Ferraro serves as the primary contact for Marist s football, men s basketball and baseball teams. Additionally, he has provided color analysis on Marist football broadcasts since Ferraro served as the department s Interim Sports Information Director for the season. In the year, Ferraro served as Assistant Sports Information Director at Marist. He was the primary contact for the women s basketball team, which advanced to the Sweet 16. Additionally, he was the contact for the men s and women s lacrosse, men s and women s tennis and men s and women s crew teams. From , Ferraro was the play-by-play voice of the Marist women s basketball team. He also worked five years for the Poughkeepsie Journal as a sports writer and copy editor. Ferraro received his Bachelor s in Communications from Marist in He graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Core/Liberal Studies. He served as Sports Editor of The Circle, Marist s student newspaper, and was also Assistant Sports Director of campus radio station WMCR. Ferraro resides in New Paltz. Since joining the conference in the season, the Red Foxes have advanced to the semifinals five times, but have never reached the final. 4 Chuck Martin First Season Career Record: 9-22 Monmouth/1993 On April 17, 2008, Chuck Martin was hired as the sixth head coach in Marist's Division I history. He arrives in Poughkeepsie having had the opportunity to work for some of the premier coaches in the game while recruiting and coaching high-level talent. Martin comes to Poughkeepsie after having spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. The Tigers reached the national championship game in the season, and set a single-season Division I record for most victories with 38. Martin helped to recruit and develop freshman point guard Derrick Rose, who was selected first overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. Two more Memphis players - Joey Dorsey and Chris Douglas-Roberts - were also chosen in the draft. In the campaign, Memphis went 33-4 and reached the Elite Eight. The Tigers also became the first team in the history of Conference USA to compile a perfect regular season while winning the conference tournament, a feat which was duplicated this past season. A native of the Bronx, Martin has served as a Division I assistant coach at five institutions. Prior to his time at Memphis, Martin was an assistant coach at St. John's University from There, he played an integral role in helping upgrade the Red Storm's talent base. In January of 2006 campaign, St. John's recorded victories over two nationally-ranked opponents - then-undefeated Pittsburgh and Louisville - within a span of five days. Before heading to St. John's, Martin spent three years at Drexel University, where he worked under James "Bruiser" Flint. The Dragons reached the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game in 2003, and earned postseason National Invitation Tournament berths in 2003 and Drexel compiled a record of in regular-season Colonial games in Martin's three years at the Philadelphia school. There, he helped develop current Marist assistant coach Bashir Mason, who became the first player in Colonial history to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman. Martin also coached under Flint for one season at the University of Massachusetts, which came in the season. That year, the Minutemen reached the Atlantic-10 Tournament championship game. He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Manhattan College during the season. Before embarking on his college coaching career, Martin served as camp director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. This experience enabled him to establish strong relationships on the East Coast with several of the top high schools, prep schools and AAU coaches. He also worked as an assistant coach at national powers St. Raymond's and LaSalle Academy in New York. Martin was an assistant at LaSalle from , when he worked with future NBA players Ron Artest and Shamgod Wells. In his time at St. Raymond's, Martin tutored former NBA center Ernest Brown and All-America and Virginia standout Majestic Mapp. Martin, who played at St. Raymond's for three years, was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in Martin began his college playing career at Champlain Junior College in Vermont, where he captained a pair of NJCAA tournament teams. He played his final two seasons at Monmouth University, where he played point guard and averaged 7.1 points per game. Martin is a 1993 graduate of Monmouth with a bachelor's degree in Communications. He and his wife, Lee, have three children -- a daughter, Ashley-Monet (11), and two sons, Jordan (6) and Justin (3).

