1 Next week Meet the Trojans new tennis coach Avalanche Page 5B Jordan Valley girls fall at State B SECTION, 8 PAGES. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2006 SCOREBOARD, 6-7B. King Jeremy conquers all s Ensley crowns career with fourth state title in wrestling; Trojans earn fourth place Jeremy Ensley solidified his place as one of the greatest wrestlers in High School history during the weekend, collecting his fourth state championship. He s kind of become the poster boy for Western Idaho wrestling lately, ninth-year coach Toby Johnson said. And that kind of puts us on the map a little more than we have been. With a pin of Michael Ryan from Kellogg in the sixth minute of the 119-pound championship match, Ensley became the first Trojan to win four titles. At the time, he was only the 13th wrestler in Idaho history to win four crowns. He s one of those guys that people are going to look up to for years, by all these little guys who want to be wrestlers, coach Toby Johnson said. A 14 th wrestler was added to the list when Shawn Jones of Salmon River won the 130- pound crown for his fourth state championship. As expected, the top-seeded Ensley had little trouble moving through his bracket at Holt Arena in Pocatello. The no-nonsense senior ended his prep career with 120 consecutive victories and a career record of He also finished his career with a school-record 100 pins. And his powerhouse performance on the Idaho State University campus guided the Trojans to their third fourth-place to page 2B State champs collide Four-time High School state champion Jeremy Ensley dominates Melba wrestler Kyle Johnshoy on the way to a technical fall in a dual meet earlier this season. Looking at it, we did great, coach Toby Johnson said. I m really not disappointed. Looking at it, Weiser and Bonners Ferry just had too many guys getting into the final that we couldn t stop. While Ensley won his fourth crown, Christoffersen returned to the top of the podium after pinning Kelly Miller of Priest River at the 3 minute, 47-second mark of their 145-pound championship match. When (Christoffersen) hit those semifinals, he turned it up, Johnson said. He was fantastic in the semis with a flawless performance. And he was nearflawless in the final. It was the second title of the We were there and we were very close, and I m not disappointed in the kids at all. There s no shame in bringing home a state trophy. senior s career. He won the 119-pound 2A state title as a sophomore. It s not every day you get a state champion, and to get two of them is pretty great, Johnson said. And having them be multiple-winners; that s icing on the cake. now has 22 individual state championships dating to 1966 when Steve Higgins (106) and Dick Watson (136) won gold. American Falls dethroned Weiser as team state champion. The Wolverines had won two straight team titles before the Beavers beat Weiser by 41 points in the three-day tournament at Holt Arena on the Idaho State University campus. The Wolverines had hung banners in Toby Johnson wrestling coach 2004 and placed three wrestlers in championship matches and had six state placers while piling up 142½ points. It was the third time in four seasons that had finished fourth in the team competition. The six state placers are the second-most in school history behind seven state medalists each from the 1999 and 2004 teams. Johnson conceded that the outcome could have been different had Bryan Martinat not had his season halted by a broken leg in the 3A District III 152-pound championship match. He was a state runner-up at 140 pounds as a sophomore in the 2005 tourney. to page 2B

2 Page 2B Wednesday, March 1, 2006 Wrestling We keep coming back to the Martinat thing, the coach said. Had we had Martinat in there and he made it to the finals, we would have been a contender for second. Three Trojans reached their weight division s championship matches this year, tying the school mark held by the squads from 1988, 2001 and last year. The other Trojan to reach a title match this year was 215-pounder Josh Jolley. The junior met Kory Pratt from Weiser in the final and was pinned in 5:23. In all, had six wrestlers place: Ensley, Christoffersen, Jolley, Stuart Miyasako (fourth place, 130), Tyler Maxwell (fifth place, 160) and Amador Cortinas (fifth place, 275). My kids wrestled great, Johnson said. Ricco Gonzalez (171) came through with a bunch of pins for us. Jolley and our two champs lived up to their seeds, and Miyasako did. We were there and we were very close, and I m not disappointed with the kids at all. There s no shame in bringing home a state trophy. Jolley reached the championship final with a 3-minute, 25-second pin of Salmon s Tysten Porter. Miyasako, a senior, earned a fourth-place medal at 130 pounds but not before throwing a scare into Snake River s Shawn Jones, who would win his fourth individual title. Miyasako made Jones work for his 6-5 victory in the semifinals. In fact, Johnson says, Miyasako was very close to ending Jones bid to be the 14 th four-time state champ in state history. Stuart took him down in the second round to close the gap to one, Johnson said. That s a match that Stuart and the rest of us are going to remember for the rest of our lives. Maxwell narrowly defeated Logan Sheldon of St. Maries, 