3 2015 Arizona Snapshot (6-6, 3-6 Pac-12): The Wildcats entered the season riding high expectations following a 10-win season in 2014 that included a Fiesta Bowl appearance. Arizona opened the new season 3-0 in non-conference action despite accumulating injuries that would become a season-long storyline. The Wildcats lost All-American linebacker Scooby Wright to a knee injury in the opener, and he would play in only one more game (UCLA) the rest of the season as a separate foot injury sidelined the reigning national defensive player of the year. Wright was one of five major injuries at the linebacker position, where the Wildcats played as many as six different middle linebackers, including several current or former walkons. Elsewhere, the Wildcats lost starting quarterback Anu Solomon for two full games and he was forced from action in two others. Sophomore running back Nick Wilson was also slowed with injuries, missing two games and significant parts of the final half of the season. And, of course, the regular bumps, bruise and other injuries were suffered throughout the year at other spots, including receiver and offensive line. Compounding the injury madness, UA was forced to play 12-consecutive weeks due to a Pac-12 scheduling quirk that left Thanksgiving as the only bye week. Still, the Wildcats adopted a next-man-up philosophy and refused to make excuses. At its best, Arizona is a fast-paced, explosive offense that can score points in bunches, while leaning on an attacking defense that thrived when forcing turnovers. The kicking game is sound with seniors Casey Skowron (kicker) and Drew Riggleman (punter), and returners Nate Phillips and Tyrell Johnson have had some notable returns. There s no doubt Arizona is a scrappy squad that will give you a 60-minute battle regardless of score. Because of that, the Cats toppled a top-10 team (Utah) for the fourth straight season under Coach Rodriguez, and in the process became bowl eligible in mid-november. The Gildan New Mexico Bowl is an opportunity to cap a fourth-straight winning season, something not done since Some Game Themes: Regional rivals Arizona and New Mexico renew a historic series in the 10th Annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl Both of these programs have history in the game, with the Wildcats most recently winning a comeback thriller against Nevada in 2012 The Lobos make their first postseason appearance since 2007, while the Wildcats are bowling for the fourth-straight year Consider this a postseason return game from Arizona s bowl victory over the Lobos in 1997 that was played on UA s campus The schematic matchup is quite intriguing for football purists: on one side, Bob Davie s club runs a triple option attack reminiscent of offensive play from decades past. His counterpart, Rich Rodriguez, is credited as being the innovator of the spread read-option that has become widely used within the last decade Regardless, blocking, tackling and protecting the football remain paramount, and each squad will be prepared and well-rested by the time game day arrives That thought seems foreign to Arizona, which played 12-consecutive weeks without a bye but has not played since Nov. 21. Indeed, 27 days of rest should provide an opportunity for two key cogs to return to the lineup: quarterback Anu Solomon and linebacker Scooby Wright Against the Lobos, UA needs the passing threat of Solomon on offense and the tenacity of Wright on defense When the offenses are clicking, both are big-play threats, so defensive staffs will have their hands full working to corral the playmakers A key aspect to focus on will be red zone success. The Cats have settled for more field goals than desired down the stretch, while the Lobos are one of the stingiest teams in the country for allowing red zone touchdowns A win for Arizona would mean a fourth-straight winning season for a 20-man senior class, some of whom played roles in the New Mexico Bowl heroics a few seasons ago Undoubtedly, capping a season with a bowl victory leaves a good feeling that carries over into spring practices and summer workouts. The winner also gets to see its victorious score scroll across tickers throughout the remainder of the bowl season Indeed, it s the most wonderful time of the year. Happy holidays and enjoy the football! Cats Are Bowling, Again: Arizona will make its fourth-straight bowl appearance under head coach Rich Rodriguez, who took over the program in Rodriguez guided UA to New Mexico Bowl (2012) and AdvoCare V100 Bowl victories, while losing for the first time in last year s Fiesta Bowl The Wildcats are appearing in their 20th bowl game, which includes bowls in seven of the last eight seasons Arizona enters this year s Gildan New Mexico Bowl with an record in its 19 previous appearances The Wildcats are 1-0 in the New Mexico Bowl, having previously defeated Nevada (49-48) in 2012 The Wildcats have won five of their last eight bowls dating to 1997 when a victory over New Mexico started the successful run in the Insight.com Bowl Arizona is 2-1 against current Mountain West Conference teams, with wins over Nevada (2012 New Mexico Bowl) and New Mexico (1997 Insight.com bowl), and a loss to Boise State last December. Leaders of the Pac: This season s Gildan New Mexico bowl appearance will mark Arizona s seventh bowl game in the last eight seasons. That s an unpresented stretch for a program that has 20 all-time postseason appearances. It s an even more impressive streak when you consider this: since 2008, only two other Pac-12 schools have appeared in at least seven bowls. Oregon has made eight bowl trips in those eight years, while Stanford has gone bowling seven times. USC has been bowl eligible each year, but was unable to participate for two seasons due to NCAA sanctions. Arizona in the NCAA Rankings Category Rk. The trophy is now in Arizona s Jim Click Hall of Champions in McKale Memorial Center after its retirement prior to the Insight.com Bowl game, pitting the two teams in December Officials at both schools joined in deeming the emblematic spirit of the rival (which began in 1908), more important than a weapon of the sort used in the Southwest against Native Americans. Arizona won the rifle 21 times and New Mexico 10 times in the years since the gun was offered as a game prize in A Quick History Lesson: Ever wonder what Bear Down, Arizona means? In 1926, Arizona quarterback and student body president John Button Salmon was critically injured in an automobile accident. Then coach J.F. Pop McKale visited Salmon in the days after the accident. When asked by McKale for some final words to pass along to the team, Salmon said Tell them tell the team to Bear Down. Salmon tragically passed away, but McKale relayed the message. It s unknown whether the message was delivered before the New Mexico State or New Mexico games in the coming weeks, but either way, the Wildcats won both, including a 21-0 victory over New Mexico. The Bear Down rally cry became the school motto thereafter, and supersedes the famous win on the Gipper delivered at Notre Dame n Another History Lesson: In the second-ever meeting, New Mexico visited Arizona in Albuquerque Journal staff writer Rick Wright wrote in December 2005: UNM took a 2-2 record into its first-ever game at Arizona on Nov. 25. At stake was a silver cup, to be presented the winning team by former United States presidential candidate and future secretary of state William Jennings Bryan. Interest in