3 Some Game Themes: Home sweet home. At least that s what the Wildcats hope to be saying this week as the University of Arizona celebrates the 100th anniversary of the school s first Homecoming Arriving with intentions of a different kind will be Colorado, a competitive squad that has been oh-so-close in a number of Pac-12 games but is still searching for its first conference victory The task for Arizona is simple: put a discouraging loss behind itself and get back to doing the basics that are sometimes taken for granted. One such item might be establishing the ground game, slowed last month when backs Terris Jones-Grigsby and Nick Wilson were both banged up. Doing so would alleviate some of the pressure put on the arm of Anu Solomon, a poised freshman passer who must shake a subpar outing last week The Buffs bring with them another acclaimed passer Sefo Liufau who has numbers quite similar to Solomon, though he has given away the ball a few more times Liufau has a stable of targets, but the preferred option is Nelson Spruce, a Pac-12 leader in multiple receiving categories One thing CU does well is maintain balance. Five players have 20 receptions and five have 48 or more carries, so the offensive weapons are aplenty. Liufau is not one to sleep on as a run threat, either An interesting area of contrast is in the scoring breakdown. The Wildcats have jumped on opponents in the first and third quarters this season, while the Buffaloes have struggled in each of those opening periods Expect a lot of plays: both squads run 85-some plays and rack up more than 27 first downs a game Keep an eye on the running backs for these teams, too. Both use them to supplement the passing game, which stresses the defense in underneath coverages In similar fashion, pressuring the passer may be difficult this week. CU has allowed only 15 sacks this season, while UA has surrendered 18 both figures are among the top two fewest allowed in the Pac-12 Turnovers, always a table-turner, may be especially critical, too. Arizona has surrendered only three points off its own turnovers all season. On the other, opponents have scored 69 points of Colorado turnovers When it s all said and done, this is an important game. Colorado, a clearly improving program, is searching for its statement win under second-year coach Mike MacIntyre. Conversely, third-year coach Rich Rodriguez has his team in the thick of things in the Pac-12 South, but must refocus his group so that last week s setback doesn t linger into the next game Saturday begins the final quarter of the season for the Cats, who have three of their last four games at home. Last Week: Arizona started quickly before its offense stalled, and UCLA was able to take control during a brief span in the third quarter to upend the visiting Wildcats, 17-7, last Saturday at The Rose Bowl. The Cats took the opening drive and scored when Anu Solomon completed a 14-yard pass to Cayleb Jones in the endzone, but those would be the final points of the night. The Bruins, playing rambunctiously with a flurry of early penalties to aid the Cats, seemed to be the aggressor and it paid off when UA was unable to capitalize the rest of the game. UCLA limited what can be an explosive UA ground attack to a scant 80 yards, and found ways to pressure Solomon and force the ball out of his hand quickly. Complicating things for the Wildcats: they were always facing a long field when they got the ball. Matt Mengel placed six of his seven punts inside the 15-yardline, while Adam Searl added another one inside the 20. Still, Arizona found itself in the game throughout thanks to its defensive effort. While the Cats gave up some yards, they made things difficult on the Bruins. Scooby Wright had a monster effort with 19 tackles, including three more sacks, and he accounted for 4.5 of the club s 11 tackles for loss. However, Brett Hundley found a way to make enough plays usually with his feet to move the chains and UCLA capitalized during a pivotal stretch in the third period. The Cats had led 7-3 all the way into third quarter, but Paul Perkins punched in a five-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play drive and give the home side a 10-7 lead. On the ensuing possession, UA went three-and-out in just 40 seconds to give the Bruins the ball at their own 30-yardline. A hitch-and-go route by Jordan Payton got corner Cam Denson to bite, and Hundley hit his receiver for a 70-yard score which proved to put the game away. The Cats tried to get back in the game, but two later drives stalled and ended with a missed and a blocked field goal. Arizona was held to its lowest offensive total 255 yards in the Rich Rodriguez era. Cats in the Polls: Arizona is ranked No. 21 in this week s Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the fifth-straight week the Wildcats have been ranked. After upsetting then-no. 2 Oregon in Eugene, Ore., on Oct. 2, Arizona vaulted from unranked to No. 10 the following week, marking the largest jump in the poll s history since it expanded to 25 teams back in The Wildcats then dropped a heartbreaker to USC on Oct. 11 and fell to No. 16 in the AP Poll the following week. After a bye, the Cats moved to No. 15 before gaining another spot after a win at Washington State on Oct. 25. After losing at UCLA last weekend, the Wildcats fell from No. 14 to No. 21. The Wildcats are also No. 21 in this week s Amway USA Today Coaches Poll. Scooby a Bednarik Award Semifinalist: Announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Monday, Arizona s sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright is one of 20 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to the most outstanding defensive player. Wright is one of five Pac-12 Conference players honored and one of six linebackers named to the list. At then-no. 25 UCLA on Saturday, Wright racked up a career-high 19 tackles, including 11 solo stops, to go with another career-best tally of 4.5 tackles for loss. He also registered three sacks to match a career high. In only five games against league foes, Wright has totaled 64 tackles, 15.5 for loss, 10.0 sacks, five forced fumbles (No. 1 among FBS players) and one fumble recovery. On the season, Wright totals 97 tackles, 18.5 for loss and 12.0 sacks. He is fourth nationally with 12.1 tackles per game, second nationally with 2.3 tackles for loss per game and second nationally with 1.50 sacks per game. Arizona in the NCAA Rankings Category Rk. In only five games against league foes, Wright has totaled 64 tackles, 15.5 for loss, 10.0 sacks, five forced fumbles (No. 1 among FBS players) and one fumble recovery. He is the only FBS player to rank in the top 20 individually for each of these four categories: tackles (97), tackles for loss (18.5), sacks (12.0) and forced fumbles (5). Set his career single-game high with 3.0 sacks in each of the last