Junior Jalen Ross has finished in double figures in five-straight games, netting 12 against UMass Lowell. He has totaled 72 points (14.0 average) in the last five contests. Hartford s defeat at the hand of UMass Lowell marked the sixth defeat this season by seven points or less. Hartford has a 7-5 record when leading with five minutes left this season. Pancake Thomas 37 points against UML marked his third game of 35 points or more this season, joining him with Vin Baker as the only players with multiple 35-point games in his career. He has the three highest-scoring games in the conference this season. Hartford is averaging 71.0 points per game on the season, 75.0 per contest in conference action. Those averages are up significantly from a year ago for the Hawks, as Hartford averaged 61.9 points per game last season, including 62.6 points during conference action. Jason Dunne scored a career-high 10 points against Albany, going 3-for-4 from the field. The freshman has scored 39 points in the last seven games. Sophomore walk-on Mark Plousis played a career-high 11 minutes against UMass Lowell, helping the Hawks recover from a 15-point deficit. No. Player LAST GAME S STARTERS Pos. Cl.-Exp. 3 SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES Stony Brook has been the class of the America East, holding a perfect 10-0 record in conference play and bringing 15 straight wins into Monday s affair. The winning streak is the longest active run in Division I, and with the run the Seawolves are receiving votes in the Associated Press poll. Most recently, SBU knocked off UMass Lowell on the road on Saturday behind 24 points and 14 rebounds by Jameel Warney. The Seawolves landed all five starters in double digits. Warney, the frontrunner for America East Player of the Year, leads the league with 18.3 points and 10.6 rebounds on the season. Three others - Carson Puriefoy (14.3), Rayshun McGrew (10.9) and Ahmad Walker (10.9) - are averaging in double figures as well. Walker s 4.5 assists are best in the league, while his 6.9 rebounds are fifth. TWENTY-SOMETHINGS With Pancake Thomas 37 points against UMass Lowell, it marks nine games out of the last 11 that Hartford has had a player finish with at least 20 points. Four different Hawks players have netted 20 in the last eight contests. Thomas, who was forced to sit out last season due to NCAA rules, played 67 games in two seasons at New Mexico, making 12 starts. He battled injuries and illness early in the season, but has been truly healthy since Christmas and the results have been astounding. Over the last 11, he is averaging 22.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists. At Rider, he had one of the finest games in the history of Hartford Basketball, netting 35 points to go with 17 rebounds. He showed it was no fluke, as he carried the load against Yale with 24 points on 7-for-17 shooting. He also added 29 points on a career-high 10-for- 21 shooting against Vermont. On Jan. 24, he delivered an even finer performance, going off for 38 at New Hampshire on 12-for-17 shooting. It marked the most points by an America East player since Boston University s John Holland in February He added another stellar game against Maine, filling the stat sheet with 29 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. He hit another mark against UMass Lowell, netting 37 points on 10-for- 20 shooting, marking three games out of four with at least 29 points. With three games of 35 points or more on the season, he joined Vin Baker (five in , seven in ) as the only players with three games of 35- plus points. Thomas has scored in double figures 14 times this season, with eight games of 20 or more points. He is in the league s top 10 in scoring (2nd), rebounds (6th), free-throw percentage (8th), steals (5th), assist-toturnover ratio (4th), minutes (3rd) and threepoint field goals (6th). No. Name Pos. 4 4 Hawks sign Hassan Attia to NLI The University of Hartford men s basketball team signed 6-foot-10, 270-pound Hassan Attia (Alexandria, Egypt/Colby Community College) to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period. Attia will have two years of eligibility remaining when he joins the Hawks for the season. Hassan is a space-eater in the truest sense of the word, Gallagher said. With his ability to block shots and grab rebounds, he will be able to match up with anyone in our league and most of the bigs we face in nonconference action. Our program became better with