear, marching for one score after another. Solomon hit Hill on a 9-yard touchdown pass, then Jones on a 16-yarder after Khalfani Muhammad scored on a 50-yard touchdown run. Muhammad scored again on a 6-yard run to put Cal seemingly in good position, up with just over 5 minutes left. But the Wildcats kept coming. James Langford hooked a 47-yard field goal left, turning the ball over to Arizona at its own 29-yard line with 52 seconds left. Solomon completed a couple of short passes before finding Hill on a 20-yard pass that moved the chains and briefly stopped the clock. Arizona raced to the line and Solomon spiked the ball to set up the final shot at the end zone. (AP) -- The look on Marcus Mariota s face was unmistakable: He was stunned. Oregon s star quarterback lingered on the field late Thursday night following his team s loss to Arizona, shaking hands with the Wildcats after they upset the heavily favored Ducks for the second consecutive season. Later, he shouldered the blame for a loss that left No. 2 Oregon with a tough hill to climb if it wants an invite to college football s first postseason playoff. And he credited the unranked Wildcats, who were 24-point underdogs. Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost told reporters after the game that Mariota was not 100 percent after he was sacked seven times in the Ducks victory at Washington State in their previous game Sept. 20. True freshman Nick Wilson ran for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass from quarterback Anu Solomon to help the Wildcats (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) open the season with five straight victories for the first time since Terris Jones-Grigsby plowed into the end zone from a yard out for the tiebreaking touchdown with 2:54 left, and Arizona held on after sacking Mariota and recovering his fumble.. With his team trailing going into the final quarter, Oregon s Matt Wogan made a 21-yard field goal. Mariota then hit Keanon Lowe with a 9-yard scoring pass to tie it with 8:21 left. With Arizona driving downfield, the Ducks (4-1, 1-1) sacked Solomon on third-and-8, but Tony Washington was called for unsportsmanlike conduct to give the Wildcats a first down. A pass interference call got Arizona closer for Jones-Grigsby s go-ahead touchdown. And on Oregon s ensuing series, Mariota was sacked by Scooby Wright, who stripped the ball from the Heisman Trophy hopeful and recovered it himself. Arizona then gained a clinching first down on the ground and ran out the clock, silencing Autzen Stadium s 100th straight sellout crowd. Mariota, who hugged Rodriguez after the game, threw for 181 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback also caught a TD pass but was sacked three times and turned the ball over for the first time all season. Last November, the No. 5 Ducks lost to Arizona in Tucson, dashing any hopes Oregon had of winning a national championship. The blowout victory was Arizona s first over a top-five team since knocking off No. 2 Oregon in This time around, Solomon, a redshirt freshman, threw for 287 yards and a touchdown for Arizona. The Ducks appeared to still be struggling with their unstable offensive line, with Tyler Johnstone, Andre Yruretagoyena and Jake Fisher all out with injuries. True freshman Tyrell Crosby and former walk-on Matt Pierson started for the second game at tackle. Oregon got creative to start the second quarter with Mariota handing off to freshman running back Royce Freeman, who lobbed the ball back to Mariota for a 28-yard touchdown. After a review for what appeared to possibly be a fumble at the goal line, the TD stood to put the Ducks up 7-3. The Ducks weren t the only ones making unusual plays. Solomon threw a 21-yard pass to himself -- helped by a carom off Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner. The Wildcats made it to the red zone, but Jones-Grigsby fumbled and the Ducks recovered on their own 10. Arizona opened the second half with a six-play, 80-yard drive capped by Wilson s 3-yard touchdown run to go up Oregon answered with its own scoring drive -- helped along by a taunting call on Arizona that gave the Ducks a crucial first down -- that ended when Mariota hit Devon Allen with a 6-yard pass to make it Wilson added a 2-yard scoring run to give the Wildcats back the lead. Before the third quarter was over, he added a 28-yard TD catch from Solomon to give Arizona a advantage going into the final quarter. The Ducks were hurt when starting defensive end Arik Armstead left the game midway through the second quarter with what appeared to be a left foot injury. Armstead was slow to get up on a third-down play and later retreated to the locker room with team trainers. Mariota threw for 329 yards and five touchdowns against Washington State but couldn t duplicate that