Tucson, the Albuquerque Morning Journal reported, was at fever heat. The host Wildcats, 10-6 victors over UNM in Albuquerque the previous year, struck first that Saturday and led the fumble-prone University Boys 5-0 at halftime. In the second half, New Mexico quarterback Gilette Cornish tied the score with a touchdown run. After Arizona went back in front, Herbert Galles Sr. s touchdown and Cornish s extra point tied it at 11. From that point on, it was all New Mexico. Two more Cornish touchdowns and points-after gave the University Boys a resounding victory and that silver cup. Arizona vs. New Mexico: The Wildcats are all-time against Lobos, who have won the last two meetings (home-and-home series in ). Arizona is vs. UNM when playing in Albuquerque, while it is 5-3 in its last eight contests at New Mexico. Each of the last three contests between the two sides have been decided by just a single possession. Outta This League: Now in his fourth season at Arizona, Rich Rodriguez is 14-1 against non-conference opponents, including 3-0 in The only loss came to Boise State, 38-30, in last year s VIZIO Fiesta Bowl. Otherwise, Rodriguez is 5-0 in matchups against Mountain West foes, including 3-0 against Nevada (including a 2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl victory) and 2-0 vs. UNLV. Against the Mountain West: Arizona will be playing its second school from the Mountain West this season, as the Wildcats defeated Nevada up in Reno earlier this year. UA is all-time against MW schools, while it has won five of the last six contests vs. then affiliated MW schools and four of its last five against current MW competition. This will mark the second straight season the Wildcats have taken on a Mountain West opponent in a bowl game, while UA is 2-1 all-time against MW schools in bowl games Fiesta Bowl vs. Boise State (L, 38-30), 2012 New Mexico Bowl vs. Nevada (W, 49-48), and 2008 Las Vegas Bowl vs. BYU (W, 31-21). BYU is now independent, making Arizona 1-1 against current MW members. Arizona earned a victory over New Mexico then a member of the WAC in the 1997 Insight.com Bowl (Dec. 27), two years before the Mountain West Conference was formed. New Mexico is one of six schools remaining from the original Mountain West Conference. On the Offensive: At the conclusion of the regular season, Arizona s offense remains one of the most potent in the nation. Here are some notable ranks among FBS teams and where it ranks in the Pac-12. Category Stat Pac-12 NCAA Scoring rd 20th Total Offense rd 15th Rushing Offense nd 18th Total First Downs 301 4th 20th What s At Stake: A win on Dec. 19 will give the Wildcats their fourth-consecutive winning season, something not done since In the Pac-10/12 era, Arizona posted four straight winnings seasons just one other time, that coming over a six-year stretch from under coach Larry Smith Arizona Football Gildan New Mexico Bowl Guide

5 Four in a Row: For the first time in program history, Arizona is participating in a bowl game in a fourth consecutive season. That s quite an accomplishment for fourth-year head coach Rich Rodriguez, who is now second in school history for most bowl appearances (Dick Tomey, 7). The Wildcats are 2-1 in their previous three bowls under Rodriguez. Here s a look at the other UA coaches that have led the program to at least one bowl: Dick Tomey 7; Mike Stoops 3; Larry Smith 2; Tony Mason 1; Darrell Mudra 1; Miles Casteel 1; J.F. McKale 1 Offensive Numbers of Note: Arizona has a chance to post single-season top-10 averages in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and scoring offense Entering the bowl game, the Wildcats are averaging rushing yards per game, which is just outside the No. 10 spot (227.8 in 2012) Arizona s passing yards per game stand No. 6 on the single-season charts and that figure ranking is likely to remain The yards of total offense also figures to finish second-highest in program history behind the clip set in 2012 The Wildcats are scoring 36.8 points per game, which if it stands is No. 3 in program history narrowly ahead of the 36.6 average turned in during the 2008 campaign New Mexico Bowl Review: Arizona capped Rich Rodriguez s first season in thrilling fashion behind a furious late rally to win the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, 49-48, in Albuquerque on Dec. 15, Arizona dug itself a 21-0 hole early, rallied to the tie the game and yet still found itself down by 17 in the fourth quarter. Even bleaker, only 1:48 remained when Nevada kicked a field goal and gave the Wildcats the ball back, down 13. Matt Scott led a 7-play, 75-yard drive that ate up only 1:02 of clock to get UA within a score. A successful onside kick recovery set up a quick 3-play, 51-yard drive which required just 21 seconds as the Wildcats tied the game. The ensuing extra point gave Arizona its only lead of the game, and Marquis Flowers interception sealed the win in the waning seconds to give the Wildcats their first bowl victory since Scott finished a remarkable season and career with 382 yards passing and three fourth quarter touchdowns. Running back Ka Deem Carey rushed for 172 yards and three-first half touchdowns to win the nation s rushing title, an exclamation point on a consensus All-American season. Nevada signal caller Cody Fajardo was sensational keeping the UA defense off balance as he passed for 256 yards and ran for 140. In fact, the Wolf Pack tallied 659 yards of offense to Arizona s 578, but in the end it was a resilient, refuse-to-lose Wildcat squad that had the fire power to polish off an eightwin campaign. Novembers to Remember: Arizona Stadium has become the scene of some notable upsets in November, and last Nov. 14th s double-overtime win over then-ranked No. 10 Utah was no exception. The victory gave the Wildcats a win over a ranked team for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons, with a handful of those games being memorable home victories late in the season. Since 2004, Arizona is 7-3 when hosting an AP Top 25 team in November at Arizona Stadium. The seven wins have come against No. 10 Utah (2015), No. 13 Arizona State (2014), No. 5 Oregon (2013), No. 2 Oregon (2007), No. 8 California (2006), No. 7 UCLA (2005) and No. 18 Arizona State (2004). The three losses have been decided by 10 total points to No. 16 UCLA (2013), No. 11 Oregon (2009) and No. 22 Oregon State (2008). Feel the Rush: The first 12 weeks of the season have seen the Wildcats lean quite heavily on an explosive rushing attack that is 20th in the nation with 2,712 yards. They have netted over 100 yards in 11 of 12 contests this season and in 17 of 18 games going back to last year. More impressive, Arizona has run for at least 100 yards in 48 of 52 games under Rich Rodriguez. Here are some of the notable rushing notes for this year s rushing attack:\ UA ranks No. 11 in FBS with 5.49 yards per carry UA ranks tied for No. 28 in FBS with 27 rushing TD UA ranks 18th in FBS with 226 rushing yards per game UA ranks tied for No. 27 in FBS with 132 first downs by rushing UA ranks tied for No. 17 in FBS with 86 rush plays of 10+ yards UA ranks tied for No. 6 in FBS with 16 rushing plays of 30+ yards Fresh Faces: As we turn the calendar to December, 42 Wildcats have started a game this season, including 25 on the defensive side of the ball. That s a remarkable number necessitated by a rash of injuries at the linebacker and defensive back positions throughout the season. Of the 42 that have started on