the signing of Hassan today. As a freshman last season, Attia started in 24 of the 30 games he played. He averaged 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per contest a season ago, including a 15-point, 12-rebound outing in an win over Southwestern College, one of five double-doubles he posted on the year. As a sophomore, Attia is averaging 9.4 points and 9.2 rebounds in just 18.8 minutes of action per contest. He has also delivered an impressive 2.3 blocks and 1.1 steals. He has 11 double-doubles, finishing with at least 10 rebounds in 13 of his 22 contests. He has six games this year with at least four blocks as well. He had a monster game against Cloud County with 21 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks. Attia also spent time with the Egyptian National Team in the Under-18 program. And after an excellent few days of practice, he delivered his brightest at UMBC. The Greenbelt, Md., native went 6-for-11 from the field and 13-for-14 from the freethrow line to deliver a career-high 27 points in leading the Hawks to the victory. Most of his damage came after the break, as he played 16 minutes, netted 18 points, dished out all five of his assists and snared three of his four rebounds. He was huge down the stretch in helping the Hawks preserve the win, going 9-for-10 at the line in the final 1:02 or action, and adding a layup with 1:22 to play. That has started a strong stretch for the redshirt junior, who has now delivered fivestraight games in double digits. In that span, Ross has gone 19-for-45 (.422) from the field, 7-for-15 (.467) from downtown and 27- for-31 (.871) at the line. He made his first start in a Hawks uniform against Maine. The UMBC game wasn t the first breakout performance for Ross, who delivered 21 points at Providence as well. In that game, he went 8-for-11 from the field, and again did most of his work after the break. Seventeen of his 21 came after halftime. He has finished in double digits nine times. Ross played two years at Eastern Michigan prior to transferring to Hartford, sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Ross played in 60 games for the Eagles with 23 career starts. AT THE STRIPE Going 24-for-29 at the line against UMass Lowell, the Hawks posted their fifth-straight game hitting at least 75 percent of their shots at the line. In the last five, Hartford is 90-for-112 (.804) at the stripe to push the season percentage up to.742. That total is second in the league behind Albany, and ranks the Hawks 35th in the nation. Upcoming Schedule Monday, Feb. 8 Hartford at Stony Brook, 7 p.m. Albany at Binghamton, 7 p.m. Maine at New Hampshire, 7 p.m. UMass Lowell at Vermont, 7 p.m. The 24 makes against UML marked the seventh time this year that Hartford has posted at least 20, with the season high coming in the year s first game at Central Connecticut (26). Hartford has made singledigit free throws just three times this season. The breakdown of free throws in the last five is astounding, as Pancake Thomas and Jalen Ross have combined to go 65-for-77 (.844), accounting for 72.2 percent of the team s makes. The rest of the Hawks have combined to go just 25-for-35 (.714). GIT R DUNNE In a year where freshmen J.R. Lynch and George Blagojevic have been a constant presence since the early season and TreVaughn Wilkerson has gained notoriety at home for some thunderous dunking ability, freshman Jason Dunne may be flying under the radar for Hawks fans this season. But steadily, the Matawan, N.J., native is making a name for himself as the season progresses. The last few games have seen Dunne improve his output. He delivered a careerbest 10 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers in a loss to Albany. Then, he followed that up with seven points against UMass Lowell, going 3-for-4 from the field. In the last five games, he has shot 11-for-20 (.550) from the field, and has delivered 18 points in the paint (all nine of his field goals from inside the arc). The newcomer has not scored in bunches, but he has been a consistent contributor off the bench, delivering at least one field goal in each of the last 14 games. In conference action, he has averaged 5.3 points in 14.8 minutes of work. Dunne has been more noted for his defensive contributions, where he is a strong on-the-ball defender for the Hawks. He has totaled 14 steals, but more notably, has converted turnovers into points, as he has scored 26 of his 76 points on the year off turnovers.