performance. (AP) -- Southern California faced the prospect of a second straight stinging defeat, watching as another opponent moved into position for a gut-wrenching score. No Hail Mary this time, just a wide right -- and a big sigh of relief for the Trojans. Javorius Allen ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and USC escaped with a victory over No. 10 Arizona on Saturday night when Casey Skowron pushed a last-second 36-yard field goal wide right. USC (4-2, 3-1 Pac-12) left the Coliseum defeated and deflated a week ago after losing to Arizona State on a Hail Mary. The Trojans were headed toward another disheartening loss after Jared Baker scored on a 1-yard with 1:07 left and Caleb Jones recovered the onside kick following a failed 2-point conversion try. With the crowd roaring for another improbable victory by Arizona, the Wildcats came up short when Skowron missed his third field goal of the night with 17 seconds left. A seven-day emotional roller coaster over, the Trojans now find themselves atop the jumbled Pac-12 South. Arizona (5-1, 2-1) struggled with red zone issues in the first half and didn t have much of a run game with leading rusher Nick Wilson out and Terris Jones-Grigsby going down late in the first half. But, like they had so many times, the Wildcats came roaring back. Baker scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half, and Anu Solomon had another big night, throwing for 395 yards and a touchdown on 43-of-72 passing. The Wildcats put themselves in position to tie after Baker s 1-yard run, but he was stuffed by Williams on the 2-point try. They had a chance to win after Jones recovered the onside kick, but Skowron couldn t come through. No last-second jubilation this time, only disappointment for what could have been. It has been an emotional couple of weeks for Arizona as well. The Wildcats rallied to beat California on a Hail Mary on Sept. 20 and knocked off then-no. 2 Oregon on the road last week. The win over the Ducks vaulted the Wildcats from out of The Associated Press poll to No. 10 this week, the largest jump since the poll went to 25 teams in Arizona s task was to avoid a letdown against the Trojans, who rode into the desert with a different set of emotions after Arizona State s Hail Mary. Oddsmakers predicated a Wildcats hangover, installing them as 2 1/2-point underdogs despite their being undefeated and playing at home. The Trojans played like favorites from the start, moving the ball successfully against an Arizona defense that contained the Ducks a week ago, particularly when they gave the ball to Allen. The junior running back turned an inside handoff into a 34-yard touchdown run by bouncing it outside in the first quarter, then burst through a hole for a 48-yard score in the second. Gaining yards was not a problem for Arizona. Scoring touchdowns was. The Wildcats crossed USC s 20 four times in the first half and came away with six points. Skowron made two field goals, missed one and had another blocked. Arizona also lost a fumble late in the half, when Williams crushed Jones-Grigsby at the 7-yard line to pop the ball loose. USC led 14-6 at halftime in a game that was more defensive than anticipated. Once the second half started, so did the offensive fireworks. Cody Kessler found Nelson Agholor on a 21-yard touchdown pass, and Allen scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard run, putting the Trojans up Arizona finally found the end zone in the third quarter, when Baker scored on a 6-yard run, four plays after the Wildcats recovered Justin Davis fumble at USC s 22. Baker scored again early in the fourth quarter, turning a fourth-and-3 into a 41-yard touchdown reception out of the backfield that cut USC s lead to Just like in the California game, Arizona failed on a 2-point conversion but recovered an onside kick to get into position for a last-second win. This time, the Wildcats came up short -- or, wide right. The 5-0 start was the first for the school since 1998.» The Wildcats won the turnover battle (2-1), but lost the game. UA had been 11-0 in three seasons under Rich Rodriguez when winning the turnover battle.» Javorius Allen s 205 rushing yards for USC marked the first time an individual rank for 200 yards against UA since Oregon s LaMichael James ran for 288 yards on Sept. 24, 2011.» Jared Baker set a career high with three touchowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving). His 41- yard reception for a TD was a career-long, and he matched his personal best with 12 carries.» DaVonte Neal s 43-yard punt return was a career-long and the longest return play for UA this season.» UA last attempted a potential game-winning field goal in the final minute to win at ASU on Nov. 28, 2009 (32-yard kick by Alex Zendejas). Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon,
