3 Head Coach Mike Maker First Season California Baptist/1988 Career Record: Record at Marist: 1-11 Mike Maker was hired as the 11th head coach in Marist men s basketball history on June 17, In his most recent position before arriving at Marist, Maker posted an impressive record of (.821) in six years as head coach of Williams College. During his tenure at Williams, the Ephs reached the Final Four on three occasions, including two berths in the Division III national championship game. His 16 NCAA Tournament victories at Williams are a school record. Last season, Maker led Williams to a berth in the 2014 Division III national championship game for the second time in five seasons. The Ephs posted a record of 28-5 overall, and ranked in the nation s top 10 in seven statistical categories. At Williams, Maker won at least 17 games in all six seasons, and won at least 26 games four times. In 2010, the Ephs reached the Division III national championship game, finished 30-2, set a school record with 21 straight wins and led the nation in four statistical categories. That season, Maker was named Basketball Times Co-National Coach of the Year, D3hoops.com Northeast Region Coach of the Year and NESCAC Coach of the Year. Following a second straight trip to the Final Four in 2011, Maker was a finalist for Glenn Robinson Division III Coach of the Year. In 2013, he was named D3hoops.com Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for Glenn Robinson Division III Coach of the Year after an Elite Eight appearance. Maker comes to Marist with 26 years of coaching experience, including 17 as an assistant at the Division I level. Prior to becoming head coach at Williams, Maker worked under current Oregon head coach Dana Altman at Creighton in the season, during which the Bluejays reached the second round of the NIT. Maker served as an assistant at West Virginia under head coach John Beilein from The Mountaineers reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2006, and won the Postseason NIT in West Virginia posted a record of in his two seasons there. Before arriving at West Virginia, Maker had a three-year stint as assistant coach at Samford ( ) under head coach Jimmy Tillette. Prior to that, he spent 11 years at Dartmouth ( ), where he earned the title of associate head coach, and served as the program s recruiting coordinator and director of scouting. Maker s first head coaching position came during the season, when he guided the Hartnell College women s basketball program. He started his coaching career as assistant coach and head junior varsity coach at his alma mater, California Baptist, from A native of Salinas, Calif., Maker is a member of the North Salinas High School Hall of Fame. He began his collegiate playing career at Hartnell College ( ), where he was a two-year captain, an honorable mention all-conference selection and earned an associate of arts degree in general education. He then played at California Baptist College ( ), where he was once again a two-year captain and earned Academic All-America honors. Maker graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from California Baptist in 1988, and earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University in Maker and his wife Erica are the parents of a two-year-old son, Jack. EMERGENCE OF LAWRENCE: Prior to this season, junior F Phillip Lawrence had a single-game career high in scoring of seven points. Lawrence has exceeded that total nine times in Marist s 12 games. He has seven double-digit scoring games, all of which have occurred in Marist s last nine games. Lawrence set a career high in scoring with 19 points in Marist s victory against Fresno State on Nov. 26. LAWRENCE FOR THREE: Junior F Phillip Lawrence is 17-for-45 (.378) on three-pointers this season. In his first two seasons, Lawrence was just 5-for-23 (.217) from three-point range. Lawrence had a career-high four three-pointers at Elon on Dec. 28. HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOOTING: In his last three games, junior C Eric Truog is shooting.625 (15-for-24) from the field and.571 (4-for-7) from three-point range while averaging 13.3 points per game. CONVERTING FROM THE LINE: In seven of its last nine games, Marist has hit more free throws than the opposition. The Red Foxes have also had a higher free-throw percentage than their opponent six times in the last nine games. Both Thomas and Lewis enter tonight s game with 103 career games played. The program s all-time record for games played is 117, which is currently held by Jared Jordan, Andy Lake and Ben Farmer. LEE S MINUTES: With the injuries to Khallid Hart and T.J. Curry, G K.J. Lee has started Marist s last 10 games at point guard, and has played 385 out of a possible 400 minutes. Lee has played 40 minutes five times. He ranks third in the MAAC in minutes per game (37.0), leads all MAAC freshmen in minutes per game and is ranked 12th in the NCAA through games played on Dec. 31. A HIGH LOW: Freshman G K.J. Lee s has played 36 minutes in each of Marist s last two games. Those are his lowest single-game totals since