two games (at WSU, at UCLA). Wright s 19 tackles at UCLA last week were the most for a UA player since LB Marcus Bell had 20 at ASU on Nov. 27, Earlier this year, Wright totaled 18 tackles against Cal on Sept. 20. His 4.5 tackles for loss at UCLA match the most since Spencer Larsen had 4.5 at USC on Oct. 13, Wright has at least 1.0 tackle for loss in all eight games this season. He has a sack in seven of the eight contests, including one in each of the last five games. Wright, from Windsor, Calif., has 49 tackles, 11.5 for loss and 6.0 sacks in three games against teams from his home state (California, USC and UCLA). Wright s 12.0 sacks currently are tied for fourth-most on the school s all-time single-season list. His 18.5 tackles for loss are 1.0 behind Tedy Bruschi (1995) for fifth-most in school single-season history A Nu Era: Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon (pronounced: AH-new) is putting together an impressive rookie season. Here are some highlights Leads all FBS freshmen in passing yards per game (325.6) and total offense per game (350.5). Among all FBS quarterbacks, Solomon ranks No. 6 in both passing yards per game and total offense per game. His 21 passing TD are second nationally among freshmen and No. 17 among all passers. Has thrown five touchdown passes in a game twice this season (California and at WSU) to set a UA freshman single-game record. Became the first freshman in UA history to start a season opener. Owns the UA freshman records for passing yards (2,605), passing touchdowns (21), pass attempts (364) and pass completions (218). Has thrown a touchdown pass in all eight games this season. Completes 57.5 percent of passes for 1,245 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions in the first half of games. Numbers improve significantly to 62.4 percent completions for 1,360 yards, 12 touchdowns and only interception after halftime. Averages 30.8 yards per pass on 21 touchdowns this season. Grounded Game: Arizona s ground game has been grounded over the last three games against USC, Washington State and UCLA. In those contests, the Cats are averaging yards per game, but a mere 3.3 yards per carry and have only three touchdowns. Compare that to the first five games of the year when the squad was rolling to yards per game a swift 5.2 yards per rush and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. The reasons are two-fold. Obviously credit the opposition for doing its part. But the Wildcats have endured some injuries to some key parts in the running machine. Running back Nick Wilson suffered an ankle injury at Oregon on Oct. 2, missed the USC game and hasn t been 100-percent the last two contests. Senior Terris Jones-Grigsby, hobbled earlier in the year, sustained an injury during the USC game, but has bounced back to start the last two games. Further, the Cats were without veteran guard Cayman Bundage for the USC game and senior tackle Mickey Baucus missed the majority of the game last week at UCLA. The first priority is getting healthy, and if that can be done, the Wildcats will benefit by finding success on the ground once again. A First Down First: For the first time this season, Arizona was held to fewer than 20 first downs. The Wildcats had 22 or more in all seven games, before UCLA held them to 19 last Saturday. Still, the Cats have a propensity for moving the chains this year. They do it 27.9 times per game, a figure that is best among the Pac-12 opposition and No. 3 in all of the FBS land. Looking at the Buffaloes, they like to rack up the first downs, too. Colorado has a Pac-12 best 245 on the season, a clip of 27.2 per game that is No. 6 in the FBS. Cayleb Hits the Big Five-Oh: Receiver Cayleb Jones has emerged as Arizona s big-play threat in the passing game and a comfortable go-to man for quarterback Anu Solomon. Jones has 50 catches for 716 yards and seven touchdowns to date, numbers that average out to 14.3 yards per catch and 89.5 yards per game. The transfer from Texas has three 100- yard receiving games thus far, and was added to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List in recent weeks. His biggest asset to the offense is his big-play prowess and ability to pick up some tough yards. Of his 50 receptions, 37 have resulted in first downs or touchdowns (74 percent). His receiving yards, yards per game, receptions per game and receiving touchdowns are all top-10 individual marks in the Pac-12 to date. Punting Prowess: It s never a good thing to have to punt the ball 10 times in a game, but if you re going to do it, you might as well do it well. Junior Drew Riggleman did just that last week at UCLA, booming his career-high 10 punts for a total of 477 yards an average of 47.7 yards. He downed three of those punts inside the 20, and boomed a career-best 70-yarder before halftime. Riggleman has quietly put together a fine season. The Tucson, Ariz., native has punted 36 times for an average of 47.2 yards. Looking at where that could stack up historically at UA is eye-catching. Danny Baugher (2005) holds the school record with an average of 47.5 yards per punt on 37 kicks. Riggleman s leg has helped produce a net average of 39.9, which is second-best this season in the Pac-12. The school record since the calculations of the net punting stat changed in 2005 is 38.3, set in Arizona Football Game 9 vs. Colorado

5 Behind Enemy Lines: One positive from the game at UCLA last week was the fact that Arizona s defense racked up 11.0 tackles for loss. Scooby Wright led the charge with a career-best 4.5 stops behind the line, but several others were in the fray as well. It was a noteworthy effort because the 11.0 tackles for loss were the most for the program since recording 13.0 at Washington State on Oct. 15, The effort improved the Cats season tally to 56 stops behind the line, an average of 7.0 per game that ranks No. 26 nationally and fifth in the Pac-12. Wright is second nationally with his 18.5 tackles for loss, but others like Jared Tevis (5.0), Derrick Turituri (5.0), William Parks (4.0), Cody Ippolito (4.0) Reggie Gilbert (4.0) have joined the party this season. For comparison s sake, UA s 56 tackles for loss in eight games this season are more than the team had during all of the 12-game season in 2011 (55 TFL) before coordinator Jeff Casteel arrived with Rich Rodriguez. Here s a look at the trends: Year TFL Per Game Dialing Up Pressure: Led by the relentless Scooby Wright (12.0 sacks), Arizona has been turning up the heat on opposing quarterbacks this season. The Wildcats have registered a sack in all eight games this season, the longest such stretch since tallying a sack in the first nine contests of the 2009 season, which going back to the 2008 campaign, was part of a 21-game stretch of games with a sack. This year s trend continues steady improvement for the unit in three