3 Some Game Themes: In what was expected to be a pivotal non-conference showdown only a couple weeks ago, this week s cat fight between the Cats and Cougars has taken on a new, much more significant, storyline in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey Houston s opener with Lone Star State rival UTSA was postponed last weekend after the team relocated to Austin and then back home to help begin the relief and cleanup efforts on home soil For its part, Arizona has organized a charitable drive to fill the football team s equipment semi with items to help in the relief efforts. Following the game Saturday, the Cats truck will hit the road and tail the Cougars traveling equipment trailer back to Houston On the football front, this now becomes the Cougars season opener, which will be good for either an injection of optimism and energy, or maybe a dose of uncertainty and rust Regardless, this game could go a long way to defining the season for both programs. The Coogs have a first-year head coach, Major Applewhite, who has been with the program as offensive coordinator in recent seasons. They also have a highly talented quarterback in Scottsdale, Ariz., native Kyle Allen, who transferred from Texas A&M. While Allen was not named the starter out of camp, he s the most experienced of the bunch On the other side, Arizona did not name a starter leading up to its opener, but Brandon Dawkins a 10-game starter a year ago started an opener for the first time in his career. Paced by a deep backfield, Dawkins was the leading rusher in what was a 500-yard output on the ground in the thumping of Northern Arizona The Wildcats are one of the youngest teams in the country and it showed last Saturday. A total of 23 freshmen, including 13 true freshmen, played a week ago. Three of the true freshmen started on defense and a fourth took over kickoff duties on special teams Arizona was never threatened last week, but expects a big time battle this week on the national stage. Houston is an extremely talented team that has four-straight eight-win seasons and an impressive 22 victories over the last two seasons The home side hopes to energize its home patrons with more big plays like it has produced in the last two games (2016 finale and 2017 opener) with 10-plus yard per play averages Doing so against an athletic Houston defense will be tough, but the road through the Pac-12 will be equally as tough in the coming weeks So lace your shoes up, pull those chins straps a little tighter and let s get ready for a big time college football game this Saturday night at Arizona Stadium. Helping Hands: In response to Hurricane Harvey and the ongoing relief efforts in Texas, Arizona Athletics has called on those in the Tucson and Southern Arizona community to do their part to assist those who have and continue to be affected. Through donations, Arizona Athletics intend to fill the Arizona football equipment truck (a 48-foot, Suddath Relocation Systems semi) with various items this week and drive them to Houston following the football game against the Cougars on Sept. 9. More information on this drive can be found at com. Cats vs. Coogs: Arizona welcomes Houston to Tucson for the first meeting between these schools since 1986 The Wildcats won that most recent meeting, 37-3 (Sept. 6, 1986), to even the series after Houston claimed the first matchup with a victory on Oct. 11, 1969 Saturday s game will again be in Tucson, just like the first two matchups This week s meeting is also the first for UA against a team in the American Athletic Conference, which was created in 2013 and composed of most teams from the former Big East Conference The Wildcats are 2-4 all-time against current members of The American, including 1-1 against Houston, 1-1 against SMU and 0-2 against Tulsa. UA s most recent meeting with Houston (1986) is the last against any of those three current members. Quite the Encore: Arizona capped its frustrating 2016 season by running for a school-record 511 yards in last year s Territorial Cup victory over Arizona State. The record barely stood for one game. The Wildcats opened their new season by rushing for 506 yards on 47 total carries by nine players. No single player rushed for more than 92 yards, but eight (Brandon Dawkins, Nick Wilson, Nathan Tilford, Khalil Tate, Zach Green, Tyrell Johnson, JJ Taylor and Branden Leon) had a carry of at least 10 yards. Dawkins had two rushing touchdowns, while Green, Johnson, Leon and Rhett Rodriguez added their own scores in what was only the second 500-yard rushing performance in 114 seasons (1,087 games) of Arizona football. Big Plays: In its last two games (2016 season finale and 2017 opener), Arizona has racked up 1,183 yards of total offense on only 117 plays. That s an eye-popping average of 10.1 yards per play. Among the highlights are rushing touchdowns of 71, 66, 63, 55, 46 and 37 yards, plus passing scores of 64 and 63 yards. Then there s non-scoring rushes of 68, 56, 52, 30 and 26 yards. In last Saturday s game alone, six Wildcats had at least one rushing play of 24 yards, with four notching a scoring scamper of 37 yards or longer. Last week s tally match the output in a rout of New Mexico