5 Paul Lee Assistant Coach First Season Columbia/1986 Paul Lee, who is rated among the top assistant coaches in the country by Basketball Times, is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Red Foxes. Prior to his arrival in Poughkeepsie, Lee spent eight seasons as an assistant coach for Northwestern. He also has 10 years of experience as an assistant at Columbia University his alma mater including the last six as the Lions top assistant and recruiting coordinator. Lee played for the Lions from and was a captain in his senior year. He received the Walter H. Bernson Memorial Trophy, given to the Columbia basketball player who exemplifies spirit, hustle and determination. He graduated from Columbia in 1986 with a degree in American history. Bashir Mason Assistant Coach First Season Drexel/2007 Bashir Mason is in his first season as an assistant to Chuck Martin at Marist. Mason is a 2007 graduate of Drexel University who was a four-year starter for the Dragons at point guard. He was a four-time member of the Colonial Athletic Association All-Defensive Team. In 2004, he became the first player in the history of the CAA to be named Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman - a season in which Martin was on Drexel s staff as an assistant. Mason led Drexel in assists and steals in all four of his seasons at the Philadelphia-based school. He graduated in second place on the school s all-time steals list with 226, and third on its all-time assists list with 471. In his career, Mason scored 1,126 career points. He was also named to the 2006 NIT Season Tip-Off All-Tournament Team. Ty Weeks Assistant Coach First Season UMass/1997 Will Lanier Director of Basketball Operations First Season Georgia Tech/2004 Ty Weeks is in his first season as assistant coach for the Red Foxes. Weeks spent this prior season working alongside Chuck Martin on Memphis basketball staff, serving as the program s Coordinator of Basketball Operations. In this role, the Philadelphia, Pa., native oversaw the operations side of the program, including coordinating recruits on-campus visits, monitoring student-athletes academic progress, updating the recruiting database and assisting with travel plans. Prior to that, Weeks had spent two years in private business. Weeks also served as an assistant at Rhode Island from and St. Bonaventure from During his time in Kingston, R.I., Weeks worked under head coach Jim Baron, and his primary responsibilities were working with the squad s big men, overseeing the strength and conditioning program and assisting with recruiting. Will Lanier is in his first season as Director of Men s Basketball Operations on Chuck Martin s staff. Lanier spent the previous four seasons on the staff of St. John s University in the Big East Conference. He served the previous two seasons full-time on staff after working as a graduate assistant from His responsibilities at St. John s included the coordination and editing of game film, scouting video, coordinating team travel and assisting with all day-to-day operations. Lanier also served as Co-Director of the Norm Roberts Summer Basketball Camp, where he played an integral role in having enrollment more than double from under 300 in 2005 to over 600 in The number reached over 700 in Lanier also ran St. John s Team Camp, which hosted 32 local high school teams. While at St. John s, he received his master s degree in school building leadership in the school of education. 5

STOP AT 50: The victory over Iona on Dec. 5 marked the ninth time Marist held a conference opponent to 50 points or fewer in a game since joining the MAAC for the season. Head Coach Chuck Martin was hired on April 17, 2008 as the program s sixth head coach in its Division I history. Marist also has an entirely new coaching staff, consisting of assistants Paul Lee, Tyrone Weeks, Bashir Mason and director of men s basketball operations Will Lanier. LOTS TO REPLACE: The 10 players the Red Foxes lost from their team combined for 70 percent of the team s points, 66 percent of the team s rebounds, 71 percent of the team s three-pointers made, 72 percent of the team s starts and 65 percent of the minutes played last season. ONLY NEW FACE IN THE MAAC: Head Coach Chuck Martin is the lone newcomer among MAAC head coaches this season. AN EXPERIENCED STAFF: New Head Coach Chuck Martin has assembled a coaching staff with considerable experience. MEDIA MAN: Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider spent this past summer interning at WFAN (660 AM) in New York City. Schneider has also gained broadcasting experience through Marist s campus radio station (WMAR), where he hosts a sports-talk show and has called women s basketball games. He has provided color analysis for Marist women s basketball broadcasts at the MAAC Tournament each of the last two seasons. Eight athletes - six from Marist and two with local ties from MAAC schools - were named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams on Monday. On the women's side, Marist's Rachele