joining Marist s starting lineup. TROUBLE WITH TURNOVERS: Marist has committed at least 16 turnovers in each of its last seven games. The Red Foxes are averaging 19.3 turnovers per game in this span, and have a turnover ratio of minus-4.3 per game in this span. : Marist has been outrebounded in 11 of its 12 contests this season. Six times, the Red Foxes have had a rebounding margin of minus-12 or worse. CONSISTENCY OFF THE BENCH: Freshman C Connor McClenaghan has come off the bench to score at least five points in four of his last six games. McClenaghan s career high in scoring in six points, which he accomplished at Manhattan on Dec. 7 and against Saint Joseph s on Dec. 20. Against Manhattan, McClenaghan was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Mc- Clenaghan has only played more than 18 minutes once this season. Khallid Hart led four Marist double-digit scorers with a game-high 15 points. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 13-0 lead and held the Stags scoreless for the first 8:30. Marist shot 32-for-40 from the free-throw line AT VMI: Marist had four doubledigit scorers at VMI: junior C Eric Truog (26), freshman G James Griffin (13), senior F Manny Thomas (12) and junior F Phillip Lawrence (11). FRESHMEN MINUTES: In Marist s four games that senior G/F Chavaughn Lewis either missed entirely or most of, players in their first year of eligibility (Nick Colletta, James Griffin, K.J. Lee, Connor McClenaghan and Obi Momah) accounted for 431 of the team s 800 minutes played (53.9 percent). ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman G K.J. Lee was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 15. Lee averaged 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in Marist s two games. He scored a career-high 15 points at Penn on Dec. 9, and had a career-high eight rebounds at VMI on Dec. 13. It was the first honor of Lee s career, and the first weekly honor for by a Red Fox this season. MONSTER GAME FOR TRUOG: Junior C Eric Truog set career highs for points (26), rebounds (13) and steals (two) at VMI on Dec. 13. He more than doubled his previous career highs in points (12) and rebounds (six). Truog shot 10-for-15 from the field and 3-for- 3 from three-point range. Prior to this game, Truog was 1-for-12 on threepointers in his career. CAREER HIGHS ON THE BOARDS: Three Red Foxes had career highs in rebounds at VMI on Dec. 13: junior center Eric Truog (13), junior forward Phillip Lawrence (eight) and freshman point guard K.J. CAREER NIGHT FOR TRUOG: Junior C Eric Truog scored a then career-high 12 points at Boston College on Dec. 1, shooting 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the foul line. TOPPING 30: Red-shirt sophomore G Khallid Hart scored a career-high 33 at Bucknell on Nov. 14. It was the first 30-point game by a Red Fox since Jay Bowie had 31 vs. Niagara on Feb. 1, 2014, and the highest single-game total by a Red Fox since Sam Prescott scored 34 vs. Iona on Feb. 13, RETURNING PRODUCTION: From last season, Marist returns 64.3 percent of its scoring, 57.0 percent of its rebounding, 77.5 percent of its assists, and 63.7 percent of its minutes played. The Red Foxes return three of their five starters, and eight total letterwinners from last year s team. PRESEASON PICKS: Marist was chosen to finish eighth in the MAAC preseason poll. Senior G/F Injuries Red-shirt sophomore G Khallid Hart suffered a left foot injury against Army on Nov. 22. Senior G T.J. Curry suffered a right (shooting) hand injury at Bucknell on Nov. 14. Both may be able to return by mid-january. Chavaughn Lewis and red-shirt sophomore G Khallid Hart were named Preseason Second Team All-MAAC. WHO S NEW: Marist has five true freshmen this year: F R.J. Coil, G James Griffin, G K.J. Lee, C/F Connor McClenaghan and F Obi Momah. Griffin made his first career start against Army on Nov. 22, with Lee and McClenaghan making their collegiate debuts in that same contest. Momah played his first game at Manhattan on Dec. 7. PRODUCTIVE FIRST SEASON: Red-shirt sophomore G Khallid Hart was the first player in program history to be named outright MAAC Rookie of the Year last season. Hart scored 457 points in the season. That total was just three points shy of Marist s freshman scoring record, held by Chavaughn Lewis. THIS YEAR S STAFF: Assistant coach Paul Lee is in his seventh season on staff, and has now served under three different head coaches at Marist. Assistant coaches Andy Johnston and C.J. Lee, as well as director of operations Scott Day, are all in their first season at Marist. BIG LOSSES: Marist has lost two starters from last year s team in C Adam Kemp and F Jay Bowie. Kemp finished third in program history in rebounds (825) and blocked shots (225). He is currently playing professionally in Macedonia. Bowie was one of just two players in program history to fnish his career shooting over 40 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. The other was Andy Lake, who played at Marist from and is the Red Foxes 10th all-time leading scorer. Bowie played briefly for the Delaware 87ers of the NBA D-League.