State in Interestingly, the Wildcats drubbing of Northern Arizona is only two years removed from when UA set its all-time single-game scoring record in a rout of the Lumberjacks in While it was only the second time the Cats have topped the 60-point barrier under Rich Rodriguez, it was the sixth time they have scored at least 58 points under the sixth-year head coach. Outta This League: Now in his sixth season, Rich Rodriguez and the Wildcats have compiled an impressive 18-2 record against teams that hail from conferences other than the Pac-12. Those 20 contests against non-conference opponents includes a perfect 12-0 mark at Arizona Stadium and a 3-1 record in bowls. Arizona s only losses in such games have incidentally come in the same stadium. The Wildcats lost the 2014 Fiesta Bowl against Boise State and last season s Cactus Kickoff Classic against BYU both at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Otherwise the Cats have been spotless home or away against non-pac-12 opponents under Rodriguez. Youth Movement: Arizona is surely one of the youngest teams in the Pac-12, if not the country, entering The Wildcats roster includes 61 freshmen (including redshirts) on the 120-man roster. Yes, over half the roster is a freshman eligibility-wise and there are more freshmen than sophomores, juniors and seniors combined. Furthermore, 83 of the 120 players are freshmen or sophomores, and the roster includes 77 players in their first or second year of the program. Lastly, among all classes of eligibility, there are 48 players in their first year of the program. Youth Movement Part II: Arizona had 23 freshmen play in its season opener versus NAU. Of those 23 freshmen, 13 were true freshmen. In coach Rich Rodriguez s previous five seasons, the Wildcats had never played more than five true freshmen in a season opener. Arizona played five both in 2015 and In 2016, 2014 and 2012, the Cats played four. The 23 total freshmen is also the highest total under Rodriguez. The previous high was 11 set last year. Rodriguez played nine total freshmen in 2012 and Of the 13 true freshmen, three Kylan Wilborn, Tony Fields II and Scottie Young Jr. earned starting assignments. Redshirt freshman Lorenzo Burns also started at cornerback. Wilborn, who started at the STUD position on the defensive line had two tackles, one sack and a forced fumble in his collegiate debut. Young Jr., finished with four tackles and Fields II had three. Burns had seven tackles and a pass breakup. True freshman Jalen Harris, who played a key role as a reserve, finished with four tackles. Can t Touch This: Perhaps Arizona s most impressive rookie debut came from true freshman kicker Lucas Havrisik, who earned the starting job handling kickoffs for the season opener. If the initial performance is any indication, he ll be doing for some time. The Riverside, Calif., native produced nine touchbacks on 10 total kickoffs in the game. That effort was a big factor in Arizona enjoying a seven-yard advantage in average starting field position. Perhaps most impressive about Havrisik s nine touchbacks? That was the same total the Wildcats had over their final eight games in It s not a stat historically tracked, but nine touchbacks in a contest could well be the Arizona single-game record. No contest since the 2004 season has seen more than seven. To boot, Havrisk tallied his first career point by knocking home the game s final extra point. Turnover Turnaround? While only one game, a trend Arizona will want to keep an eye on this season is the turnover margin. A season ago, the Wildcats were 107th in the FBS with a minus-7 turnover margin. In the opener, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles intercepted two passes and Finton Connolly recovered a strip-sack caused by Kylan Wilborn to yield a plus-3 margin. The three takeaways would have ranked second-most in any game a season ago when the Cats caused only 14 turnovers over 12 contests. (Field) Positioned for Success: One of the most telling statistics since the start of the 2016 season has been the battle for field position. When Arizona has better starting field position than its opponent, it is 4-0. When the opponent has the advantage or its even, the Cats are a winless 0-9. In the opener against the Lumberjacks, Arizona s average starting position was its own 30-yardline, while NAU averaged its own 23-yardline. The recipe for the Cats last Saturday was turnover-free football combined with kicker Lucas Havrisik s nine touchbacks on 10 kickoffs and punter Jake Glatting s 41.0 average on five punts, including two inside the 20-yardline Arizona Football Game 1 vs. NAU