Fitz and Julianne Viani were named to the first team after lifting the Red Foxes (26-3 overall) to a sixth consecutive MAAC regular-season crown. $2 Million in Scholarships for Working Parents Going Back to School Educators No. 1 Online Graduate School Program By being chosen for the first team, both are finalists for the MAAC Player of the Year honor, which will be announced on Thursday along with the coaches, sixth players, rookies and defensive players of the year for MAAC men's and women's basketball. Fitz is the reigning MAAC Player of the Year and was the Preseason MAAC Player of the Year. She is a six-time winner of the MAAC Player of the Week award this season and is Marist's all-time leading scorer with 1,765 points. Leading The League The junior forward leads the conference by averaging 20.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. She also is tops in the MAAC with a field goal percentage of 60.3 percent. Viani is fourth in the conference, averaging 14.9 points per contest. She leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage at 88.6 percent. The senior from Poughkeepsie and a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School is second in assist-turnover ratio at 2.0 and third in assists at 4.5 per contest. The women, seeded first, will play the winner of Thursday's game between Loyola and Manhattan in a quarterfinal at 1:30 p.m. The men, seeded 10th, will compete in the final game of the evening against seventh seed Iona. Schneider is the seventh student-athlete and third men's basketball player in school history to be named an Academic All-American. This season, Schneider leads the Red Foxes by averaging 16.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He has drained 78 three-pointers this season, and is 30th in the country in free-throw percentage at.860. Schneider is also ranked in the top 10 of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in seven statistical categories. In the process, the Red Foxes set a program record, as the 35 points the Hawks scored marked the lowest Marist has ever given up to a Division I opponent. Red-shirt sophomore guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points. Goodwin drained a career-high six three-point attempts in 10 opportunities and also had three steals. Freshman guard R.J. Hall (Bloomfield, N.J.) gave the Red Foxes two scorers in double digits, as he came off the bench to add 10 in 19 minutes, including a pair of three-pointers. With 10:05 left in the first half, a three-pointer by Hartford's Morgan Sabia gave the Hawks a lead. However, the Red Foxes held the Hawks without a field goal the remainder of the first half as they took a halftime lead. I mean, I would sit in my room and do impersonations of him all the time. When I was young, it was something I always wanted to do. My parents bought me a little tape recorder, and I would turn down the volume on my PlayStation 2, my Super Nintendo, and do the play by play for my video games, Knicks games, everything. It seemed, aside from playing, the coolest job in the world. That kid is now 22 and he is living in the best of both worlds. Schneider often pulls a rare double shift as a playerbroadcaster. As a 6-foot-7 fifth-year senior forward for Marist College, he is having a breakout season. And when his playing schedule permits, he serves on the broadcasting teams for Marist women s games on radio, TV and the Internet. A communications major, he has done play by play, color commentary and sideline work for the women s games. On the court, Schneider said, he has regained some confidence under the new Marist men s coach, Chuck Martin. He is averaging 16.4 points and 9.0 rebounds while starting every game for the Red Foxes, who are Martin said Schneider s influence went beyond his statistics. The Red Foxes led wire-to-wire as they improved to 3-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while handing the Purple Eagles their first conference loss. Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) notched his second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore forward Lawrence Williams (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes off the bench. Red-shirt senior guard Kaylen Gregory (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) finished with nine points, six rebounds and three assists, and redshirt junior guard Javon Parris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had nine points and three rebounds. Three-pointers on successive possessions by red-shirt sophomore guard Dejuan Goodwin (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) staked Marist to a 6-1 lead just 1:29 into the contest. Goodwin's basket with 13:41 left in the first half also started the Red Foxes on a 16-3 run over the next 5:55, expanding Marist's lead to 17. The Red Foxes never led by less than 13 the rest of the way. Marist