either side, 18 have been firsttime starters, a figure that good for third-most in the Pac-12. The Wildcats have boasted a 100-plus yard rusher 45 times under head coach Rich Rodriguez. UA has sported eight 100-yard rushers through 12 games so far this season, while Arizona has recorded a 100-yard rusher in 10 of the last 16 regular season games going back to last year. In fact, the Wildcats are 26-2 in games they lead at the break, while posting a 4-17 mark when they trail. The Wildcats are 2-1 when tied, losing for the first time Nov. 7 to USC. Turnovers Turn into Wins: Arizona has struggled to create turnovers throughout the Pac-12 season, but it s come up with four over the final two games of the regular season (two each vs. Utah and at Arizona State). When forcing multiple turnovers, the Wildcats are 21-4 under Rich Rodriguez. Solomon s Stats: Here are some numbers of note on sophomore quarterback Anu Solomon His 352 passing yards on Nov. 7 at USC were a season high as he topped 300 yards for the first time this year. As a redshirt freshman, Solomon tossed for 300-plus yards on four occasions, including a school single-game record 520 against California on Sept. 20, 2014 From the final game of the 2014 season through the Oct. 31 game at Washington, Solomon set a new school record with 232 consecutive pass attempts without an interception. The previous record was held by Nick Foles, who went 208 attempts without a pick during the seasons Despite throwing four interceptions in the last three contests, Solomon has thrown only 13 picks over 846 career pass attempts. That averages out to an interception on only 1.5 percent of his total attempts. By comparison, the career school record is held by Nick Foles at 2.36 percent (33 interceptions on 1,396 career attempts) Solomon s 18 touchdown passes this season gives him 46 in his brief two-year career, moving him into a tie for third all-time at Arizona (Tom Tunnicliffe, ) Solomon also ranks fourth on Arizona s all-time passing list with 6,053 career yards. 4x100 and 4x1,000: Arizona s offense features a quartet of receivers that have produced some staggering numbers, as David Richards, Samajie Grant, Nate Phillips, and Cayleb Jones have all eclipsed the 1000-yard receiving mark for their careers, while three of the four have 10 receiving touchdowns or more. Grant is just one away from 10 touchdowns, as he has nine for his career. When added up, the four veterans have 481 receptions for 5,803 yards and 45 touchdowns. Receiver Receptions Yards TD Grant 122 1,377 9 Jones 124 1, Phillips 127 1, Richards 108 1, Totals 481 5, Skowron on Point: Senior place-kicker Casey Skowron leads the Wildcats with 104 points scored this season, following up on a 123-point campaign a year ago that was the most-ever for a UA kicker. The former walk-on has now racked up 227 career points, which ranks No. 7 in program history. He currently stands No. 5 among the school s place-kickers, behind Max Zendejas (360, ), Steve McLaughlin (283, ), Gary Coston (262, ), and Lee Pistor (246, ). This season, Skowron is 17- for-20 on field goals, improving his career total to 37-for-48 (77.1 percent). His career long is 49 yards and his season-long is 48 yards. No Riggle Room: Senior punter Drew Riggleman, who was one of 79 nominees for the 2015 Ray Guy Award, has emerged as one of the nation s best punters for a second straight season, as he s kicked the ball 49 times for 2,197 yards going 44.8 yards on average. The Tucson, Ariz. native has recorded only six touchbacks, 11 punts of 50-plus yards, while 19 have landed inside the 20-yard line. His longest punt of the season checks in at 66 yards, which is just four yards shy of his career high of 70 yards set last year at UCLA. Riggleman s average yards per punt (44.8) ranks 11th nationally, while the mark is second best in the Pac-12. Riggleman has been named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team in back-to-back seasons now. Shake And Bake(r): Senior running Jared Baker, who has seen his role significantly increased with Nick Wilson sidelined much of the season, has put together his best season at Arizona. Baker has rushed for 691 yards and six touchdowns on 119 carries this year, averaging out to a steady 5.81 yards per attempt. This season s effort have improved his career totals to 1,003 yards and nine touchdowns. Gilbert Gets It: Senior defensive end Reggie Gilbert has turned in his best season over a consistently five-year career. Granted a fifth season for missing a number of games due to injury early in his career, Gilbert has racked up a team-high 46 starts, including all 12 this season. The Laveen, Ariz., native has totaled 138 tackles, including 26.0 for loss and 14 sacks, in his career, which includes 36 tackles and 7.5 for loss despite facing more double teams than in previous seasons. His durability and reliability to stick to his assignments can easily get overlooked, but coaches have noticed throughout his career Arizona Football Gildan New Mexico Bowl Guide

7 Cayleb Tops 1,500 Yards: Junior receiver Cayleb Jones leads the Wildcats in both receptions (51) and receiving yards (722) this season. Those 12-game totals has pushed his career tallies to 124 catches for 1,741 yards along with 13 touchdowns. The yardage total is now 12th-best in school history, trailing Brad Anderson 1,789 ( ) for the No. 11 position (needs 48 yards). Meanwhile, Jones needs four more receptions to catch David Roberts, who stands at No. 10 in program history with 128 ( ). Jones 13 touchdown grabs are good for 12th-most all-time, while he s just two touchdown catches away from equaling Derek Hill (15, ) for 11th on the all-time list. Willy From Philly: Senior Will Parks remains one of the leaders of a Wildcat defense that has battled injuries as much as frustration throughout the season. The Philadelphia, Pa., native is leading the club with 72 tackles in 12 starts this season. A 30-game starter in 52 contests to date, Parks has racked up 193 career tackles, including 20.0 for loss, while hauling in four interceptions, defending 24 total passes, forcing two fumbles and recovering one. Three-Headed Rushing Attack: Arizona sports three 600-yard rushers in the same season for the first time in school history. Sophomore running back Nick Wilson leads the squad with 725 yards despite missing games this season due to a foot injury. Senior quarterback Jerrard Randall is second with 702 rushing yards despite playing in just 11 games. Then it s senior running back Jared Baker who ranks third with 691 rushing yards, despite playing only 11 of 12 games this season with just one start. The last time UA had three players net 500 rushing yards in a season was 1991, when Billy Johnson (682), Ontiwaun Carter (606) and Chuck Levy (505) accomplished the feat. Baker is just nine yards short of 700, which would give Arizona its first 700-yard trio in program history. Scoring in Perspective: In 12 games, the Wildcats have scored 441 points, which is tied for 21st-most among FBS teams. It gives this year s squad a 36.8, which will end up just short of the school record. The 1954 club posted 38.5 points per game, which is currently the top mark in school history. Rich Rodriguez s first UA team challenged the mark, scoring 38.2 per game in Charting Mr. Wilson: Nick Wilson s 24 career ground scores are good for seventh on UA s all-time career rushing TD list. He needs just one rushing touchdown for 25, which would match Trung