5 A Special Start: Arizona s first touchdown of 2017 came on Shun Brown s 66-yard punt return against Northern Arizona with 10:12 remaining in the opening quarter of the season. The last time the Wildcats first touchdown of a season came on a special teams score was Chris McAlister s 100-yard kickoff return against Hawai i on Sept. 3, McAlister s memorable return came on the game s opening kickoff and spurred the Wildcats to a 12-1 season. No foreshadowing Arizona s record some months down the road, but it was an electrifying way to get on the scoreboard. Two years ago, Anthony Lopez had a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown against UTSA for the first six-pointer of the 2015 campaign. Early Returns: Shun Brown s 66-yard punt return for a touchdown and Tyrell Johnson s career-long 58-yard kickoff return helped produce 203 total return yards for the Wildcats. Consider that a year ago Arizona s season-high for return yardage was some 96 yards and it s easy to understand the significance of 200-plus yards in the return game. It had been 26 games since UA last produced a 200-plus yard output, which came against Oregon in the 2014 Pac-12 Championship game when Johnson set the school single-game record with 211 yards on eight kick returns. Brown s touchdown was UA s first on a punt return since Nate Phillips 69-yarder against Washington State on Oct. 24, Pick-6: No, we re not talking interceptions returned for touchdowns, but we are talking about No. 6 picking passes. Junior bandit safety Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles intercepted a pair of passes in the season opener, increasing his career tally to five. Interestingly, Flannigan-Fowles first career interception came two years ago against the Lumberjacks on Sept. 19, The number 6 is also notable because it was worn by Arizona legend and College Football Hall of Famer, Chuck Cecil, back in the 1980s. Cecil, a longtime NFL defensive assistant, joined the UA staff in July as a senior defensive analyst. A hard-hitting safety himself, Cecil holds the Wildcats career record with 21 interceptions from While Cecil is unable to coach and instruct players on the field, he is a valuable mind in the film and meeting rooms analyzing and game-planning. Glad to have Glatting: Punter Jake Glatting finished the 2016 season as the starting punter in the final two games of the season and he has held on to that title at the start of the 2017 campaign. His season debut saw him punt a career-high five times for 205 last Saturday, with two punts down inside the 20-yardline. Glatting, who also holds on place kicks, has now punted 15 times for 599 yards (39.9 average) in his brief career as the primary punter. While he s down six of those 15 punts inside the 20-yardline, perhaps most impressive is that only three of his 15 boots have been returned for a grand total of eight yards. Direction and placement are as important as distance in the punting responsibilities. Touchdown Tony: Redshirt junior Tony Ellison entered Arizona s season opener with three career catches for 32 yards. He had one catch in 13 games as a freshman in 2015 and two last season. It sure didn t take long for him to surpass those totals Saturday in just one game. Ellison caught five passes for 79 yards and his first career touchdown. Ellison hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Dawkins early in the second quarter to put the Wildcats up Ellison took a short pass from Dawkins and used his speed in the open field to break away from defenders for a touchdown. Ellison was the only Wildcat to register multiple catches Saturday against the Lumberjacks. Quick Cats: Of Arizona s eight scoring drives Saturday against NAU, just one was over three minutes long. Arizona averaged 4.25 plays per scoring drive, spanning 62.9 yards. The Wildcats average scoring drive was just 1 minute and 40 seconds. Take away Arizona s last two scores that came in the fourth quarter and the team s average scoring drive dips to 1:11. Arizona had three scoring drives that were three plays or less. The big play certainly helped with five of Arizona s eight offensive touchdowns being plays of 35 or more yards. The senior from Fresno, California is currently 10th all-time at Arizona with 2,511 rushing yards on 433 carries. With 20 yards, he ll pass Clarence Farmer for ninth all-time. With a 1,000-yard season, Wilson could climb to as high as fourth all-time at Arizona. Wilson has 28 career rushing touchdowns to his credit, which is tied with Nic Grigsby for third all-time in school history. Wilson rushed for a freshman-record 1,375 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2014 and has battled injuries the past two seasons, being held to 189 carries over two years. His ability certainly hasn t dipped, however, as he still has averaged 5.6 yards per carry. For his career, Wilson is averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He s also proven to be a capable pass catcher with 18 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown in his career. See charts on bottom of page 7 for full lists. All of the Starts: Experience certainly won t be an issue for the big boys up front for the Wildcats this season. The Arizona offensive line features six players who have started at least four games each. All total, the Wildcats have 94 returning starts and 122 games played returning among their top six linemen. Redshirt senior right guard Jacob Alsadek leads the way with 36 career games played and 34 starts. Senior left tackle Layth Friekh has 26 career games and 22 starts to his credit. Another senior, Gerhard De Beer, has played in 22 games over the past three seasons with 13 starts. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Nathan Eldridge started all 12 games at center last year, while fellow redshirt sophomore Cody Creason has 12 games and four starts on his resume. Eldridge started his 13th game Saturday night and Creason split time with de Beer at right tackle. Finally, redshirt junior Christian Boettcher has played in 12 games with eight starts. Last season, Eldridge became the first UA freshman to start at center since Blake Kerley in Both players went on to start all 12 games that season. The big boys up front have helped Arizona rush for 1,017 yards over the last two games, which is a two-game program record. Dartin Dawkins: Redshirt junior quarterback Brandon Dawkins picked up where he left off last season with his ground production in Saturday s opener versus NAU. Dawkins rushed for 92 yards on just seven carries. He ripped off a 66-yard touchdown sprint and also scored on a 10-yard run. Dawkins now has 1,215 rushing yards in his career, which is the second-most by an Arizona quarterback since at least The only quarterback to have more rushing yards than Dawkins is Ronald Veal, who rushed for 1,419 career yards. Dawkins also now has 12 career rushing touchdowns. For his career, Dawkins is averaging 7.1 yards per carry, which is the highest YPC ever by an Arizona quarterback with at least 100 carries. Dating back to last season, Dawkins has 363 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just 34 carries over his last three games. In that span, he s averaging 10.7 yards per carry. Through the air, Dawkins has one touchdown pass in nine of his last 11 games and has one in three straight. Dawkins also has just one interception over his last four games. He s also avoided a sack in three straight games. Career Rushing Yards by an Arizona Quarterback since 1958 Name Yards Yards Per Carry TDs 1. Ronald Veal 1, Brandon Dawkins 1, Matt Scott 1, Keith Smith 1, B.J. Denker 1, Wilborn in Rare Territory: The Wildcats got significant contributions from some new faces on the defensive line Saturday, but none bigger than Kylan Wilborn. Wilborn became the first true freshman defensive lineman at Arizona to start a season opener since at least Interestingly, Tedy Bruschi, a defensive end at Arizona before a standout career as a linebacker in the NFL, was slated to start the 1991 season opener as a true freshman. However, a training camp injury prevented that from happening and he didn t start until later in the season. He then sustained another injury and redshirted the season. Wilborn was a standout in his debut and had two tackles, including a sack where he forced a fumble that was recovered by fellow lineman Finton Connolly. Wilborn, from Northridge, California, quickly impressed coaches in training camp after a standout career at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. Wilborn had some company from other Wildcat rookies on the line. Fellow true freshman Jalen Harris had four tackles and junior college transfer Dereck Boles started and had three stops. True freshman Kurtis Brown also saw substantial time up front and had a pair of tackles Arizona Football Game 1 vs. NAU

7 NFL Cats: With NFL teams still finalizing their rosters before this weekend s openers, it appears nine former Wildcats will open the season on active rosters. Three more have been signed to practice squads to open the season. The headliner is of course Rob Gronkowski, who enters his eighth season in the NFL with 6,095 yards and 68 touchdowns on 405 catches. He ll have another former Wildcat on the roster with him in New England in linebacker Marquis Flowers, who was traded by Cincinnati near the end of training camp. Ka Deem Carey, who is entering his fourth NFL season, will open the season on the injured reserve after sustaining an injury in the preseason. Kicker Nick Folk won the job in Tampa Bay and will prepare to enter his 11th season as a pro, where he will play for former Arizona State head coach Dirk Koetter. Former Wildcats in the NFL Ka Deem Carey, running back, Chicago Bears Marquis Flowers, linebacker, New England Patriots Nick Foles, quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles Nick Folk, kicker, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Robert Golden, safety, Pittsburgh Steelers Rob Gronkowski, tight end, New England Patriots Earl Mitchell, defensive tackle, San Francisco 49ers Will Parks, safety, Denver Broncos Brooks Reed, defensive end, Atlanta Falcons Reggie Gilbert, linebacker, Green Bay Packers, practice squad Cayleb Jones, wide receiver, Minnesota Vikings, practice squad Scooby Wright, Arizona Cardinals, practice squad From the Diamond to the Gridiron: Arizona s roster features two players Donavan Tate and Malcolm Holland-- who spent a combined 10 seasons playing professional baseball. Tate played six seasons in the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers systems after being the No. 3 pick of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the Padres. He retired from baseball following the 2016 season. A top-tier quarterback prospect when he was at Cartersville High School in Georgia, Tate decided to give college football a try after his baseball career ended. Tate, now 26, reconnected with coach Rich