seasons under coordinator Jeff Casteel, who hasn t had the benefit of an elite pass rusher on the defensive front. Instead he s had to be creative and rely on the hard edge mentality of his players. This year the force has come from Scooby Wright (12.0 sacks), Reggie Gilbert (3.0 sacks) and Derrick Turituri (3.0 sacks), who account for 18 of the team s 23 sacks to date. It averages out to 2.88 sacks per game, which ahead of the 2.54 clip turned in by the 2010 unit that was led all-conference defensive ends Brooks Reed and Ricky Elmore as a recent standard of success. Here s a look at the trends since: Year Sacks Per Game POTs: Arizona s first six games of the season produced 17 total points off turnovers all in favor of the Wildcats. Two weeks ago at Washington State, Arizona cashed in two turnovers gained for 14 points, while it surrendered its first three points off turnovers of the season. After no turnover scoring last week at UCLA, it s a 31-3 scoring edge for the Cats this year in points off turnovers. An informal survey of sports information directors reveals Arizona has allowed the fewest points off turnovers. This is an interesting component to consider for this week s game: Colorado has been outscored in points off turnovers this season. Notes to Forget: UCLA held the Wildcats offense to 255 total yards on 79 plays an average of 3.2 yards per play last Saturday at the Rose Bowl. The yardage figure is the lowest since Nebraska limited UA to 109 yards on Dec. 30, 2009, at the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. The 3.2 yards per play against the Bruins was also the lowest mark since that game against the Cornhuskers (2.1 ypp). In the Trenches: For all of Arizona s youth on offense, the Wildcats do have some experience along the offense led by fifth-year senior tackles Mickey Baucus and Fabbians Ebbele. The two bookends have combined for 94 starts, led by Baucus 46 which is a team-high at any position. Senior center Steven Gurrola (22 starts) and junior guard Cayman Bundage (20) add 42 more starts to the front-line experience. Lene Maiava (6) and Jacob Alsadek (5) have split time at the other guard spots this season, rounding out the offensive front that, in total, has 144 career starts to its credit. The experience has been necessary as injuries to Alasdek and Bundage have forced the Wildcats to shift personnel at times. Additionally, Baucus missed most of the UCLA game with an injury, which could jeopardize his streak of 46-consecutive games starting at left tackle. Negating the Negatives: For all the big plays produced by the Arizona offense, don t overlook some of the smaller plays. Led by an experienced offensive line, which has had to juggle some personnel to combat injuries, the Wildcats have surrendered few negative plays this season. In fact, Arizona has been tackled for a loss only 4.5 times per game this year, which is fewest in the Pac-12 and a top-20 figure nationally. Running backs account for only 20 negative rushing yards on some 220 rushing attempts. Otherwise, quarterback Anu Solomon, who has gained 318 rushing yards, has also lost 119 mostly on sacks. Austin Ascending the Charts: Senior wide receiver Austin Hill is moving up the list on several Arizona receiving charts. In his career, Hill has 132 receptions for 2,088 yards and 17 touchdowns. The 132 supplants Syndric Steptoe (2003-6) for No. 8 in school history, and trails Jon Horton ( ) at No. 7 with 136 grabs. From the yardage standpoint, Hill currently sits at No. 7 for receivers ahead of Dice (1,957) with a ways to go to catch Jon Horton (2,415 from ) for sixth place. In terms of receiving touchdowns, Hill moved ahead Horton and Rob Gronkowski ( ) to tie Richard Dice s mark of 17 for seventh place. Gorham One For One: Austin Hill extended one of his streaks, but saw another snapped last week at UCLA. The Corona, Calif., native had one catch for five yards against the Bruins, but left the game in third quarter after taking a hit above the shoulders that was not flagged. His lone reception gives him a catch in 25-consecutive games played, but his string of games with multiple receptions was snapped at 22 games. Scooby Strips: Linebacker Scooby Wright, a Sports Illustrated midseason All-American, forced three fumbles two weeks ago at Washington State, a mark that could well be a school record but is unknown. What is known is that Wright now has five forced fumbles this season all in the last four games which effectively ties the single-season record. The stat has been tracked in UA record books dating to 1973 and since then only Ricky Hunley (1983) and Chris Singleton (1988) have forced five fumbles in a season. Wright s three strips last week tie Ifeadi Odenigbo (Northwestern) for the most in a game this season, a tally that is one shy of the FBS single game record held by Nordly Capi (New Mexico vs. Colorado State in 2011). Wright is tied with Nigel Harris (South Florida) for most forced fumbles this season. DaVonte Did It: Sophomore receiver DaVonte Neal raced 81 yards for his first career punt return touchdown at Washington State on Oct. 25. A transfer from Notre Dame, Neal showed signs of breaking one with a 43-yarder against USC two weeks prior, and on his first try after a bye week took one to the house. It was Arizona s first punt return for a touchdown since Richard Morrison broke off a 63-yard scoot against Washington on Oct. 20, Perhaps more notable, the Wildcats had not returned a punt for a touchdown (excluding blocks) on the road since Bobby Wade raced 60 yards against the Huskies on Nov. 4, 2000, in Seattle. For Neal, his 81-yard return ranks tied for 10th-longest in school history and it is the longest by a Pac-12 player this season and fifth-longest among all FBS players. Neal now averages 21.7 yards on his six returns this season (130 yards). Bowl Eligible: By picking up their sixth win of the season, the Wildcats are bowl eligible for the third-straight season under Rich Rodriguez. Arizona has appeared in five bowl games over the last six seasons, and going to a sixth in seven seasons would be the first time the school has ever done so during such a time frame. Rodriguez led the Cats to a victory over Nevada in the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl and a win over Boston College in last year s AdvoCare V100 Bowl. Tevis a Tucson Talent: One overlooked star of the Arizona defense is senior safety Jared Tevis. A former walk-on from Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Tevis is known as one of the hardest hitters in the country despite his smaller stature (5-foot-11, 202 pounds). In eight games this season, Tevis is second on the squad with 74 tackles, a 9.25 stops per game clip that puts him third in the Pac-12. In his career, Tevis has started 30 games and racked up 245 tackles, along with seven forced fumbles and