Canidate ( ) for sixth on the all-time list. Wilson currently has 2,100 rushing yards for his career. He s now ranked No. 12 on UA s all-time career rushing list. A Good First Impression: Jerrard Randall and Anu Solomon have each been sharing significant time at the quarterback position as of late, while Randall has only made one start thus far, he s made an immediate impact whenever he s been inserted into the offense. Randall s first play from scrimmage has gone for 39 yards or more three times this season (72 yard run vs NAU, 39 yard run vs. UCLA, 59 yard run vs. Washington State). Additionally, Randall has helped lead the Wildcats in game-winning drives in the fourth quarter at Colorado and against Utah. A Play for the Ages: Brandon Dawkins 95-yard touchdown pass to Trey Griffey in the third quarter on Nov. 21 at Arizona State goes down as the second-longest passing play in Arizona history. Jason Johnson s 99-yard pass to Brandon Marshall against Idaho on Sept. 8, 2001 is the only pass play longer. The reception went down as the third longest overall offensive play in school history. Trung Canidate s 96- yard run against San Diego State on Oct. 4, 1997 along with the Johnson/Brandon connection are only the only plays longer. Randall Racing Toward UA Records: In only 11 games played, Jerrard Randall has racked up 702 yards and five touchdowns on only 78 carries. He s the latest quarterback under Rich Rodriguez to pose a threat in the ground game. Two years ago, B.J. Denker established a new school records for rushing yards (949) and rushing touchdowns (13) by a quarterback. The year prior, in 2012, Matt Scott tallied 506 yards and six rushing scores, which was good enough for No. 5 in the modern day era for quarterback rushing. Now Randall is second in single-season rushing by quarterbacks with fewer than half the attempts of any other player on the list. Here s a look: Quarterback Year Att-Yards, TD B.J. In 12 games, Arizona has started five players at middle linebacker: Scooby Wright, Haden Gregory, Tre Tyler, Sir Thomas Jackson, and Jake Matthews (UA utilized a modified scheme vs. WSU without a true MLB). At corner, five players have started: DaVonte Neal, Sammy Morrison, Cam Denson, Jarvis McCall and Jace Whittaker. Quick Strikes: Arizona s up-tempo offense has churned out some explosive touchdown drives that you might have missed if you took a restroom break. Of the 53 touchdown drives for the UA offense, 28 have lasted two minutes or less. It s not always big plays that set up the quick strikes, though. Earlier this year against NAU, the Wildcats efficiently moved the ball 61 yards in 11 plays for a two-minute drill touchdown that consumed only 1:39 on the clock. Not to be Offensive: Now in Rich Rodriguez s fourth season at Arizona, the Wildcats have scored 17 non-offensive touchdowns, including six last season and three so far this year. The defense has accounted for 13 of the touchdowns, including four in the final five regular season contests a year ago. When Arizona s defense scores a touchdown, the Cats are 9-1 under Rodriguez. Adding in three additional games with kick/ punt return touchdowns, and Arizona is 11-2 when scoring a non-offensive touchdown. Pay Special Attention: Coverage in the kicking game is often an overlooked skill, but the Wildcats have several excelling on the punt and kickoff teams. The return of Trey Griffey last month was not only a welcomed addition to the receiving corps, but the junior already has collected eight tackles as a key contributor on specials teams. Jonathan Haden has also emerged the last few weeks, totaling six tackles in punt/kickoff coverage. He s easy to confuse with starting free safety Jamar Allah, so note that it s the No. 7 from the offensive side of the ball you see on special teams, whether he s returning a kick or tackling an opposing returner. RR Did it Again: In its entire football history, Arizona has produced 600 or more yards of total offense on 13 occasions. However, it s become a much more frequent occurrence since Rich Rodriguez arrived for the start of the 2012 season. Since then, the Wildcats have topped the 600-yard barrier nine times, including a school-record 792 yards on Sept. 19 against NAU. The effort topped the previous program high (787 yards) which was turned in by Rodriguez s squad in the 2014 season opener against UNLV. Arizona has actually eclipsed the 600-yard mark in total offense in three games this season. Pac-12 All-Conference Honorees: Punter Drew Riggleman was named to the Pac-12 Football All-Conference Second Team, as voted on by the league s head coaches and announced in early December. Riggleman was joined by kicker Casey Skowron along with defenders Will Parks and Reggie Gilbert as honorable mention selections. Riggleman, also a second-team honoree last season, turned in a strong senior campaign finishing the regular season second in the conference with a 44.8-yard punting average, which would rank fourth-best in school single-season history if it holds up. Skowron, who handled kickoffs and place kicks, turned in a stellar senior season as he drilled 17-of-20 field goal attempts while making 53-of-55 extra point tries this season. Parks, a 12-game starter at safety, finished the regular season with a team-high 72 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, along with seven pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Gilbert, also a 12-game starter at defensive end, collected 36 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and 3/5 sacks, while forcing one fumble. Pac-12 All-Academic: The University of Arizona football program placed eight student-athletes on the Pac-12 All-Academic teams. Headlining the selections for the Wildcats was sophomore defensive back Carter Hehr, who was a first team honoree. Senior running back Jared Baker and junior linebacker Jake Matthews garnered second team recognition, while Cam Denson, Tony Ellison, Alex King, Abraham Mendivil and Casey Skowron collected honorable mention accolades. The Spring Calendar: The University of Arizona will begin its spring semester on Wednesday, Jan. 13 National Signing Day is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 3 The weekend after signing day, the Wildcats will begin spring practices a month earlier than previous seasons The Spring Football Game is scheduled for Friday, March 4, at Arizona Stadium The spring semester draws to a close on May 4 with commencement slated for May 13 Arizona will open its 2016 season against BYU in a neutral site game in Glendale, Ariz., to be played Saturday, Sept. 3. The Lobos got an emotional lift when Clint McPeek forced a fumble by Arizona s Nic Grigsby on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, and Quin returned it 29 yards to the Arizona 10. Ferguson ran to the end zone on the next snap, stretching to move the ball across the goal line. The TD was upheld after a replay review, and the Lobos led after just two second-half plays from scrimmage. Arizona Notebook» Arizona has now lost two straight to New Mexico» Both Mike Thomas and Delashaun Dean eclipised the 100-plus yard receiving mark. New Mexico s defense set the tone midway through the first quarter, forcing their first turnover when lineman Brett Kennedy caught Tuitama s screen pass and returned it 22 yards to set up Aho s first field goal, a 24-yard effort. Grigsby s 4-yard TD run in the third quarter pulled Arizona to but Aho, who kicked a 43-yard field goal in the second period, was good from 48 and 42 yards as the Lobos made it early in the fourth. His fourth field goal came after New Mexico s Ian Clark sacked Tuitama, forcing another fumble, and Kendall Briscoe recovered. Arizona scored 111 points in wins over Idaho and Toledo in Tucson, but New Mexico s defense offered a tougher test. The Lobos, who struggled early in homefield losses to TCU and Texas A&M, ended a skid of 11 straight losses when their opponent scores first. The Wildcats led 7-0 when Tuitama connected with Thomas on a 43-yard scoring pass. New Mexico rallied to lead at halftime, aided by a first-quarter trick play where Ferguson tossed a 25-yard TD pass to Porterie. Aho kicked field goals of 24 and 43 yards and Ferguson broke a 25-yard run just before the break Arizona Football Gildan New Mexico Bowl Guide