7-5, for fifth-place at 160, while the sophomore Cortinas collected a 15-3 major decision over Steven Frank of Kellogg in the 275 fifthplace match. Six wrestlers (Ensley, Miyasako, Christoffersen, Maxwell, Jolley and Cortinas) reached the semifinals of their respective weight classes. Only three of those wrestlers (Ensley, Miyasako and Christoffersen) are seniors. Eight of the 11 wrestlers at the state tournament won their first-round matches. Marsing Michael Tuckness became the first Marsing wrestler in seven years to bring home a medal from the state tournament, placing fifth at 189 pounds. It s the highest finish for a Husky since Tom Capouch was sixth in Tuckness, a junior, won fifth place by forfeit over Jerahmey Hess from Aberdeen. Tuckness and freshman Michael Moore (140 pounds) both picked up first-round wins Thursday. Moore decisioned Jamie McGreal of Potlatch, 6-4, while Tuckness pinned Prairie s Logan Lustig in 5:34. Both lost in the quarterfinals Friday. Marsing s other two wrestlers (130-pound sophomore Chaz Covey and 135-pound sophomore Kris Young) lost first-round matches. Tuckness rebounded to begin his march to fifth place with consolation-bracket wins over Parma s Mark Finley (9-2) and Firth s John Tucker (pin in 90 seconds) before losing a 7-3 decision to Vince Ghormley from team champion North Fremont in the consolation semifinals. Ensley team finish in the past four state tournaments. But what may have been more impressive is the physical pain Ensley endured while marching to another title. Johnson revealed for the first time late Sunday night that there was more to the senior s physical ailments than a sprained right ankle and a banged-up right knee. At least since the 3A Snake River Valley conference dual meet against Fruitland on Jan. 19, Ensley has endured the pain of a torn meniscus and dislocated knee cap on the right leg and a possible broken left knee cap. It kind of blows my mind he was able to wrestle with that, Johnson said. Ensley became the first wrestler since Eagle s Vance Beeson to sweep titles through his career. Beeson did it in the 5A ranks from 2002 to The Idaho High School Activities Association has said it will apply an asterisk to Ensley s record because he achieved his first two titles as a 2A wrestler. It doesn t make a bit a difference, Johnson said of wrestling in two different divisions. It makes no difference whatsoever. Four is four. It doesn t take anything away from the kid. But there s no need to put an asterisk on the rest of Ensley s career. He rarely had a challenge through his high school days. Ensley lost just three times as a freshman, including a 5-0 decision to T.J. Solomon from Marsh Valley. Ensley missed his chance to avenge that loss when the second-seeded Solomon was beaten by Ryan in a tight 3-1 semifinal decision. The other two opponents were from out-of-state schools, Johnson said. If he were to go back and wrestle those same guys again that he lost to, he d beat them, Johnson said. No doubt. The son of pound champion Dan Ensley, who wrestled at Nampa, Jeremy Ensley won championships in three different weight classes (103, 2003; 112, 2004 and the last two years at 119). Before entering a class by himself, he shared a distinction with Rudy Rodriguez (1979, ) and Ryan Nash ( ) as the only Trojans to win three state titles. After capturing his fourth District III title on Feb. 18 at Weiser High School, Ensley had said he expected to pin his way through the state bracket until the championship match. That statement would mark one of the few times Ensley would make a wrong move in his career. Ensley did sail through Thursday s first-round match, putting Levi Paschal from Salmon on his back in 41 minutes. The senior didn t have much wrestling records Multiple state championships 4 Jeremy Ensley ( ) 3 Ryan Nash ( ) 3 Rudy Rodriguez (1979, ) 2 Ron Hooker ( ) 2 Steve Nash ( ) 2 Steve Higgins (1966, 1968) 2 Tyler Christoffersen (2004, 2006) Career victories 1. Ensley (Class of 2006), Christoffersen (Class of 2006), Duryee (Class of 2001), R. Nash (Class of 1988), Hooker (Class of 1988), 102 Career winning percentage 1. Ensley,.978 (131-3) 2. R. Nash,.937 (105-7) 3. Hooker,.871 (102-15) 4. Duryee,.835 (117-23) 5. Christoffersen, (.783), trouble with his quarterfinal opponent, Tyson Ward of Bear Lake. But the top-rated 119-pound wrestler in the state didn t get a pin, settling instead for a 15-0 technical fall. He had him on his back several times, Johnson said. In my mind, a tech and a pin are almost synonymous. To tech a guy like he did in 2½ minutes that s a pretty sound defeat. Ensley reached the championship match by pinning another Salmon wrestler, Justin Olson, in 3:58 in s semifinals. Ensley has said he s still figuring out his options after high school, but his legacy at is beyond debate. Johnson puts him in a class that includes Nash, who won three consecutive state championships in the mid-1980s and finished second at state as a freshman in You re talking about two absolutely amazing wrestlers, Johnson said. It s so close. And Johnson insists that Ensley has to be considered as one of the greatest athletes to walk the halls at. You ve got a few superstar athletes who have come from Ryan Nash and Jessica Zatica. And Jeremy is right up there with the best.