three interceptions. He s been named a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, College Football s Premiere Scholar-Athlete Award. A former walk-on and Tucson native, Tevis earned his undergraduate degree in finance in May 2014 with a cumulative GPA of He started graduate classes in business at Arizona s esteemed Eller College of Management this fall. He s a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team honoree with the potential to earn a third award during the 2014 season, and is a member of the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Bednarik Award Watch Lists this season. Tevis Shines: Senior safety Jared Tevis has turned in two strong outings recently at Washington State (Oct. 25) and at UCLA (Nov. 1). The Tucson, Ariz., native recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss against the Cougars, then followed it up with 10 more tackles against the Bruins. His production is getting lost for good reason behind Scooby Wright s sensation season, but don t overlook Tevis contributions. In eight games, Tevis is second on the squad with 74 tackles, including 5.0 for loss and a sack to go with an interception. Super Sophs: Receivers Nate Phillips and Samajie Grant are both turning in solid sophomore seasons following their impressive debuts as rookies a year ago. Phillips has 24 receptions for 267 yards and a pair of touchdowns this season, while Grant has grabbed 22 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown. In 2013, they combined for 98 receptions, 1,069 yards and eight touchdowns, with Phillips earning freshman All-American recognition for his contributions. Spread the Wealth: Quarterback Anu Solomon has a wealth of options in the passing game and to his credit he uses as many as he can. Two weeks ago at Washington State, Solomon completed a pass to 10 receivers, including a touchdown to five separate targets. On the season, he has completed a pass to 13 players, including once to himself, with nine Wildcats hauling in a receiving touchdown. Cayleb Jones (50-716, 8 TD) and Austin Hill (30-413, 4 TD) are the go-to guys, but nine players have at least 10 catches this season and another has nine receptions. Along with Jones and Hill, sophomores Nate Phillips (24-267, 2 TD), Samajie Grant (22-298, 1 TD) and Trey Griffey (20-205, 1 TD) have 20 grabs. Arizona is one of 11 schools nationally with five players who have 20 or more catches this season. at UCLA: A. Hill, F. Ebbele, D. Pettinato, B. Murphy Arizona Football Game 9 vs. Colorado

7 Fab Five: Just eight game into their careers, freshmen Anu Solomon and Nick Wilson have etched their names into the UA record books for some of best freshman performances in school history. Solomon already set the school single-game passing record (520 vs. California on Sept. 20), while Wilson has two 170-plus yard rushing games to claim two of top-five spots for freshman single-game rushing outputs. Now Solomon can already claim the single-season passing yardage record for any UA freshman, while Wilson is only 95 markers from the season rushing record. Here s a look at the top-five seasons for freshman and passing at Arizona: Freshman Passing (Season) Yards Player Year Comp-Att-INT-TD 1 2,605 Anu Solomon ,669 Ortege Jenkins ,501 Kris Heavner ,450 Keith Smith ,239 Ronald Veal Freshman Rushing (Season) Yards Player Year Att-Yards-TD Nic Grigsby Clarence Farmer Vance Johnson Nick Wilson Ronald Veal The Bullish Eighties: Arizona has produced four all-purpose plays of 80-plus yards this season (two passing, one rushing, one punt return). It s an eye-popping number considering the Cats had three combined 80-yard plays over the last three seasons and have not had four such plays in a single campaign since This year s big plays have come on Austin Hill s 92-yard receiving touchdown, Cayleb Jones 85-yard receiving touchdown, Nick Wilson s 85-yard rushing touchdown and DaVonte Neal s 81-yard punt return touchdown. 60 Minutes of Arizona: Rich Rodriguez picked up his 21st victory at Arizona when the Wildcats stunned No. 2 Oregon at Autzen Stadium on Oct. 2. Arizona trailed 7-3 at halftime and later in the third quarter, but the Wildcats seemed to be the strong team late in the game, and a deficit was nothing to cause concern. Of Rodriguez s 22 wins with the Wildcats, his squad has trailed at some point in 14 of those contests illustrating that the Wildcats are never going to stop fighting. The four most notable include double-digit deficits in wins against Oklahoma State (down 14-0, won in 2012), USC (down 28-13, won in 2012), Nevada (down 21-0, won in 2012) and against California (down 28-6, won on Sept. 20 this year). One of the constants in those games has been explosive fourth quarters. Since 2000, the Wildcats have scored 21 or more fourth-quarter points on seven total occasions and three of those occurrences have been in the aforementioned California (36 points), Nevada (21) and Oklahoma State (22) wins under Rodriguez. It truly is 60 minutes of Arizona. Outta This League: In two-plus seasons at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is a perfect 11-0 against non-conference opponents. That includes two victories over each of the three non-conference teams on the slate this season. The Wildcats have defeated UNLV by identical margins in each of the last two years, and downed UTSA after winning in Tucson last season. The third opponent the Cats faced this season was Nevada, which Arizona rallied to upend, 49-48, at the 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl and then dispatched last week in Tucson with a win. The Graduates: Five of Arizona s starters have already earned their degrees from the school. Bookend tackles Mickey Baucus (economy and industry) and Fabbians Ebbele (economy and industry) have combined for 77 career starts on the offensive line and each has a degree in hand. On the defensive side of the ball, lineman Dan Pettinato (sports and society) and defensive backs Jared Tevis (finance) and Jonathan McKnight (social behavior and human understanding) have also earned their degrees. Staff Continuity: In Year 3, Rich Rodriguez welcomed back his entire assistant coaching staff from last season. The staff continuity is a tangible sign that Rodriguez is building a solid foundation for the Arizona football program. In fact, Arizona has not had a season of full staff retention since 1999 when Dick Tomey and Co. returned following one of the most successful seasons in school history a 12-1 record capped with a Holiday Bowl victory over Nebraska in Since, John Mackovic saw turnover in each of his three seasons at the helm from , and Mike Stoops replaced at least one assistant coach in all eight of his seasons in Tucson. Up Next: Arizona remains at home to host Washington on Saturday, Nov. 15. Kickoff has been set for 1:30 p.m. (MST) with a live