Rodriguez, who recruited the quarterback out of high school. He moved to Tucson in the summer and has five years to play four seasons. Holland was a 33rd round pick of the Dodgers in 2011 and signed with the club. He retired after the 2014 season and joined Arizona in Holland, a former middle infield partner of current Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager in the minors, redshirted in 2015, before playing in all 12 games last year as a reserve corner and special teams contributor. Running Backs for Days: Arizona was one of just two teams to rush for more than 500 yards in the opening weekend of college football. Army rushed for 513 yards in a 64-6 win over Fordham and is tops in the country in rushing yards, with Arizona seven yards behind. As evidenced in Saturday s win over NAU, it appears this year s rushing attack will be balanced and dangerous. The Cats rushed for 506 yards against the Lumberjacks without a 100-yard rusher. Instead, Arizona had seven players with 40 or more yards. Included in that group are running backs Nick Wilson, JJ Taylor, Zach Green and Nathan Tilford. The four backs combined for 267 yards on 26 carries. Wilson and Green are both seniors, while Taylor and Tilford will learn from the veterans as freshmen. Tilford, a true freshman, had 79 yards on four carries, including a 65-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Branden Leon, another running back who was awarded a scholarship before the season, had 30 yards and a touchdown on five carries. The Cats seem to be picking up where they left off from last year when they led the Pac-12 in rushing with 235 yards per game. More on Magee: Since arriving at Arizona prior to the 2012 season with Rich Rodriguez, running backs coach and co-offensive coordinator Calvin Magee has proven to be one of the top assistant coaches in the country. In Magee s now five-plus seasons with Arizona, the Wildcats have rushed for 12,872 rushing yards and have never been worse than 41st in the country in rushing offense. Magee and the Cats have had success, no matter the personnel. In 2012 and 2013, Magee mentored All-American Ka Deem Carey as he shattered the Arizona record books. In 2014, current Wildcat Nick Wilson had the finest freshman season in school history and is himself climbing the record books now as a senior. In 2015 and 2016, Magee had to navigate various injuries, but still saw Arizona produce 2,886 rushing yards in 2015 and 2,820 yards last year with converted wide receiver Samajie Grant starting at running back the last handful of games. None of the three had coached with Rodriguez previously, but from spring through summer the first-year assistants have formed a good chemistry with the staff veterans. Aych joins the UA staff after a season at UTEP (the Cats opponent in Week 3) and takes over for Tony Dews, who worked with UA s receivers the last five years. Reliable targets Samajie Grant, Trey Griffey and Nate Phillips have graduated, but Aych gets the benefit of having Shun Brown emerge as a leader at the receiver position in Meanwhile at linebacker, Boone s arrival allows for coordinator Marcel Yates to bump back to coaching a position of familiarity cornerback. Boone s expertise is at linebacker, and with coordinator experience himself, has proven to be a critical asset working with the Wildcats talented, but incredibly inexperience group of players in the mix. And then there s Knorr, who was hired as the special teams coordinator but quickly assumed additional responsibilities. In spring practice, Knorr also took over working with UA s defensive ends and STUDs, a position that is a hybrid end/linebacker position that allows can shift between a 4-down or 3-down look up front. By the end of preseason camp, each coach seemed well adjusted to his position group and vice versa. Same Faces: Despite three new coaches, Arizona s coordinators are the same on both sides of the football. Co-offensive coordinators Calvin Magee and Rod Smith, each of whom has coached with Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona, are back for their sixth seasons. Magee works with UA s running backs, which is perhaps the deepest position of talent on the roster. The veteran aide also welcomed tight ends to his position group oversight this past spring when Charlie Ragle left for a position at California. On game day, Magee will be joined by Smith, who coaches quarterbacks, in the pressbox. Next to them, along with a few GAs and other staffers, will be Yates, the second-year defensive coordinator. Yates has shifted his position group focus from linebackers a year ago to cornerback, a unit he has a wealth of experience coaching at previous schools. The rest of UA s nine assistant coaches are expected to coach from the field on game days. Up Next: Arizona this the road and closes out non-conference play against UTEP at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Friday night, Sept. 15. The game will be televised by ESPN beginning at 8:15 p.m. (MDT) or 7:15 p.m. in Tucson (MST) Arizona Football Game 1 vs. NAU