(AP) -- Anu Solomon threw four touchdown passes to help No. 22 Arizona beat UTSA Thursday night. Arizona sputtered on offense most of the night and allowed UTSA, a team returning two offensive starters, to rack up 525 total yards. Those areas can be fixed. Losing Wright could hurt a lot worse. The junior, who swept the major defensive player of the year awards last season, went down in the first quarter and spent the second half in street clothes, walking with a cane. Arizona scored two defensive touchdowns, but had numerous breakdowns, even before Wright went down. UTSA s Blake Bogenschutz had 332 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-43 passing after throwing an interception for a touchdown on the game s first pass. Solomon threw for 229 yards on 22-of-26 passing, and Nick Wilson ran for 97 yards. The Roadrunners have given Arizona a bit of trouble over the past couple of seasons, playing two close games. This year, the Wildcats have most of their skill players back on offense and UTSA returned six starters overall, fewest in the FBS. No surprise then that the Roadrunners got off to a shaky start. Bogenschutz had his first pass intercepted by Anthony Lopez and returned for 23 yards for a touchdown. UTSA s Brett Winnegan took the ensuing kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown, but that was called back for a block in the back. The Roadrunners also had a 17-play drive lead to no points when Danny Portillo missed a 33-yard field goal and were behind 14-0 after Solomon hit David Richards on a 6-yard touchdown pass. Yet they kept churning out yards, particularly after Wright went out. He went down in the first quarter, tried to return the next series, but lasted one play before heading to the bench to wrap ice around his knee. Bogenschutz set up Portillo for a 19-yard field goal, then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to David Morgan II. Even after Solomon ducked and dodged his way through UTSA s defense to set up a 21-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Jackson, the Roadrunners still fought back. Portillo hit a 33-yard field goal and Bogenschutz followed with a 2-yard touchdown run just before halftime, pulling UTSA to UTSA had a advantage in total yards in the first half. The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the second half, going up after Solomon hit Nate Phillips on a 4-yard touchdown pass and Jamar Allah scooped up Aaron Grubb s fumble for a 22-yard touchdown return. Wilson surpassed the 100-yard mark when he scored his second touchdown to make it with 3:56 to go in the half. Solomon, who played at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High, completed 24 of 33 attempts with no interceptions. He was replaced early in the fourth quarter by backup Jerrad Randall, who ran 57 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach, Don Jackson rushed for 91 yards for Nevada (1-1). Wolf Pack quarterback Tyler Stewart completed 18-of-32 pass attempts for 159 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Nevada was whistled for nine penalties for 105 yards, including two unsportsmanlike calls against thirdyear coach Brian Polian. Arizona, which had 570 yards total offense, had three penalties for 30 yards The closest Nevada got was when Stewart capped an 80-yard drive with a 5-yard TD pass to Jerico Richardson 9:14 before the half. He threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Hasaan Henderson with 10:08 remaining when the game already had been decided. Arizona jumped to a 7-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game on Solomon s 9-yard TD pass to Johnny Jackson two plays after Nevada punter Alex Boy had to chase down a high snap inside his own 10 and kicked it out of bounds at the 16 for a loss of 13. Solomon completed six consecutive passes to lead Arizona on a 77-yard scoring drive capped by Wilson s 3-yard TD run to make it 14-0 at 9:33 in the first quarter. Brent Zuzo s 28-yard field goal pulled Nevada to within 14-3 by the end of a quarter when the Wolf Pack already had been called for five penalties for 56 yards. The Wildcats were driving again late in the second quarter before Wilson fumbled at midfield and linebacker Bryan Lane Jr. recovered, allowing Zuzo to kick a 41-yard field goal as time ran out to make it at the half. On the opening drive of the second half, Solomon s apparent score on a quarterback sneak was overturned on review, but he lobbed a 1-yard TD to Jamarde Cobb on the next play to make it 27-13, and Casey Skowron missed the extra point. Arizona s Cayleb Jones caught six passes for 103 yards. Wilson averaged 9.2 yards per carry in 21 attempts and had two catches for 30 yards. Sophomore Nick Wilson churned out 136 yards on 24 carries and quarterback Jerrard Randall added 128 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, but it wasn t enough to overcome a strong offensive performance by the Bruins. Led by freshman quarterback Josh Rosen, UCLA posted 497 yards of total offense and built a lead by halftime. The Wildcats (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) committed three first-half turnovers and the Bruins scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive each time. There were some unforced errors, certainly, Coach Rich Rodriguez said after the game. You have to give them credit for the way they played. But you could see at times we were pressing a little too much, instead of just playing and not worrying about scenarios. On Arizona s first drive of the game, that didn t seem like an issue. Anu Solomon orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Solomon to junior Nate Phillips to give Arizona an early 7-0 lead. But Rosen and the Bruins responded right away. The freshman quarterback found Thomas Duarte for a 35-yard touchdown to tie the game up. On Arizona s next drive, Solomon couldn t corral a snap that sailed over his head and UCLA recovered at the Wildcats 16-yard line. One play later, Bruins running back Paul Perkins scored on a 16-yard touchdown to give UCLA (4-0, 1-0) its first lead of the game. The Bruins never gave it back. Rosen and the Bruins worked it down to the 5-yard line before the quarterback hit Jordan Payton for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead. Following the Rosen to Payton touchdown, Arizona worked the ball into UCLA territory on a 12-yard run by Solomon. But on the play, the quarterback took a hit above the shoulders and exited. At halftime, Rodriguez told ABC Sports that Solomon likely wouldn t return. Randall entered for Solomon and scored on a 39-yard rush on his first play from scrimmage. He showed off his speed that