television broadcast on FOX. Thereafter, the Wildcats are on the road at Utah on Saturday, Nov. 22. Time and television information for that contest is expected to be announced next Monday, Nov. 10, by the Pac-12 Conference and its television partners. The University of Arizona was almost 30 years old when it hosted its inaugural Homecoming game on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, The monster crowd consisted of 1,500 fans to root the Cats to a 7-6 victory of Pomona College. At that time, student enrollment was 308, there were 47 faculty members, UA buildings numbered 18, and total UA land was a mere 40 acres. Fast-forward a century and today s Homecoming events attract well over 100,000 exuberant participants and supporters. Student enrollment is more than 40,000 while the number of faculty exceeds 1,500. The number of UA buildings is 180 on close to 400 acres, on campus and beyond. A full guide to this week s festivities celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first UA homecoming can be viewed at arizonaalumni.com/homecoming. The University of Arizona defeated Pomona College, 7-6, on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1914, at the first Homecoming game. The first Homecoming game to be played in Arizona Stadium was the stadium dedication game on Oct. 12, Arizona defeated Cal Tech, 35-0, before a crowd of some 6,000, including Gov. J.C. Phillips, who gave the dedication address. The first Homecoming Parade, featuring student-built floats driven around the new stadium track, also was held in The first Homecoming night game was played in 1931, a 32-0 loss to Rice, which was only the second UA loss in 17 Homecoming contests. Following that 1931 game under the lights, night games became the norm for Homecoming, with 19 of the next 24 games (through 1957). Homecoming games from 1958 through 1975 were daytime affairs, but night games predominated again for the next 20 years, with only one day game (1980) played between 1976 and Only world war has caused the University to suspend Homecoming festivities, with no games in 1918 or The 1942 game, a 20-6 victory over Oklahoma State, was designated at Arizona s 28th Homecoming game, but no formal events were held on campus due to wartime travel restrictions. Following World War II, one of Homecoming s most popular traditions began in 1947 with the election by the student body of the first Homecoming queen, Tucson sophomore Ruth Tackett. In 1988, the tradition was begun of crowning the Homecoming king and queen on Friday night at a bonfire and pep rally on the Mall near Old Main. In conjunction with the UA s Centennial celebrations in 1985, the west end of the Mall between Cherry and Campbell Avenues became the scene of Saturday s Tents on the Mall. Since that first game in 1914, Arizona has posted an overall winning record at Homecoming of (.583). In the Dick Tomey (the school s winningest coach) era, the Cats were 8-5-1, highlighted by 1992 s 16-3 victory over No. 1-ranked Washington before a record Homecoming game crowd of 58,510. The highest scoring Homecoming football game in the modern era was the 1980 shootout between Arizona and University of the Pacific, in which the Wildcats prevailed 65-35, setting a number of school and stadium offensive records that still stand. (AP) -- Ka Deem Carey rushed for four touchdowns and Arizona extended Colorado s Pac-12 losing streak to a dozen games with a win over the Buffaloes on Saturday night. Carey, the nation s leading rusher, ran for 119 yards on 23 carries. But it was his quarterback, B.J. Denker, who surprised the Buffs on the ground with a career-best 192 yards on 15 keepers. He got 100 of those yards on two scampers up the middle, a career-long 54-yard gem and a 46-yarder that got the Wildcats (5-2, 2-2) out from the shadow of their own goal line. Carey, who came in averaging 160 yards a game, scored from 1, 7, 1 and 6 yards out -- one TD in each quarter. He s now reached the end zone in nine straight quarters against the Buffaloes (3-4, 0-4). Last year, he rolled up a conference record 366 yards and five TDs on the Buffaloes. His last score Saturday night came after the Buffs tried a fake punt on fourth-and-5 from their own 17, but Trevor Ermisch tackled punter Darragh O Neill at the 18. Two plays later, Carey was in the end zone again for a lead. Denker also threw for 265 yards and a touchdown. Carey s best run of the night was a 30-yard scamper that set up another score in the first half that gave the Wildcats a lead at the break after they d spent much of the second quarter playing catch up. Colorado pulled to on Michael Adkins 1-yard TD run in the third quarter, but Carey s second 1-yard TD run restored the Wildcats double-digit lead, and they were never in trouble again. Casey s 7-yard TD run through a wall of tacklers gave Arizona the lead for good at with 2:28 left in the first half. But the `Cats weren t through. After forcing a three-and-out, Carey broke free for a 30-yard rumble to the Colorado 44 on first down, and Denker hit Nate Phillips on the next play with a pinpoint pass just as he crossed the goal line. Carey s first touchdown run capped Arizona s 14-play, 88-yard initial drive, but the Buffaloes needed just 13 seconds to tie it up. Paul Richardson beat cornerback Jonathan McKnight in single coverage, hauled in Sefo Liufau s pass at midfield and outraced McKnight into the end zone. Richardson s cousin, Arizona cornerback Shaquille Robinson, trailing the play, pleaded with the side judge to rule him out of bounds inside the 5, but a replay review upheld the touchdown, his seventh of the season. The team exchanged field goals, a 37-yarder for Arizona s Jake Smith and a career-long 53-yarder for Will Oliver. Then, Oliver split the uprights on a 48-yarder that gave the Buffaloes their first lead at with 5:17 left in the first half. The Richardsons had some spirited moments before Paul went out with a right ankle injury early in the fourth quarter. After an 11-yard catch in the opening drive, Paul Richardson jumped up and got in his cousin s face, and the official separated them. Denker amassed 457 yards of total offense (265 passing, 192 rushing), which is the sixth-highest single-game output in school history.» The Wildcats rushed for 405 yards on 50 carries. The last time UA rushed for 400 yards was against Colorado last season (Nov. 12, 2012).» Denker rushed for 192 yards on 15 carries. The yardage is believed to be a school record for a quarterback.» Ka Deem Carey scored four rushing touchdowns, one shy of his single-game school record of five set last year against Colorado (Nov. 12, 2012). 