took a 19-point lead into the locker room. The Red Foxes shot 7-for-11 from three-point range in the first half, while the Purple Eagles were 5-for-26 (19.2 percent) from the field and 0-for-11 from three-point range. David Devezin scored a career-high 23 points against Niagara Men's Basketball Home A pair of free throws by Niagara's Tyrone Lewis with 13:05 remaining made the score Marist, but the Purple Eagles never got closer than 14 points in the second half. From that point, Marist went on a 13-3 run to reach its largest lead of the game - 24, with 9:34 remaining. Marist shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field, 66.7 percent (10-for-15) from three-point range and 77.4 percent (24-for-31) from the free-throw line. Niagara shot just 30.4 percent (17-for-56) from the field in the game. Tyrone Lewis led Niagara with 17 points, also finishing with six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Lewis shot just 2-for-13 from the field, but was 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Bilal Benn added 13 points and nine rebounds. The Purple Eagles are now 13-4 overall and 4-1 in MAAC play. Schneider scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds against Delaware. His rebounding total was the most ever by a visiting player in the Bob Carpenter Center at Delaware. Schneider followed that up by scoring a new career-high of 29 points to go along with nine rebounds against Bucknell. Schneider's 29 points were the most by a Red Fox since Will Whittington scored 31 in Marist's National Invitation Tournament win over Oklahoma State two seasons ago. Schneider is the first Red Fox to be named Player of the Week in the calendar year of the last Fox to win it was Spongy Benjamin the the first week of the season. "I thought Ryan had performed well a number of times where he definitely should have been honored," Marist coach Chuck Martin said. "I'm happy for him. He's definitely working his tail off." It's a lot to ask a young guy to be a leader on the floor, but R.J's a naturallyborn leader. It's not out of character for him." "R.J. has worked extremely hard and had some good games," Martin said. The Red Foxes (5-8) will close out the 2008 portion of their non-conference schedule today when they face Binghamton of the America East Conference for a 7 p.m. tilt at the Events Center in Vestal. The meeting is the first between the Red Foxes and Bearcats. The Bearcats are led by reigning America East Player of the Week, junior forward D.J. Rivera, who is averaging 21.1 points per game. Junior guard Malik Alvin averages 12.4 points per game in seven games and senior guard Dwayne Jackson averages 12.2 ppg, mostly off the bench. 67 Varsity Page 1 of 2 3/3/2009 The coaching domino effect Dozens of lives impacted when coaches change jobs By Ken McMillan Times Herald-Record December 21, 2008 In the world of college basketball, when a coach decides to leave one school to work at another, it's never as simple as a one-for-one swap. It sets in motion a chain of events where dozens of lives are uplifted and tough choices must be made. Matt Brady made it clear upon his arrival at Marist College in the Spring of 2005 that he intended to turn the Red Foxes' men's team into a winner and then pursue opportunities at larger schools or conferences. True to his word, Brady delivered Marist into the National Invitation Tournament in 2007 and started to field queries from interested schools. There were initial overtures from St. Bonaventure and Quinnipiac during his first look-see, and this past spring he decided that James Madison University in the Colonial Athletic Association would be a good step up his professional ladder. So in March Brady left Poughkeepsie for Harrisonburg, Va., taking along with him his entire assistant coaching staff: Rob O'Driscoll, Orlando Ranson and Corey Stitzel. Chuck Martin was in the midst of a run to the national finals by Memphis University while he was courted by Marist. The deafening noise from the Final Four was still ringing in his ears when he met with athletic director Tim Murray, and, like Brady before him, the nine-year assistant at five different schools decided to make Marist the first stop in his head-coaching career. Martin, too, turned to trusted associates and acquaintances to fill the coaching positions at Marist. He called upon longtime assistant Paul Lee, who left Northwestern from the Big 10 Conference in order to return closer to his Metropolitan New York roots. Martin took fellow Memphis assistant Tyrone Weekes with him. Will Lanier worked with Martin at St. John's and was asked to come aboard. Bashir Mason was recruited by Martin when he worked at Drexel and Martin promised then the pair would be friends for life, so Mason left his prep coaching job to give college coaching a try. "It's an exciting phenomenon, how it works,'' Martin