5 CLOSE SHAVES Hartford has certainly had its share of close losses during the season, the latest being UMass Lowell s victory on Wednesday. The River Hawks got the winning bucket from Jahad Thomas with less than two seconds to play in that contest. It marked the 12th time this season that the Hawks have been in a game decided by 10 points or less, and Hartford holds a 5-7 mark in that situation. In defeats at the hands of Quinnipiac, UML and Rider, the Hawks have lost by just two points. SMOOTH MOVES When Hartford came out flat at the beginning of Wednesday s game, head coach John Gallagher called on an unfamiliar player to change the Hawks fortunes. Gallagher inserted walk-on Mark Smooth Plousis to occupy the 5 slot and bring much-needed energy to a Hawks team that was down The effect was instantaneous, as Hartford went on a 13-2 run after Plousis entered, cutting the deficit to just four at Plousis played a career-high 11 minutes in the contest, after having played just 23 minutes in his career before that game. SHARING THE WEALTH With four different players finishing in double digits, the Maine game marked the seventh time this season the Hawks have seen at least four different players score in double figures. Hartford narrowly missed having five players in double figures for the second time this season, as George Blagojevic finished with nine points. The Hawks are now 5-2 on the season when placing at least four in double digits. Hartford has turned that trick twice in the last five games after not doing so for a span of seven games. OVER AND OVER AND OVERTIME Hartford went to overtime for the third time this season against Maine. The Hawks are now 1-2 in games that go beyond 40 minutes. The contest marked the first game that has gone just a single overtime, with a double-overtime win over Central Connecticut and a double-overtime loss to Rider. Each of the games has been a different situation to get to the extra session, as CCSU hit a last-second shot to send the game to overtime, while the Hawks delivered the game-tying shot at Rider. In Wednesday s contest, with the game tied, the Hawks had the last shot of regulation, but Taylor Dyson s attempt rimmed out. The Houston native returned to the court in after taking the season away from basketball for personal reasons. Cooper played in 30 games with 13 starts in , and played in 30 games with 10 starts as a freshman. Cooper had a stellar game against Widener, though, scoring a season-best 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, knocking down five three-balls in the process. He followed that up with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from downtown at Rider, but went into a funk to start Cooper missed eight straight three-balls to start the calendar year, totaling just two points in four games. He was just 1-for-11 from the field, and struggled on both ends, contributing only one steal. After six points at New Hampshire, he delivered 15 his highest aside from the Widener game this season. Beginning with the UMBC game, Cooper went 13-for-23 (.565) from the field and 9-for-17 (.529) from downtown over the next four contests, averaging 10.0 points, 1.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds. But he struggled in the UML matchup, going just 1-for-8 from the field and 1-for-7 from downtown Cooper entered his junior season with 1,500 minutes played in his career. He averaged 7.5 points and totaled 71 assists over his first two seasons. #HAWKNATIONDOMINATION When Director of Athletics Anton Goff arrived at the University of Hartford, he made it clear that he had lofty goals for the future. His stated goal of not just winning, but dominating. From there the catchphrase became Hawk Nation Domination - and it is a mantra that all the Hartford athletics teams have embraced. 5

The Hawks are averaging 71.0 points per game this season, up an impressive 9.1 points from a year ago (61.9). Interestingly, the increase is not due to better shooting, as the Hawks have actually seen a decrease in shooting percentage (.404 vs..402). Hartford is attempting 58.3 field goals per game this year, up 9.6 percent from a year ago (53.2). Hartford has also seen a significant increase in offense during this season, as it averaged just 68.7 points in non-conference action, a number that has increased to 75.0 in league action. The Hawks have three players averaging double-digit scoring in America East action, led by Pancake Thomas TAKING CARE OF THE BASKETBALL The Maine game bucked a major trend for the Hawks. Hartford entered the contest having turned the ball over just 43 times in the previous five contests, an average of 8.3 per game. But against the Black Bears, the Hawks committed 21 turnovers, tied for the most this season (the other occasion coming against St. Francis). The contrast from the previous game is simply amazing. At UNH, the Hawks had one of their finest games in program history in the category, totaling just three turnovers. That was the fewest since having three turns against Vermont on Jan. 30, The last time the Hawks had fewer than three turnovers came on Jan. 7, 2002, when Hartford turned it over just twice against Boston University. That marks a difference of 18 turnovers from UNH to Maine. In the Albany contest, the Hawks reverted to proper form, committing just eight turnovers on the night, but then the River Hawks forced Hartford into 18 turnovers on Wednesday night. That game marked the ninth time this season that the Hawks have had fewer steals than the opposition, and the ninth time that Hartford has been defeated. Hartford has seven games where it has committed single-digit turnovers this season, six of those being games with eight or fewer. By contrast, Hawks opponents have finished with single-digit turnovers just three