helped him gain 149 yards on just three carries last week against Northern Arizona. Randall s touchdown dash infused some energy into the 56,004 fans at Arizona Stadium, but it didn t seemto bother Rosen. Randall, a senior from Hollywood, Florida, was 15 for 28 for 178 yards and one touchdown to senior Johnny Jackson. He added 67 rushing yards on nine carries. The quarterback started in place of sophomore Anu Solomon, who missed the game with a concussion. We have to evaulate everything, Coach Rich Rodriguez said. We have to be better. We have to control what we can control and that s playing better football. Nick Wilson added his sixth rushing touchdown of the season and 22nd of his career, which is the seventh-most in Arizona history. Senior free safety Jamar Allah led the team with 11 tackles. Stanford (4-1, 3-0 Pac-12) won its fourth straight game, using a strong effort from senior quarterback Kevin Hogan. Hogan completed 17 of 19 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He was aided in the backfield by running back Christian McCaffrey, who had 156 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Arizona, playing without several key defensive players, including All-American linebacker Scooby Wright and starter Derrick Turituri, had trouble stopping Hogan and the Cardinal early in the game. Stanford went 43 yards on nine plays on the opening drive of the game and got a 38-yard field goal from Conrad Ukropina to open the scoring. After an Arizona punt, Stanford went right back to work, driving 65 yards on seven plays. Again, the Wildcats (3-2, 0-2) were able to hold the Cardinal to a field goal, and Ukropina knocked in one from 41 yards out. The Wildcats went three-and-out on their second offensive series, giving the ball back to Hogan and Stanford. This time, the Cardinal didn t settle for a field goal. Hogan drove the team 63 yards on seven plays and McCaffrey finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown to make it The drive seemed to wake up Arizona s offense and Randall started to get comfortable in his first start. He directed a 20-play drive that went 73 yards and spanned 7 minutes and 34 seconds. But the Wildcats had to settle for a 26-yard field goal after not being able to convert a third down. Stanford kept rolling offensively and added two more touchdowns before halftime. Senior Remound Wright scored on a 1-yard run with 3:45 left in the half and then caught a 16-yard pass from Hogan with 1:19 left to make it 27-3 at halftime. Randall hooked up with Jackson on a 15-yard score early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 17, but the Wildcats never got any closer. Wright again scored from one yard out and Hogan threw his second touchdown pass to senior Michael Rector to make the score All total, Stanford scored points on eight straight possessions, including six straight touchdowns after the two early field goals. The Cardinal s first punt didn t come until the 11:44 mark of the fourth quarter. The Wildcats also gave freshman quarterback Brandon Dawkins a look in the loss with Solomon sidelined. Dawkins was 2 for 5 for 17 yards. Jackson led the Wildcats with five catches for 84 yards and the touchdown. Samajie Grant had three grabs for 35 yards. (AP) - Anu Solomon returned from a one-game absence and re-ignited the Arizona offense in the Wildcats 44-7 rout of Oregon State on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore and second-year starter, who sat out last week s loss at Stanford because of a concussion, completed 17 of 30 passes for 276 yards, before sitting out the fourth quarter. The Wildcats (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) amassed 645 yards to 249 for the Beavers (2-3, 0-2). Arizona rushed for 368 yards. Jared Baker led the way with 123, 70 on one play. Orlando Bradford gained 83 yards and scored three touchdowns. Nick Wilson, the Pac-12 s leading rusher entering the weekend, ran for 78 and scored twice. Beavers freshman Seth Collins was 8 for 24 for 56 yards with one interception, ran for 56 yards and scored the Oregon State touchdown. Collins and his top receiver Jordan Villamin left the game with injuries in the first half, Collins limping into the locker room before the second quarter ended. But both of them returned to start the second half. The Wildcats took the opening kickoff and needed just 2:06 to go 75 yards in nine plays, the big one a 50-yard pass from Solomon to wide open David Richards. Wilson capped the drive with a three-yard run. Arizona s next two drives stalled, and the Wildcats settled for a pair of field goals by Casey Skowron. Oregon State was down only 13-7 after Collins burst up the middle 17 yards for a touchdown with 10:59 left in the first half, and it looked like the Beavers might make it competitive in their bid to give first-year coach Gary Andersen his first Pac-12 win. But the Wildcats, the defending Pac-12 South champions who were outscored in losses to UCLA and Stanford, scored the next 31 points. The first 14 of them came on three plays from scrimmage. After Oregon State s kickoff, Baker ran through a big opening up the middle for 70 yards, setting up Wilson s 7-yard touchdown run. On the Beavers next possession, defensive lineman Anthony Fotu tipped Collins pass into the air, then gathered the ball in and rumbled six yards to the Oregon State 1. Bradford scored from there, making it Arizona got one more touchdown before halftime, converting on third down four times in a 15-play, 65-yard drive. Solomon threw 11 yards to Richards on third-and-10, then threw 18 yards to Cayleb Jones to the Beavers 3. Bradford scored two plays later from the 1 and the Wildcats led 34-7 at the half. So on Saturday, when quarterback Jerrard Randall and the Arizona Wildcats turned their road game at Colorado into a fourth-quarter track meet, Baker felt right at home. The redshirt senior running back rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and Randall added 81 yards on 11 carries as the visiting Wildcats ran past the Buffaloes in a victory. Baker and Randall combined for 148 yards and three touchdowns in the final quarter to lock up the win for the Wildcats, now winners of two straight. Randall, a senior from Hollywood, Florida, entered the game near the end of the third quarter with the Wildcats trailing and instantly brought momentum to Arizona s side. Sophomore Anu Solomon started for the Wildcats and was effective, throwing for 283 yards. But with Colorado showing a defensive alignment that allowed some room to run, coach Rich Rodriguez opted to bring Randall in and show a change of pace. Number eight came in and gave us a little lift, Rodriguez said of Randall in his postgame radio interview. The way they were playing us, we thought Jerrard would have some opportunities to get some runs and open our run game up. The coach was spot-on. On his first drive, Randall moved the Wildcats 97 yards in just 90 seconds. Baker scored on a 45-yard rush on Arizona s sixth play of the drive to tie the game at 24. Randall had rushes of 15, 18 and 12 on that drive before Baker s touchdown. The Arizona defense then forced Colorado to punt, giving the ball right back to Randall and the Wildcats. Randall again found chunks of yards on the ground and hooked up with Cayleb Jones for a 31-yard pass, getting Arizona down to the 25-yard line. But after gaining seven yards, Randall was taken down hard and was forced to head to the sideline. Solomon came back in and