5 chairman s report Season 2014 was the 38th year of the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League and its predecessor, the BRL Sub-District Clubs, and was another successful one for the League. The competitions in 2014 involved 3,706 players from 81 men s teams and 14 women s teams from a total of 52 clubs who took part in seven Open grades and one Under 20 grade in the men s competitions and two grades in the women s competition. Overall, there was an increase of two clubs and seven teams from Congratulations go to all our Premiership and Ted Beaumont Trophy winners, who are listed on page 20 of this report. The representative season saw our Open Grade team defeat Gold Coast and draw with Ipswich 16 all, while our Under 20s lost to Gold Coast and defeated Ipswich Brisbane Second Division won the Chairman s Challenge overall. I thank all those who worked so hard with the representative teams. The 2014 season was the 23rd year of sponsorship by our major sponsor Castlemaine Perkins XXXX along with our associate sponsor AlphaSport and the 10th year of our associate sponsorship by Struddys Sports. These sponsorships were most beneficial to the League and, we hope, to our sponsors. Our season launch was again held at the Tap Room at the XXXX brewery, indicating our close relationship with our major sponsor. The League thanks these sponsors for their involvement in 2014 and every indication is that they will continue as sponsors for many years to come. We also thank the Connolly family for their continued sponsorship of the Ted Beaumont Medal for the outstanding player of the competition, which was won by Terry Kepu from Logan Brothers. Tragically, our great friend and worker Janice Gutugutuwai lost her battle with cancer during the year, just three days after our representative teams wore their special Jannie jerseys in the Chairman s Challenge matches. The respect for Jannie in the community was seen by the fact that over 1200 friends attended her funeral. During the year, 64 men and 16 women were dismissed from the field in nearly 1000 matches. This was a very good effort showing good discipline by most players. In the first two-thirds of the season we still had most cases involving verbal abuse of referees. Strong action by the Judiciary saw these cases drop in the latter part of the season. A concern was a significant increase in the number of women sent form the field and the League will continue to take strong action in these cases. Special thanks are due to the League s Judiciary Officer, Ray Dixon and to those who sat on the Judiciary Tribunal when needed. The League will be looking to a further reduction in all cases in This was the 10th year of our use of the Leaguenet internet system to give us our own website at bsdrl. leaguenet.com.au as well as the BDWRL website. These websites enabled the season draw to be posted on the web, all results to be on the web each Saturday night as well as news items being posted throughout the year. The success of the website can be seen by the fact that there were 1,388,604 page requests on the BSDRL website for the year and 112,594 page requests on the BDWRL website. These figures show a significant increase on website usage over The websites continue to be linked to our Facebook page. The integration of the BSDRL and BDWRL competitions continued throughout the year and the two competitions are now virtually run as one. Once again, I must sincerely thank our Secretary, Ian Harvey and Treasurer, Steve Lewis, for their efforts throughout the year and Keith Beaumont and Catherine Carroll for their efforts in many ways. I must also thank Ian s wife, Denise, for her continued help and support to the League. Thanks are also due to all members of the League s Executive Committee and to their wives and husbands for sharing them with the League throughout the year. Laurie Oberhardt was rewarded with Life Membership of the League at last year s Annual General Meeting. The League readily acknowledges, and thanks, the many people and organisations who helped make 2014 the successful year it was. We thank the Queensland Rugby League for its continued support and grant; the South East Queensland Division Board of Delegates; the Brisbane Rugby League Referees Association for officiating at matches and judging the XXXX Player of the Year awards; Ian Blank and his assistants for their allocation of referees throughout the year; the clubs that hosted our semi-final matches, (Arana Hills, Beenleigh Juniors, Beerwah, Browns Plains, Burleigh Heads, Burpengary, Easts Juniors, Souths Juniors, St Brendans and Valleys Juniors); Souths Logan for the continued use of Davies Park for meetings; Eastern Suburbs for the use of Langlands Park for finals matches; Brad Tallon, Michael Pease, Shane McNally, Julie Lorraway, Trish Ubank, Erin Tagi, Fiona Lovelock and Anna Williams, and the Development Officers in the South East Queensland Division; our workers especially those who helped on our finals days; all delegates, club officials and players for their cooperation during the year; and our sponsors, Castlemaine Perkins XXXX, AlphaSport, Struddys Sports and S.O.Signs. The next twelve months will be an interesting period for the League with the re-introduction of the BRL competition and the introduction of Rugby League Brisbane and its role in the administration of both the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League and the Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League. Both of these events will be works in progress in Quite independently of these events, I have decided that I will step down from my role in the League after 23 years as Secretary and 15 years as Chairman. I would thank all those who have assisted me over the 38 years since the League commenced and wish all those associated with the League all the best for the future. Mick Tierney Chairman 3