10 Rich Rodriguez enters his third season as head coach of the Arizona football program. He was introduced as Arizona s 30th head coach on Nov. 22, Rodriguez carries a career record of in 21 seasons, marked by Division I records of at West Virginia, at Michigan and with the Wildcats. He is the first coach in Arizona history to lead the program to bowl games in his first two seasons at the helm. In Rodriguez s second season, the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record with a bowl victory over the Boston College Eagles in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl in Shreveport, La. Arizona also knocked off a top-10 ranked team for the second-straight season with a win over No. 5 Oregon on Nov. 23. Running back Ka Deem Carey earned consensus All-America honors for the second-straight season, was named the 2013 Pac-12 offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist. He ended his three seasons in Tucson as Arizona s all-time career rushing leader (4,239 yards) and all-time all-purpose yardage leader (5,483). Senior B.J. Denker threw for 2,516 yards, completing 233 of 381 attempts with just seven interceptions, and connected on 16 scores to eight different receivers. Showing his versatility, Denker also rushed for 949 yards on 181 attempts with 13 scores. The 2012 season proved successful for Arizona in Rodriguez s spread-offense, no-huddle system. The Cats beat No. 10 USC, 39-36, on Oct. 27 en route to an 8-5 season and a win over Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Carey led the nation in total rushing yards (1,929) and yards per game (148.38) while rewriting the Arizona record book. For his efforts, Carey was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a consensus All-American, UA s first on the offensive side of the ball. Rodriguez inherited a fifth-year senior in quarterback Matt Scott who was perfectly suited to run the Wildcat offense. With Scott as signal caller, Arizona was 7-5 as he orchestrated come-frombehind wins against No. 10 USC and Nevada in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors, Scott led the conference in yards per game with and ranked No. 2 in the league in total yardage. Austin Hill totaled 81 catches for 1,364 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the Wildcat receivers in He was named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist, second-team All-Pac-12 and fourth-team All-America by Phil Steele. (AP) Anu Solomon threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start, and Arizona broke a 45-year-old school record with 787 total yards in a season-opening rout over Nevada-Las Vegas Friday night. Solomon shook off some early-game jitters with a series of big plays to break the school freshman record for passing yards, highlighted by a 92-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hill on the first play of the second half. Terris Jones-Grigsby laid the groundwork, running for 124 yards and a touchdown in Arizona s first game in three years without two-time All-American Ka Deem Carey. Freshman Nick Wilson added an 85-yard touchdown run to help the Wildcats break the school record of 691 total yards, set against New Mexico in UNLV failed to capitalize on a few early offensive opportunities and had no chance once Arizona got rolling for its second straight lopsided loss to the Wildcats. Blake Decker threw for 252 yards and a touchdown in his debut for the Rebels, who lost to Arizona by the same score last season in Las Vegas. Solomon spent his freshman season learning Arizona s system while redshirting behind B.J. Denker, then emerged from a four-way battle to start this season s opener. Coach Rich Rodriguez said Solomon wouldn t have to worry about looking over his shoulder if he makes a mistake, but added the other quarterbacks would likely play this season, if not Friday. Solomon, who s from Las Vegas, had a bit of trouble with his touch early, overthrowing a couple of long passes, including one to Samajie Grant that would have been a touchdown. He finally dialed one late in the first quarter, dropping in a pass behind coverage for a 39-yard touchdown to Nate Phillips. Solomon kept the big plays rolling after that, squeezing a ball in front of coverage to Grant, who turned it into a 63-yard touchdown pass. Solomon added a 13-yard scoring pass to Davonte Neal that put Arizona up 24-6 at halftime. Solomon opened the second half with the 92-yard catch-and-run TD to Hill and Jones-Grigsby was rewarded for his hard work with a 2-yard touchdown run that made it Solomon finished 25 of 44 and completed passes to 10 different players. Hill (110) and Grant (101) each went over 100 yards receiving. Like Solomon, Decker won a close quarterback battle, edging out junior Nick Sherry after transferring from Scottsdale Community College. Decker was able to gouge out a few big chunks in the first half, including a 52-yard pass to Devonte Boyd and a 49- yard run. The Rebels couldn t capitalize on the good field position, settling for a pair of field goals and a 43-yarder that Jonathan Leiva missed at the horn. Decker hit Anthony Williams on a 2-yard score early in the third quarter, but it was too late; Arizona was well on its way to another blowout. The freshman ran for 174 yards on 30 carries, and his go-ahead touchdown changed the momentum in Arizona s victory over Texas-San Antonio on Thursday night. Wilson gave Arizona a lead with a 2-yard run with 26 seconds left in the first half. Cayleb Jones had an 85-yard scoring reception for Arizona on the first play from scrimmage, and redshirt freshman Anu Solomon was 17 of 32 for 231 yards after throwing for 425 yards and four touchdowns against UNLV. UTSA coach Larry Coker, who started the school s program in 2011 after his national-title stint at Miami, thought Arizona s touchdown at the end of the half changed the game. Casey Skowron made four field goals, converting from 44 and 28 yards in the third quarter to make it The Roadrunners, coming off a 20-point victory in their opener at Houston, pulled within three on David Glasco II s 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter. Arizona intercepted two of Tucker Carter s passes in the final 1 1/2 minutes to seal the game, though the final pick off was nullified by a penalty. The Wildcats had 452 yards of offense after setting a school record with 787 yards against UNLV It looked as if it would be another blowout shortly after the opening kickoff. On the next play, Solomon flared a conservative sideline pass at Jones close to Arizona s 30. Jones eluded a tackle and scored on the 85-yarder 18 seconds into the game. Jones was back in his home state after sitting out last season following his transfer from Texas. In Austin, he received a two-year probated sentence for misdemeanor assault for punching a Longhorns tennis player in Jones caught four passes for 143 yards. He caught two passes in 10 games for Texas. Arizona scored on the next possession as well after holding UTSA to three plays and a punt. The Wildcats got inside the 20 before Solomon was sacked by defensive tackle Ferrington Macon, which brought out Skowron for a 38- yard field goal and a 10-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the game. UTSA responded by going 85 yards for a touchdowns, using 11 plays and 5 minutes off the clock just before the end of the first quarter. Carter, who ran twice during the drive for 28 yards, got the Roadrunners on the board with a 10-yard scoring completion to tight end David Morgan II. Carter finished with 228 yards and a TD on 22-of-33 passing. After giving up Skowron s 23-yard field goal, the Roadrunners took a lead on Kam Jones 18-yard run. It went to with 4:43 before halftime when the spread-offense deep snap was high to Solomon, who scooped up the loose ball in his own end zone and was chased out of the end zone for a safety. Arizona (3-0) came into the game with the nation s fifth-best offense and had another big night against the Wolfpack, rolling up 507 yards. Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and gave Arizona a 100-yard rusher for the 20th straight game, tied for longest in the FBS since Solomon finished 22-of-26 passing and threw two second-half touchdown passes to Cayleb Jones, who had nine catches for 116 yards. Cody Fajardo kept Nevada (2-1) in it, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wolfpack turned the ball over on downs their last drive. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said after the 2012 New Mexico Bowl that he hoped to never face Fajardo again. The Wolfpack quarterback lit up the Wildcats in that game, throwing for 256 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 140 and another score. Fajardo, on the other hand, was looking forward to facing Arizona again. Despite having what may have been the best game of his career in the bowl game, Nevada lost the game after the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final minute. Fajardo had some success against Arizona early as the Wolfpack picked their way down the field. Nevada held the ball for the game s opening 9:33 and had another scoring drive that lasted 6:08. The problem for the Wolfpack was how both ended: in field goals. Thirty-two plays, 141 yards and more than 15 minutes resulting in just six points -- a dangerous game against an explosive offense like Arizona s. The Wildcats needed just 1:50 to score their first touchdown, a 2-yard run by Wilson. The freshman scored the next one, too, bursting off left tackle for a 28-yard score. Solomon, who threw an ill-advised interception early in the second quarter, showed off his athletic ability just before halftime, rolling to the left and throwing off his back foot to hit Tyrell Johnson perfectly in stride for a 35-yard touchdown. Fajardo finally got the Wolfpack into the endzone after that, orchestrating a quick 75-yard drive capped by his 7-yard touchdown pass to Jarred Gipson that cut Arizona s halftime lead to The confidence of seeing six points go up on the board instead of three carried over into the third quarter, when Fajardo opened with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Hasaan Henderson. Arizona had an answer. Two, in fact. Solomon threw another touchdown on the run, this one going the other way, this one a 22-yarder to Jones. The Solomon-Jones connection worked again on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 24-yarder that put the Wildcats up Nevada and Fajardo still weren t done. He found Jarred Gipson on a 6-yard touchdown pass that cut Arizona s lead to and the Wolfpack got the ball back at their own 17-yard line with 3:04 left. Fajardo took Nevada to near midfield, but his fourth-down attempt was just out of Jericho Richardson s reach. Cal (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) threatened to turn Arizona s whiteout into a blowout, deflating the Wildcats and their white-shirt-wearing fans with two quick scores and a 22-point halftime lead. Arizona (4-0, 1-0) charged back behind Solomon, who threw for 520 yards and had four of his five touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats recovered an onside kick after Cal was called for a batting penalty and pulled within 2 after Solomon hit Cayleb Jones on a 15-yard scoring pass. Arizona got the ball back with less than a minute left and pulled off the miracle when Hill, a senior who missed last season with a torn ACL, brought the ball down between five Cal defenders. Solomon shook off a pair of first half interceptions to complete 47 of 73 passes, both school records. Jones caught 13 passes for 186 yards. Arizona finished with 627 total yards and Cal had 573. Behind Jared Goff, who threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns, Cal led heading into the fourth quarter. That s when Arizona kicked its high-octane offense in gear, marching for one score after another. (AP) -- The look on Marcus Mariota s face was unmistakable: He was stunned. Oregon s star quarterback lingered on the field late Thursday night following his team s loss to Arizona, shaking hands with the Wildcats after they upset the heavily favored Ducks for the second consecutive season. Later, he shouldered the blame for a loss that left No. 2 Oregon with a tough hill to climb if it wants an invite to college football s first postseason playoff. And he credited the unranked Wildcats, who were 24-point underdogs. Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost told reporters after the game that Mariota was not 100 percent after he was sacked seven times in the Ducks victory at Washington State in their previous game Sept. 20. True freshman Nick Wilson ran for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass from quarterback Anu Solomon to help the Wildcats (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) open the season with five straight victories for the first time since Terris Jones-Grigsby plowed into the end zone from a yard out for the tiebreaking touchdown with 2:54 left, and Arizona held on after sacking Mariota and recovering his fumble.. With his team trailing going into the final quarter, Oregon s Matt Wogan made a 21-yard field goal. Mariota then hit Keanon Lowe with a 9-yard scoring pass to tie it with 8:21 left. With Arizona driving downfield, the Ducks (4-1, 1-1) sacked Solomon on third-and-8, but Tony Washington was called for unsportsmanlike conduct to give the Wildcats a first down. A pass interference call got Arizona closer for Jones-Grigsby s go-ahead touchdown. And on Oregon s ensuing series, Mariota was sacked by Scooby Wright, who stripped the ball from the Heisman Trophy hopeful and recovered it himself. Arizona then gained a clinching first down on the ground and ran out the clock, silencing Autzen Stadium s 100th straight sellout crowd. Mariota, who hugged Rodriguez after the game, threw for 181 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback also caught a TD pass but was sacked three times and turned the ball over for the first time all season. Last November, the No. 5 Ducks lost to Arizona in Tucson, dashing any hopes Oregon had of winning a national championship. The blowout victory was Arizona s first over a top-five team since knocking off No. 2 Oregon in This time around, Solomon, a redshirt freshman, threw for 287 yards and a touchdown for Arizona. The Ducks appeared to still be struggling with their unstable offensive line, with Tyler Johnstone, Andre Yruretagoyena and Jake Fisher all out with injuries. True freshman Tyrell Crosby and former walk-on Matt Pierson started for the second game at tackle. Oregon got creative to start the second quarter with Mariota handing off to freshman running back Royce Freeman, who lobbed the ball back to Mariota for a 28-yard touchdown. After a review for what appeared to possibly be a fumble at the goal line, the TD stood to put the Ducks up 7-3. The Ducks weren t the only ones making unusual plays. Solomon threw a 21-yard pass to himself -- helped by a carom off Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner. The Wildcats made it to the red zone, but Jones-Grigsby fumbled and the Ducks recovered on their own 10. Arizona opened the second half with a six-play, 80-yard drive capped by Wilson s 3-yard touchdown run to go up Oregon answered with its own scoring drive -- helped along by a taunting call on Arizona that gave the Ducks a crucial first down -- that ended when Mariota hit Devon Allen with a 6-yard pass to make it Wilson added a 2-yard scoring run to give the Wildcats back the lead. Before the third quarter was over, he added a 28-yard TD catch from Solomon to give Arizona a advantage going into the final quarter. The Ducks were hurt when starting defensive end Arik Armstead left the game midway through the second quarter with what appeared to be a left foot injury. Armstead was slow to get up on a third-down play and later retreated to the locker room with team trainers. (AP) -- Southern California faced the prospect of a second straight stinging defeat, watching as another opponent moved into position for a gut-wrenching score. No Hail Mary this time, just a wide right -- and a big sigh of relief for the Trojans. Javorius Allen ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns, and USC escaped with a victory over No. 10 Arizona on Saturday night when Casey Skowron pushed a last-second 36-yard field goal wide right. USC (4-2, 3-1 Pac-12) left the Coliseum defeated and deflated a week ago after losing to Arizona State on a Hail Mary. The Trojans were headed toward another disheartening loss after Jared Baker scored on a 1-yard with 1:07 left and Caleb Jones recovered the onside kick following a failed 2-point conversion try. With the crowd roaring for another improbable victory by Arizona, the Wildcats came up short when Skowron missed his third field goal of the night with 17 seconds left. A seven-day emotional roller coaster over, the Trojans now find themselves atop the jumbled Pac-12 South. Arizona (5-1, 2-1) struggled with red zone issues in the first half and didn t have much of a run game with leading rusher Nick Wilson out and Terris Jones-Grigsby going down late in the first half. But, like they had so many times, the Wildcats came roaring back. Baker scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half, and Anu Solomon had another big night, throwing for 395 yards and a touchdown on 43-of-72 passing. The Wildcats put themselves in position to tie after Baker s 1-yard run, but he was stuffed by Williams on the 2-point try. They had a chance to win after Jones recovered the onside kick, but Skowron couldn t come through. No last-second jubilation this time, only disappointment for what could have been. It has been an emotional couple of weeks for Arizona as well. The Wildcats rallied to beat California on a Hail Mary on Sept. 20 and knocked off then-no. 2 Oregon on the road last week. The win over the Ducks vaulted the Wildcats from out of The Associated Press poll to No. 10 this week, the largest jump since the poll went to 25 teams in Arizona s task was to avoid a letdown against the Trojans, who rode into the desert with a different set of emotions after Arizona State s Hail Mary. Oddsmakers predicated a Wildcats hangover, installing them as 2 1/2-point underdogs despite their being undefeated and playing at home. The Trojans played like favorites from the start, moving the ball successfully against an Arizona defense that contained the Ducks a week ago, particularly when they gave the ball to Allen. The junior running back turned an inside handoff into a 34-yard touchdown run by bouncing it outside in the first quarter, then burst through a hole for a 48-yard score in the second. Gaining yards was not a problem for Arizona. Scoring touchdowns was. The Wildcats crossed USC s 20 four times in the first half and came away with six points. Skowron made two field goals, missed one and had another blocked. Arizona also lost a fumble late in the half, when Williams crushed Jones-Grigsby at the 7-yard line to pop the ball loose. USC led 14-6 at halftime in a game that was more defensive than anticipated. Once the second half started, so did the offensive fireworks. Cody Kessler found Nelson Agholor on a 21-yard touchdown pass, and Allen scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard run, putting the Trojans up Arizona finally found the end zone in the third quarter, when Baker scored on a 6-yard run, four plays after the Wildcats recovered Justin Davis fumble at USC s 22. Baker scored again early in the fourth quarter, turning a fourth-and-3 into a 41-yard touchdown reception out of the backfield that cut USC s lead to Just like in the California game, Arizona failed on a 2-point conversion but recovered an onside kick to get into position for a last-second win. This time, the Wildcats came up short -- or, wide right. The 5-0 start was the first for the school since 1998.» The Wildcats won the turnover battle (2-1), but lost the game. UA had been 11-0 in three seasons under Rich Rodriguez when winning the turnover battle.» Javorius Allen s 205 rushing yards for USC marked the first time an individual rank for 200 yards against UA since Oregon s LaMichael James ran for 288 yards on Sept. 24, 2011.» Jared Baker set a career high with three touchowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving). His 41- yard reception for a TD was a career-long, and he matched his personal best with 12 carries.» DaVonte Neal s 43-yard punt return was a career-long and the longest return play for UA this season.» UA last attempted a potential game-winning field goal in the final minute to win at ASU on Nov. 28, 2009 (32-yard kick by Alex Zendejas). Tell them... tell the team to bear down. John Byrd Button Salmon,