immediately threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Baker on a wheel route to give the Wildcats the lead. Twelve came back in and didn t hang his head, Rodriguez said of Solomon, who completed 22 of 37 passes and threw touchdown passes to Baker and tight end Josh Kern. Leading 31-24, Arizona s defense again stopped Colorado, setting up the Wildcats at the Buffaloes 35-yard line. Randall re-entered and he and Baker touched the ball the next seven plays with the quarterback pounding it in from one yard out to give Arizona a 14-point lead with just less than five minutes to play. The O-line was blocking so well tonight, things were just opening up, Baker said. This time, Falk and the Cougars (5-2, 3-1) needed just four plays to march 80 yards with the quarterback again hooking up with Marks for a touchdown. This time, Falk found Marks for a 43-yard score to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter. Arizona got on the scoreboard on its third possession of the game when the Wildcats went 75 yards on 13 plays and scored on a 1-yard run from senior running back Jared Baker. The Wildcats defense forced another Washington State punt with just more than 12 minutes left in the half. Cougars punter Zach Charme punted to Arizona junior receiver Nate Phillips, who busted through the Washington State punt team to return it 69 yards for a touchdown to tie the game But the Cougars scored on their next four drives with three touchdowns and a field goal. The first score of the bunch again came from Falk and Marks. The two finished off a nine-play, 78-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to make it Arizona fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving Washington State the ball at the 23-yard line. Washington State needed just four plays to reach the end zone when Falk found Kyrin Priester for a 6-yard touchdown to make it with 6:51 to play in the half. Baker cut it to a seven-point game when he scored from seven yards out with 4:22 to play in the first. But Washington State s Erik Powell connected on a 25-yard field goal with 24 seconds left in the half to extend the lead to 10 points. After a Homecoming halftime that honored former Arizona greats Ka Deem Carey and Bobby Wade, the Cougars again stretched their lead to 17 on their first possession of the second half. Gerard Wicks capped an 84-yard drive with a 1-yard score to make it Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez then opted to bring Randall into the game for starter Anu Solomon. For the second straight week, Solomon was productive, passing for 145 yards and rushing for 24 on three carries. But looking for a spark, the Arizona coach turned to Randall. The senior from Hollywood, Florida provided it, coming through with a 59-yard rush on his first possession. On his second, after a Washington State punt, he drove Arizona 80 yards on 11 plays and found Cayleb Jones for a 3-yard touchdown to make it The Wildcats got the ball back with the score the same and Randall again drove Arizona deep into Washington State territory. Baker scored from six yards out to cut it to It was Baker s third rushing touchdown of the game. But Falk and Marks connected one final time to put the game out of reach when Marks hauled in a 9-yard touchdown from Falk with 2:03 left in the game. Randall found Johnny Jackson for a 20-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left, but Arizona was unable to pounce on an onside kick, giving the ball back to Washington State. Randall finished 11 for 16 for 137 yards and two touchdowns and added 105 rushing yards on just 10 carries. He played the remainder of the game after taking over for Solomon. Jones finished with a season-high 131 yards on eight catches for his sixth career 100-yard game. The junior also threw a 25-yard pass to Trey Griffey on a trick play. Defensively for Arizona, Paul Magloire led the way with 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Jeff Worthy also had a strong game, compiling five tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. After sitting out last week against Stanford with a shoulder injury, Browning was nearly flawless in leading the Huskies to their most lopsided conference victory since a 59-7 win over Colorado in Browning threw three first-half touchdowns as the Huskies (4-4, 2/3 Pac-12) built a 21-3 lead and added a 31-yard TD strike to Dante Pettis on the opening possession of the second half. Browning capped his night with his first career touchdown rushing to give the Huskies a 35-3 lead. Browning finished 16 of 24 passing for 263 yards. He joined Jake Locker, Keith Price, Brock Huard and Cody Pickett as the only Washington QBs with at least four touchdown passes in a game since Browning threw a pair of 13-yard touchdowns in the first half, first to Dwayne Washington out of the backfield and later to tight end Joshua Perkins. Browning added a 5-yard TD pass to Brayden Lenius with 54 seconds left in the first half that capped one of the Huskies most efficient drives of the season going 63 yards in just 91 seconds for a 21-3 lead. Dwayne Washington added a 69-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and backup quarterback Jeff Lindquist provided the capper with an 8-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter. The 49 points by Washington were the most against a conference opponent since putting up 63 on Oregon State late in the 2013 season. Arizona (5-4, 2-4) suffered its second straight loss, but unlike last week against Washington State when a comeback attempt fell short late, there was no fight from the Wildcats on a wet and blustery night. Arizona still needs one more victory to reach bowl eligibility but that won t be easy with games remaining against USC, Utah and Arizona State. Arizona was held to its lowest point output since getting shut out at Oregon in Washington sacked Arizona quarterbacks three times and forced four turnovers. Anu Solomon got the majority of the playing time at quarterback after it was expected that Jerrod Randall would get the call. Randall played sparingly in the first half before taking over late in the third quarter when the game was out of hand. After going 209 pass attempts this season without throwing an interception, Solomon threw two picks in his final 18 pass attempts of the first half. Solomon s 210th pass attempt of the season was intercepted by Sidney Jones late in the first quarter. Randall was later intercepted by Jojo McIntosh and Solomon was intercepted by Budda Baker on the final play of the first half on a desperation throw to the end zone. Solomon finished 18 of 31 passing for 160 yards. Arizona s 330 total yards were its second-fewest of the season. Cody Kessler passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns as the Trojans (6-3, 4-2 Pac-12) improved to 3-1 under interim coach Clay Helton and stayed in the race for the Pac-12 South title. Justin Davis rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns during USC s 472-yard offensive performance. JuJu Smith-Schuster caught a 72-yard touchdown pass among his eight catches for 138 yards just five days after surgery on his broken right hand. Nate Phillips, David Richards and Cayleb Jones caught touchdown passes from Anu Solomon for the Wildcats (5-5, 2-5), who have lost three straight and five of seven. The defending Pac-12 South champions were officially eliminated from contention for a repeat. Solomon passed for 352 yards, and Johnny Jackson