10 The 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Rich Rodriguez begins his sixth season at the helm of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as the Wildcats 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Entering the 2017 season, Rodriguez carries a career record of in 22 seasons, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He began his head coaching career at Salem (W.Va.) University in 1988 and then coached at Glenville State (W.Va.) from Rodriguez s third season with the Wildcats was highlighted by a 10-4 record, a Pac-12 South Championship, a Fiesta Bowl berth and winning the Territorial Cup game against ASU. Arizona finished the regular season with 10 wins for only the third time in program history as Rodriguez was named the 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. The streak continued as Rodriguez and the squad defeated a top-10 ranked program for the third-straight campaign with a road victory over No. 2 Oregon on Oct. 2. Offensively, quarterback Anu Solomon became the first freshman ever to start a season opener for the school and went on to throw for 3,793 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and only nine interceptions. He owns the UA freshman records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, pass attempts (540) and pass completions (313). Freshman Nick Wilson collected seven games with 100+ yards and with his 1,375 markers on the season, he set the school freshman rushing record. Linebacker Scooby Wright III was easily the nation s most prolific defender. Based on a vote of head coaches, media and college athletics personnel, he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award, all given annually to the nation s top defender. Also the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, he ranked in the top five among FBS players for total tackles (163), tackles for loss (29.0), sacks (14.0) and forced fumbles (6). Wright is UA s sixth all-time unanimous All-American. In 2013, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona knocked off a top-10 ranked team with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Carey recorded 16-straight games in which he eclipsed the century mark rushing, the longest streak in Pac-12 history and the longest for any FBS player in the last 10 seasons. (AP) Brandon Dawkins accounted for three touchdowns and Arizona ran for 506 yards to open the season with a victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday night. Arizona struggled to slow the FCS Lumberjacks and sputtered on offense in the first quarter before coming alive. Shun Brown sparked the Wildcats with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown and Dawkins got their offense going with his arm and his legs. The junior ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, and threw for 89 yards and a score to help the Wildcats win their 17th straight home opener. Arizona had six different players score rushing touchdowns and fell just short of the school record of 511 yards rushing set in the 2016 season finale against Arizona State. Case Cookus threw for 306 yards on 21-of-38 passing for Northern Arizona, but also had three turnovers. Cory Young ran for 115 yards and two scores. The Lumberjacks had a rough trip to Tucson two years ago, losing as Arizona set school records for points, total yards (792) and rushing yards (499). Northern Arizona was much better defensively at the start and had no trouble moving the ball against Arizona s young defense. The Lumberjacks broke off several long plays, including Young s 58-yard touchdown run, and outgained the Wildcats in the first half. The problem was turnovers. Cookus lost a fumble when he was blindsided in the first quarter, setting up Wilson s 46-yard touchdown run. Cookus later tried to squeeze a pass into coverage near the end zone that was picked off by Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles at the 1-yard line. Flannigan-Fowles had another pick late in the half, setting up a 10-yard scoring run by Dawkins that put Arizona up at halftime. Dawkins raced off for a 66-yard touchdown to open the second half and Arizona s defense, which gave up 203 yards in the first quarter, slowed the Lumberjacks before allowing a couple of late scores with the game out of reach. THE TAKEAWAY Northern Arizona proved it can move the ball on offense, but can t afford the turnovers, particularly against an FBS team. Arizona did what it was supposed to against an FCS school, but there are still questions on defense. UP NEXT Northern Arizona faces Western Illinois next Saturday. The Wildcats rushed for 511 yards against Arizona State in the 2016 season finale to establish a new school record. The 506 rushing yards gained Saturday night against Northern Arizona are the most ever in a nonconference game. Arizona managed to crack the 500-yard mark without a 100-yard individual rusher. The Wildcats leading rusher was quarterback Brandon Dawkins, who rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Nick Wilson added 87 yards on eight carries. The Wildcats have rushed for 1,017 yards over their past two games, which is the highest two-game total in program history. Arizona had never had a 500-yard rushing game until the 2016 season finale. Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon,