times on the season, and just once since Nov. 19. That came at UMBC when the Retrievers committed just nine turns. Only Stony Brook has fewer turnovers per game this year in the conference, with the Hawks 12.2 ranking second in the league and 102nd in the nation. In terms of turnover margin, the Hawks lead the league at plus- 2.3, which places Hartford 53rdd in all of Division I. NEW FACES ON THE COURT With Hartford having graduated six seniors from last year s team there are a number of players who started the season unfamiliar to Hawks fans. At age 38, Gallagher is the 24th youngest head coach in Division I basketball, and one of just 37 in the nation who began the year younger than age 40. Gallagher has led the team to at least 14 wins in three straight years, including 17 wins in two of the last three. A TOUGH BREAK Sophomore John Carroll came out of the gates impressively for the Hawks, averaging 11.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in the first five games of the year. But the Irishman tore his ACL in the Niagara game and will miss the remainder of the season. He is likely to receive a hardship waiver to recuperate the year of eligibility. He was the Hawks only true returning post player entering the year. Carroll has undergone his surgery and is currently in recovery. ALPHABETICAL ROSTER No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Hartford enters the season with a flock of new faces on the precipice of new heights. With 48 wins over the last three campaigns, the Hawks need just 15 victories to set a new record for a four-year span. The season saw the Hawks garner a number of individual honors, including America East co-sixth Man of the Year Justin Graham. Senior Mark Nwakamma earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors, becoming the second player in school history to earn all-league honors all four years. Following the season, three Hawks signed professional contracts Nwakamma (Israel), Corban Wroe (Australia) and Yolonzo Moore II (Cyprus). The Hawks completed their second-straight winning season in under Gallagher, finishing at overall while tying the program s mark for the most Division I regular season victories. That campaign followed what is arguably Hartford s most successful season, a stretch that featured a 17-win season capped by Hartford s firstever Division I postseason bid all while boasting the 11th youngest squad in the nation in The title of America East Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com capped a breakthrough season for Gallagher that featured the most conference wins since (10) as well as the best non-league record since (7-6). In addition, Gallagher was a finalist for the prestigious Skip Prosser Award. Attributing to the Hawks success that season was their tenacity on the defensive side of the court. Holding its opponents to just 61.2 points per game, Hartford set a program Division I record while leading the America East in steals (8.2 per game) and forced turnovers (16 per game). The Hawks have also fared well in the classroom under Gallagher, posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher to earn a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Academic Excellence Award in Highlighting four student-athletes who took home NABC Honors Court accolades for achieving a grade point average of 3.2 or higher was Wroe, who also garnered America East All-Academic Team honors while becoming the first-ever Hawk to earn DI-AAA Athletics Directors Association (ADA) Scholar-Athlete Team accolades. Gallagher s coaching resume includes 15 years of experience at the Division I level. He was named head coach in spring 2010 and is the 10th coach in the 63- year history of the University of Hartford men s basketball program. After piloting the Hawks to the College Insider Tournament in , Gallagher inked a new contract that will keep him as head coach through the academic year. Gallagher s hiring served as a reunion for the Philadelphia native as he previously logged two seasons as the Hawks associate head coach from Before making his return to the sidelines at Hartford, he served two seasons as an associate head coach under Glen Miller at the University of Pennsylvania. After the 2010 Final Four, Gallagher left Penn to become Steve Donahue s Associate Head Coach at Boston College, but was released from that position when the opportunity to return to Hartford arose. During his tenure as an assistant at Hartford, Gallagher implemented a new motion offense for the Hawks, one that resulted in a scoring average of 62.1 points per game in his first year ( ) and 70.8 points per game in his second season ( ). In the latter season, which featured a school- and league-record 312 made three-

9 pointers, Hartford made its first-ever America East Championship title game appearance while posting a Division I record 18 wins. Prior to his first stint at Hartford, Gallagher was the top assistant for Fran O Hanlon s staff at Lafayette College. At Lafayette, he served as the program s top recruiter and was responsible for developing the team s guards. Gallagher arrived at Lafayette by way of La Salle University where he coached five seasons, two of which came under Big 5 legend Speedy Morris and the final three under Billy Hahn. He jumped right into coaching in 1999 upon graduating from Saint Joseph s University, where he was a guard for three seasons and a member of the 1996 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Gallagher is one of four siblings in a basketball-rich family, as his sisters Ann and Joan both played college basketball at La Salle and Boston College, respectively. Gallagher and his wife, Geneva, have two daughters, Kenna and Alanna, and one son, John Jack Gallagher. The couple is currently expecting their fourth child.