6 secretary s report 2014 was another successful season in what was our 38th year of competition. We started in 1977 as Sub Districts with 14 clubs, 2 grades and 15 teams before becoming Brisbane Second Division and finishing the 2014 season with 52 clubs, 10 grades and 95 teams. The League s growth rate has once again continued to remain constant and has retained its popularity. Last year we included 10 women s teams in the Brisbane and District Women s Rugby League and due to the popular concept of this competition, this year with 14 teams, we divided the competition into two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2. By creating the two divisions it generated a more even competition for the players. On field incidents and the number of forfeits by clubs this season is a major concern with the League. It would appear that when clubs are required to travel, the rate of player injury and subsequent forfeit is higher than when clubs have a home game. The League does not have an answer to this problem other than looking at greater penalties being imposed on clubs as a result of their actions. The representative season commenced in May with matches being played in Ipswich. This year we overcame our disappointment of last year by winning the Divisional Championship with Ipswich second and Gold Coast in third position. In the game on Saturday 17th May the Brisbane Second Division A Grade won their match against Gold Coast while the Under 20 side lost their match against Gold Coast in a close encounter On Sunday the A Grade side played a thrilling match against Ipswich coming from behind in the dying minutes resulting in a draw while the Under 20 won their Ipswich match As a result of the win by Ipswich against Gold Coast, it came down to a count back on points to decide the Divisional A Grade Championship. As a result of the count back Brisbane was declared the winner. It was the determined effort by our Under 20 side that enabled our A Grade side to take out the trophy. Gold Coast took out the Under 20 trophy by the barest of margins from Brisbane. I congratulate all the team management, players and especially our representative co-ordinators Keith Beaumont and Catherine Carroll for their outstanding contribution and dedication. Both teams wore special jerseys displaying the DSRCT logo honouring Janice Gutugutuwai in her fight against cancer. Janice was advised of our win which put a smile on her face but unfortunately she lost her battle three days later. The season finally came to a successful conclusion on Saturday 20th September with the Grand Final in the Northside 1, Southside 1 and Under 20 competitions. The last of the grand finals once again produced fabulous crowds. In fact, the crowds were great for all of the finals series. I congratulate all grand final winners and teams who participated in the final series. I would also like to give thanks to the clubs who hosted semi finals and I am sure despite the rather inclement weather they encountered, they were well rewarded for their efforts. Special thanks must go to Des Morris and the staff of Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League for their continued support and for allowing us the use of their excellent ground and facilities. A huge thank you to Shane Oswald from S.O.Signs for providing the placards that were presented to the grand final winners. This is a great donation which continues to be much appreciated by all of the winning teams. The Player of the Year Awards night was held on Friday 26th September at Souths Sports Club and once again it was a successful evening. Congratulations to all winners and runners up for their achievements throughout the season. Terry Kepu from Logan Brothers took out the double by winning the Southside 1 Player of the Year Medal and the Ted Beaumont Trophy. Cameron Joyce from Bulimba Valleys and Trent Shield from Mt Gravatt were jointly awarded the Glen Oswald Memorial Trophy as representative players of the year. Elisha Edwards was presented with the Nev Rotherham Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award. Elisha has been volunteering for Brisbane Second Division for approximately 10 years. While she follows a number of clubs, she has never held a committee position with any club or League. I thank the various referees for their co-operation and efforts to allocate points towards player awards. This annual event is no easy task to co-ordinate and special thanks must go to Catherine Carroll and Keith Beaumont for their continued valuable contribution in ensuring that the night is a success. I would also like to thank my wife, Denise, for all of the hard work that she continues to do in collating all of the points allocated during the season as well as recording all of the games played obtained from the match cards. To the QRL South East Queensland Division Chairman, Brad Tallon, Division staff, Michael Pease and Trish Ubank and the Rugby League Brisbane staff, Shane McNally, Julie Lorraway, Erin Tagi and Fiona Lovelock. I sincerely thank you for your input and assistance. To all our volunteers who helped out at the Ted Beaumont Trophies and the Finals Series, your help has been greatly appreciated. To our sponsors Castlemaine Perkins XXXX, AlphaSport, Struddys Sports and S.O.Signs, we give a great big thank you for your support and encouragement. Without this we could not continue to provide a competition at reduced financial costs to clubs. I would like to thank my fellow committee members in particular Steve Lewis, Keith Beaumont and Catherine Carroll for all their help and support they have given me throughout the year. I wish to pay special acknowledgment for the outstanding contribution Mick Tierney has made to the Brisbane Second Division and for the support he has given to me since becoming Secretary in 2000 when he was appointed Chairman of the League. Mick was elected as Secretary in 1977 and held this position until 2000 when he became Chairman after the death of former Chairman Ted Beaumont. In total, Mick has been involved in the League for 38 years and during this time has seen the League grow from a modest 14 club 15 team competition to what it is today with 52 clubs and 95 teams. Mick s contribution to the League and to Rugby League in general has been invaluable and while he may be leaving us he will continue to be remembered. So on behalf of my fellow committee members and our member clubs I wish you well in your retirement from the League and success in any other endeavours that you may undertake. Finally, I wish all the clubs and their members a safe and happy holiday season and also to thank them for their continued understanding and co-operation throughout the year and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2015 for what hopefully will be another exciting season. 