3 Wednesday, March 1, 2006 Page 3B NC overruns Marsing in district elimination game Road block Marsing High School senior wing Ernie Villa fi nds his path to the basket obstructed by Nampa Christian junior post Donnie Heida during last week s 2A District III Tournament elimination game at Middleton High School. Playing the last basketball game of his career, Villa scored two points on 1-for-4 shooting. The Nampa Christian High School boys basketball team seemed to catch Marsing flatfooted in a Feb. 21 elimination game for the 2A District III Tournament. The Trojans ended the Huskies season with speed and a stifling pressure defense to fuel a victory at Middleton High School. I don t know why we were flat-footed, Marsing coach Brian Thompson said. There should have been some excitement. I thought we were ready to take the next step. Marsing ended the season with a 7-15 record. Nampa Christian s season ended later in the week when New Plymouth beat the Trojans for the second state tournament berth out of District III. With Geoff Buckendorf scoring 11 of his game-high 19 points in the first 16 minutes, Nampa Christian grabbed a commanding halftime lead. The Trojans shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half (15-for-30) and seemed to get to every loose ball. Nampa Christian also dodged several situations in which the Trojans tried to shoot themselves in the foot with wild, freewheeling passes. We were just fortunate to be getting some of those, Nampa Christian coach Willie Taylor said. But the Trojans didn t use luck to get key rebounds or force crucial turnovers. Nampa Christian s athletes clearly had a step or two or three on their Marsing counterparts, especially in the first half when the Huskies hit only six of 27 field-goal attempts and were equally cold from the free-throw line (9-for- 19). Actually in the first half, we weren t aggressive and we weren t moving on offense, Thompson said. That was the ballgame. It seemed like we were dead in the first half. Nampa Christian ended the first quarter on a 9-0 run highlighted by an up-tempo game that the Huskies couldn t counter. Ten of the Trojans first 15 points were scored on layups many sparked by Marsing turnovers triggered by the Trojans press and Nampa Christian went on runs of 8-2 and 10-1 in the second quarter to effectively put the game out of reach. They took it to us, and we couldn t do anything, Thompson said. Marsing got as close as 11 points, 39-28, when Aaron Salvas drained two free throws two minutes into the third quarter, but the Huskies couldn t do much damage despite getting into the free-throw bonus early in the second half. The Huskies were 8-for-16 from the foul line in the second half, but missed four of their first six attempts in that span. Marsing hit only 17 of 35 charity shots in the game. Marsing couldn t take advantage of its rebounding edge, either. The Huskies outboarded Nampa Christian 47-21, but couldn t overcome the foul shooting or an 18-for-58 (31 percent) showing from the floor. They re a good rebounding team, Taylor said. We felt fortunate (to win). If they were making their free throws, that would have hurt. Shea McClellin led Marsing with 23 points, and he snagged 16 rebounds for another doubledouble. Salvas scored nine points, and Jon Cossel came off the bench with a strong seven points and 7-for-8 showing from the freethrow line. The kids made a great effort, and I appreciate everything they ve done, Thompson said. It s too bad it couldn t end on a happy note. superintendent helps out with early Trojans tennis practice Maybe it s something folks witness in smaller school districts with regularity, but when Tim Rosandick showed up a High School tennis practice Friday it certainly was a first for him. I have an interest in working with kids and I enjoy tennis, and I think I might have something offer, the schools superintendent said. Rosandick served as an assistant coach for the Trojans first tennis practice Friday while new head coach Mark Weekes wraps up the Middle School seventhgrade boys basketball season. I think it s a neat opportunity for me, Rosandick said. If things work out well, it ll give me a chance to get to know the kids better. Rosandick says he s been playing tennis since he was a teenager. He played while attending the College of Idaho in Caldwell, tabbing himself a lower-level competitive player. Of course, his main responsibility continues to be overseeing the operation of the school district. 