joined Phillips and Richards with at least 86 yards receiving apiece. Arizona still couldn t keep up with USC largely because its defense foundered again. After giving up 1,099 yards and 94 points in the previous two games, the Wildcats yielded 462 yards and all 38 points to USC during the final three quarters. USC erased an early 14-point deficit and took its first lead on Davis TD run on the opening snap of the fourth quarter. After Casey Skowron s third field goal trimmed USC s lead to with 10:05 to play, Jones burst through Arizona s defense for the longest TD run of the freshman s career. Jones broke LenDale White s 2003 single-game record for yards rushing by a USC freshman. While Jones and Davis both had big performances on the ground, Smith-Schuster produced a standout game in the same week he got a plate and a screw inserted in his hand. After two weeks of miserable performances and off-the-field uncertainty about coach Rich Rodriguez s future, Arizona improbably got off to an excellent start on the first chilly autumn night of the season at the Coliseum. Phillips caught a 9-yard TD pass in the first quarter, and Richards had a 3-yard scoring grab on the opening snap of the second. Arizona s defense held USC to 12 first-quarter yards and even recovered a fumble. A two-play sequence in the second quarter changed everything. John Plattenburg picked off a poorly thrown pass by Solomon at the Trojans 6 to kill another likely scoring drive, and Kessler then hit Smith-Schuster down the middle for an untouched score on the next snap. The Trojans mounted a tying 82-yard drive that ended with Jones 5-yard scoring grab shortly before halftime. After Arizona turned the ball over on downs at midfield in the third quarter, Davis scoring run put the Trojans ahead. Davis rushed for his second score with 2:36 to play. Cayleb Jones caught a TD pass with 10 seconds left, but Arizona s onside kick went out of bounds. (AP) -- Backup quarterback Jerrard Randall completed one pass Saturday night. And, boy, was it a big one. Randall, playing in place of injured Anu Solomon, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nate Phillips on the first play of the second overtime and Arizona stunned Utah (No. 10 CFP, No. 10 AP) The loss knocked the Utes (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) into a first-place tie in the Pac-12 with USC, and the Trojans hold the tiebreaker by beating Utah. Solomon passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a season-high 86 yards for Arizona (6-5, 3-5) before leaving the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit with 9:25 left in regulation. No penalty was called. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said the victory has to be one of the best since I ve been here. Utah s Devontae Booker carried 34 times for 145 yards. The Utes star running back, who left the game in the third quarter and returned after a ride on the stationary bike, didn t have a run longer than 13 yards. Arizona s Caleb Jones caught five passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. The win snapped the Wildcats three-game losing streak and made them bowl eligible. Both of the Pac-12 one-loss teams went down to a second defeat. Oregon beat Stanford (No. 7 CFP, No. 7 AP) earlier Saturday. Arizona beat a Top 10 team for the fourth consecutive year under Rodriguez. It also was the Wildcats fourth straight win over Utah. Each team kicked a field goal in the first overtime. On the next play, Randall threw deep to Phillips, who gathered the pass in with his left hand and pulled it to his chest as he fell to the turf. I couldn t get nothing all night throwing the ball, Randall said, but I got that one touchdown. I think it was amazing. Utah drove to the 8-yard line in the second overtime but on second down Travis Wilson was sacked by Sani Fuimaono and Sir Thomas Jackson. On third-and-16 and fourth-and-16, Wilson s passes fell incomplete and the students rushed the field. ASU leads, Previous Meeting...Arizona 42, ASU 35...Nov. 28, 2014 (at Tucson) Streak...Home team has won last 3 games Score by Quarters F Arizona Arizona St TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandon Dawkins threw for 305 yards and ran for 78 more, nearly leading Arizona to a stunning comeback over rival Arizona State. The Sun Devils scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to stop the Arizona rally and win the game Dawkins was elevated to backup duties with the injury to Anu Solomon and was inserted in the game in the second quarter due to starter Jerrard Randall s ineffectiveness. Dawkins rushed for a score in addition to a pair of passing TDs, including a 95-yard strike to Trey Griffey, the third longest play in Arizona history. Mike Bercovici threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns in his final home game and Arizona State returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Arizona State (6-5, 4-4 Pac-12) sputtered offensively early before reeling off a string of big plays to build a 21-point halftime lead. Arizona (6-6, 3-6) managed to claw its way back within a touchdown, butkareem Orr returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown and Lloyd Carrington returned another 38 yards for a score on the next series. Devin Lucien had nine catches for 190 yards for Arizona State, which had 565 yards of total offense to become bowl eligible for the fifth straight season. Last year s Territorial Cup was the de facto Pac-12 South championship. Unfulfilled expectations surrounded this game. Arizona and Arizona State both beat Top-10 teams, but also had three-game losing streaks. The Wildcats locked up a bowl berth last week; the Sun Devils need one more victory to become bowl eligible. A big problem for both teams all season has been defensive breakdowns -- they re among the two worst in the Pac but the defenses dominated early. Arizona State finally broke through with a big play, when Bercovici hit Lucien on a 58-yard pass to set up Demario Richard s bulldozing 8-yard touchdown run. Next possession, Bercovici and Lucien hooked up again, this time for a 59-yard touchdown. Bercovici followed with a mistake, throwing an interception to Cam Denson, who jumped the screen pass and raced in for a 21-yard touchdown. It did nothing to slow the Sun Devils down. A 65-yard, multiple-tackle-breaking run by Kalen Ballage set up Zane Gonzalez s 29-yard field goal as the half ended. Arizona s offense stagnated without starting quarterback Anu Solomon, out with a concussion. Randall, as he has much of the season, repeatedly overthrew receivers on deep routes or threw too hard on short passes. He was 4 for 13 for 35 yards and lost a fumble before being replaced by Dawkins. The switch did little to change Arizona s fortunes in the first half. The Wildcats had 141 total yards -- six fewer than Lucien had receiving -- to trail Arizona s first two scoring drives stalled out and led to field goals by Casey Skowron, but Trey Griffey made sure he got to the end zone, zigzagging his way across the field for a 95-yard reception that pulled the Wildcats within But after laboring through the third quarter, Arizona State s offense work up just in time. The Sun Devils moved 74 yards in 11 plays to set up D.J. Foster s 1-yard touchdown run and push the lead back to 15. Dawkins found Tyrell Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown pass, but his two interceptions helped seal the Territorial Cup for the Sun Devils.