8 referees delegate report There is an old saying that the older you get the shorter the years become. I m inclined to agree with that as I sit down to write my report as it only seems like yesterday that I wrote it for the 2013 season. First and foremost, I must repeat what I said in 2012 and 2013 as to what a privilege it has been to be the Referees Delegate to Second Division. Being able to interact directly with club delegates at their meetings, meant that two way communications, between the clubs to the Referees Association and vice versa resulted in open discussions. For this I thank Chairman Mick Tierney and his committee. At the risk of repeating myself, I would say that by working together positive results have been achieved. The Referees Association continues to work hard to ensure that our referees receive the necessary training to improve their on-field performances. This year we had a professional trainer to improve their fitness and continued discussion groups to work on their knowledge of the laws of the game. However, the above is unfortunately to no avail as we still have those persons whose sole aim at matches is to direct abuse at match officials. Until this can be stamped out, or at least curtailed, we will continue to lose referees - especially in the younger age group. Do we have to put a sign up at every ground worded No referee, No game to get through to them? I would like to congratulate those clubs who won premierships in their respective grades as well as individual medal winners in each of the grades. Finally, after forty three years of involvement with refereeing, the last thirty years in Brisbane, I have decided to blow full time. Once again, I thank Mick and his committee and all the club delegates for making my position so enjoyable over the past three years. Have a well-earned off season and may the 2015 season be even bigger and better. Yours in rugby league, the greatest game of all. Derek Stubbins L/M BRLRA Delegate 6

Set as a gathering in Ipswich for three years, can only see the south-east providing a pathway for the growing number of players from within our competition, Ipswich and Gold Coast. Our Under 20 team continued to grow in strength, thanks to returning coach Paul Dinte. Jonesy, you did a great job as our manager, Jayden, Wayne, Batesy and Rynny! Thank you for all your help this year as support staff. Gold Coast proved to be the dominant force again in 2014 although the improvement of the Ipswich and Brisbane sides was both noticeable and encouraging. Craig Rodgers was appointed as coach for our Opens grade side, assisted by Peter Handley and Peter Bourke as manager. With increasing player injuries each week, there was no shortage of commitment from our players and the coaching staff, and I wish to thank and congratulate all our Opens players and officials for their efforts. Thanks once again to Physio Rick Walton who ensured our player recovery was second to none. I would also like to thank Rhino Cell, RM Roadmakers and Outback Insulation for their sponsorship of our teams training gear. As overall winners of the Challenge, congratulations goes to all the players for their efforts during our 2014 Representative period and a special thank you goes to the volunteer coaches, managers, strappers, league safe runners, selectors etc who gave up their time every week to ensure we put these teams on the field. This year the front of the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League jerseys donned the DSRCT logo in recognition and support of our former staff member Janice Gutugutuwai and her struggle with this disease. Smiling from her bedside after hearing of our win, she sadly passed three days later. Brisbane Second Division Rugby League awarded Trent Shield and Cameron Joyce as joint winners of the Glen Oswald Representative Player of the Year trophy. All in all it was a great year on the field and we look forward to stepping up in season 2015 and going that little bit further with the results. Keith Beaumont 14

23 TREASURER S REPORT Firstly, I would like to thank all clubs for their all their efforts over the last twelve months. The next year sees a major change occur in the administration of the game in the Brisbane area with the formation of Rugby League Brisbane and the extra costs that are to be borne by our League. This is necessary for Rugby League to survive in the age where Administrative Volunteering is becoming unsustainable. This unfortunately will see an increase in costs associated with being part of the rugby league community. Sponsorships are a very important part of the sustainability of the financial viability of the League and I would personally like to offer our sincere thanks to our major sponsor Castlemaine Perkins XXXX and our associate sponsors AlphaSports Medicine and Struddys Sports for their continuing support. Grants were received from the QRL South East Queensland Division. I sincerely wish to thank the Division, as a whole, for their ongoing support. Significant income and costs variations that appear in our books this year include combined grants from QRL SEQ and XXXX reducing by $9,444, a new item Motor Vehicle Running Costs $2,183, Telephone and Internet increasing by $5,847 and Beer Booth Expenses increasing by $9,670. I will explain these variations as a separate report to the AGM. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the great work by our Chairman Mick Tierney over the last 38 years as either Secretary or Chairman of our League. Mick, Please enjoy a much needed rest from the rigours of administrating Rugby League. You have earned it. Thanks Mate, for all your help and guidance. I would also like to thank Secretary Ian Harvey and his wife Denise for their untiring support as well as all other members of the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League Management Committee and their partners. Also I cannot forget the little band of volunteers who ably assist us to complete our duties at various venues Thanks. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the committee of Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Football Club especially Des, Vivien (and her staff) and Ian who without their commitment we would not be able to successfully hold our Ted Beaumont Medal and Finals at Langlands Park. Also a big thanks to all our Referees, Touch Judges, Ball Boys, Match Day Officials, Coaches, Managers and Players whose assistance throughout the year makes our game a success. Steve Lewis Treasurer 21