said. "(One coach leaves) and five jobs open up. It's fascinating how this effect just takes place and gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and how all of us are really connected.'' Players, too, had to make choices. All-star guard Jay Gavin had decided before Martin arrived that he planned to leave Marist after just one season, and the new coach could not dissuade him Gavin decided to enroll at Virginia Commonwealth. Jeremiah Bowman also did not want to stick around Marist with the new staff and moved on. Brady and Martin were each faced with the daunting task of adding players before the late signing period closed the situation was especially dire at Marist since Martin had only six available players on his roster. Making matters more difficult was losing the commitment of Andrey Semenov, who changed his mind about attending Marist and followed Brady to James Madison. Brady's staff was able to bring in four newcomers, three of whom are making substantial contributions to the Dukes' 6-4 start. Martin's contingent landed a promising junior-college transfer, three freshmen and also a Big East transfer for next season. Not a single one of those players had James Madison or Marist on his radar before the new coaching regimes took over. This is Martin's sixth coaching job this decade, so he knows all about uprooting a family Martin has a wife, Lee, and three children, ages 11, 6 and 3. "That's hard, man,'' Martin said. "To be completely honest, it's more difficult on my wife than me. When you make the transition and go from job to job, the families are the ones that keep the pieces together. Furniture, packing, selling a house, buying a house, doctors, schools. It was really difficult, but thank God my wife has been great and this is not the first time we've done this. She has become a veteran at this thing.'' Paul Lee has a wife and three kids whom he moved from the Chicago suburbs. After spending several months apart during the transition, Beth Lee made the decision on the school district, and together they settled on a house, though they are waiting a bit to get a better deal during the housing downturn. The Lees were fortunate to have been renting a house in Chicagoland, but Martin is still trying to unload his house in Tennessee. Lee had a choice to stay at Northwestern or go to Marist. The decision is not always in the hands of assistant coaches, though. "It's funny,'' O'Driscoll said. "When you get into the business of coaching I think you pretty much understand that if you are working for a coach, you are pretty much at your head coach's leisure.'' Job security was not an issue because Brady, and Iona's Jeff Ruland in his previous job, both assured O'Driscoll that they would take him to whatever school they wound up. Four Red Foxes scored in double digits, paced by red-shirt junior point guard David Devezin (Houston, Texas), who had 18 points. The Red Foxes led at the half before outscoring the Colonials by a margin in the second half. After a basket by Robert Morris' Mezie Nwigwe tied the score at 37 apiece with 15:38 to play, Marist held the Colonials scoreless for the next 6:12. In that time, Mairst went on a 9-0 run and never led by eight the rest of the way. Devezin scored 13 of his points in the second half, shooting 5-for-5 from the field after the intermission. He scored nine points in the final seven minutes of the game as the Red Foxes expanded their lead. After shooting 33 percent from the field through their first two games, Mairst shot 50 percent (24-for-48) against Robert Morris, including 52.2 percent (12-for-23) in the second half. Marist drained 10 of its 18 three-point attempts (55.6 percent) and 14 of its 18 free-throw attempts (77.8 percent). Photo provided by Marist Times Herald-Record November 10, 2008 POUGHKEEPSIE When you talk to Chuck Martin about a return to his roots, you can almost hear Billy Joel singing in the background, "I'm in a New York State of Mind.'' Martin's new home is Poughkeepsie and his new job is coach of the Marist College men's basketball team, but when Martin talks about New York, it's the Big Apple on his mind, and a passion for the city that never escaped him. Almost seven months on the job with the Red Foxes, Martin has made his return to the same playgrounds and school courts that he played on as a kid, hoping to find a few gems who can invigorate a Marist program that will surely struggle this season. "I went recruiting two weeks ago,'' Martin said last Wednesday, "and I took the subway and got a Metro Card, so I got the New York city frame of mind. I took the train from 125th Street to 86th Street and then downtown, and made my way around the city recruiting.'' It wasn't hard to detect the glee on his face and joy in his heart. "New York is home for me,'' Martin said. In no particular order, Martin waxes poetic about his passion