5 Wednesday, March 1, 2006 Page 5B JV girls comeback falls short in 1A first round by Chelicy Payne, JVHS A valiant fourth-quarter comeback try after a 10-hour bus ride came up short last week as the Jordan Valley High School girls basketball team was knocked out in the first round of the 1A Oregon state tournament. The Mustangs trimmed an 18- point deficit to just three during a fourth-quarter rally, but host Mapleton held on for a victory on Friday. The Mustangs ended their season with a 23-3 record. Our girls made a good effort in the game, but our shots weren t falling and we needed them all, Michelle Elsner said. The game was tough and pushed us. We finally woke up in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late. Bailey Kershner hit one of her three 3-point goals to spark the Mustangs in the fourth quarter. Kershner finished with 11 points, while Lauren Cuvelier led the way for the Mustangs with 24 points. Angela Larsen added eight points and Cassia Trautman scored five. Jordan Valley coach Jeremy Chamberlain called a timeout with 1.7 seconds left in the game and the Mustangs trailing by four points. In the timeout, Chamberlain told his team that he thought they were winners even if they were about to lose the game, he wanted them to walk off the floor with their heads held high. So in the end the mustangs did just that. They held the tears until the locker room. I was happy with our effort, Chamberlain said. We just didn t stop them defensively. However, I never thought we quit or were out of the ball game. Obstacle course High School boys basketball player Matt Holloway has to change his shot slightly as he looks for an open space beyond Weiser defender Bobby Hopkins in last week s 3A District III Tournament elimination game at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. Holloway scored four points in the season-ending loss to the Wolverines. Photo by Gregg Garrett boys fall victim to turnovers The High School boys basketball season ended Feb. 21 with a blowout loss to Weiser in the 3A District III Tournament at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. The Trojans leading scorer for the season, senior Garrett Sweet, endured foul trouble and was limited to four points as the Wolverines hung a loss on. We had a couple kids that were sick, first-year coach Brad Hill said. Garrett got in foul trouble real quick. He ended up playing just four or five minutes in the whole game. The Trojans ended their season with a 7-16 overall record. I think we have some kids that understand what it takes to win at this level, Hill said. You ve got to play as a team. You can t stand around and watch and be successful year after year. Ryan Rupp scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter as tried in vain to rebound from the first three quarters that saw the Wolverines dominate with an opportunistic transition offense. Turnovers led to lay-ins, Hill said. It was just a mirror image of every game we ve gotten blown out. Brandon Richins nailed a pair of 3-point goals and scored all 10 of his points in the first 16 minutes as the Wolverines built a lead at the break. But the Wolverines were unstoppable against. Michael Overgaard scored 14 points, while Tyson Eisenbarth added 12 points and Bobby Hopkins 10 for Weiser. Overgaard scored seven points in the third quarter as the Wolverines blew the game open by outscoring Weiser led heading into the final period. Overgaard hurt us inside, Hill said. Hopkins must have had 10 points just on break-away lay-ins alone. Weiser s season ended with a narrow loss to Kellogg in a 3A state tournament play-in game held in Craigmont. They re a very good ballclub and took a tough loss up north, Hill said. I didn t think they were 30 points better than us, though. Colts boys capture tourney by Alek Quintero, JVHS Last weekend, Jordan Valley Middle School s basketball teams competed in the 43 rd annual Huntington Tournament in Huntington, Ore., with the Colts boys claiming a championship. Jordan Valley cruised to the tournament title with a win over Willow Creek on night. I am really glad that we came up on top, but it was tough, Jordan Valley coach Mike Quintero said. The Cove game was really the championship game, but we still didn t take Willow Creek for granted. Our boys played hard. Jordan Valley beat Willow Creek twice in the regular season. The Mustangs reached the championship game by surviving a semifinal against Cove. The Leopards trailed throughout the game until pulling to within two points late against Jordan Valley. Jordan Valley also had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by Powder Valley from North Powder, Ore., in the opening round. Powder Valley also cut the Mustangs lead to two points late. The Jordan Valley girls also were bitten by the comeback bug in their opening game against Powder Valley. The Mustangs held a lead until the fourth quarter when Powder Valley rallied to force overtime. The Badgers made a run through the extra period and won by 10 points. In s early consolationbracket game, the Jordan Valley girls faced Prairie City. The Mustangs endured another overtime loss as the Panthers posted a seven-point victory. All-star selections included boys Dusty Easterday and Brandon Mackenzie and Ashley Hebison from the Mustangs girls team.