for the Yankees, visiting Central Park, touring the Village, dining downtown with his wife and visiting Harlem. Then reality crept in to ruin the moment. "Man, this place is expensive,'' Martin said with a laugh. Martin said he would be lying if he claimed he didn't miss life in Memphis, with his friends, the affordable cost of living and a basketball team still stocked with talent from the Tigers' run to last season's national title game. He was happy working on John Calipari's staff, but he also knew it was time to branch out and give head coaching a try. "I was ready," Martin said, the last seven months on the job confirming his suspicions. "In your heart, everything you learned in 10 years, you were prepared for this opportunity. You feel comfortable in your own skin, running practice or being in a meeting with your staff or addressing all 13 players and you know you have their attention. You sense it. You know it.'' His long ties to New York basketball circles through his coaching tenure as an assistant at Drexel, Massachusetts, St. John's, Manhattan and Memphis enabled him to sign talented freshman Dorvell Carter from Rice High School, and convince Brooklyn product Javon Parris to transfer to Marist. Martin knows he has a cachet that comes along with reaching the NCAA tourney final, but he realizes there is a shelf life that accompanies it. "You can try to use Memphis and the Final Four we have some people excited about that, and we have gotten involved with some really good players because of that,'' Martin said. "You can milk it maybe another month or two, but once you coach a game at Marist the reality of that goes by the wayside. You have to create your own niche.'' Martin has gained the respect of his players and helped boost the collective ego of a club decimated by personnel losses and picked to finish last in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. "The fact that he's able to bring this increased energy and excitement every day to practice three weeks in, that's a real credit to him and the staff that he has brought in and what they've been able to do with us as players,'' said Marist senior Ryan Schneider. "I haven't played a game for him yet if the season was to end now, my experience with coach Martin has been my best coach ever,'' said Marist transfer Javon Parris. "The last guy on the team feels just as confident as the first guy on the team. I don't think that's the player... that is coach Martin.'' On Friday, the Chuck Martin era officially begins when the Red Foxes visit Rutgers. "I'm ready,'' Martin said. Chuck Martin still hasn't decided what to do after work tonight, but he has a couple of options in mind. Marist College's new men's basketball coach could spend a quiet evening at home watching television with the wife and kids, or he might take a trip into the city and see a few familiar faces. Either way, Martin, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for John Calipari at Memphis, is planning on watching the NBA draft, where three of his former Tigers are predicted to hear their names called tonight. "I'm thinking I may watch it at home," Martin said on Tuesday, "but I've been in touch with Derrick (Rose) and his family, I may get down to the actual draft itself." Rose, a point guard who is leaving Memphis after his freshman season, is predicted by most draft Web sites as the first overall pick by the Chicago Bulls, or at least follow Kansas State forward Michael Beasley as the second pick by the Miami Heat. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey, who just completed their junior and senior seasons at Memphis, respectively, also expect to be taken in tonight's draft. The Tigers trio led Memphis to the NCAA championship game this season, losing to Kansas, Still, Martin said his interest in the proceedings at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden tonight extends further than your average coach/player relationship. "I spent two years with those guys, and it was really neat because they embraced me from day one. If they had not embraced me then, you know, I would be happy for them, but there's no relationship there," he said. "You knew that, whether we were going to be together for two years, four years, 10 years, we were going to be a family for the rest - there was a bond." Even with as much talent as three potential NBA draft picks offer a college team, Martin said it was that close-knit feeling shared throughout the team, established by head coach Calipari, that helped Memphis to 38 wins in "As talented as we were last year, as deep as we were, we would not have gone as far and won as many games if it wasn't for that chemistry," Martin said. "That's something we will definitely do here at Marist, create that chemistry." Former Memphis point guard Derrick Rose answers questions regarding the NBA draft on Wednesday.
